Most TJ Hughes products bought online can be returned within 28 days of delivery, provided they meet the policy conditions. Unwanted goods normally have to be sent back at your expense, in their original packaging, and any refund goes to the original payment method. A separate legal cancellation right gives online shoppers 14 days from delivery to tell TJ Hughes they are cancelling; standard delivery must then be refunded, but an express upgrade above the standard rate does not have to be.
Faulty, damaged or misdescribed goods follow different rules. Contact TJ Hughes customer service before sending them, keep proof of purchase, and explain the problem. The retailer says qualifying faults reported within 12 months can include reimbursement of the original delivery charge. This guide uses the TJ Hughes policy page marked “Last Updated – 01/10/24”; policy wording, exclusions and contact routes can change.

Within 14 days: statutory online cancellation
If you bought online, the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 generally give you 14 days after delivery to notify the trader that you are cancelling. You do not need to prove a fault: a change of mind is enough, provided the goods are not in an excluded category and you comply with the condition rules.

TJ Hughes says the refund includes the cost of its standard delivery service. If you paid extra for express, timed or another enhanced service, the retailer only has to refund the amount equivalent to the cheapest standard option it offered. The additional premium is not included.

Days 15 to 28: TJ Hughes’s broader return policy
TJ Hughes states that a product may be returned for any reason within 28 days of delivery, subject to exclusions. This is the retailer’s policy window rather than the 14-day statutory cancellation notification period. Keep the item in its original packaging and in suitable condition so the return can be assessed. Refunds under this route are made to the original tender type.
The 28-day policy does not override legal remedies. If the product is faulty, not as described or unsuitable for its intended purpose, describe that problem rather than presenting it only as an unwanted return.
More than six months after delivery
TJ Hughes says requests for goods over six months old are handled with credit or exchange subject to availability. Its policy says online credit expires after 12 months and can be lower than the original price. That wording does not remove statutory rights. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 can still provide repair, replacement, price reduction or rejection remedies where the goods do not conform to the contract.

Unwanted or change-of-mind purchases
For a qualifying unwanted item returned within the stated window, the published policy points to a refund to the original payment method. That is different from the over-six-month process, where TJ Hughes says credit or exchange may be offered subject to availability. State clearly that the item is an unwanted return or a statutory cancellation when you contact customer service.
Faulty, damaged or not as described
A fault can trigger a different remedy from a simple change-of-mind return. TJ Hughes may arrange an inspection before deciding what happens. Depending on the defect, timing and legal conditions, the outcome can be repair, replacement, refund, price reduction or another remedy. Supply proof of purchase and explain when the problem appeared.

For qualifying faults, TJ Hughes says the original delivery charge can be reimbursed when the issue is reported within 12 months of delivery. Do not pay for a discretionary return label or accept store credit as the only option without first explaining that the goods are faulty and asking how the statutory remedy will be handled.
Credit after six months
If TJ Hughes applies its stated over-six-month process, online credit is not the same as a cash refund. The policy says that credit expires after 12 months and may be less than the original price. Ask customer service to identify the legal basis for the proposed remedy if you believe the item was faulty or otherwise failed to conform to the contract.

Items TJ Hughes may exclude or restrict
Check the category before dispatching anything. TJ Hughes lists personalised and made-to-measure products and furniture as excluded from refunds. Those exclusions do not cancel legal rights for goods that are faulty, unsafe, misdescribed or otherwise non-conforming.
Health and hygiene products have stricter condition requirements. The policy identifies underwear, swimwear, cosmetics, grooming goods, bedding and jewellery among the categories that must be unused and returned in their original packaging. Opening, wearing or using such an item can affect whether a change-of-mind return is accepted, even though a genuine defect remains a separate legal issue.
How to return an online order
- Contact customer service first. Use the TJ Hughes website contact route or email [email protected]. Include your order number, name, address and the reason for the return. The FAQ says online purchases should be started through customer service rather than taken to a shop.
- Classify the reason accurately. Say whether this is a statutory cancellation, an unwanted item within 28 days, a fault, transit damage or an item that is not as described. The classification affects delivery refunds, inspection and the remedy available.
- Check the deadline. For cancellation, notify TJ Hughes within 14 days after delivery. For the retailer’s wider unwanted-goods policy, make sure the return is within 28 days of delivery. If the item is older than six months, mention the age immediately because the policy describes a separate credit-or-exchange route.
- Prepare the goods. Keep the original packaging, accessories, manuals and labels where possible. TJ Hughes says poor packaging can result in a return being refused or a refund being reduced. Use a strong outer box and cushioning for fragile items.
- Keep evidence. Retain the order confirmation, photographs of damage, your customer-service correspondence and the parcel receipt. For a faulty return, TJ Hughes specifically advises retaining proof of purchase and obtaining proof of delivery.
- Send the parcel using the instructed route. For an unwanted item, expect to pay the return postage unless TJ Hughes has agreed another arrangement. For a fault or damage claim, ask how the retailer wants the item inspected and how reasonable return costs will be handled.
- Track processing. Keep the tracking number until the refund or agreed remedy is complete. Do not treat the carrier’s delivery scan as the same thing as a completed refund decision.
Who pays return postage?
For an unwanted item, TJ Hughes says the customer pays return delivery. Package it carefully: the policy warns that inadequate packaging can lead to refusal or a reduced refund.

