No setting saves a guaranteed percentage for every owner. Signal strength, display brightness, app workload, temperature, battery age and iOS version all change the result, so use Battery settings to find your phone’s actual bottleneck before changing everything at once.

Which settings make the biggest difference?
Use this order when your iPhone Pro Max is running down faster than expected. The first group affects runtime today; the charging and temperature controls protect capacity over months and years.

Start with Battery usage instead of guessing
Open Settings > Battery. Review Daily Usage and App and System Activity Usage to see which apps and system functions consumed energy. The useful clue is not simply the app at the top of the list; it is the activity label attached to the drain.

Background Activity
Background Activity means an app was doing work while you were not actively looking at it. A social, navigation, cloud-storage or media app can refresh content, process uploads or track a task after you leave it. If one app repeatedly shows this pattern, reduce its background permissions, disable notifications you do not need, or close a task that should have ended. Do not disable every background feature blindly: some apps rely on it for timely updates.
No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal
Weak reception can consume substantial power because the phone works harder to maintain a connection. Battery’s labels No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal point to a network problem rather than a brightness problem. In a basement, rural area, train or large building, use Wi-Fi when available. If you know you will be unreachable for an extended period, Airplane Mode can stop repeated network searches; turn it off when you need calls or messages.
Location, streaming and display use
Long navigation sessions, video streaming, camera recording and games combine a bright display with sustained processor, graphics and network activity. The practical fix is to shorten the session, lower brightness, download content over Wi-Fi for offline use where the app supports it, or connect to a charger. Battery usage tells you which intervention is likely to matter instead of relying on a generic checklist.

On iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode. Apple describes it as reducing or disabling selected settings and features to lower power use. It is the fastest broad adjustment when you need the phone to last through travel, a long workday or an emergency.
What Low Power Mode changes
- Reduces display brightness.
- Sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds.
- Turns off Background App Refresh.
- Stops automatic email fetching.
- Pauses some iCloud Photos activity and automatic downloads.
- Reduces visual effects.
- On ProMotion models, limits the display refresh rate to 60 frames per second.
The refresh-rate limit is a noticeable trade-off: scrolling and animations can feel less fluid than normal. That makes Low Power Mode better as a deliberate runtime tool than as a permanent default for people who value the smoothest ProMotion experience.

Low Power Mode turns off automatically after the iPhone charges above 80 percent. If the switch is unavailable or the menu looks different, check the model and iOS version; Apple’s labels and Power Mode layout vary across releases.
Turn on Adaptive Power if your model supports it
Apple’s current Power Modes guidance lists Adaptive Power for iPhone 15 Pro or later. Availability and default behavior can change with the iOS release, so open Settings > Battery > Power Mode on the phone itself rather than assuming that every Pro Max has the option.
Adaptive Power is designed to make conservation decisions automatically. It can lower screen brightness, limit background activity and make performance adjustments. On supported devices it can also turn on Low Power Mode automatically when the battery reaches 20 percent. Those interventions are useful when you want extra endurance without manually switching modes throughout the day.
Because the feature can alter brightness, background work and performance, treat it as an automatic convenience setting, not a promise of a fixed battery-life extension. If an app behaves differently after enabling it, compare the timing with Battery’s activity list and disable Adaptive Power temporarily to isolate the cause.
Reduce the display’s two biggest drains: brightness and screen timeout
Brightness
Apple identifies high brightness as a significant energy user. Use the brightness slider in Control Center or Settings > Display & Brightness and choose the lowest level that remains comfortable in the current light. A bright outdoor setting may be necessary in sunlight; leaving that level active indoors wastes energy without improving readability.

