The 20 Most Comfortable Sandals, According to Hands-On Testing

By TheFinanceBase Team 17 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best comfortable sandal depends on how you plan to use it. For everyday walking, the Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed is the strongest all-around choice. For secure walking on mixed terrain, choose the Chaco Z/1 Classic or softer Chaco Z/Cloud 2. For water, value, and easy adjustability, the Teva Original Universal stands out. If you need toe protection, look at the KEEN Newport H2 or KEEN Whisper.

This list is an evidence-backed roundup of products selected from hands-on testing reported by OutdoorGearLab, Good Housekeeping, and PureWow. ResearchCore did not personally wear or test these sandals. The reviewers reported urban walks, travel, hiking, biking, rafting, lake days, and other real-world use, while Good Housekeeping also consulted podiatrists.

Below, each sandal is matched with the use case it fits best, its comfort strengths, and the trade-off to consider before spending your money.

What makes a sandal comfortable?

Comfort is not simply a matter of finding the softest sole. An extremely soft, flat, or unstable sandal can feel pleasant for a few minutes but become tiring over a full day. The most useful criteria are:

  • A secure fit: Your toes should not have to grip the footbed to keep the sandal on.
  • Adjustability: Straps that can be tightened or loosened help accommodate foot shape and swelling.
  • A contoured footbed: A shaped footbed can provide more structure than a flat flip-flop.
  • Moderate cushioning: Cushioning should absorb impact without making the foot unstable.
  • Enough toe room: Your toes should not hang over the front or press into a strap.
  • An appropriate outsole: Smooth casual soles are not a substitute for the traction and stability needed on trails or wet surfaces.

The podiatrists interviewed by Good Housekeeping emphasized cushioning, arch support, adjustable straps, a contoured footbed, a deep heel cup, and a secure fit. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons also cautions that many sandals provide less support and stability than closed shoes, while hiking and rafting sandals are often built more securely.

The 20 most comfortable sandals

Model Best for Why it stands out Important limitation
Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed Everyday comfort Contoured cork-latex footbed with an integrated foam cushion; the footbed can become more personalized with wear. Its open back is less secure on rough terrain, and leather versions are not waterproof.
Chaco Z/1 Classic Secure walking Adjustable straps, a molded footbed, arch support, and a grippy outsole suit city walking, travel, and mixed terrain. It looks and feels more substantial than a casual fashion sandal.
Chaco Z/Cloud 2 Cushioned adventure use Adds a softer foam layer to the Chaco platform while retaining strong traction, stability, and durability. Heavier and bulkier than casual sandals; the toe-loop adjustment may take patience.
Teva Original Universal Value and water-friendly travel Quick-dry recycled-polyester straps, multiple adjustment points, molded EVA cushioning, arch support, and a rubber outsole. Its sport-sandal appearance is less dressy than leather options.
Teva Original Universal Slim A slimmer sport-sandal profile Retains the adjustable, practical concept of the Original Universal in a less visually substantial silhouette. Offers less of the broad, rugged appearance some shoppers want for outdoor use.
Naot Kayla Dressier travel Suede-wrapped cork-and-latex footbed, broad color selection, and day-to-night styling work well for urban sightseeing and dinners. Not intended for wet conditions.
OluKai Kīpe‘a Slide Polished slide Premium styling, a cushioned feel, useful traction for a slide, and a secure-feeling fit. As a backless slide, it is better for errands, airports, and moderate walking than demanding hikes.
OluKai Kīpe‘a ‘Olu Sandals Leather comfort A thicker sole and cushioned footbed provided comfortable, irritation-free wear during a full day of city exploring in PureWow’s testing. Straps are not adjustable, sizes are generally whole sizes, and fit should be checked carefully.
KEEN Uneek Town-to-trail versatility Woven construction gives it a casual, sneaker-like look while retaining useful trail capability. The woven upper may feel warmer or less open than a conventional strappy sandal.
KEEN Newport H2 Protected toes and water use Water-sandal construction, toe coverage, stability, and protection make it useful when exposure matters more than minimal weight. More enclosed and substantial than a traditional sandal.
KEEN Whisper Closed-Toe Sport Sandal Women’s hiking and water use Protected toe, EVA cushioning, arch support, bungee-lace fit, and water-ready design suit river exploration, water parks, hiking, and camping. Its closed-toe outdoor design is practical rather than fashion-forward.
Bedrock Cairn Evo Rugged minimalist use Low-profile construction and extensive adjustability appeal to shoppers who want a minimalist outdoor sandal. Minimalist geometry may not suit people seeking substantial cushioning or a traditional arch structure.
Hoka Ora Recovery Slide 3 Post-activity recovery Designed for easy comfort on rest days after activity. It is not the right tool for secure distance walking, hiking, or wet-terrain adventures.
Cushionaire Luna Cork Footbed Budget casual wear A lower-cost route to the familiar two-strap cork-footbed format. Verify current materials, sizing, seller, and return terms; it is intended for casual rather than rugged use.
Reef Cushion Vista Hi Lightweight platform style Cushioned cork footbed, light construction, and platform height provide casual comfort with a fashion-oriented shape. No backstrap means less ankle stability; better for casual walking than long distances or rough terrain.
Teva Midform Infinity Platform walking Adjustable straps, quick-release lace lock, molded footbed, and arch support combine height with sport-sandal function. The toe-area strap may feel tight for some feet, and availability is generally in whole sizes.
Teva Tirra Longer active walks Contoured footbed, arch support, traction, quick-drying upper, and adjustable closures suit active vacations and uneven paths. Its practical outdoor styling is less appropriate for dressy occasions.
Dr. Scholl’s Women’s Islander Sandal Lower-cost anatomical-footbed option Contoured midsole, cushioning, and stretchy straps offer structure at a generally accessible price point. The outsole may be less durable or grippy than those on more rugged sport sandals.
Aetrex Vania Adjustable fashion wear Velcro closure, cork-and-jute midsole, leather look, and supportive arch combine fashion styling with adjustability. The arch position can take several days to adapt to, so break it in before a long trip.
Sam Edelman Bay Sandals Timeless fashion A style-forward, classic design for dressier everyday use. Comfort evidence is less technically detailed than for the sport and walking models; it is not a hiking sandal.

