A remote professional may do better with project work, while someone with a qualifying car may prefer rideshare or delivery. Pet care, home tasks, grocery shopping and short local shifts follow different rules again.
This guide organizes the strongest examples by category rather than pretending that one app is best for everyone. Current availability, screening, fees, vehicle rules and payout options change by market, so confirm the worker terms for your location before signing up. The commonly quoted “40 best” label is broader than the evidence supports: the platforms below are representative options, not a verified ranking of 40 active apps.

#1 Best Overall
Remote freelance work
Upwork for professional projects
Upwork is the clearest example for remote freelance work. It suits writers, designers, developers, translators, marketers, consultants, virtual assistants and other professionals who can deliver a defined result online.
- What you need: A demonstrable skill, a computer, dependable internet and time to create proposals and complete projects.
- How work is obtained: You build a profile, respond to client postings and agree on a project or hourly arrangement.
- What to check: The platform’s current service charges, payment protections, identity checks and rules for your country.
Remote freelancing avoids fuel and vehicle wear, but unpaid time spent pitching, revising profiles or waiting for a first contract can materially reduce your effective hourly return. Track proposal time as well as paid project time.
Driving and delivery apps
Uber for rideshare
Uber is a rideshare option where you transport passengers. Driver and vehicle eligibility are local; licensing, insurance, age, inspection and background-screening requirements can differ by market.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

It also states that more than half of U.S. drivers use the platform for fewer than 10 hours per week, a company-reported figure rather than an independent estimate. Uber’s marketplace explanation says higher rider prices do not necessarily create sustained higher earnings per driver because additional drivers may enter; in the adjustment described by Uber, average hourly earnings typically return toward previous levels in about eight weeks. Treat that as Uber’s account of cited research, not a universal law for every city or period.
The company describes driver choice this way: “Everyone who drives on our platform has the ability to choose where and when they want to work.” That flexibility does not guarantee profitable demand during the hours you have available. Compare completed-trip revenue with mileage, cleaning, maintenance, insurance, depreciation and unpaid time between rides.
DoorDash for restaurant and convenience delivery
DoorDash uses an offer-based model. Its official pay explanation says a Dasher’s earnings can include base pay, promotions and tips. The offer shown before acceptance reflects estimated time, distance and desirability, and the guaranteed minimum is displayed in the offer. DoorDash also states, “100% of tips received by DoorDash will go to the Dasher(s) associated with fulfilling the order, on top of base pay and promotions.”

- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
DoorDash’s current payout terms list weekly direct deposit, eligible Fast Pay once per day for $1.99 per transaction, and instant deposits through DoorDash Crimson. Eligibility, account conditions and bank-processing times apply, and deposits can be delayed. These are DoorDash terms, not an industry-wide standard. Its policy also says, “Base pay will not change based on the customer tip amount.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore accepting an order, consider the full route, not just the displayed dollar amount. A short order with a difficult pickup, apartment access or a long return trip may produce less net pay than its headline value suggests.
Uber Eats and other delivery choices
Uber’s delivery guide also identifies Uber Eats, Walmart Spark and Amazon Flex as delivery or retail-work examples. Their acceptance rules, vehicle modes, scheduling systems and payment terms are separate from rideshare terms. Do not assume that approval for one service automatically qualifies you for another.
Grocery and retail shopping
Instacart
Instacart combines shopping with delivery. The work can involve selecting items, handling substitutions, communicating with customers and carrying groceries. Confirm whether your market requires a particular vehicle type, insulated equipment, age threshold or background check.
Because a batch can include shopping time, checkout, loading and driving, calculate net earnings from the moment you begin the batch until you finish the delivery and return to an area where another order is realistic. Heavy orders and apartment deliveries can add labor that is not obvious from mileage alone.
Retail delivery and scheduled routes
Walmart Spark and Amazon Flex are named in Uber’s delivery guide as retail or package-delivery examples. Their availability is highly location-dependent. Check the current worker page for route scheduling, vehicle standards, package-handling expectations, insurance and payout timing before buying equipment or reserving hours.
Rank #3
Local services and home tasks
Thumbtack for finding local clients
Thumbtack is a lead-generation marketplace for local professionals. It can fit cleaners, handymen, photographers, tutors, movers, event workers and other service providers who can show a portfolio or clear description of their offer.
The key question is customer-acquisition cost. Determine whether you pay for leads, how often inquiries convert, what refunds or credits apply and how much travel is required. A service that looks profitable before lead charges and travel may not be profitable after them.
TaskRabbit for defined tasks
TaskRabbit is oriented toward practical local assignments such as assembly, moving help, mounting, errands and home projects. Read each task’s scope carefully, including tools, lifting, stairs, parking and cancellation expectations. Only accept work you can perform safely and legally; a platform listing is not a substitute for a trade license or insurance where one is required.
Pet care
Rover for sitting, boarding and walks
Rover is designed for pet care, including walks, sitting and boarding arrangements that vary by market. Approval can involve a profile review, identity or background screening and service-specific requirements. Your home, schedule, other animals and ability to handle emergencies affect which bookings are appropriate.
Price the entire commitment: meet-and-greets, feeding or medication instructions, transport, cleanup and communication time. Keep written instructions and an emergency contact for every booking, and verify the platform’s current protection and cancellation terms instead of assuming that every incident is covered.
Local shift marketplaces
Wonolo and GigSmart
Wonolo and GigSmart connect workers with local shifts. These can suit people who prefer a known start and end time over continuously searching for delivery offers. A shift may require standing, lifting, warehouse work, event support or other physical activity.
Rank #4
- Confirm the exact address, check-in process and transportation plan.
- Read clothing, equipment, age and physical requirements before accepting.
- Check cancellation and no-show rules; a missed shift can affect future access.
- Compare the posted pay with commute time and any parking or transit expense.
Shift availability can be uneven. A city with many listings one week may have few the next, so do not treat a single successful booking as a predictable weekly income.

