Short answer: Tesla makes most of its money selling electric vehicles and related automotive services, with a growing second business in batteries and energy systems. SpaceX generates revenue mainly from Starlink connectivity and from rocket-launch and space-development services. They are separate companies, not a combined business: their main connection is shared leadership under Elon Musk, occasional dealings between affiliated entities, and overlapping capabilities in engineering, software, energy, communications and advanced manufacturing.
The businesses at a glance
Tesla and SpaceX are often discussed together because of Elon Musk, but their customers, products, revenue cycles and financial disclosures are very different. Tesla sells physical products and services directly to consumers, businesses and energy operators. SpaceX sells access to communications infrastructure and launch capability, with customers ranging from households to enterprises and government agencies.

| SpaceX | Space; Connectivity | $15.473 billion combined segment revenue | Consumers, enterprises, mobile operators and governments | Recurring connectivity subscriptions plus launch and development contracts |
The totals above are simple additions of the segment figures reported in the companies’ 2025 materials. They are useful for scale, but they are not a measure of ownership, valuation or profit, and the companies do not publish a combined set of accounts.
How Tesla makes money
Automotive is the core business
Tesla reported $82.056 billion in 2025 automotive-segment revenue. Its 2025 Form 10-K defines the segment broadly: it covers the design, development, manufacturing, sales and leasing of electric vehicles, plus automotive regulatory credits and related services.

That definition means a Tesla vehicle sale is only one part of automotive revenue. The segment also includes:
- Vehicle leasing and financing-related activity
- Sales of regulatory credits to other automakers
- Used-vehicle sales
- Maintenance, collision repair and parts
- Paid Supercharging
- Insurance
- Merchandise and other automotive services
Vehicle deliveries remain the economic foundation: Tesla manufactures cars, sells them through its distribution and delivery network, and earns additional revenue as those vehicles are financed, serviced, charged and insured. Leasing can spread revenue over the lease period rather than producing the same timing as an outright sale. Regulatory-credit revenue is different again: it comes from selling compliance credits generated by Tesla’s zero-emission vehicle production to manufacturers that need them under applicable rules.
The mix matters when evaluating Tesla. A dollar of vehicle revenue is tied to production volume, pricing, incentives, shipping and factory utilization. Service, charging and insurance revenue is linked to the installed vehicle fleet. Credit revenue depends on environmental regulations and the credit needs of other manufacturers, so it should not automatically be treated as a permanent, vehicle-like subscription.
Energy generation and storage is the second reportable segment
Tesla reported $12.771 billion in 2025 energy-generation-and-storage revenue, equal to roughly 13.5% of the two reported segment totals. The filing describes this segment as the design, manufacture, installation, sales and leasing of energy-generation and storage products, along with financing, related services and energy-generation incentives.
The segment includes large-scale battery systems such as Megapack and residential products such as Powerwall, as well as the associated installation and services. Tesla said energy-generation-and-storage revenue increased 27% in 2025, primarily because of higher Megapack and Powerwall deployments.
Energy revenue therefore combines several business models:
- Utility and commercial projects: large battery installations are sold and deployed for grid operators, renewable-energy developers and commercial customers.
- Residential storage: Powerwall systems are sold with installation and related support.
- Generation products and incentives: the segment also captures generation equipment, leasing and eligible incentives.
Large battery projects can create substantial revenue when equipment is delivered and installed, but project timing can make quarterly results uneven. A growing installed base can also lead to continuing service and software opportunities, although the 2025 figures supplied here do not break out those recurring components.

How SpaceX makes money
The Space segment sells launch and development work
SpaceX reported $4.086 billion in 2025 Space-segment revenue. This segment covers launch services and launch-and-development work, including contracts that pay SpaceX to place payloads into orbit or to perform related development activities.
Launch revenue is contract-based and depends on mission schedules, payload readiness, regulatory approvals, vehicle availability and the terms of government and commercial agreements. SpaceX said launch-and-development growth was driven in part by an extended NASA Cargo Resupply Services contract and a U.S. government contract.
Operational volume also increased: Falcon launches rose from 134 in 2024 to 165 in 2025, according to SpaceX’s reported materials. More launches can increase revenue capacity, but launch count by itself does not reveal the price, margin or customer mix of each mission. A government development award, a cargo resupply mission and a commercial launch can have very different economics.
The Space segment is not limited to a simple “rocket ticket.” Development work can involve engineering, mission integration and other services required to make a launch system or spacecraft program operational. That makes the segment partly industrial and partly services-based, with revenue recognized according to contract performance and delivery terms.
Connectivity, led by Starlink, is SpaceX’s larger segment
SpaceX reported $11.387 billion in 2025 Connectivity revenue, about 73.6% of its combined reported segment revenue. The segment is centered on Starlink, a satellite-connectivity network that sells internet and related connectivity services.
SpaceX identifies four major sources of connectivity demand:
- Consumer subscribers: households and individuals pay for service and typically acquire or lease the required customer equipment.
- Enterprise connectivity: businesses use the network for primary or backup connectivity, remote operations and distributed sites.
- Mobile connectivity: connectivity services can support transportation and mobile-network use cases.
- Government connectivity: public-sector customers purchase resilient communications capacity and related services.
Connectivity produced $4.423 billion in operating income in 2025, a figure that distinguishes it from the Space segment’s revenue-only figure in the supplied disclosure. The result illustrates why subscriptions can change the financial profile of a space company: once the network is operating, additional subscribers can contribute recurring revenue without requiring a new rocket launch for each billing period. That does not make the business asset-light; satellites, ground infrastructure, spectrum access, customer terminals and network upgrades require continuing investment.