Fault-related returns are different. Where goods are faulty, damaged or unfit for purpose, the retailer says qualifying cases within 12 months can include reimbursement of the original delivery charge. UK consumer law also places reasonable return costs on the trader for rejected non-conforming goods in the circumstances covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Tell customer service that the return is for a fault and ask for the approved process before paying a substantial shipping charge.
How long does a TJ Hughes refund take?
TJ Hughes says it aims to process UK returns within 10 days of receipt. Its refund information also says refunds are processed within 14 calendar days of receiving the goods and may then take 7–10 working days to clear through the bank or card provider.
Those are separate stages: the parcel must arrive, TJ Hughes must assess and process it, and the payment provider must post the credit. Keep the delivery confirmation and count the stated period from the date the retailer received the goods, not from the day you handed the parcel to a carrier.
If the stated processing and bank-clearance periods have passed, contact customer service with the order number, return tracking reference, delivery date and the payment method used. Ask whether the return was accepted, whether a refund was issued and the date and amount of the transaction.
Can an online TJ Hughes order be returned to a store?
Not currently, according to the TJ Hughes FAQ. Online purchases should be started through customer service rather than taken to a TJ Hughes shop. Provide your order number, name, address and reason for return, then follow the instructions supplied for the online order.

This rule concerns the return channel, not the existence of legal rights. If an online item is faulty or not as described, identify that defect when contacting customer service so the request is handled under the appropriate remedy rather than as an ordinary unwanted return.

The retailer’s policy says, “Your statutory rights are not affected.” In practical terms, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires goods to be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for their ordinary or stated purpose. GOV.UK explains that a trader must offer a full refund when an item is faulty, not as described or does not do what it is supposed to do.
For goods returned within six months, the law generally assumes the problem was present at delivery unless the trader can show otherwise, although there are exceptions and the facts of the case matter. The usual legal sequence can involve repair or replacement first, followed by a price reduction or refund when the statutory conditions for those remedies are met. Reasonable return costs for rejected non-conforming goods are normally the trader’s responsibility in the situations covered by the Act.
The 14-day online cancellation right is separate from fault rights. A change-of-mind cancellation has condition, exclusion and delivery-cost rules; a defect claim is judged against the legal quality, description and fitness standards. Use precise wording in your first message so the retailer does not treat a defect claim as a discretionary change-of-mind return.
Common problems and what to do
The parcel arrived damaged
Photograph the outer packaging and the product before discarding anything. Tell TJ Hughes that the damage occurred in transit, include the order details and ask whether it wants an inspection. Do not describe a clearly damaged delivery only as an unwanted return, because the return-cost and remedy rules differ.

The product stopped working after use
Explain the symptoms, when they began and what normal use was involved. Include proof of purchase and ask whether TJ Hughes requires an inspection. If the issue is within 12 months of delivery, mention that the policy addresses delivery-charge reimbursement for qualifying faults.
The refund is lower than expected
Ask for the calculation in writing. Possible explanations include a non-refundable premium above standard delivery, an excluded or hygiene-restricted product, damage caused by inadequate return packaging, or the policy’s stated over-six-month credit process. If the goods were faulty or misdescribed, restate that fact and refer to your statutory remedy.
The return was refused
Request the reason, the condition assessment and the policy basis. Send photographs, the delivery and return tracking records, and your original customer-service message. If the dispute concerns a fault, distinguish it from a change-of-mind return and set out the remedy you are seeking under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

- Confirm whether the purchase was online and record the delivery date.
- Choose the correct reason: cancellation, unwanted item, fault, damage or not as described.
- Check the 14-day cancellation deadline or the 28-day general policy window.
- Check category exclusions and unused/original-packaging requirements.
- Email [email protected] or use the website contact route before posting.
- Include the order number, name, address and reason.
- Use the original packaging where possible and package securely.
- Keep proof of purchase, photos, postage receipt and tracking.
- Allow the stated processing and bank-clearance periods before escalating.
Bottom line
For most online purchases, act within 14 days if you are cancelling under the statutory cooling-off rules, or within 28 days for TJ Hughes’s wider unwanted-goods policy. Expect to pay return postage for a change-of-mind item. Faulty, damaged and misdescribed goods should be reported as defects, with proof of purchase and delivery evidence, because the available remedy and responsibility for reasonable return costs can be different. Online orders cannot currently be taken to a TJ Hughes store, and refunds may need up to 14 calendar days to process after receipt plus 7–10 working days to appear.
