TLT is the broader long-term Treasury-bond exposure; EDV is a more rate-sensitive, zero-coupon Treasury STRIPS exposure. The choice turns on the job you want the fund to do, how much price volatility you can tolerate, and whether the lower stated fee on EDV matters more than its substantially longer reported duration. Neither fund is automatically the better choice, and the published duration and yield figures below come from different dates and are not a synchronized performance forecast.
TLT and EDV in one sentence each
TLT is the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF. iShares says it seeks to track an index containing U.S. Treasury bonds with remaining maturities greater than 20 years.

EDV is the Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF. It tracks the Bloomberg U.S. Treasury STRIPS 20–30 Year Equal Par Bond Index, an index of extended-duration, zero-coupon U.S. Treasury securities.
Both funds therefore concentrate on the far end of the U.S. Treasury curve, but they package that exposure differently. TLT owns bonds selected by remaining maturity. EDV owns Treasury STRIPS in a 20-to-30-year maturity range. That difference in cash-flow structure is the reason EDV can react more sharply to changes in long-term yields.

What each ETF actually holds
TLT: Treasury bonds with more than 20 years remaining
TLT’s stated objective is to follow an index of U.S. Treasury bonds with remaining maturities longer than 20 years. The maturity test is based on the time left until each bond matures, so the portfolio’s holdings and interest-rate exposure change as securities move closer to maturity and as the index is rebalanced.
These are direct U.S. government debt instruments rather than corporate credit. That addresses default-credit exposure, but it does not make the share price stable. The market value of a long-maturity Treasury can fall substantially when prevailing yields rise.
EDV: zero-coupon Treasury STRIPS
EDV follows an index of Treasury STRIPS with 20-to-30-year maturities. Vanguard describes a STRIP as “a single coupon or principal payment on a U.S. Treasury security that has been ‘stripped’ into separately tradable components.” Each component is a stand-alone zero-coupon security: it does not make periodic coupon payments and instead is bought at a discount to its value at maturity.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Because a zero-coupon security’s cash flow is concentrated at maturity, more of its value depends on the discount rate applied over the entire remaining term. That generally produces longer duration than a portfolio of coupon-paying bonds with a similar maturity label. EDV’s design is therefore not simply “more of the same” Treasury exposure as TLT; it is a deliberately extended-duration position.

Why the maturity labels are not interchangeable
“20+ years” for TLT describes a minimum remaining-maturity screen. “20–30 years” for EDV describes the maturity band of the STRIPS benchmark. The terms do not identify identical securities, cash-flow timing or duration. Comparing only the headline maturity ranges would miss the principal difference between the funds: TLT’s bond exposure versus EDV’s zero-coupon, extended-duration exposure.
Duration: the clearest measure of the rate-sensitivity gap
Duration estimates how much a bond or bond portfolio’s price will change for a given change in yields, before accounting for convexity and other effects. A longer duration normally means a larger price move for the same yield move.
| Fund | Reported duration | Measure and date | What the comparison indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| TLT | 15.05 years | Effective duration, September 17, 2026 (iShares) | Long-duration Treasury exposure |
| EDV | 23.9 years | Average duration, July 31, 2026 (Vanguard) | Longer reported duration and greater rate sensitivity |
EDV’s reported duration is higher than TLT’s on these observations, so EDV should be expected to experience the larger percentage price move when comparable long-term yields change by the same amount. The figures are not a same-day, same-label measurement: TLT’s number is an effective duration dated September 17, 2026, while EDV’s is an average duration dated July 31, 2026. They support a directional comparison, not a precision estimate of today’s spread or a promise about future returns.

A simple, hypothetical duration illustration
As a rough illustration only, a 1-percentage-point increase in yields could correspond to an approximate 15% decline for a 15-year-duration portfolio and an approximate 24% decline for a 24-year-duration portfolio, before convexity and other factors. Applying that arithmetic to TLT and EDV would be an illustration based on their reported duration figures, not a forecast. Actual results depend on the size and shape of the yield-curve move, portfolio turnover, convexity, distributions and market pricing.

