Which Truecaller alternative should you try first?
The best choice depends on whether you want a built-in tool, a visual caller-ID experience or stronger scam-call assistance. There is no current, independent, apples-to-apples accuracy benchmark for these services in India, so it would be misleading to rank them by a percentage or declare one universally most accurate.

Use the built-in option that already exists on your phone before granting a separate app access to contacts, call history or SMS. A standalone app can add reverse lookup or visual features, but it also introduces another company, permission set and privacy policy into your calls.

What caller identification can—and cannot—tell you
Caller-ID databases generally associate a phone number with a business name, a user-submitted name or a spam category. That association can help you decide whether to answer, silence or investigate a call. It does not authenticate the person speaking, establish that a number really belongs to a bank, or make an unsolicited request safe.
TRAI describes native smartphone tools and third-party services as using crowdsourced information for name and spam identification, and warns that “the crowd-sourced name identity information may not be reliable, in many instances.” Numbers can be recycled, businesses can change providers, and fraudsters can spoof the number shown on your screen. A familiar name therefore remains only a clue.
- For a bank, wallet, insurer or investment service, end the call and dial the number printed on your card, statement or official website.
- For a delivery or ride service, open the company’s app and check the order rather than trusting a caller’s claimed identity.
- For a government office, use the department’s published contact details and never disclose one-time passwords or remote-access codes on an inbound call.
- For a family member who appears to be in an emergency, call a known number or another trusted contact before sending money.
Phone by Google: the strongest first test for Android
What it does
Google’s Phone help documents caller ID and spam protection for supported phones. The feature can identify businesses, warn that an incoming number is suspected spam and, when you enable the optional filter, block suspected spam calls. Caller ID and spam protection is on by default where supported, but you can turn it off.
Google says that using these functions may require your phone to send information about calls to Google. Numbers can be sent to identify a business or determine whether a call is spam. Google also says it does not obtain phone numbers from your personal contacts for this purpose. That is a specific data-flow explanation, not a promise that every phone model or region exposes identical controls.
How to review the settings
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the three-dot menu, choose Settings, then open Caller ID and spam.
- Review the switch for caller ID and spam protection. Leave it on if you want business names and suspected-spam warnings; turn it off if that data sharing is not acceptable to you.
- If your version offers spam filtering, read the description and enable it only if you are comfortable with suspected-spam calls being blocked or screened.
Menu wording can vary by phone maker and software build. If you do not see the setting, update the Phone app, confirm that it is the phone’s active dialer and check whether your device or region supports the feature.

Version requirements and a commonly misunderstood feature
Some Phone functions require Android 6.0 or newer. Google’s fake-call detection requires Android 12 or newer, along with Phone, Contacts and Google Messages with RCS enabled. Fake-call detection is separate from ordinary caller-ID labeling, so having an older Android version does not necessarily mean that all caller-ID and spam controls are unavailable.
Samsung Smart Call: check your Galaxy before installing anything
Capabilities
Samsung India says Smart Call “lets you know who’s calling even when the number isn’t on your contact list.” It can label suspected fraud or spam and gives you options to report or block those calls. Samsung identifies Hiya as the service provider. Hiya’s information for Samsung also explains that an incorrect identity can be reported for removal.

Samsung explicitly warns that available functions vary by country and device. A setting shown in a support article may therefore be absent on an imported handset, an older model or a device using a different regional firmware.
How to enable it
- Open the Phone app on your Galaxy.
- Tap the three-dot menu and open Settings or Call settings.
- Look for Caller ID and spam protection, sometimes presented as the Smart Call control.
- Enable the feature, then choose the available options for identifying, reporting or blocking spam.
If the control is missing, check your model’s support documentation and software updates. Do not assume that installing another app will recreate a feature Samsung has limited by region.
When Smart Call is the better choice
Smart Call is the practical first choice when you already own a Galaxy and only need basic identification and spam handling. It avoids the setup of a second dialer and lets you report a wrong label within the integrated experience. If you want large contact photos, reverse lookup or SMS blocking, compare a standalone app’s permissions before switching.

Those features make it the clearest separate-app option in this comparison for someone who wants more than a text label beside an incoming number.