Eligibility and setup checklist
Requirements differ by app and geography, but most workers should be prepared for some combination of the following:
- Government identification and identity verification.
- Background screening, where required.
- A valid driver’s license, insurance and vehicle inspection for driving work.
- Proof that you can legally work in the relevant location.
- A smartphone with current operating-system support and reliable data service.
- A bank account or debit arrangement that supports the platform’s payout method.
- Tools, protective equipment, storage space or lifting ability for specific tasks.
- A computer, portfolio and quiet workspace for remote projects.
Read the worker agreement and privacy notice before submitting sensitive information. Approval may be conditional, delayed or unavailable in your area even when the app appears in an app store.
How to compare earnings honestly
No figure in this guide is a universal hourly wage. Gross pay changes with location, timing, demand, tips, task mix and your own acceptance choices. Compare apps using your own records.
- Choose a consistent test period. Record every hour spent logged in, traveling to a job, waiting, shopping, delivering, completing the task and returning to a productive area.
- Record all receipts. Include fuel or charging, maintenance, tires, depreciation, parking, tolls, supplies, equipment, insurance and platform charges.
- Separate gross from net. Add pay, tips and bonuses, then subtract work-related costs. Divide the result by all hours committed, not only the time an app marked as active.
- Compare like with like. Test similar days and times, because a weekend dinner shift cannot fairly be compared with a quiet weekday afternoon.
- Recheck after expenses change. A vehicle repair, higher insurance premium or new platform fee can change which app is worthwhile.
For per-offer delivery, the acceptance screen’s guaranteed amount is only one input. For freelance work, include unpaid pitching and revisions. For local services, include lead costs and travel. For shifts, include the commute and unpaid onboarding time.
Payout speed and cash-flow planning
Fast access to money can matter as much as the headline rate, but payout options carry conditions. DoorDash, for example, lists weekly direct deposit, eligible Fast Pay for $1.99 per transaction and instant deposits through DoorDash Crimson. Eligibility and bank processing can delay funds. Other platforms may use weekly, daily, scheduled or milestone-based payments.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Before relying on gig income for a bill, verify the minimum balance, payout day, identity requirements, transfer fee, holiday schedule and account restrictions in the current terms. Keep a cash buffer because demand and payout timing can change.
Privacy and account security
Gig apps often need more personal information from workers than customers. A 2025 paper titled Gig Work at What Cost? examined 16 platforms and reported that 15 shared more types of worker data than customer data in its sample. The result applies to the apps, versions and methods studied; it does not prove that every platform has identical practices today.
Read the current privacy disclosure and understand retention, sharing, location tracking, identity verification and deletion choices. Use a unique password, enable multifactor authentication when available, avoid submitting documents over unofficial channels and remove access from old devices. If an app requests a permission unrelated to the task, ask why before granting it.
Equipment and operating costs
A smartphone, charging cable and dependable data plan are basic operating tools. Drivers may find an adjustable smartphone car mount useful for navigation, but it is an optional accessory, not a platform requirement unless the platform expressly says otherwise. Never handle the phone while driving; set navigation before moving and follow local hands-free laws.
For task work, price tools, protective equipment, storage bins and cleaning supplies before accepting a booking. For remote work, budget for computer maintenance, internet and a reliable backup method. Keep receipts and mileage records from the first day rather than trying to reconstruct them later.
Recordkeeping and taxes
Gig income generally requires organized records even when a platform reports your payments. Keep a separate ledger for each app, including dates, gross pay, tips, fees, miles, supplies and transfers. A World Bank document describes tools that automate tax reporting for freelancers and discusses a pilot for aggregating workers’ accounts across platforms; that discussion does not establish current availability or suitability for every reader.
Tax rules depend on your country, state or province and business structure. Use official tax guidance or a qualified professional for filing decisions. Do not treat an app’s payout summary as a complete expense record.

How to choose one or two apps
- Match the work to your advantage. A credentialed remote skill, an efficient vehicle, a local trade, comfort with animals or willingness to take physical shifts points to different categories.
- Verify local access. Check the worker signup page, service area, waitlist, screening and current terms for your exact location.
- Estimate startup cost. Count equipment, insurance changes, supplies, data service and unpaid onboarding.
- Run a limited trial. Track every hour and expense for several comparable sessions before committing more money.
- Keep a backup category. Demand is volatile. A remote project marketplace, local service marketplace or shift app may fill gaps when delivery demand is weak, but only if its requirements and economics work for you.
Using multiple apps can increase the chance of finding work, but it also creates more privacy exposure, account rules and recordkeeping. Do not accept overlapping bookings or violate exclusivity, safety or platform policies.
Common mistakes that reduce profit
- Using gross pay as an hourly wage without subtracting vehicle, equipment and unpaid-time costs.
- Buying accessories or a new vehicle before confirming local demand and approval.
- Ignoring screening, licensing, insurance or physical requirements until after signup.
- Accepting every offer and discovering that long returns, parking or wait times erase the margin.
- Relying on a promotional incentive or one unusually busy weekend as a normal forecast.
- Sharing more personal data than necessary or using the same password across worker accounts.
- Failing to keep mileage, receipts and payout records from the start.
Bottom line
There is no single best gig app. Upwork is the representative choice for remote professional projects; Uber fits qualifying rideshare drivers; DoorDash and Uber Eats cover food delivery; Instacart and retail-delivery services cover shopping and packages; Thumbtack and TaskRabbit fit local services; Rover fits pet care; and Wonolo or GigSmart fit scheduled shifts. Select by category, verify local eligibility, measure net earnings over a consistent period and protect your data. That process is more reliable than any universal “best” ranking.
