They explain features and terminology, outline common use cases, and suggest products. That can reduce research time—but it should not replace checking the final price, seller, shipping cost, return terms, or recent price history.
For personal-finance purposes, the guide is best treated as a starting point. Amazon’s recommendations are not independent product tests, and the offer displayed when you reach checkout may differ from the offer originally associated with the guide.
What Amazon Shopping Guides do
A Shopping Guide is a category-level research tool. Instead of starting with one model, you start with a broad product type such as televisions, area rugs, dog food, running shoes, or face moisturizers.
The guide may include:
- Explanations of features that matter in the category
- Definitions of unfamiliar product terms
- Advice based on different uses or customer needs
- Information about brands
- Product recommendations that fit the guide’s categories
This makes the feature most useful when you know what you need to buy but do not yet know which specifications matter. For example, it can help you understand the difference between television display technologies or identify the relevant considerations when choosing running shoes.

It is less useful as proof that a recommended item is the cheapest, best-built, or best-reviewed option available. Recommendations are generated within Amazon’s shopping environment, and prices, sellers, coupons, and inventory can change.
How to find an Amazon Shopping Guide
Amazon’s layout varies by account, device, category, and staged feature rollout. There is not one guaranteed menu location for every shopper. On Amazon.com in the United States, try these access points:
- Use search autocomplete. Enter a broad category, such as “running shoes” or “area rugs,” in the Amazon search box. If a Shopping Guide suggestion appears, select it.
- Check Keep Shopping For. On the Amazon homepage, look for the Keep Shopping For area. Amazon may show a relevant guide based on your recent activity.
- Open the guide hub. Visit Amazon.com/guides, the current consumer-facing guide hub.
- Check the Amazon Shopping app. Guides may appear in personalized shopping areas, including Keep Shopping For.
Amazon previously promoted the address Amazon.com/AIShoppingGuides. The newer primary entry point is Amazon.com/guides, so an old article that presents the former address as the only current route may be out of date.
A sensible way to use a guide before spending money
- Begin with the category. Search for the type of product rather than a particular brand or model. This gives the guide room to explain the trade-offs.
- Identify the specifications you actually need. A feature is not automatically worth paying for. Match it to your use, space, durability requirements, and budget.
- Write down unfamiliar terms. Definitions in the guide can help you avoid buying an expensive version simply because its marketing language sounds more advanced.
- Create a shortlist. Use the recommendations as candidates, not as a final buying decision.
- Open each product detail page. Check the current total price, shipping, delivery date, condition, seller, return terms, and reviews.
- Compare like with like. Confirm that products have the same size, capacity, bundle contents, color, configuration, and warranty coverage before comparing prices.
This process helps prevent a common online-shopping error: selecting a product because it appears attractive in a guide, then overlooking a higher shipping charge, a smaller package, a used condition, or a recurring-order discount that changes the real cost.
Check the offer, not just the product
A product detail page can contain offers from Amazon and multiple third-party sellers. The recommendation itself does not guarantee that the currently selected offer comes from the seller evaluated when the guide was created.
Before placing the order, verify:

For qualifying purchases from third-party sellers made through Amazon.com, the A-to-z Guarantee can address issues such as non-delivery, materially different items, damage, defects, or failure to receive an agreed refund. It is not a blanket warranty and does not cover every purchase or every form of dissatisfaction. Compare it with the manufacturer’s warranty and the seller’s return policy rather than treating it as a substitute for either.

How to evaluate Amazon prices and discounts
Look beyond the percentage-off badge
A crossed-out List Price or Typical Price is not automatically evidence that you are seeing the lowest recent price. Compare the current total, shipping, coupon requirements, seller, and condition.
Amazon announced reference-price changes for 2026. Beginning April 23, 2026, a seller-provided List Price must be validated against a recent price at another retailer or a price at which customers purchased the item as Amazon’s Featured Offer. Beginning May 18, 2026, Amazon’s Typical Price calculation changes when more than half of the previous 90 days had prices below the non-promotional median.