The same relationship works in reverse: a fall in long-term yields can produce a larger positive price response in the higher-duration fund. That leverage to rates is the central reason an investor might choose EDV, and the central reason it can be uncomfortable to hold.
Fees and published yields
| Measure | TLT | EDV | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stated expense ratio | 0.15%, current-prospectus information shown on the iShares product page accessed October 13, 2026 | 0.05%, as of December 19, 2025 | EDV’s stated fee is lower; verify both prospectuses before investing because fund expenses can change |
| 30-day SEC yield | 5.23%, as of September 17, 2026 | 5.56%, as of September 10, 2026 | These are date-specific standardized yield figures, not a same-day comparison or a guaranteed future return |
The 0.10-percentage-point difference in the stated expense ratios favors EDV on cost, all else equal. On a $10,000 position, that difference is approximately $10 per year before compounding, assuming the stated percentages and a constant balance; market values, distributions and actual expenses will vary.
The SEC yield is a standardized backward-looking calculation based on a recent 30-day period. TLT’s published figure is from September 17, 2026, and EDV’s is from September 10, 2026. A seven-day difference can matter in a changing-rate market, so the numbers should not be presented as a synchronized yield spread. Neither figure is a coupon promise, an expected total return or a guarantee that the fund will distribute that amount.

You want long-term Treasury exposure without maximizing duration
TLT’s reported 15.05-year effective duration is materially shorter than EDV’s reported 23.9-year average duration. An investor who wants a long-maturity Treasury allocation but prefers less sensitivity than an extended-duration STRIPS portfolio may find TLT’s exposure easier to size around other holdings.

You need a broader long-maturity bond structure
TLT’s mandate is defined by remaining maturity greater than 20 years rather than by a 20-to-30-year STRIPS band. That gives it a different maturity and cash-flow profile from EDV. The right choice depends on whether that broader long-maturity bond exposure matches the role assigned to the position.
You are prepared for substantial price movement but do not need the maximum rate lever
TLT can still be highly volatile. A 15-year duration is not a short-term-bond characteristic, and Treasury credit quality does not prevent mark-to-market losses. TLT is the less rate-sensitive option only relative to EDV on the dated figures above; it is not a low-volatility cash substitute.
Which portfolio job points toward EDV?
You want the strongest direct response to long-term rate changes
EDV’s zero-coupon STRIPS and 23.9-year reported average duration make it the more rate-sensitive exposure on the supplied observations. If long-term yields fall, EDV can have a larger price response than TLT; if yields rise, the downside response can also be larger.
You accept price volatility in exchange for extended duration
EDV is most coherent when its higher duration is intentional rather than accidental. Investors should be able to tolerate large interim losses without assuming that Treasury backing will keep the share price near its purchase price. A zero-coupon structure also means the fund does not provide the same pattern of periodic coupon cash flows as a portfolio of coupon-paying bonds.