Best sandal for each situation

Best overall for everyday comfort: Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed

The Arizona Soft Footbed is the most balanced choice for casual walking, travel days, errands, and everyday wear. Its contoured cork-latex footbed supplies more structure than a flat sandal, while the integrated foam layer makes the initial feel softer than Birkenstock’s standard footbed.

The two-strap design can be adjusted, but the open back still limits how securely it stays on during fast walking or uneven ground. Choose it for sidewalks, airports, casual offices, and relaxed travel—not technical trails, rafting, or wet conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for secure walking: Chaco Z/1 Classic

The Z/1 Classic is the better pick when staying securely attached to your foot matters. Its adjustable strap system, molded footbed, arch support, and grippy outsole give it a stable feel for city walking, travel, and mixed terrain. Good Housekeeping named it the best overall walking sandal in its tested selection, with testers particularly valuing the arch support and adjustability.

It is not the lightest or most delicate-looking option. That is a worthwhile trade-off if a backless slide or loose flip-flop makes you grip with your toes.

Best cushioned adventure sandal: Chaco Z/Cloud 2

The Z/Cloud 2 adds a softer foam layer to the standard Chaco platform. OutdoorGearLab found the combination of cushioning, traction, stability, and durability useful for hiking and river activities. It is a strong option for people who want an outdoor sandal but prefer a less rigid underfoot feel than the Z/1 Classic.

Expect more weight and bulk than you would get from an everyday sandal. The toe-loop adjustment can also require some experimentation before the fit feels natural.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best value and water-friendly option: Teva Original Universal

The Original Universal is the practical value choice in this group. Teva lists quick-drying recycled-polyester straps, several adjustment points, a hook-and-loop closure, molded EVA cushioning, arch support, and a rubber outsole. Those features explain why both OutdoorGearLab and Good Housekeeping highlighted it for value, travel, and water activities.

It is especially useful when one pair needs to handle sightseeing, occasional wet conditions, and easy packing. It will not look as polished as a leather sandal, but its adjustability makes it easier to fit than many fashion-first styles.

Best slimmer sport sandal: Teva Original Universal Slim

The Original Universal Slim is for shoppers who like Teva’s adjustable sport-sandal concept but want a narrower-looking, less substantial silhouette. PureWow selected it for comfortable everyday wear. It is a reasonable middle ground between a casual fashion sandal and a visibly rugged outdoor sandal.

Do not assume the Slim version fits or performs identically to the standard Original Universal. Check the exact size chart, strap layout, and return policy for the version you purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best dressier travel sandal: Naot Kayla

The Naot Kayla is suited to urban travel when you want one pair that can move from sightseeing to dinner. Good Housekeeping highlighted its suede-wrapped cork-and-latex footbed, color range, and day-to-night versatility.

