For people aged 50 to 64 in the UK, losing work can create a gap that neither wages nor a state pension fills. The official unemployment rate was 3.1% in 2025, but a much larger share—26.1%—was economically inactive. About 876,000 people in this age group were either actively looking for work or inactive but willing or wanting to work.
That distinction matters. Many are not counted as unemployed because long-term sickness, disability, caring responsibilities or discouragement has taken them out of the job-search system. At the same time, savings are being used for essentials. Age UK research found that 42% of over-50s in Great Britain did not think they could save money during the following 12 months, while its London work describes people returning to work or continuing beyond retirement simply to pay for food and heating.

The DWP figures are snapshots and can move between releases. The London poverty comparison is geographically specific: it is not a UK-wide poverty rate, and the 42% savings finding is from 2023 rather than a current estimate.
Why “unemployed” does not describe everyone who cannot work
Unemployment means active job seeking
Official unemployment statistics generally count people without a job who are available for work and have been actively seeking it. Someone who has stopped applying because of poor health, caring duties or repeated rejection may therefore disappear from the unemployment total while still needing income and wanting a job.

Economic inactivity is a separate status
Economic inactivity means not working and not currently seeking work. In 2025, more than one in four 50–64-year-olds were inactive. Sickness, injury or disability was the main reason reported by 44.7% of inactive people in that age range. Women were more likely than men to report looking after their home or family, showing why caring responsibilities need to be considered alongside health.
Why the distinction changes the help available
A person classified as unemployed may be expected to undertake job-search activity, while someone whose health limits work may need a different benefits assessment, occupational support or a gradual return. A caring responsibility can require flexibility rather than a standard full-time vacancy. The label affects which adviser you see and what evidence you are asked to provide, so describe your actual circumstances in detail when making a claim.

How health, caring and age combine to block a return
Long-term illness can make ordinary recruitment unrealistic
Long-term conditions can reduce the hours, travel, lifting, concentration or reliability a vacancy demands. A gap in employment can then grow, and employers may be reluctant to invest in adjustments or training. The latest DWP release says the long-term-unemployment gap between 50–64-year-olds and 35–49-year-olds narrowed to 0.7 percentage points, but it remains a distinct age-group comparison rather than proof that the problem has disappeared.

Looking after a partner, parent or other relative can make fixed shifts impossible. Women aged 50–64 were more likely than men to cite looking after home or family in the DWP analysis. Part-time, local or predictable work may be the only workable option, yet those vacancies can be less plentiful or lower paid.

Age changes the hiring calculation
People in their 50s can face assumptions that they are overqualified, close to retirement or less willing to learn new systems. Digital recruitment can add another barrier when applications, interviews and identity checks are online. These are practical obstacles even when a candidate has extensive experience; being unable to secure interviews is not evidence that they have stopped wanting work.
How an employment gap turns into a money crisis
Savings are used before pension age
When wages stop, households often draw on cash savings, investments or private pension pots for food, energy and housing. Taking money earlier can leave less available later, especially if withdrawals continue for months. Age UK London reports both people returning to work after retirement and people using savings for essentials while worrying how long the money will last.

Housing costs set the burn rate
Rent, mortgage payments, council tax and repairs continue during unemployment. Renters face a recurring bill that cannot be postponed; homeowners may have equity but still need cash for mortgage, energy and maintenance. London’s 2024 Poverty Profile found 22% of residents over 50 living in poverty, compared with 18% in the rest of England, so the London figure should not be applied to every older household in the UK.

Missing support can accelerate depletion
People may not claim help because they assume they are ineligible, have a partner’s income, own a home or have savings. Others struggle with online forms or do not know which benefit fits an illness, caring role or recent redundancy. A missed claim can mean using savings for costs that a contribution-based or means-tested payment might partly cover.

What to do after redundancy or a failed job search
- Write down your status and timeline. Record the last day worked, redundancy or dismissal details, health limitations, caring hours, available savings and housing costs. This prevents an adviser from treating a health-related exit as a simple job-search problem.
- Run a full benefits check. Check eligibility for working-age benefits and, where relevant, Pension Credit. Rules depend on age, income, National Insurance record, partner status, capital, health and caring responsibilities, so use an up-to-date calculator or a qualified adviser rather than relying on a general article.
- Contact debt advice before missing payments. Ask for a budget that prioritises rent or mortgage, energy, council tax, food and essential insurance. Contact creditors early if a payment is at risk; waiting can remove options.
- Ask about work that matches your capacity. Discuss flexible hours, phased returns, reasonable adjustments, local vacancies and training with an employment adviser. State clearly what you can do reliably instead of promising hours your health or caring role cannot sustain.
- Use local, non-commercial guidance. Age UK services and MoneyHelper can explain benefits, debt and retirement-income choices. Verify current eligibility rules and opening arrangements when you contact them, because thresholds and schemes change.
- Protect the remaining cash. Separate essential bills from discretionary spending, review subscriptions and energy use, and avoid taking an irreversible pension withdrawal until you understand its effect on future income and benefit entitlement.
What the pressure looks like in people’s lives
Abi Wood, chief executive of Age UK London, said: “Older Londoners are facing significant financial pressures that are severely affecting their mental health and wellbeing. No one should be forced to work past retirement, live in deteriorating housing, or suffer financial anxiety in isolation. Urgent action is needed to ensure financial support from the state reaches those that need them the most. It is crucial that rents are made more affordable, and mental health support is available for older people struggling with financial insecurity.”
The evidence does not provide one national number for how many unemployed over-50s are literally running out of money. It does show a connected pattern: a sizeable group is outside the unemployment count, ill health is the leading reported reason for inactivity, savings confidence is weak, and poverty is higher in London than elsewhere in England. For an individual household, the decisive next step is to check support and slow the outflow of cash before savings are exhausted.
