The best alternative to a neocloud depends on what you are buying besides GPU time. Hyperscalers such as AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure add managed deployment, identity, storage, compliance and worldwide regions. Serverless GPU platforms reduce idle capacity for experiments and bursty traffic. Managed serving companies package model deployment and scaling. Kubernetes projects such as llm-d improve portability, while NVIDIA DGX Cloud Lepton provides a marketplace route to several GPU suppliers.
There is no universally cheapest choice. Published H100 starting prices range from $1.40 to $4.50 per GPU-hour in one 2026 comparison, but the figures mix hourly, per-second, token and serverless billing. Your real cost also includes storage, data transfer, orchestration, support, engineering time and idle capacity. Use the options and budgeting method below to select a deployment path that fits your model, traffic, compliance obligations and operating skills.

What a neocloud is—and when an alternative makes sense
Microsoft defines a neocloud as “a cloud provider built specifically for GPU compute and AI workloads rather than general-purpose enterprise applications.” Neoclouds generally emphasize deep accelerator inventories, bare-metal access, fast interconnects and predictable GPU-hour pricing. Hyperscalers instead emphasize managed services, broad regions, enterprise identity, storage, networking, compliance programs and integration with existing data systems.
That distinction matters because a low GPU rate is not the same as a low deployment cost. A bare GPU instance may leave you responsible for driver compatibility, container images, autoscaling, health checks, observability, patching, failover and capacity reservations. A managed endpoint can cost more per accelerator hour while saving engineering labor and reducing the number of machines that sit idle.

Microsoft’s explainer, quoting Synergy Research Group in 2025, puts the named neocloud market above $25 billion and projects it could approach $400 billion by 2031, near a 58% compound annual growth rate. That is a secondary quotation rather than an independently verified primary report, so treat it as market context, not a precise forecast.

Hyperscaler managed ML platforms
AWS SageMaker
SageMaker is a practical alternative when your data, permissions and monitoring already live in AWS. The 2026 comparison from DigitalOcean highlights shadow deployments for testing a new model alongside production traffic, multi-model and multi-container endpoints for consolidating workloads, and batch transform for jobs that do not need a continuously running API.
Those features can change the economics of an endpoint. A shadow deployment lets you measure quality and latency before switching users. Multi-model endpoints may reduce the number of always-on instances when models have different traffic peaks. Batch transform avoids paying for an online endpoint during overnight or weekly jobs. You still need to choose instance types, configure autoscaling, manage model artifacts and account for storage and data-transfer charges.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Google Vertex AI
Vertex AI suits teams using Google’s data, analytics and identity services. The same comparison identifies canary traffic splitting, GPU and TPU support, and drift monitoring. Canary routing is useful when you want to move a measured percentage of requests to a new model rather than perform an all-at-once cutover. Drift monitoring can alert you when production inputs or predictions change enough to invalidate a model’s assumptions.
TPU availability and software compatibility must be tested with your specific model; a lower theoretical accelerator cost does not help if conversion work or unsupported operators slow delivery. Budget for endpoint uptime, artifact storage, logging and any cross-region data movement.
Azure Machine Learning
Azure Machine Learning is a strong fit for organizations using Microsoft identity and security controls. DigitalOcean’s comparison lists blue/green deployment, Prompt Flow, and integration with Azure OpenAI and Entra. Blue/green deployment keeps the existing version live while you validate a separate environment, then switches traffic when the new version is ready. Prompt Flow can help teams assemble and evaluate application pipelines around language models, while Entra integration centralizes access policies.
Managed features transfer operational work from your team to the platform, but they can also create cloud-specific configuration. Keep model files in portable formats, define infrastructure in code and record the exact serving arguments so you can reproduce the endpoint elsewhere.