It does not necessarily show every seller’s price or every offer that was available that day. Use it as context, not as a complete record of every possible deal.
Compare unit prices
For eligible everyday products, Amazon may show a price per unit in parentheses beside the listed price in search results. This is useful for comparing different package sizes, but check the unit itself. Amazon may calculate the figure by ounce, count, sheet, fluid ounce, or another measure.
A larger package is not automatically cheaper. Compare the same unit and account for waste, expiration, storage, and whether you would use the entire quantity.
Be careful with Today’s Deals
Today’s Deals is Amazon’s deal hub and lets shoppers browse current offers by category. Deal prices, quantities, and end times can change while the page is open. A deal is only relevant to your budget if the item meets your needs and the final checkout price is lower than realistic alternatives.

Subscribe & Save can reduce the price—or create unwanted deliveries
Subscribe & Save is intended for recurring purchases. You choose a delivery frequency, and orders continue until you change or cancel the subscription. Amazon describes discounts of up to 15%, but the actual discount depends on the product, seller-funded offers, coupons, and the particular order.
Before selecting it, check:
- Whether the displayed discount applies only to the first delivery
- The selected delivery frequency
- The next scheduled shipment date
- Whether a coupon must be clipped
- Whether the subscription remains active after the first order
Compare the recurring price with the ordinary one-time price. If you use a product slowly, a nominal discount may be outweighed by excess inventory or an unwanted charge. Review active subscriptions periodically and cancel products you no longer need.

Help Me Decide
Help Me Decide is a separate personalized recommendation feature. Amazon may show it after you have viewed several similar products. On an eligible product page, look for the Help Me Decide button. In the app or mobile browser, it may also appear under Keep Shopping For with the relevant product category.
Amazon says the feature can use browsing activity, searches, shopping history, preferences, product information, and customer reviews. It may present an upgrade choice and a budget option. The button does not appear on every product page or every account; Amazon needs to identify a suitable browsing pattern.

Amazon renamed Rufus to Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. Older references may still call it Rufus, but that is no longer the current product name.
Current access points described by Amazon include:
- The chat bubble with sparkles in the bottom navigation bar of the Amazon Shopping app
- The top of the screen on desktop
- Suggested questions on eligible product detail pages
- Amazon Lens Live, where available
Alexa for Shopping can answer product questions, compare items, summarize review information, and create custom shopping guides. To ask about a photo, open Alexa for Shopping, tap the + icon beside the text box, choose the camera or photo gallery, upload or take a picture, and ask a question.

Amazon Lens
In the Amazon Shopping app, tap the Lens icon in the search bar. You can upload an image, take a photo, or scan a barcode. Amazon may return exact-match and similar-product results.
“Similar” does not mean identical. Check model numbers, dimensions, materials, included accessories, seller, and condition before assuming the result is the same item shown in the photograph.
Customers say and Review Highlights
On selected product pages in the app, Amazon may show Review Highlights below the product image. Amazon’s newer material also refers to this review-summary area as Customers say.
These summaries can save time, but they should not replace targeted review reading. For an expensive or safety-sensitive purchase, inspect recent low-star reviews, reviews for the exact size or variant, and customer-uploaded photographs. A summary may omit a problem that matters to your use case.

- Variant-specific defects or sizing problems
- Whether the current coupon is available to your account
- Long-term durability beyond what customers report
- Prices available from local retailers or competing websites
For a major purchase, use the guide to learn the category, then verify specifications with the manufacturer and compare the final delivered cost elsewhere. For a low-cost routine item, the same checks can be shorter—but the unit price and recurring-order terms still deserve attention.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating a recommendation as a product test. It is a research aid, not an independent lab result.
- Assuming a guide has one permanent location. Try search autocomplete, Keep Shopping For, Amazon.com/guides, and the app.
- Assuming Help Me Decide is missing because of an error. It is selectively available and usually depends on recent browsing activity.
- Reading the discount instead of the price. Compare the current delivered total and relevant price history.
- Comparing different package sizes without checking the unit. Ounces, counts, sheets, and fluid ounces are not interchangeable.
- Leaving Subscribe & Save active unintentionally. Confirm the next shipment and cancel or edit the subscription when your needs change.
- Confusing the A-to-z Guarantee with a warranty. Buyer protection for qualifying transactions is not the same as manufacturer coverage.