This is a city sandal, not a beach or rafting sandal. Keep it away from wet excursions, and allow time to test the footbed before relying on it for a high-mileage trip.

Best polished slide: OluKai Kīpe‘a Slide

The Kīpe‘a Slide offers a more refined appearance than most sport sandals while retaining a cushioned, secure-feeling platform and useful traction for a slide. It works well for errands, airports, casual social settings, and short-to-moderate walking.

Best leather comfort sandal: OluKai Kīpe‘a ‘Olu

PureWow reported a full day of exploring New York City in the Kīpe‘a ‘Olu without irritation, noting its thicker sole and cushioned footbed. It is a good choice for shoppers who want leather styling without going completely flat.

The straps are not adjustable and the style is generally sold in whole sizes, so fit is less forgiving. Try it on before committing to a long trip, and do not buy it solely because the upper looks comfortable.

Best town-to-trail style: KEEN Uneek

The KEEN Uneek bridges the gap between a sandal and a casual sneaker. OutdoorGearLab selected it for combining a relaxed appearance with trail utility. The woven upper gives more coverage and a distinctive look, which may appeal to people who dislike the exposed feel of conventional straps.

That extra upper can also feel warmer or less breathable than an open sandal. It is best for shoppers who value versatility and coverage over maximum airflow.

Best protected-toe water sandal: KEEN Newport H2

The Newport H2 is the choice when protecting the toes is a priority. KEEN positions it as a water sandal, and OutdoorGearLab selected it for foot protection. It offers more confidence around rocks, roots, and uneven surfaces than an open-toe casual sandal.

The protection comes with additional weight and coverage. If you want a barely-there feel for hot sidewalks, this will probably seem excessive; if you are crossing streams or traveling with children, the trade-off may be worthwhile.

Best women’s hiking and water sandal: KEEN Whisper

The KEEN Whisper combines a protected toe with EVA cushioning, arch support, a bungee-lace fit, and an outdoor-ready build. Good Housekeeping highlighted it for water parks, river exploration, hiking, and camping.

It is a practical rather than dressy sandal. Choose it when stability, protection, and water readiness matter more than a minimal or fashionable appearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best rugged minimalist sandal: Bedrock Cairn Evo

The Bedrock Cairn Evo is aimed at shoppers who want a rugged outdoor sandal with a lower-profile, minimalist design. OutdoorGearLab selected it for men seeking that combination of adjustability and outdoor utility.

Minimalist is not automatically more comfortable. If you prefer a thick cushioned sole, a pronounced traditional arch, or a deeply structured footbed, the Cairn Evo may feel too spare. It is best for people who already know they like minimalist footwear.

Best recovery slide: Hoka Ora Recovery Slide 3

The Ora Recovery Slide 3 belongs in a different category from the walking and hiking sandals. OutdoorGearLab selected it for rest days and post-activity comfort. It makes sense after a run, workout, or long day when you want an easy slide around the house, hotel, or campsite.

Do not mistake a recovery slide for a secure walking sandal. Its backless design is not suited to long-distance walking, hiking, or wet terrain where a stable attachment matters.

Best budget casual sandal: Cushionaire Luna Cork Footbed

The Cushionaire Luna is a lower-cost alternative to the familiar two-strap cork-footbed format. OutdoorGearLab named it a bargain-buy casual sandal, making it a possible choice for shoppers who want the look and basic structure without paying premium heritage-sandal pricing.

Because materials, sizing, seller conditions, and listings can vary, verify the exact version before ordering. Treat it as a casual sandal rather than a proven substitute for a rugged walking model.

Best lightweight platform slide: Reef Cushion Vista Hi

The Cushion Vista Hi pairs a cushioned cork footbed with a lightweight platform shape. It is a style-forward choice for casual walks, vacations, and everyday outfits when you want some height without a heavy shoe.

There is no backstrap, so it offers less ankle stability than the Chaco, Teva, or KEEN sport sandals. It is not the best choice for long-distance walking, steep paths, or rough terrain.

Best platform walking sandal: Teva Midform Infinity

The Midform Infinity adds platform height while keeping several functional details: adjustable straps, a quick-release lace lock, a molded footbed, and arch support. It is a useful option for someone who wants more height than the Original Universal but still wants an adjustable walking sandal.

Good Housekeeping noted that the toe-area strap can feel tight for some users. Availability is generally in whole sizes, so test the fit and make sure your toes are not being crowded before wearing it for a full day.