When hyperscalers are financially sensible
- Your organization already pays for identity, networking, object storage, security tooling and support in the same cloud.
- Compliance, audit evidence, private networking or data residency is more valuable than the lowest raw GPU rate.
- You need global regions, managed rollout patterns or integration with existing batch and streaming pipelines.
- Your team is small enough that operating a GPU cluster would cost more in labor than the platform premium.
Flexible GPU and serverless platforms
RunPod
RunPod is positioned for community and serverless GPU capacity. Its documented multi-node clusters can reach 64 H100 GPUs and can use shared network volumes. That makes it suitable for distributed experiments, fine-tuning runs and inference that needs several nodes temporarily. Shared volumes can reduce repeated model downloads, but you should measure their storage and network charges and verify that the volume performance matches your loading pattern.
Because you control more of the runtime than on a fully managed endpoint, you must supply container images, health checks, metrics, autoscaling logic and recovery behavior. Set an automatic shutdown policy for development workers; an abandoned GPU can consume a month’s budget in hours.
Modal
Modal provides a Python-native serverless approach with scale-to-zero, burst capacity and per-second billing. It is attractive when traffic is intermittent or when a job runs for minutes rather than keeping a GPU online all day. Scale-to-zero removes idle compute charges, but the first request after a quiet period can incur a cold start. Measure model download time, container startup and initialization before promising a latency target.
Per-second billing does not eliminate other costs. Include image storage, persistent volumes, outbound traffic and any minimum charges in your estimate. Keep a warm instance only when the latency benefit exceeds its idle cost.

OVHcloud AI Deploy
OVHcloud AI Deploy is described as a containerized model-serving option on European sovereign infrastructure. It can be relevant when data must remain in a specified European jurisdiction or when procurement requires a regional provider. Confirm the exact region, certifications, accelerator inventory and support response time in your contract; sovereignty claims are meaningful only when the processing, backups and support paths meet your policy.
DigitalOcean’s inference stack
DigitalOcean combines GPU infrastructure with an inference layer that includes model routing, bring-your-own-model support and one OpenAI-compatible key for more than 70 models, according to its product comparison. A common API shape can simplify application migration, but compatibility does not guarantee identical tokenization, tool-calling behavior, context limits or latency. Test the models and parameters your application actually uses.
Managed model-serving layers
Hugging Face Inference Endpoints
Hugging Face Inference Endpoints is designed for direct deployment of Hub models with security profiles and automatic pairing with vLLM or SGLang, as described in DigitalOcean’s comparison. This can shorten the path from a tested model artifact to a production endpoint. Confirm the selected engine’s support for quantization, batching, speculative decoding and your accelerator before committing.

Product status changed in September 2025: Hugging Face said HUGS model-deployment containers were no longer offered and directed users to Dell Enterprise Hub and the Azure AI Foundry collection. Older descriptions of HUGS should not be treated as current availability. Verify the endpoint or enterprise product you can actually access, its regions and its support terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTogether AI, Fireworks AI and Baseten
Together AI is listed for fine-tuning and serving, making it a candidate when customization and hosting are part of the same workflow. Fireworks AI is positioned for fast open-weight model serving. Baseten is described as supporting compliance-focused open-weight deployments, including self-hosted or hybrid arrangements. These are serving layers rather than generic virtual machines, so compare model coverage, maximum context, batching behavior, data-retention policy, private networking and export options.
A managed serving layer can remove the need to build a scheduler, batching queue and optimized inference runtime. It does not remove the need to measure quality, throughput and tail latency under your workload. Ask for a reproducible test using your model version, prompt distribution, concurrency and response-length limits.
Portable Kubernetes inference with llm-d
llm-d is an architecture option rather than a capacity vendor. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation accepted it as a Sandbox project on March 24, 2026. Its stated goal is to make distributed inference a first-class cloud-native workload that can support any model, any accelerator and any cloud.
Documented capabilities include inference-aware traffic management, Kubernetes LeaderWorkerSet orchestration, prefill/decode disaggregation and hierarchical key-value-cache offload. Prefill/decode disaggregation separates prompt processing from token generation so each stage can be scaled for its own bottleneck. KV-cache offload can move cached attention data through a hierarchy of memory and storage tiers, which may reduce accelerator pressure but introduces latency and capacity trade-offs.
Choose llm-d when your organization can operate Kubernetes and wants a common control plane across GPU suppliers. It does not provide GPUs, erase cloud bills or remove on-call work. You still need cluster upgrades, device plugins, networking, capacity reservations, observability and incident response. Its value is portability and workload-aware scheduling, not a guaranteed lower price.
GPU marketplace access through NVIDIA DGX Cloud Lepton
NVIDIA announced DGX Cloud Lepton on May 18, 2025. The marketplace connects developers with tens of thousands of GPUs from partners including CoreWeave, Crusoe, Firmus, Foxconn, GMI Cloud, Lambda, Nebius, Nscale, SoftBank and Yotta. NVIDIA says developers can request capacity in specific regions for on-demand or long-term use and deploy across multi-cloud or hybrid environments.

