Tikehau: From a Second Mortgage to a €53.5 Billion Alternative-Asset Platform

Tikehau Capital began in 2004 with about €4 million in assets under management (AUM). By 30 June 2026, its official total AUM was €53.5 billion, alongside €3.2 billion of group shareholder equity and 709 employees. Co-founder Mathieu Chabran described that scale conversationally as roughly $60 billion in an October 2026 interview. The path between those figures included a near-fatal custody crisis after Lehman Brothers collapsed and a founder who says he put a second mortgage on his home at risk.

What Tikehau Capital is—and what the “$60 billion” figure means

Tikehau Capital is a founder-led alternative-asset manager. It raises and manages capital for investors across private-market and related strategies rather than operating like a conventional retail bank or a single-purpose investment fund.

The headline figure needs two qualifications. Chabran’s “roughly $60 billion” was a conversational dollar estimate in an S&P Global Leaders interview published 15 October 2026. Tikehau’s dated official disclosure reports €53.5 billion of total AUM as of 30 June 2026. AUM is the capital the firm manages for clients and other investors; it is not the same as the company’s own net worth. The same disclosure lists €3.2 billion of group shareholder equity.

How two finance professionals started Tikehau

The 2004 launch

Antoine Flamarion and Mathieu Chabran met while working in finance in London. Chabran says they decided to build an alternative asset manager after watching U.S. firms expand in the sector. They started in 2004 with approximately €4 million of AUM. Tikehau’s corporate history confirms that the company was founded that year by two financial entrepreneurs.

Starting with €4 million meant the founders had to win investors and build operating capacity before they had the scale enjoyed by established global managers. Their later growth was therefore a progression from a small, founder-controlled business into a multi-strategy platform, not a single fund that suddenly multiplied in size.

The Lehman shock

Tikehau entered September and October 2008 with about €400 million of AUM, according to Chabran. Lehman Brothers was one of the firm’s custodians. After Lehman collapsed on 15 September 2008, Chabran says the founders were told that assets held there were gone because of rehypothecation. Rehypothecation is the reuse of client collateral by a financial intermediary, so the episode exposed Tikehau to both custody uncertainty and an immediate threat to its young business.

Chabran recounts that the founders pursued large Wall Street institutions with lawyers to recover what they believed belonged to the firm and its investors. He also says the founders had their own money at risk, including “a second mortgage on a house”—more precisely, a mortgage on a flat—to remain in the business. His description is an interview account, not an independently audited reconstruction of every asset movement during the crisis. He characterizes the fight as existential: they had to fight for what was theirs.

How the platform expanded beyond its original base

Tikehau now organizes its activities into four core lines:

  • Credit: lending and credit-investing strategies, including private and direct lending.
  • Real Assets: investments linked to tangible assets and infrastructure-related opportunities.
  • Private Equity: investments in privately held companies.
  • Capital Markets Strategies: strategies using public and market-based instruments alongside the private-market businesses.

This mix gives the firm several channels for raising capital and deploying it across economic cycles. A concrete sign of current fundraising capacity was the €5.2 billion final close for its sixth European Direct Lending strategy, announced 23 July 2026. The figure describes that strategy’s final close, not Tikehau’s total AUM.

Tikehau’s stated alignment and ownership model

The company presents founder and employee alignment as a central part of its investment culture. Tikehau reports that:

  • Approximately 75% of its balance sheet was invested alongside investor-clients as of 31 March 2026.
  • Management and employees controlled 56% of the company.
  • 20% of employees’ variable compensation was linked to climate and human-resources targets.

These are company-reported figures. Balance-sheet co-investment can put the firm’s capital alongside clients, while employee ownership can give staff a direct economic interest in long-term results. Neither measure removes investment risk: private assets can lose value, are often illiquid and may take years to realize.

How large is Tikehau Capital now?

Measure Figure Date and qualification
Total AUM €53.5 billion As of 30 June 2026; official company figure
Group shareholder equity €3.2 billion As of 30 June 2026
Employees 709 As of 30 June 2026
Countries of operation 17 As of 31 December 2025
Founder’s rounded dollar description Approximately $60 billion Chabran’s conversational estimate in an interview published 15 October 2026

The euro AUM number and the dollar shorthand are not competing measurements. Exchange rates change, and the company’s dated euro disclosure is the more precise reference for a specific reporting date.

Partnerships that show where Tikehau is concentrating capital

Tikehau identifies partnerships and investment themes in several sectors:

  • Decarbonisation: an ecosystem partnership with TotalEnergies.
  • Regenerative agriculture: work with Unilever and AXA.
  • European real-estate credit: a partnership with Altarea.
  • Aerospace and defence: relationships involving Airbus, Safran, Dassault Aviation and Thales.

The company’s homepage cites an International Energy Agency estimate from 2022 of an approximately $4 trillion annual financing gap for decarbonisation. That is a sector-wide estimate, not Tikehau’s own funding commitment or a forecast of its returns.

International distribution is another part of the expansion strategy. In a 27 June 2024 announcement, Nikko Asset Management said its Asia partnership with Tikehau combined a distribution agreement, a joint venture and an equity stake. The arrangement was designed to broaden access to Tikehau strategies in Asia while giving the partners a closer corporate relationship.

What the growth story tells investors and clients

AUM growth is not the same as investor profit

Moving from €4 million to €53.5 billion shows fundraising, product expansion and geographic growth. It does not, by itself, prove that every strategy outperformed or that clients earned a particular return. AUM can rise because investors add capital, markets appreciate, acquisitions occur or currency values move; it can also fall for the opposite reasons.

Private-market liquidity is different

Credit, real assets and private equity generally involve longer holding periods and less frequent pricing than listed shares or bonds. Investors evaluating a Tikehau fund would need to examine the specific vehicle’s redemption terms, leverage, valuation policy, fees, concentration and loss history rather than relying on the group-wide AUM figure.

Founder control remains part of the identity

The founders’ continuing influence and the reported 56% management-and-employee control help explain why Tikehau emphasizes alignment and selectivity. They also make governance, succession planning and transparency important questions for investors as the platform grows across 17 countries.

Tikehau’s trajectory at a glance

Year or date Milestone
2004 Flamarion and Chabran found Tikehau with approximately €4 million of AUM.
September–October 2008 The firm has about €400 million of AUM as the Lehman collapse triggers a custody dispute; Chabran says the founders use personal capital and legal action to keep the business alive.
27 June 2024 Nikko Asset Management announces an Asia partnership combining distribution, a joint venture and an equity stake.
31 December 2025 Tikehau reports operations in 17 countries.
31 March 2026 The company reports approximately 75% balance-sheet investment alongside clients.
30 June 2026 Official figures show €53.5 billion AUM, €3.2 billion shareholder equity and 709 employees.
23 July 2026 The sixth European Direct Lending strategy reaches a €5.2 billion final close.
15 October 2026 Chabran describes the platform conversationally as roughly $60 billion in an S&P Global interview.

The bottom line

Tikehau’s rise combines a small 2004 launch, a founder-described near-death experience during the Lehman collapse and deliberate expansion across four alternative-investment businesses. The best current measure of its size is €53.5 billion of total AUM at 30 June 2026, while the “$60 billion” phrase is a rounded October 2026 description. Its stated model rests on founder and employee ownership, co-investment with clients and partnerships aimed at credit, real assets, private companies and long-term transition themes.