Best active sandal for longer walks: Teva Tirra

The Teva Tirra is built for active travel and longer walks. Its contoured footbed, arch support, traction, quick-drying upper, and adjustable closures make it more suitable for uneven paths and active vacations than a flat fashion sandal.

Its styling is practical and outdoorsy. That is a feature for trail use, but shoppers looking for one sandal to pair with dressier outfits may prefer the Naot Kayla, OluKai Kīpe‘a, or Aetrex Vania.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best lower-cost structured option: Dr. Scholl’s Women’s Islander

The Islander is worth considering if you want an anatomical-looking footbed, cushioning, and stretchy straps without moving to a premium-priced model. Good Housekeeping selected it with plantar-fasciitis-related considerations in mind because of its contoured midsole and cushioning.

That does not mean it treats plantar fasciitis. Good Housekeeping also noted that its outsole may be less durable or grippy than those on more rugged alternatives. Choose it for casual walking, not demanding outdoor use.

Best adjustable fashion sandal: Aetrex Vania

The Aetrex Vania combines a leather look with a Velcro closure, cork-and-jute midsole, and supportive arch. It is a good fit for someone who wants fashion styling but still needs the ability to fine-tune the fit.

The arch position may take several days to feel natural. Break it in around the house and on short outings before taking it on a trip or wearing it for a full day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best timeless fashion sandal: Sam Edelman Bay

The Sam Edelman Bay is the style-first pick. PureWow included it as a timeless-design option among its tested and recommended styles. It makes the most sense for dressier everyday use, dinners, and outfits where a technical sport sandal would look out of place.

  • Arch Support: Look for womens flip flops that provide adequate arch support to prevent foot fatigue and promote proper alignment. This is especially important when walking on uneven surfaces like sandy beaches or wet pool areas.
  • Microfiber Leather: Flip flops woman made from microfiber leather, as this material is durable, water-resistant, and easy to clean. It can withstand exposure to water and sand, making it a practical choice for beach, pool, and seaside wear.
  • Yoga Mat Footbed: Opt for flip flops for women with a yoga mat footbed for added cushioning and comfort. The soft and supportive material of this provides a plush feel underfoot, making it ideal for extended wear in various environments.
  • Rubber Soles: Look for flip flops with rubber soles that offer excellent grip and traction on wet and slippery surfaces. The outsole provides stability and prevents slips and falls when walking on pool decks, wet tiles, or sandy beaches.
  • Comfortable Straps: Select womens thong sandals with comfortable and secure straps that keep your feet in place while walking. The straps or toe posts can provide a customized fit and prevent chafing or blisters during extended wear.

The comfort evidence is less technically detailed than for the walking and hiking models in this list. If you expect to cover many miles, prioritize a secure strap system, footbed structure, and traction over appearance.

How to choose the right pair before you spend

1. Match the sandal to the terrain

For sidewalks and errands, a contoured casual sandal or polished slide may be enough. For long urban walks, look for a secure strap system, supportive footbed, cushioning, and traction. For hiking, rafting, or water parks, favor closed-toe or water-ready designs such as the KEEN Newport H2, KEEN Whisper, Teva Original Universal, Chaco Z/Cloud 2, or Teva Tirra.

For extended hiking or multi-day, high-mileage travel, a supportive sneaker may be a better choice than any sandal. Sandals generally leave more of the foot exposed and usually provide less support than a closed shoe.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check the exact variant

Several names in this guide refer to different products within the same family. The Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed is not the same as the standard Arizona. The Chaco Z/1 Classic is not the same as the softer Chaco Z/Cloud 2. The KEEN Newport H2 and KEEN Whisper have different fits and designs. Teva’s Original Universal and Original Universal Slim are also distinct versions.

Before ordering, confirm the product name, color, size system, width, strap configuration, materials, and return policy. Product photos and inventory can change, especially when a listing combines several variants under one page.

3. Try sandals on later in the day

Feet can swell during the day. Good Housekeeping recommends trying sandals later in the day and checking that you have toe clearance without over-tightening the straps. Walk on a hard surface and pay attention to whether you are gripping with your toes, sliding forward, or feeling pressure from a strap.

A comfortable first impression is not enough. Walk for several minutes, turn, climb a few steps if possible, and check whether the heel stays centered. A sandal that requires constant adjustment is unlikely to be comfortable over many hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Break them in before travel

Even a supportive footbed or well-reviewed sandal may need an adaptation period. Start with short sessions at home or around the neighborhood. This is particularly important for structured-footbed models such as Birkenstock and Aetrex, and for any sandal with a new arch position or firm straps.