This model can simplify procurement when your organization does not want ten separate contracts. It is also useful when a project requires a particular region or when one supplier has no quota. Marketplace participation and available capacity change, so verify the current provider list, prices, service-level terms, networking model and data-residency guarantees before planning around it.
Published H100 price snapshots: useful direction, not a benchmark
DigitalOcean’s 2026 comparison reports the following approximate starting snapshots for H100 capacity. The table mixes GPU-hour, token, per-second and serverless billing, so it is not an apples-to-apples total-cost comparison. Prices, regions, quotas and included services can change.
| Service | Approximate starting figure | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| RunPod | $2.69 per GPU-hour | Starting snapshot; total depends on capacity, storage and runtime choices |
| Modal | $3.95 per GPU-hour | Serverless economics and per-second billing can differ from an always-on hourly estimate |
| OVHcloud AI Deploy | $2.99 per GPU-hour | Containerized deployment; region and sovereign-infrastructure terms matter |
| Hugging Face Inference Endpoints | $4.50 per GPU-hour | Managed endpoint snapshot; verify current product status and included services |
| AWS SageMaker | $2.58 per GPU-hour | Managed service figure; storage, data transfer and endpoint configuration are extra considerations |
| Google Vertex AI | $3.69 per GPU-hour | Managed service figure; GPU or TPU choice and region affect the bill |
| Azure Machine Learning | $1.40 per GPU-hour | Starting snapshot; do not assume it represents an identical instance or workload |
For scale, multiplying a quoted rate by 730 hours gives a simple always-on illustration: $2.69 is about $1,964 per month, while $1.40 is about $1,022. Those are arithmetic examples, not invoices. They exclude storage, network transfer, software, support, taxes, discounts, minimums and the possibility that your endpoint scales down. A serverless job that runs 100 hours per month can cost far less than an always-on instance even at a higher hourly rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to calculate total cost of ownership
Build a cost sheet before choosing a provider. Separate fixed, usage-based and people costs so a low GPU price cannot hide an expensive operating model.
- Define demand: record requests per second, peak concurrency, input and output tokens, uptime target, batch windows and acceptable cold-start time.
- Estimate accelerator time: use measured throughput for your exact model, quantization and sequence lengths. Do not substitute a vendor’s theoretical peak for production throughput.
- Add non-GPU charges: include persistent disks, object storage, snapshots, inter-zone and egress traffic, load balancers, control-plane fees and observability retention.
- Price idle capacity: calculate the hours reserved for failover, rolling deployments and traffic spikes. A second replica may be necessary for availability even when average utilization is low.
- Value engineering time: estimate deployment, patching, incident response, capacity planning and compliance evidence. Compare that labor with the premium for a managed endpoint.
- Model discounts and commitments carefully: label one-time credits, promotional rates, reserved capacity and recurring commitments separately. Recalculate at full price before the promotion ends.
- Run a sensitivity check: model low, expected and high traffic, plus a 30-day period with a failed deployment or delayed quota. Select a service that remains affordable in the high case.
A useful unit is cost per million generated tokens at a stated latency and quality target. Divide the complete monthly bill by measured output tokens, then report the model, context length, concurrency, region and uptime assumptions. Without those qualifiers, two token prices can describe very different services.

