Keep gratitude separate from an immediate sales pitch. Use email or SMS for digital confirmation, and handwritten or printed notes when the message travels with the parcel.
The examples below can be adapted for order confirmations, shipping acknowledgements, package inserts and personal follow-ups. Replace a placeholder only with information your store actually has.

What a purchase thank-you message should accomplish
A thank-you message is more than a polite sign-off. It reassures the buyer that the order was received, sets expectations about what happens next and gives them a straightforward way to get help. The wording should sound like a person addressing a customer, not like an advertisement interrupting a transaction.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- State the thanks plainly. “Thank you for your order” is clearer than a vague slogan.
- Make it specific. Use the customer’s name or purchased item when that information is available and appropriate.
- Match the channel to the moment. An order-confirmation email can carry details; a text message should stay short; a note in a parcel can feel more personal.
- Offer a useful next step. Point to shipping updates, setup or care instructions, or a support contact when the customer may need it.
- Protect the tone. Gratitude should remain the main purpose even if a later message contains a survey, discount or recommendation.
A five-part framework for writing the note
Use this sequence when drafting from scratch. It works for a one-line confirmation as well as a longer personal email.
#1 Best Overall
- Greeting: Address the customer by name if your system has a reliable name field. Otherwise use a neutral greeting rather than guessing.
- Specific thanks: Say that you appreciate the order or the customer’s support.
- Relevant detail: Mention the product, category, first purchase or repeat purchase when it adds warmth or clarity.
- Next step or support: Include an order link, delivery update, instructions or a direct support route only when it is useful at that point.
- Sign-off: End with the store name or a real sender so the message feels accountable.
When the note is also an order confirmation
Put the thank-you beside the practical information rather than hiding the confirmation below promotional content. A useful confirmation can include the order number, a concise order summary, what happens next, an expected delivery date or shipping update when available, tracking instructions and a clear way to contact support. The exact details depend on your fulfillment setup; do not promise a date or tracking event that your system cannot verify.

Choose the right format for the moment
There is no established controlled evidence in the available guidance that one format reliably produces better retention or conversion than another. Compare the personal feel you want, the information the customer needs immediately and the effort your order volume allows.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
| Format | Best use | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Order-confirmation email | Confirm the order and give order, product, shipping and support details. | Keep transactional information prominent. |
| SMS | A short acknowledgement or update where the store uses customer messaging. | The guidance identifies SMS as an option but does not establish consent rules or jurisdiction-specific requirements. |
| Handwritten note | A personal touch for a manageable number of orders. | Handwriting is practical when monthly order volume is limited. |
| Printed package insert | A consistent note delivered with the product. | Prepare it with order packaging; cards or note stationery are optional. |
| Follow-up email | Product-use help, delivery follow-up, a survey or a later offer. | Treat it as a separate post-purchase touchpoint instead of crowding the initial thank-you. |
Build a simple post-purchase sequence
Customers may receive several messages after paying. Give each one a single job so the initial expression of thanks does not get buried.
- Immediate confirmation: Acknowledge the purchase and show the order number or summary. Include a status link and support path when available.
- Shipping update: Send the dispatch and tracking information when the order actually leaves your facility. Do not imply shipment before that event occurs.
- Product help: After delivery, provide setup, care or usage guidance if the item needs it.
- Experience check: Ask for feedback or a survey in a later message, after the customer has had a fair chance to receive and use the product.
- Optional promotion: A discount, newsletter invitation or related offer belongs in a later communication when it fits your policies and the customer’s expectations.
Where the checkout thank-you page fits
Shopify’s official developer documentation describes the Thank you page as an initial purchase confirmation shown after checkout, while later visits show the Order status page. The documentation also says the page can be customized through checkout UI extensions. That distinction helps you keep the immediate confirmation focused and move ongoing tracking or assistance to the status experience.

Personalize without overstepping
- Use only data your store collected accurately and is permitted to use. A wrong name or item reference makes an automated note feel careless.
- Choose one or two relevant details rather than repeating the entire cart in conversational copy.
- Match the customer’s context: a gift buyer may appreciate a gift-focused line, while a repeat consumable purchase can be acknowledged directly.
- Keep sensitive information out of casual copy. Order numbers and secure status links are preferable to displaying unnecessary personal details.
- Let the sender’s voice match the business. Adapt a template instead of pasting it unchanged.
Adding discounts, reviews and cross-sells responsibly
A promotion can be useful, but it should not replace the thanks. If you include a discount code, review request, newsletter invitation or cross-sell, make the gratitude unmistakable and explain the offer plainly. Put the commercial element after the confirmation and support information, not before it.
Communication rules vary by jurisdiction, channel and customer relationship. The available guidance does not establish legal requirements for any specific country, so check the rules that apply to your business before adding marketing content to email or SMS. In particular, confirm that your messaging process has the necessary permission and an appropriate way for customers to manage promotional communication.
Implement the approach at your order volume
Low monthly volume
Write a short personal note by hand for orders where the extra effort is manageable. Keep a small set of approved phrases nearby, then add the customer’s name and item only after checking the packing slip. Use a separate automated email for the formal order record if handwriting cannot carry delivery or support details.
Growing volume
Use a printed insert with a stable thank-you line and a support contact, while reserving handwritten additions for special orders or gifts. Create one confirmation template with conditional fields for the order number, status link and expected delivery information. Test that every field appears correctly before enabling it for all orders.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Higher volume or complex fulfillment
Automate the transactional confirmation and shipping updates, then maintain a distinct product-help or survey message. Set rules for when tracking becomes available, when a delivery estimate changes and which support address receives replies. Review a sample of sent messages regularly so a broken variable or outdated instruction does not reach every customer.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Turning thanks into a sales pitch: Move the offer to a later message and give the confirmation priority.
- Sending a generic sentence with no context: Add the customer’s name, item or order status when the data is reliable.
- Omitting help information: Include a support email, reply instruction or help link for products that may raise questions.
- Overloading an SMS: Keep the text to acknowledgement and the next update; put full details in email or the order-status page.
- Promising delivery too early: Use an expected date only when your fulfillment system supports it, and send tracking after dispatch.
- Repeating every message: Separate confirmation, shipping, product guidance, feedback and promotion so each contact has a clear purpose.
- Using the wrong personalization: Verify names, products and links before sending, and provide a neutral fallback when a field is missing.
Final pre-send checklist
- Does the first sentence clearly thank the customer?
- Is the name or product reference accurate and genuinely useful?
- If this is a confirmation, are the order details and next step easy to find?
- Can the customer reach a real support route without searching?
- Does the channel suit the message length and urgency?
- Have promotional elements been separated from the core thanks and checked against applicable communication rules?
- Is the sign-off tied to a recognizable store or sender?
A strong thank-you message makes the customer feel acknowledged, confirms what they need to know and leaves selling for a more appropriate moment. Start with the simple warm version, add only the details that help, and choose a format your team can deliver consistently.