Do not make a new pair your only footwear on the first day of a walking-heavy trip. Keep a proven backup pair, and confirm the retailer’s return rules before wearing the sandals outdoors.

What about plantar fasciitis and other foot pain?

No sandal on this list should be described as a treatment or universal solution for plantar fasciitis. Mayo Clinic recommends supportive shoes with a low-to-moderate heel, thick soles, arch support, and cushioning as part of plantar-fasciitis self-care. Persistent or worsening pain warrants professional evaluation.

For shoppers thinking about plantar-fasciitis considerations, structured options such as the Chaco Z/1 Classic, Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed, Teva Tirra, or Dr. Scholl’s Islander may be more reasonable starting points than flat flip-flops. The right choice still depends on your foot shape, symptoms, and tolerance for arch structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

People with bunions, swelling, numbness, recurring blisters, or pain that changes their walking pattern should prioritize fit and medical guidance over a product label. An adjustable strap can help accommodate shape, but it cannot correct an underlying condition.

Shopping and cost-per-wear advice

Retail prices, colors, size ranges, stock, sale status, seller identity, and shipping terms are volatile. As a research snapshot—not a current price guarantee—the cited pages showed representative prices of about $65 for the Teva Original Universal, $95–$105 for classic Chaco models, about $110 for OluKai Kīpe‘a models, and approximately $155–$160 for the Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed.

For example, a $120 sandal worn 60 times costs $2 per wear, while a $45 sandal worn five times costs $9 per wear. This is not a durability test or a guarantee; it is a way to compare a premium everyday sandal with a cheaper pair you may use only occasionally.

Before buying, compare the exact model, size, color, return policy, seller, shipping, and current price for the Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed, Teva Original Universal, Chaco Z/1 Classic, and KEEN Whisper closed-toe sandals. Amazon is one possible shopping path for some featured models, but availability and seller information can change. If a listing combines multiple variants or the seller details are unclear, check the brand’s own listing or an authorized retailer.

For specialty models, also compare the Naot Kayla travel sandal, KEEN Newport H2, and OluKai Kīpe‘a Slide through a retailer that clearly displays the exact model and return terms. A small price difference is usually less important than being able to return a sandal that does not fit.

Testing and evidence behind this roundup

OutdoorGearLab reports testing sandals through urban hikes, neighborhood walks, bike rides, lake days, day hikes, and rafting trips. Its women’s guide reports testing 19 pairs, while its broader 2026 guide includes long-term testing updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Good Housekeeping says its editors and consumer testers walked multiple miles in New York City and while traveling, and it consulted podiatrists about support, fit, and foot health. PureWow reports that one editor personally tested seven of the 16 styles in its comfort guide, supplementing that work with editorial-team recommendations and review research.

Those methods make the list useful, but they do not make any sandal universally comfortable. Foot shape, arch height, width, gait, terrain, and personal tolerance all affect the result. The most reliable recommendation is the one that matches your use case and lets you walk naturally without gripping, sliding, or compensating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most comfortable sandal for walking all day?

The Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed is the strongest everyday choice in this roundup because it combines a contoured cork-latex footbed with an integrated foam cushion. For more secure walking on mixed terrain, choose the Chaco Z/1 Classic or Chaco Z/Cloud 2 instead.

Are these sandals suitable for plantar fasciitis?

Some structured models, including the Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed, Chaco Z/1 Classic, Teva Tirra, and Dr. Scholl’s Islander, may be reasonable options for shoppers seeking cushioning and support. None should be presented as treating plantar fasciitis. Persistent or worsening pain should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What sandals are best for hiking or water activities?

The KEEN Newport H2 and KEEN Whisper offer protected toes and water-ready designs. The Chaco Z/Cloud 2, Teva Original Universal, and Teva Tirra are also useful for appropriate outdoor or water-related activities. For demanding, extended hikes, a supportive closed shoe may be more appropriate.

How should comfortable sandals fit?

Your toes should have room without hanging over the front, the heel should remain centered, and straps should hold the foot without pinching. You should not need to grip the footbed with your toes. Try sandals later in the day, when feet may be more swollen, and walk for several minutes before deciding.

The Bottom Line

For most everyday wear, start with the Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed. Choose the Chaco Z/1 Classic when secure walking matters, the Teva Original Universal when value and water-friendly versatility matter, and the KEEN Newport H2 or KEEN Whisper when toe protection is important. Whatever the model, verify the exact variant and return policy, break it in gradually, and do not treat a sandal as a substitute for clinical care or a supportive sneaker on demanding trips.