Auto-Lock
Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and choose a shorter timeout if the screen often stays on while you are not interacting with it. Low Power Mode forces a 30-second Auto-Lock, but outside that mode you can select the interval that fits your work. A short timeout is especially effective for reading, messaging or checking a recipe, where the phone may otherwise remain lit on a table.
Brightness and Auto-Lock work together. Lowering brightness helps during active use; shortening Auto-Lock prevents energy use after active use has ended. Change one setting at a time so Battery usage can show whether the adjustment helped your routine.
Control background activity without breaking important alerts
Background App Refresh, email fetch, automatic downloads and visual effects are convenience features that can continue when the screen is off. Low Power Mode handles several of them at once. If you need a more selective approach, review the relevant app settings and keep background access only for apps that genuinely need timely updates.
- Set email to fetch less often, or use manual refresh for accounts you rarely check.
- Disable automatic downloads for content you do not need immediately, especially on cellular data.
- Limit background access for apps that show repeated Background Activity but provide no time-sensitive benefit.
- Keep messaging, authentication and safety-related notifications enabled when missing them would create a bigger problem than the battery cost.
Do not confuse a single high-use day with a persistent pattern. A large photo upload, software update or navigation trip can temporarily dominate the chart and then disappear. Look for the same activity across several days before making a permanent change.
Set charging controls for long-term battery health
Runtime settings determine how long today’s charge lasts. Charging controls are about how much capacity the battery retains after repeated cycles.

Charge Limit on iPhone 15 and later
Open Settings > Battery > Charging. On iPhone 15 and later, you can select a Charge Limit from 80 percent to 100 percent in 5-percent increments. A lower limit can reduce wear when you charge frequently or leave the phone connected for long periods.

The iPhone may occasionally charge to 100 percent even when a lower limit is selected so its battery-percentage estimate remains accurate. That behavior is expected and is not evidence that the limit failed.
Optimised Battery Charging at a 100-percent limit
When Charge Limit is set to 100 percent, Optimised Battery Charging can learn your daily charging routine. It delays charging past 80 percent when the phone expects to remain connected for an extended period, then finishes close to the time you normally unplug it. The feature is most useful when your schedule is regular; it cannot predict every trip or unusual overnight pattern.
Charge Limit and Optimised Battery Charging address the same long-term goal in different ways. A selectable limit is a direct ceiling. Optimised charging keeps the full-capacity option but tries to avoid sitting at that level unnecessarily.

Keep the phone cool while it charges
Apple says iPhone performs best in ambient temperatures from 16° to 22°C (62° to 72°F). Temperatures above 35°C (95°F) can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Heat is therefore a battery-health issue, not merely a comfort issue.

- Do not charge in a hot car, on a dashboard in direct sun or under bedding that traps heat.
- Move a charging phone to a cooler, ventilated surface if it feels unusually hot.
- Avoid combining charging with sustained high-load tasks in a hot environment, such as gaming, navigation or high-resolution video recording.
- If the phone becomes hot during charging, remove insulating cases temporarily and let the device cool before continuing intensive use.
Normal warmth during charging is not automatically a fault. The concern is repeated or prolonged exposure to high ambient temperatures, especially while the battery is being charged.
Know when settings cannot solve the problem
Battery settings cannot restore worn-out battery chemistry. Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If the status shows Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement to restore full performance and capacity. Before changing dozens of settings, check this screen: a degraded battery can explain short runtime even when usage is ordinary.
Battery Health is also useful context for interpreting a sudden change. A demanding app on a newer battery and the same app on an aged battery can produce very different end-of-day results. Record the health status, recent usage and signal conditions when troubleshooting rather than judging the phone from one unusually heavy day.
A practical setup for three common situations
You need the phone to last through today
- Open Settings > Battery and identify the largest current drain.
- Turn on Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode on iPhone 15 or later.
- Lower brightness and shorten Auto-Lock.
- Move to Wi-Fi or a stronger-signal location when possible.
- Stop unnecessary uploads, downloads, navigation and streaming until you can recharge.
You charge at a desk or bedside for long periods
- Open Settings > Battery > Charging.
- Choose a Charge Limit below 100 percent if that still covers your normal day.
- If you need full capacity, leave the limit at 100 percent and use Optimised Battery Charging.
- Keep the charger and phone away from direct sun and other hot environments.
Your drain seems abnormal
- Check Daily Usage and App and System Activity Usage for Background Activity, No Mobile Coverage or Low Signal.
- Compare the pattern over several days, noting travel, streaming, navigation and software-update activity.
- Adjust the specific app, network condition or display setting implicated by the chart.
- Check Battery Health for a Service message.
- If the drain persists after those checks, document the timing and conditions before seeking Apple support; a reproducible pattern is more useful than a general complaint that the battery is “bad.”

Start with the setting that matches the evidence in Battery. Low Power Mode is the broadest short-term lever, display and signal changes often address the largest everyday drains, and charging limits and temperature management are the controls most relevant to long-term capacity.
