Samsung lost relative breadth—most visibly in China and lower-priced Android segments—but its global shipment share barely moved, from about 20% in 2016 to 19% in 2023. Huawei’s international smartphone business suffered a structural break after U.S. export controls and the loss of Google Mobile Services on new models. The result was not a four-brand replacement cycle, but a more fragmented market in which Xiaomi, Honor, Apple, Transsion and Motorola also captured demand.
First, define “Android market share”
“Android market share” can describe several different measures. They should not be mixed:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Shipment share: phones shipped into the channel, as in Counterpoint, IDC or Canalys vendor tables.
- Sell-through or sales share: phones actually sold to consumers; inventory timing can make it differ from shipments.
- Installed-base share: devices still in use, which favors brands with long replacement cycles.
- Operating-system share: Android, iOS or HarmonyOS—not the same as vendor share.
- Regional share: a global average can hide Samsung’s weakness in China or Huawei’s strength there.
The historical figures below use Counterpoint’s global shipment-share series unless otherwise labeled. Small differences between trackers can reflect shipment versus sell-through measurement, subsidiary treatment, rounding, inventory timing and reporting dates. IDC treats vendor shares within 0.1 percentage points as a statistical tie in its methodology.
Brand accounting also changes over time. Counterpoint excludes Honor from the Huawei family after Honor separated in the fourth quarter of 2020, and its China data includes OnePlus within Oppo from the third quarter of 2021. Those definitions matter when comparing years.

Counterpoint’s eight-year global shipment series and IDC’s tracker methodology are useful starting points, but they are not interchangeable datasets.
What changed in the global ranking?
| Year | Samsung | Oppo | vivo | Huawei | What the series establishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 | About 20% | About 6% | About 5% | Not stated in the cited summary | Samsung led; Oppo and vivo were already material vendors. |
| 2017 | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Chinese brands expanded their global relevance. |
| 2018 | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Huawei’s international rise was accelerating. |

| 2023 | About 19% | About 9% | About 8% | Limited global presence | Oppo and vivo gained share; Samsung remained near the top globally. |
The table shows why “Samsung fell” is too blunt. On this consistent series, Samsung’s global share declined by roughly one percentage point over seven years—not a collapse. Oppo gained about three points and vivo about three points, but neither overtook Samsung globally.
Why Oppo and vivo rose
China-first physical distribution
Oppo and vivo built dense Chinese networks of stores, distributors and sales representatives. Demonstrations, salesperson recommendations, installment offers, carrier relationships and local after-sales service mattered when smartphones were still bought primarily in physical retail. That channel infrastructure later gave both brands a base from which to expand abroad.

Relentless mid-range execution
Frequent launches let the brands cover many price bands while emphasizing features consumers could see immediately: cameras and portrait modes, large displays, fast charging, attractive industrial design and dual-SIM support. Local pricing and promotions were tailored to specific markets rather than copied wholesale from China.

Regional adaptation
India and Southeast Asia required different distributor economics, price points, marketing partners and service arrangements. Oppo and vivo invested in local celebrity and sports campaigns, country-specific retail and repair coverage, and product configurations suited to regional battery and camera preferences.
Distinct, if related, portfolios
The wider BBK corporate history placed related brands in different positions: Oppo leaned toward design, cameras, charging and premiumization; vivo emphasized imaging and its X-series flagships; iQOO targeted performance-focused buyers; and OnePlus occupied a separate enthusiast position. Corporate or supply-chain relationships do not justify adding every related brand into one market-share number unless the tracker explicitly does so.
The brands also moved upward. Foldables, charging technology, camera research and premium flagships were attempts to improve margins and brand credibility, not just to sell inexpensive phones.

A genuine pre-2019 competitive achievement
Huawei combined telecommunications engineering, heavy research spending, improving camera hardware, competitive pricing and broad carrier and retail distribution. It expanded from China into Europe and other international markets and became a credible premium alternative to Samsung and Apple. Huawei reported investing CNY131.7 billion, or 15.3% of 2019 revenue, in research and development—an important company-reported indicator of commitment, not independent proof of market success (Huawei’s 2019 report).

May 16, 2019: the Entity List
The U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security added Huawei and affiliates to the Entity List on May 16, 2019. The designation imposed licensing requirements on covered exports, reexports and transfers under U.S. export rules (BIS explanation; original rule).
Not “banned from Android”
Android’s open-source code, Google Mobile Services (GMS), the Play Store, proprietary Google apps and Google certification are different things. Google said U.S. law prevented collaboration with Huawei on new device models and prevented preloading or downloading Google applications such as Gmail, Maps, YouTube and the Play Store on affected new devices (Google’s explanation). Existing devices released before the restrictions were treated differently.
Why the international business collapsed
Without official GMS, Huawei phones became materially less convenient in markets where Google apps and Play certification were expected. Later U.S. measures also constrained access to advanced semiconductor manufacturing and other technology. The result was a feedback loop: fewer buyers reduced developer and retailer incentives, which reduced visibility and scale further. This was not an ordinary product-cycle loss.

