Tesla really did halve the U.S. price of its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) subscription—from $199 to $99 per month—but that change happened in April 2024, not August 2026. As of the August 16, 2026 pricing snapshot, Tesla’s U.S. support page still listed the subscription at $99 per month for eligible vehicles. The larger recent change is Tesla’s move toward subscription-only access rather than an ordinary upfront purchase.
FSD (Supervised) is an advanced driver-assistance system, not an autonomous-driving service. The driver must remain attentive, monitor the vehicle and road, and be ready to take over immediately.

- Historical U.S. price cut: Tesla reduced FSD (Supervised) from $199 to $99 per month in April 2024, a reduction of $100, or approximately 50.3%. Engadget reported the 2024 change.
- Price shown in the 2026 snapshot: Tesla’s U.S. support page listed FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month for eligible vehicles. Prices can change and are not universal across markets.
- What you are buying: Temporary access to Tesla’s supervised driver-assistance features—not a self-driving car.
- Long-term cost: $1,188 for 12 months, $2,376 for two years, or $3,564 for three years, before taxes and any price changes.
- Availability: Your vehicle, FSD computer, software version, account, country and regulatory environment all matter.
What FSD (Supervised) provides
Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as a suite of advanced driver-assistance functions. Depending on the vehicle, software version and market, the feature set may include:
- Navigation-assisted driving and route following
- Automated lane changes
- Driving assistance on city streets
- Traffic-light and stop-sign handling
- Parking functions
- Summon-related functions where supported
- Highway driving assistance
That list is not a guarantee that every function will be available on every Tesla. Tesla says feature availability can vary according to vehicle hardware, software, geography and regulatory approval. Check the company’s Autopilot and FSD documentation for the features supported by your vehicle and region.

“Supervised” is the critical word
FSD’s name does not make the vehicle autonomous. You remain responsible for driving. Tesla requires the driver to stay attentive, monitor the vehicle’s behavior and be prepared to intervene immediately. The system can make mistakes, misinterpret situations or require a takeover in complex traffic, poor weather or other conditions.
Do not treat the subscription as permission for hands-off or eyes-off driving. Tesla’s investor materials explicitly state that active driver supervision is required and that the system does not make the vehicle autonomous. See Tesla’s 2026 filing.
Who is eligible for the $99 subscription?
You generally need all of the following:
- An eligible Tesla vehicle
- FSD Computer 3.0 or newer, according to Tesla’s current subscription documentation
- A Tesla account and vehicle that display the subscription option
- Availability of FSD (Supervised) in your market
Tesla’s support page has listed markets including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Lithuania and Estonia. That list and the approved feature set are subject to change, so international owners should check their local Tesla page rather than assume the U.S. price or feature set applies.
For a used Tesla, check the exact vehicle’s hardware, software and account status. A previous owner’s purchase or subscription should not be assumed to transfer with the car or follow you to another Tesla. Review Tesla’s current FSD transfer policy before buying or selling.

How to subscribe
For an existing vehicle, Tesla’s documented app path is:
- Open the Tesla app.
- Tap Upgrades.
- Tap Software Upgrades.
- Select the FSD subscription option if it appears.
- Tap the subscribe or add control and confirm payment.
Tesla also says the subscription may be purchased through the vehicle touchscreen. App labels can change after software updates, but the account screen is the decisive check: if the offer does not appear, your vehicle, market or account may not currently qualify.
How to cancel—and when access ends
Tesla says subscribers can cancel through the app:
- Open the Tesla app.
- Go to Upgrades.
- Select Manage.
- Select Full Self-Driving (Supervised).
- Tap Cancel Subscription.
Cancellation does not normally produce a prorated refund. Access continues through the paid billing period, so cancel before the next renewal date if you want to avoid another monthly charge. Keep confirmation of the cancellation for your records.

How much does $99 per month really cost?

These figures exclude taxes and assume the price remains unchanged. They are useful for budgeting, but they are not necessarily a current buy-versus-subscribe comparison. Tesla’s 2026 filing describes a transition toward monthly subscriptions while sunsetting the ordinary upfront-payment route in the United States and Canada. TechCrunch reported on that transition; Tesla’s filing is the primary source.

Could some owners pay less?
Possibly. Tesla’s pricing can depend on an existing software package. Some reporting has described a $49-per-month FSD rate for certain owners who previously purchased Enhanced Autopilot in the U.S. or Canada. That is not a universal EAP-owner benefit. Tesla’s regional documentation also indicates that a vehicle’s existing package can affect the subscription price.
Check the offer displayed in your own Tesla app or vehicle. Do not budget on $49 unless that price is actually shown for your account. See Tesla’s regional subscription documentation and the reported EAP-owner pricing exception.
Is Tesla FSD worth $99 a month?
There is no universal answer because the value depends on how often you drive, where you drive and which functions your Tesla can use.

- Want to test FSD without making a large long-term commitment
- Drive frequently enough to use the system regularly
- Have a long road trip or temporary period of heavier driving ahead
- Lease or change vehicles relatively often
- Live in a supported market and have confirmed the features you want
- Understand and accept the ongoing supervision requirement
It may be poor value if you:
- Mostly make short local trips
- Drive in a market where important features are unavailable or restricted
- Dislike recurring software charges
- Expect autonomous, hands-off operation
- Own a vehicle that lacks the required hardware
- Are uncomfortable supervising an imperfect system in difficult traffic
The subscription lowers the upfront commitment, but continuous use adds up quickly. At $99 per month, three years costs $3,564 before taxes. Conversely, subscribing only for a road trip or a few months can be more financially sensible than paying for access year-round—provided your vehicle and account qualify.

Tesla versus Rivian Autonomy+ and Ford BlueCruise
These products should not be compared by monthly price alone. Their operating domains, hardware requirements and feature availability differ.

Rivian lists a 60-day trial for new R1S and R1T deliveries and describes Autonomy+ features such as hands-free driving, lane changes and parking functions subject to rollout and vehicle support. Details are available on Rivian’s Autonomy+ page.
Ford BlueCruise is a narrower highway product. Ford says hands-free operation is limited to designated Blue Zones, and eligible vehicles require the driver to remain attentive. Ford lists monthly, annual and one-time pricing on its BlueCruise page. Neither system is a drop-in alternative for a Tesla owner: each requires a compatible vehicle.

Common surprises before subscribing
The offer is missing from the app
The vehicle may lack the required FSD computer, the market may not support the subscription, the account may not be eligible, or the vehicle may need an applicable software update. Check the vehicle’s software and account screens, then contact Tesla if the eligibility information appears inconsistent.

The displayed price is different
Possible explanations include currency, taxes, country, an existing Enhanced Autopilot package or an account-specific offer. Use the price shown at checkout—not a headline from another market—as your budget figure.
A feature shown in a review is unavailable
Reviews may cover a different software release, hardware generation or regulatory market. Verify the feature in Tesla’s current documentation and your vehicle’s own release notes or account screen.
You sell the vehicle
Do not assume the subscription, unused payments or a purchased entitlement transfers to another car. Review Tesla’s current transfer rules for the specific sale or vehicle transaction.