Store ratings, permissions, availability and pricing can change. Read the current listing on your device and the app’s privacy policy before installation.
Safer setup checklist
- Install the app only from the official app store listing and inspect the developer name, recent update date and requested permissions.
- Review whether it asks for contacts, call logs, phone status, SMS or default-dialer access. Grant only permissions required for the features you intend to use.
- In Android’s default-app settings, confirm whether making Eyecon the caller-ID or phone app will change how calls are placed and screened.
- Test identification and blocking with low-risk calls before relying on it for business or financial calls.
- Revisit permissions and the privacy policy after major updates; an app’s data practices can change even when its main screen looks the same.
Who should choose it
Eyecon fits users who value an incoming caller’s photo, a visual contact book or reverse lookup and are willing to manage a separate app. It is not automatically the best privacy choice: the convenience of a richer caller profile must be weighed against the data the app can access.
Hiya AI Phone: promising assistance, but verify India support
Hiya’s official AI Phone product page describes intelligent call summaries and transcripts, real-time scam detection and synthetic-voice detection. These functions go beyond simply matching a number to a name and may appeal to users who want help assessing suspicious conversations.
The available product information does not establish an India-specific rollout, local pricing or which Android and iPhone configurations receive each capability. Check the current app-store listing and the provider’s terms from India before signing up or paying. Do not treat a feature shown on a global product page as proof that it is enabled for your Indian number.

Because summaries, transcripts and voice analysis can involve sensitive conversation content, read the data-retention and processing disclosures carefully. Use such features only when their privacy implications fit the calls you handle.

Built-in services are not automatically private
A feature integrated into the dialer can reduce the number of apps on your phone, but it still processes call-related information. Google’s disclosure is unusually direct: caller-ID and spam protection may send numbers involved in calls to Google for business or spam identification, while Google says it does not get numbers from your contact list. Decide whether that exchange is acceptable rather than assuming “built in” means “local only.”
Separate apps expand the decision
With Eyecon or another standalone app, evaluate three layers: the permissions requested by the app, the permissions required when it becomes the default caller-ID or dialer service, and the provider’s current privacy policy. Contact access may improve name and photo matching but exposes information about people who never installed the app. SMS access can support message blocking while also revealing potentially sensitive content.
Permission review after installation
- Open Android’s Settings and review the app’s permissions individually.
- Disable access that is not needed for the feature you use, then test whether caller identification still works.
- Check battery, background-data and notification settings if the app is not responding reliably.
- Remove default-app status before uninstalling if calls stop opening in your preferred dialer.
- Delete the app and revoke permissions if its behavior, advertising or data requests no longer match your expectations.
How to choose by need
You want the least setup
Use Phone by Google on a supported Android phone, or Smart Call on a compatible Galaxy. Both are integrated and provide the essential warning-and-blocking workflow without adding a separate caller-ID app.

You receive frequent suspected scams
Start with the spam labels and blocking controls already available on your phone. Consider Hiya AI Phone only after confirming that its scam detection, transcripts or summaries are actually available for your Indian account and device.
You are deciding primarily on privacy
Compare the data disclosures rather than relying on a brand reputation. Google explains its call-number processing and contact-list boundary; a separate app should be judged by its current permission prompts and privacy policy. If you cannot accept the required data access, leave caller identification disabled and use manual verification instead.
Troubleshooting when identification or blocking fails
No caller name appears
- Confirm caller ID and spam protection is enabled in the Phone app or Smart Call settings.
- Check that the app you configured is the active phone or caller-ID service.
- Install pending system and app updates, then restart the phone.
- Remember that an unlisted personal number may have no business record, and a crowdsourced database may contain no reliable name.
A legitimate call is labeled spam
Do not answer sensitive requests solely because the label is wrong. Use the app’s report or correction control where available, then contact the organization through an independently sourced number. Samsung and Hiya describe reporting incorrect identities for removal; correction may not be immediate.
Important calls are being blocked
Review the spam-filter list and blocked numbers, and turn off automatic filtering if it is catching expected calls. Add trusted numbers to your contacts, but continue to verify unusual requests because contact status does not prevent caller-ID spoofing.
The feature is missing on a Galaxy
Samsung’s Smart Call functions vary by country and device. Check the phone’s regional software and support page rather than assuming an app malfunction. Imported devices may expose a different set of controls.
A standalone app changes call behavior
Open Android’s default-app settings, select your preferred phone application and remove the separate app’s default status. Recheck permissions before deciding whether to uninstall it.
A safe workflow for unknown callers
- Let the phone’s caller-ID or spam warning inform your initial decision, but do not treat it as proof.
- If the call is unexpected, allow it to go to voicemail or ask the caller to state the organization and purpose without confirming personal details.
- End the call before opening a bank, delivery or government app to verify the claim independently.
- Never share one-time passwords, card PINs, full card numbers, remote-access codes or screen-control permissions with an inbound caller.
- Block and report obvious fraud, then preserve messages or call details if you need to report the incident.
The practical advantage of these alternatives is better triage: you can spot likely business or spam calls sooner and decide which ones deserve attention. The final identity check still belongs to you.
