The six-person shopping list
Use this basket as the starting point. A 14–16-pound whole frozen turkey follows the U.S. Department of Agriculture allowance of one pound per person and leaves meat for sandwiches, soup or another meal. The other quantities are chosen around common package sizes rather than exact six-serving portions.

Check the pantry before adding flavor basics: broth, onion, poultry seasoning, butter or margarine, milk and flour can turn the listed ingredients into stuffing, gravy and mashed potatoes without another purchase. Buying a duplicate of something already on hand is one of the fastest ways to push a low-cost basket over budget.

Why a 14–16-pound turkey is the right size
USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance says to allow 1 pound of turkey per person. For six diners, that is a minimum of 6 pounds, but whole birds are sold in larger increments and include bones. A 14–16-pound bird gives every guest a generous portion and leaves planned leftovers. It also matches the size used in the most visible 2025 low-price holiday promotions.

Do not pay extra for a larger turkey simply because it is on sale by the pound. Compare the advertised total, the per-pound price and whether the package includes a frozen whole bird. A smaller turkey may reduce leftovers; a much larger one raises the initial bill and requires more oven time and refrigerator space.
What the 2025 under-$40 baskets actually included
ALDI’s holiday basket
ALDI’s official holiday page advertised feeding 10 people with a 16-pound turkey and classic fixings for less than $39. Its pictured basket included a whole turkey, three stuffing mixes, carrots, celery, cranberries, 3 pounds of sweet potatoes, Hawaiian rolls, two packs of peas, pumpkin mix, pie crusts, whole milk and heavy cream. For six people, that package mix can cover the meal and leave substantial leftovers, although the exact products and price at your store may differ.

An ALDI press release dated October 15, 2025 described a 21-product meal for 10 at $40. The listed meal used a 14-pound Jennie-O turkey, rolls, cranberry sauce, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet-potato casserole, green-bean casserole, stuffing and pumpkin pie. The release said prices were effective October 15 through December 24, 2025, and that totals varied by selections and location. Treat the figure as a dated holiday promotion, not a permanent price guarantee.

Walmart’s holiday basket
Walmart’s October 21, 2025 release said its basket served 10 for under $40. The published list included a 13.5-pound Butterball turkey priced at $0.97 per pound, fried onions, mushroom soup, a twin-pack of stuffing, 12 dinner rolls, 5 pounds of russet potatoes, 12 ounces of cranberries, 2 pounds of carrots, canned corn and green beans, three boxes of macaroni and cheese, gravy mix, pie crusts, evaporated milk and canned pumpkin.

Walmart offered store pickup and delivery for the basket. Check the checkout screen before paying: delivery charges and item availability can erase the headline savings, while pickup may preserve them. The basket’s 13.5-pound turkey is slightly below the 14–16-pound target for six but still provides a substantial serving and some leftovers when paired with the many side dishes.
An independent price benchmark
The American Farm Bureau Federation’s 40th annual 2025 survey provides a non-promotional comparison. It found that a classic Thanksgiving basket for 10 averaged $55.18, or $5.52 per person. That is a national survey average, not a guaranteed checkout total, and it includes more items than the leanest six-person list.

Scaling the $55.18 survey basket mathematically to six people would suggest about $33.11, but that calculation ignores package minimums. You still buy a dozen rolls, a full pie crust package and a whole turkey. That is why a practical six-person budget is best stated as roughly $32–$40 before tax when a holiday promotion is available, rather than as an exact per-person multiplication.

For six diners, neither advertised basket needs to be divided into exact sixths. Compare the complete basket total first, then decide whether you value a larger turkey, more side variety, a specific dessert format or the convenience of pickup. If delivery adds a fee, an in-store trip can make the lower shelf price meaningful.

How to keep the checkout total near $40
- Start with the guaranteed basket total. Check the holiday promotion in your local store or online cart before choosing individual items. A published under-$40 meal is a better starting point than adding six servings one product at a time.
- Choose the turkey deal, then size it. Look for a 14–16-pound whole bird and compare the advertised per-pound price. A whole turkey is usually the economical format when the promotion discounts the entire bird.
- Use store brands where the recipe allows. Stuffing mix, gravy, canned vegetables, pumpkin, evaporated milk and pie crusts rarely require a premium brand for a traditional result.
- Prefer canned or frozen vegetables when fresh prices rise. Canned peas, green beans and corn and frozen peas are predictable portions with little trimming waste. Buy fresh carrots, celery or cranberries when their local price is competitive.
- Audit the pantry. Cross off broth, onion, poultry seasoning, butter or margarine, milk and flour before shopping. These small duplicate purchases can consume the money saved on the turkey.
- Evaluate the dessert format. A ready-made pumpkin pie is simplest. Pumpkin, crust and evaporated milk can be cheaper if the component prices are on promotion and you already have baking basics.
- Use pickup only when it protects the total. Compare the final pickup or delivery screen, including fees and substitutions. Delivery that adds several dollars can cost more than a short store visit.
- Leave room for tax and substitutions. The $32–$40 target is before tax. If an advertised item is out of stock, replace it with the closest store-brand or canned equivalent instead of adding an unplanned premium side.
Package-size math: why the full basket can win
Six people do not need exactly six rolls, six potatoes or one-sixth of a can. Retail packages are lumpy: a dozen rolls, a 5-pound potato bag and a 12-ounce cranberry bag are standard sizes. Buying smaller specialty portions can raise the unit price and create more packaging waste. The full promotional basket may therefore cost less per serving even when it contains food for another meal.
Plan the leftovers before shopping. Turkey can become sandwiches or soup; extra mashed potatoes can be reheated; celery, carrots and cranberries can carry into the following week. If your household does not eat leftovers, choose the lower end of the turkey range and skip optional sweet potatoes or extra vegetables rather than paying for food that will be discarded.
Food-safety equipment and the one check that matters
USDA FSIS advises using a food thermometer to verify that the turkey is done. An instant-read food thermometer is the key equipment purchase for this list. Follow the package and USDA cooking directions for your bird, and check the thickest portions with the thermometer rather than relying on color or the clock alone. A cheap thermometer is a better use of a few dollars than buying an additional garnish or premium side.