Large fine-tuning or distributed training run
Evaluate RunPod multi-node capacity, a hyperscaler cluster and a marketplace route such as DGX Cloud Lepton. Confirm quota lead time, interconnect bandwidth, checkpoint storage and failure-recovery behavior. A cheaper GPU with slow interconnects can extend the run enough to erase the price advantage.
Regulated or data-sovereign workload
Prioritize region, support access, encryption, audit logs, retention and subcontractor terms. OVHcloud AI Deploy may fit a European sovereignty requirement; hyperscalers may fit an existing enterprise control framework. Ask where prompts, logs, backups and support diagnostics are processed.
Multi-cloud platform team
Use containerized models, an OpenAI-compatible application interface and Kubernetes-based scheduling. llm-d can provide inference-aware primitives, but retain provider-specific adapters for identity, storage and telemetry. A portable control plane is worthwhile only if your team can operate it reliably.

- Separate application and inference interfaces. Put your own gateway in front of providers. Normalize authentication, request IDs, timeouts, retries, streaming and structured errors.
- Standardize model packaging. Keep weights in a documented format and pin tokenizer, engine, CUDA or ROCm, quantization and generation settings. Store a tested container image in a registry you control.
- Use an OpenAI-compatible contract carefully. Treat it as an API convenience, not proof of behavioral parity. Test tool calls, JSON mode, streaming, context limits, safety filters and token accounting on every target.
- Automate infrastructure. Define networks, secrets, volumes, endpoints and autoscaling as code. A reproducible deployment is easier to move than a manually configured console project.
- Create a portability test. Deploy the same model to a second provider and compare quality, throughput, p50 and p95 latency, cold starts, failure rates and cost per million tokens.
- Keep data movable. Use an object-storage layout that can be copied, export logs in an open format and avoid placing irreplaceable artifacts in a provider-only registry.
- Set financial guardrails. Add budgets, alerts, maximum replica counts, idle shutdowns and approval gates for large GPU reservations. Review spend by model, environment and team every week.
- Document the exit path. Record how to export weights, prompts, fine-tuning data, evaluation sets, dashboards, secrets and DNS. Test the procedure before a contract or region becomes unavailable.
Operational pitfalls and fixes
Quota or capacity delays
GPU availability can vary by region and model. Request quota before announcing a launch date, keep a second region or supplier qualified, and maintain a smaller fallback model for emergencies. A marketplace can widen your options, but it does not guarantee immediate capacity.
Cold starts and model loading
Large weights can make scale-to-zero unsuitable for strict latency targets. Measure image pull, weight download, graph compilation and warm-up separately. Keep a minimal warm pool for interactive traffic and route batch work to scale-to-zero workers.
Unexpected egress and storage bills
Repeatedly moving checkpoints or returning long generations can dominate compute charges. Co-locate storage and inference where policy allows, cache immutable artifacts, compress transfers and set log-retention limits. Verify whether shared volumes charge for capacity, operations or both.
Silent quality changes
Provider updates can change engines, quantization defaults, safety filters or model revisions. Pin versions, maintain a fixed evaluation set and require a quality gate before upgrades. Record prompt templates and decoding parameters with every release.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Overbuilding Kubernetes
Portable orchestration is valuable only when the organization can fund platform engineering and on-call coverage. If the team has one model and predictable traffic, a managed endpoint may have a lower total cost even with a higher GPU rate. Adopt llm-d or a larger Kubernetes layer when portability and workload complexity justify the operational burden.
Bottom line: match the alternative to the cost you are actually trying to reduce
Choose a hyperscaler managed platform when integration, compliance and operational simplicity matter most. Choose serverless or flexible GPU capacity when utilization is intermittent and you can operate the runtime. Choose a managed serving layer when you want optimized inference without assembling a cluster. Choose llm-d when multi-cloud portability is a strategic capability and you can run Kubernetes. Choose DGX Cloud Lepton when a single marketplace access point and region-specific GPU sourcing simplify procurement.
Make the decision with measured throughput, complete monthly cost and a tested exit path. The lowest advertised GPU-hour rate is only one line in that calculation.