You place a high value on the lower stated expense ratio
EDV’s stated 0.05% expense ratio is below TLT’s stated 0.15%. That cost advantage is real in the published figures, but it does not erase the market risk created by EDV’s longer duration. A lower fee cannot compensate for choosing a volatility level that does not fit the portfolio’s purpose or holding period.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decision framework: choose by exposure, not by the ticker alone
- Define the job. Write down whether the position is intended to provide long-term Treasury exposure, a high-duration rate position, diversification from other assets, or another clearly defined function. The fund facts establish the securities and duration; they do not establish that either ETF will hedge equities, outperform or meet a personal objective.
- Set a tolerable drawdown before comparing yields. Use the duration figures to recognize the scale of possible price moves. If a large temporary loss would force a sale, the higher-duration structure may be unsuitable regardless of its fee or published yield.
- Choose the cash-flow structure. TLT tracks Treasury bonds selected for more than 20 years of remaining maturity. EDV tracks zero-coupon STRIPS in a 20-to-30-year maturity range. Decide whether periodic coupon-bearing bond exposure or concentrated maturity cash flows better match the role.
- Compare duration on matched dates when you act. The published TLT and EDV figures here are dated differently and use different labels. Before placing an order, review the latest official fund pages and prospectuses rather than treating the September and July observations as current forever.
- Check the current fee and yield disclosures. The stated expense ratios and 30-day SEC yields can change. Treat the yield as a standardized recent-period statistic, not a guaranteed distribution or return.
- Stress-test the holding period. Consider what you would do if long-term yields rose sharply, if the share price fell for several quarters, or if you needed to sell before rates moved in your favor. A fund with longer duration requires more patience when the rate path is unfavorable.
How rate moves affect TLT and EDV
When long-term yields rise
Existing bond prices generally fall when newly issued bonds offer higher yields. The effect is magnified for longer-duration securities. On the reported measures, EDV should fall more than TLT for a comparable upward move in long-term yields, although the realized difference can vary with curve shape, convexity and market liquidity.
When long-term yields fall
Existing bond prices generally rise when yields decline. EDV’s longer duration gives it the larger theoretical upside response to the same downward yield move. That upside is not free: the same sensitivity applies in the opposite direction during rising-rate periods.
When only part of the Treasury curve moves
Neither fund is a pure one-number bet on every Treasury maturity. A steepening or flattening curve can affect holdings differently, and the benchmark rules, rebalancing and market pricing matter. Duration is a useful first approximation, not a complete description of day-to-day returns.
Risks that apply to both funds
- Interest-rate risk: Long-maturity Treasury prices can fall meaningfully when yields rise.
- Duration risk: EDV’s reported duration is longer than TLT’s, increasing its sensitivity on the dated figures.
- Market-value risk: Treasury credit quality does not prevent either ETF’s market price from declining.
- Timing risk: Selling before a favorable rate move can lock in a loss even when the underlying securities are expected to mature at par.
- Data-timing risk: Published duration, expense and SEC-yield figures are snapshots. They have dates, use different measurement labels and can change.
- Reinvestment and cash-flow differences: EDV’s zero-coupon structure concentrates value at maturity, while TLT’s Treasury-bond exposure has a different coupon and maturity pattern.
Neither fund should be described as cash, a guaranteed-return vehicle or a guaranteed hedge for stocks. The fact that the U.S. Treasury is the underlying borrower addresses credit exposure; it does not remove duration, liquidity or price risk in an exchange-traded fund.
What to verify before buying
- Read the latest objective and benchmark description. Confirm whether the current mandate still uses the stated maturity or STRIPS index.
- Record the latest duration date and definition. Note whether the page reports effective duration, average duration or another measure, and do not combine unlike figures without labeling them.
- Confirm the expense ratio in the current prospectus. The figures cited here are 0.15% for TLT and 0.05% for EDV on their respective disclosure dates.
- Check the current 30-day SEC yield date. Use it to compare recent income characteristics, not to forecast total return.
- Review the fund’s holdings and distributions. Verify that the actual cash-flow profile still matches the role you assigned to the position.
- Decide on a rebalancing rule. A written rule can prevent a rate-driven price move from turning into an unplanned buy or sell decision.
TLT vs. EDV: practical trade-off summary
| Question | TLT | EDV |
|---|---|---|
| What does the benchmark target? | U.S. Treasury bonds with more than 20 years remaining to maturity | Zero-coupon U.S. Treasury STRIPS with 20–30-year maturities |
| Which has the longer reported duration? | 15.05-year effective duration (September 17, 2026) | 23.9-year average duration (July 31, 2026) |
| Which is more rate-sensitive on those figures? | Less rate-sensitive than EDV | More rate-sensitive than TLT |
| Which has the lower stated expense ratio? | 0.15% (current-prospectus information shown October 13, 2026) | 0.05% (as of December 19, 2025) |
| Published 30-day SEC yield | 5.23% (as of September 17, 2026) | 5.56% (as of September 10, 2026) |
The table is a decision aid, not a ranking. The duration observations are from different dates and use different labels; the yield observations are also from different dates. Current disclosures should take precedence over these dated figures.
Bottom line for the comparison
Choose between TLT and EDV by deciding how much long-term rate sensitivity you want. TLT offers long-maturity Treasury-bond exposure with a lower reported duration than EDV. EDV offers zero-coupon 20-to-30-year STRIPS exposure, a lower stated expense ratio and a substantially longer reported duration. That makes EDV the more powerful—and more volatile—rate position on the published measures. The suitable fund is the one whose benchmark, duration, cash-flow structure, cost and risk level match a defined portfolio role after you review the latest official disclosures.