SpaceX said consumer-subscriber revenue growth reflected 99.9% growth in Starlink subscribers, partly offset by an 11.2% decline in subscriber average revenue per user. The filing attributes the lower average revenue per user in part to international expansion, which added lower-priced plans. In other words, the subscriber base expanded dramatically while the average amount collected per subscriber fell as the service entered more price-sensitive markets.

Revenue scale and mix: Tesla is larger in 2025 reported revenue
| Measure | Tesla | SpaceX |
|---|---|---|
| Larger reported segment | Automotive: $82.056 billion | Connectivity: $11.387 billion |
| Second reported segment | Energy generation and storage: $12.771 billion | Space: $4.086 billion |
| Combined reported segment revenue | $94.827 billion | $15.473 billion |
| Approximate share of combined revenue from larger segment | Automotive: 86.5% | Connectivity: 73.6% |
| Reported operating-income detail | Segment gross-profit information is reported, but no comparable amount is included in the figures available here | Connectivity operating income: $4.423 billion |
On the reported 2025 figures, Tesla generated the larger revenue total by a wide margin. That answer is strictly about reported segment revenue. It is not a comparison of market capitalization, enterprise value, cash flow, valuation, or overall profitability. SpaceX’s disclosure is a prospectus-style company filing, while Tesla’s figures come from its Form 10-K, so the presentation and level of detail are not identical.
Recurring subscriptions versus product and project sales
Tesla’s revenue starts with products and expands through the installed base
Tesla’s automotive economics begin with a manufactured vehicle. Revenue is recognized when vehicles and related services are delivered under the applicable accounting rules, with leasing and other arrangements producing different timing. The energy business also begins with hardware: a Powerwall, Megapack or generation product is manufactured, sold, leased or installed.
After a vehicle or energy system is deployed, Tesla can continue to earn from charging, maintenance, repairs, insurance, parts, software-enabled features and other services. Those follow-on streams can be more repeatable than a one-time equipment sale, but the supplied 2025 segment figures do not separate their individual contributions.
SpaceX combines contract revenue with subscriptions
SpaceX’s launch business is project-oriented. Each mission involves a customer, payload, launch window and contract milestones. Revenue can be lumpy because a delayed mission may shift recognition between periods, while a government development award may follow its own schedule.

Starlink adds a subscription layer. Monthly connectivity payments can recur across a growing customer base, and the same network can serve households, companies, mobile users and government agencies. However, subscriptions still depend on continued network investment, customer equipment, local licensing and pricing decisions. The reported 11.2% decline in average revenue per user shows that subscriber growth and revenue per customer can move in opposite directions.
Customers: consumers, enterprises and governments
| Customer group | Tesla examples | SpaceX examples |
|---|---|---|
| Consumers | Electric vehicles, charging, insurance, Powerwall and related services | Starlink residential connectivity and customer equipment |
| Businesses | Fleet vehicles, commercial charging and energy storage | Enterprise connectivity, launch services and mission integration |
| Utilities and infrastructure operators | Megapack and other large-scale storage deployments | Satellite-network and ground-infrastructure users |
| Governments | Indirect influence through vehicle and energy regulations and incentives | Launch, cargo-resupply, development and government-connectivity contracts |
Tesla is therefore more exposed to consumer financing conditions, vehicle affordability, factory output and competition in the auto market. SpaceX has consumer exposure through Starlink, but its launch and government-connectivity work adds enterprise and public-sector counterparties. Neither customer mix is risk-free: households can cancel or defer purchases, businesses can delay projects, and government programs can change scope or timing.