Why Huawei recovered in China, but not globally
Huawei’s later rebound is concentrated in China. Counterpoint has reported Huawei leading or outperforming rivals there for multiple quarters despite limited international consumer-phone reach (Counterpoint OS and China analysis). Contributors include premium brand equity, national-brand sentiment among some consumers, renewed flagship launches, Huawei Mobile Services and HarmonyOS, improved supply resilience, and strong domestic retail.

Huawei’s 2024 annual report says it held more than 150,000 active granted patents and continued spending more than 10% of sales on R&D. These are company-reported figures; they do not measure smartphone share or prove product superiority (Huawei 2024 annual report).
HarmonyOS also changes the measurement question. A Huawei device using Huawei’s ecosystem should not automatically be counted as an ordinary Google-certified Android phone when discussing operating-system control.
Samsung lost breadth, not global scale
Samsung’s more meaningful setbacks were regional and segment-specific:
- Its position in China became marginal compared with vivo, Oppo, Huawei, Apple, Xiaomi and Honor.
- Low- and mid-range Galaxy phones faced intense pressure from Chinese brands and Transsion.
- Its global mix became more dependent on premium Galaxy products and selected regional strongholds.
Samsung nevertheless retained global distribution, carrier relationships, brand recognition, component and manufacturing advantages, a broad Galaxy range, premium positioning, foldables, and software-service integration. It also kept strong positions in North America, South Korea, Europe and parts of the Middle East and Latin America. Those advantages help explain why Samsung survived the Huawei shock better than Huawei itself—an analytical inference from its geographic and ecosystem position, not a single measured causal statistic.

China reveals the real competitive reshuffle
China is where the headline looks most dramatic. Counterpoint’s 2022 sales data put vivo at 19.2%, Apple at 18.0% and Oppo at 17.5% (Counterpoint’s China 2022 report). Quarterly data subsequently showed vivo retaining leadership in several periods, Huawei recovering strongly and Samsung far weaker than its global position. Oppo’s figures in that China series include OnePlus from Q3 2021, so they are not directly comparable with every other tracker (methodology and quarterly data).
China also demonstrates why global averages mislead. Apple’s premium strength, Huawei’s domestic recovery, Xiaomi’s scale, Honor’s independent operation and the Oppo-vivo channel contest all coexist. A vendor can lose global share yet win a country, and vice versa.
Did Oppo and vivo replace Huawei?
Only partly, and usually through share redistribution rather than one-for-one substitution. They were well placed to capture buyers when Huawei’s distribution weakened and Google services remained essential. But displaced demand also went to Xiaomi, Honor, Apple, Samsung, Transsion and Motorola. The answer varies by country, price tier and operating-system requirements.

Nor did Huawei’s decline reduce Android handset volume one-for-one. Most replacement phones from Oppo, vivo, Xiaomi, Honor and Samsung still used Android or an Android-derived platform. The main loss was Huawei’s vendor share and control of the international ecosystem.
What changed in 2024–2026?
Counterpoint described 2024 as a recovery year after two annual declines, with global smartphone sell-through up approximately 4%. Its analysis said Samsung and Apple were broadly flat, Oppo lost volume but remained fourth, vivo benefited in selected markets, and Huawei recovered in China (Counterpoint 2024 recovery analysis).
Latest tracker material in the cited results keeps Samsung in the global top tier while vivo narrows the gap with Oppo, helped by China and India (IDC global tracker). IDC’s China Q2 2026 discussion places Huawei and Apple in the top tier, followed by Oppo and vivo, while Samsung has only a very small Chinese presence (IDC China Q2 2026). These current figures should be read as tracker-period results, not silently converted into final annual totals.
Strategic scorecard
| Vendor | Geographic reach | Core strength | Main vulnerability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung | Broadest global reach among the four | Scale, carriers, Google-certified ecosystem, premium brand and components | China and value-tier pressure |
| Huawei | Strong China recovery; limited international reach | R&D, premium brand, domestic ecosystem and engineering | Google-service absence and geopolitical supply restrictions |
| Oppo | China, India, Southeast Asia and selected international markets | Retail execution, cameras, charging, design and premiumization | Uneven country availability and intense Chinese competition |
| vivo | Particularly strong in China and India, with wider Asian reach | Offline channels, imaging, design and regional adaptation | Limited presence in markets such as the United States |
What the headline gets right—and wrong
- Right: Oppo and vivo became substantially more important, especially in Asia.
- Wrong: Samsung did not suffer a global collapse; its Counterpoint share moved only from about 20% to 19% between 2016 and 2023.
- Wrong: Huawei was not simply “banned from Android.” The decisive international damage involved GMS, licensing and broader technology-supply restrictions.
- Incomplete: Oppo and vivo did not alone inherit Huawei’s volume; the market also fragmented toward Xiaomi, Honor, Apple, Transsion and Motorola.
- Essential caveat: Huawei’s recovery is primarily a China story, not a return to its former global consumer-phone position.
The Bottom Line
The Android handset market moved from a Samsung–Huawei-centered hierarchy toward a fragmented, China-heavy structure. Oppo and vivo rose through distribution, regional adaptation and increasingly premium products. Samsung retained global scale while losing regional and value-tier breadth. Huawei’s international decline was unusually abrupt because regulation disrupted its Google-based model and supply chain; its later recovery is concentrated in China. Calling this a simple rise-and-fall replacement cycle misses the real story: share was redistributed across many vendors, with China at the center.