Capital intensity, engineering and research
Both companies require large, sustained investment, but the assets are different. Tesla invests in vehicle factories, battery production, charging infrastructure, energy-manufacturing capacity, software and service networks. SpaceX invests in launch vehicles, spacecraft, launch sites, satellite production, ground systems and network operations.
The accounting consequences also differ. A vehicle factory produces units that can be sold repeatedly; a launch system and satellite network are infrastructure intended to support many missions or subscribers. Tesla’s energy projects may be delivered in large batches, while SpaceX’s launch cadence and satellite deployment schedule affect when capacity becomes available.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Regulation and government dependence
Tesla depends on automotive and energy rules
Tesla’s regulatory-credit revenue exists because emissions and zero-emission vehicle rules create compliance markets. Vehicle safety, autonomous-driving rules, battery transport, electricity-market rules, building permits and energy incentives also influence its products and costs. The energy segment includes sales of energy-generation incentives, so policy can affect both demand and reported revenue.
Regulation is not the same as a government customer. Tesla generally sells vehicles and energy systems to private buyers, businesses and utilities, while government rules shape what products qualify for credits or incentives and how they may be sold and operated.
SpaceX sells directly into government programs
SpaceX’s launch and development revenue includes government work. The 2025 disclosure specifically cites an extended NASA Cargo Resupply Services contract and a U.S. government contract as contributors to growth. Government contracts can provide scale and credibility, but they also bring procurement rules, mission requirements, audits, budget cycles and political risk.

Where Tesla and SpaceX overlap
Shared leadership is the clearest connection
Elon Musk is the central governance link. Tesla’s official biography states: “Elon has also served as Chief Executive Officer, Chief Technology Officer and Chairman of Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, an advanced rocket and spacecraft manufacturing and services company (“SpaceX ”), since May 2002.”
That common leader can influence strategic priorities, recruiting, engineering culture and public communications, but it does not turn the companies into one legal entity. Tesla and SpaceX have separate corporate structures, products, customers, financial statements and boards or governance processes.
Affiliated-company dealings can occur
Tesla’s 2025 filing says it periodically does business with entities affiliated with its chief executive and directors, including SpaceX, under Tesla’s Related Person Transactions Policy. The cited note does not quantify a material 2025 Tesla–SpaceX transaction. Accordingly, the filing supports the existence of possible affiliated-company dealings, not a claim that Tesla routinely buys SpaceX hardware, that SpaceX is a Tesla supplier, or that the companies share revenue.
Recommended Free Tools
Capabilities are adjacent, not identical
The companies work in different end markets, yet several technical capabilities sit next to each other:
- Advanced manufacturing: both need repeatable production of complex hardware and tight quality control.
- Software and data: vehicles, batteries, satellites and ground networks depend on software for monitoring, control and customer features.
- Energy systems: Tesla sells batteries and energy infrastructure; SpaceX requires power systems for launch, spacecraft and communications operations.
- Communications: Tesla vehicles and energy products use connectivity, while SpaceX sells connectivity as a primary product through Starlink.
- Aerospace infrastructure: SpaceX is directly involved in rockets, spacecraft and launch sites; Tesla’s role is adjacent through manufacturing, batteries and software rather than orbital launch.
These overlaps describe compatible capabilities, not proof of shared technology, cost savings or operational integration. No authoritative published figure in the supplied material measures total Tesla–SpaceX synergies.
Does Tesla own SpaceX?
No. Tesla does not own SpaceX, and SpaceX does not own Tesla. They are separate companies. Elon Musk’s leadership role in both and any transactions with affiliated entities should not be confused with a parent-subsidiary relationship, a merger or a combined reporting group.
Because SpaceX is not presented as a Tesla subsidiary in Tesla’s 2025 filing, Tesla shareholders should not treat SpaceX’s revenue, Starlink operating income or launch assets as Tesla revenue or assets. Likewise, SpaceX’s reported figures do not include Tesla’s automotive or energy sales.
Which company makes more money?
Using the reported 2025 segment figures, Tesla makes more revenue: $94.827 billion across automotive and energy generation and storage, versus $15.473 billion across Space and Connectivity for SpaceX. Tesla’s automotive segment alone, at $82.056 billion, is larger than SpaceX’s two reported segments combined.
The answer changes if “makes more money” means profit, cash flow or return on capital. The supplied SpaceX disclosure reports $4.423 billion of Connectivity operating income, but no comparable Space-segment operating income is provided. Tesla’s filing reports segment gross-profit information, yet the specific comparable amounts are not included in the available figures. A fair profit comparison therefore cannot be calculated from these disclosures alone.
What to watch when comparing the companies
- Tesla automotive mix: vehicle volume, pricing, leasing, regulatory credits and the growth of paid services.
- Tesla energy execution: Megapack and Powerwall deployments, project timing and the durability of the 27% 2025 segment growth rate.
- SpaceX launch cadence: whether the increase from 134 to 165 Falcon launches continues and how contract mix affects revenue.
- Starlink economics: subscriber additions, average revenue per user, customer-equipment costs and network capacity.
- Government exposure: NASA, U.S. government and other public-sector awards, including renewal and budget risk.
- Capital requirements: factory, battery, satellite, launch-site and network investments needed to support future growth.
- Governance and related parties: any disclosed transactions involving affiliated entities, their terms and their materiality.
The cleanest conclusion is that Tesla is a diversified electric-vehicle and energy company whose revenue is still dominated by automotive sales, while SpaceX is a launch-and-connectivity company whose 2025 revenue is dominated by Starlink. Their shared leader and neighboring technologies create strategic proximity, but not shared ownership or a combined financial statement.
