Term vs. Permanent Life Insurance: Which Is Easier to Keep in Force?

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

Neither type is automatically easier for everyone. Term life insurance is usually easier to keep during its guaranteed level-premium period when the scheduled payment fits your budget, but it is designed to end after a stated term and renewal can become expensive or unavailable. Permanent insurance is designed for long-term or lifetime protection, yet keeping it active depends on the policy’s premium schedule, charges, cash value and, for some policies, investment performance.

The practical question is not simply “term or permanent?” Compare the policy you are considering—or already own—on five points: what you must pay now and later, which values are guaranteed, how renewal or lifetime coverage works, what happens after a missed payment, and whether the policy can remain funded under unfavorable assumptions.

What “easier to keep in force” actually means

An insurance policy stays in force while its contractual requirements are met and the insurer has not terminated coverage. For this comparison, “easier” has several separate meanings:

  • Payment predictability: Can you tell what you will owe and when?
  • Affordability over time: Is the payment likely to remain manageable as your income, expenses and age change?
  • Duration: Will coverage end at a stated date, or is it intended to continue for life?
  • Funding flexibility: Can you adjust payments without putting the policy at risk?
  • Failure tolerance: If a payment is missed or cash value performs poorly, what protection or options remain?

A policy that is easy to pay this year can still become difficult later. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) advises reviewing future premium exposure, requesting an illustration of values and benefits, and separating guaranteed values from nonguaranteed assumptions. Your issued contract and the law in your state control the details.

Term and permanent insurance at a glance

Axis Term life insurance Permanent life insurance
Intended duration A chosen policy term; future renewal or a new application may be needed Designed for long-term or lifetime coverage, subject to policy funding and terms
Premium pattern Often lower in early durations; level only for the period specified in the policy; renewal can cost more Whole life typically follows a set schedule; universal life permits flexibility but payments must cover insurance costs
Lapse or maintenance pressure Ability to pay scheduled premiums and the availability and price of renewal Ability to sustain required premiums or keep enough policy value to meet ongoing charges
Cash value and nonforfeiture Generally no cash value Cash value may provide options, but it is affected by costs, withdrawals, guarantees and, in variable policies, investment performance
Most important review Term end date, renewal premium schedule, maximum renewal age and conversion right Guaranteed premium and value schedule, required funding, charges, illustration assumptions and nonforfeiture options

The table does not rank the products. A low premium can make term easier for one household, while a fixed whole-life schedule can be more manageable for another. The actual policy and your ability to fund it determine the result.

How term life insurance stays in force

Level premiums apply only for the period stated

Term insurance covers a limited period, such as a specified number of years. It generally costs less than cash-value insurance during the early policy years because it normally provides a death benefit without building cash value. “Level premium” means the policy specifies a level amount for a defined period; it does not promise that the amount will stay level forever.

Keeping a term policy active during that level period is comparatively straightforward: pay each scheduled premium by its due date, observe the contract’s grace-period rules, and keep the policy within its stated term. The main affordability risk is that your need for coverage may outlast the initial period.

Renewal can preserve coverage but change the economics

Many term policies offer renewal, sometimes even after your health has changed. That right is valuable because a new application could require fresh underwriting. However, renewal premiums can rise substantially, and the contract may stop allowing renewal at a specified age. Before buying, request the actual renewal premium schedule and the maximum renewal age; do not infer either from the initial payment.

A nonrenewable policy requires a new application if you want coverage after the term ends. Your health, age and other underwriting factors can then affect eligibility and price. If the term is ending while you still need protection, waiting until the last moment can leave fewer choices.

Conversion may avoid new medical underwriting, but the price changes

Some term contracts allow conversion to a cash-value policy during a stated conversion period. Conversion can be useful if your health has changed or you want longer-duration coverage without applying for a new policy. The converted policy generally has a higher premium than the original term coverage. Check the deadline, eligible permanent products, age limits and how the insurer calculates the new premium.

How permanent life insurance stays in force

“Permanent” describes the intended duration, not one uniform payment system. Whole life, universal life and variable universal life have different maintenance risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whole life: scheduled premiums and contractual values

Whole life generally provides fixed coverage intended to last for the insured’s life, cash-value accumulation and a scheduled premium pattern for ordinary policies. The predictable schedule can make budgeting easier than a policy whose required funding changes with performance or charges.

State laws require whole-life policies to include nonforfeiture values if the policy ends because of missed payments or surrender. Depending on the contract, those values may provide cash or another insurance option. They are not a promise that the original full death benefit continues after nonpayment. Read the policy to see which option applies, how much value is available and whether selecting it changes the amount or duration of coverage.

Whole life can still become unaffordable if its scheduled premium is too high for your household. A fixed amount is predictable, but predictability does not make an amount affordable.

Universal life: flexible payments with a funding condition

Universal life lets you adjust the amount and timing of premiums within contractual limits. That flexibility can help when income varies, but it is conditional: the policy remains active only while its cash value is sufficient to pay ongoing insurance costs and other charges.

“In a universal life policy, you can choose a flexible premium payment pattern as long as you pay enough to keep your policy in force.”

NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide, 2026

A skipped payment is therefore not automatically harmless. A policy may use existing value to cover charges, reducing the cushion available for future costs. Ask the insurer for the guaranteed minimum funding requirements, current charges, surrender charges, the policy’s current status and an illustration showing what happens if you pay less than planned.

Variable universal life: market performance can affect durability

Variable universal life combines flexible-premium mechanics with investment-based separate accounts. Returns are not guaranteed and cash value can decline with market performance. Because insurance charges are deducted from policy value, a sustained decline or inadequate contributions can reduce the policy’s ability to cover those charges.

Do not judge a variable policy by a favorable illustration alone. Review guaranteed values separately from assumed investment returns, identify the expenses deducted from the account, and ask what premium would be needed under adverse assumptions. The insurer can provide the current account value, charges and in-force status.

Which type may be easier in common situations?

You need a large death benefit while keeping current costs low

Term is often easier to maintain during its initial level-premium period because the early premium is generally lower. This can leave more room in the household budget for housing, debt repayment, emergency savings or other obligations. The trade-off is that renewal may cost more later, may end at an age limit, and may require a new application if the contract is nonrenewable.

You need coverage intended to last for life

A permanent policy is designed for long-term or lifetime protection, so it may avoid the need to requalify at the end of a term. The maintenance question shifts to funding: can you sustain the scheduled whole-life premium, or will a universal policy retain enough value to pay its charges? A policy can be “permanent” in design yet lapse if it is not adequately funded.

Your income is irregular

Universal life offers payment flexibility that a strictly scheduled policy may not. That feature helps only when the policy’s value and charges are monitored. A contribution pattern that works under current assumptions can fail if charges rise, contributions fall or investment performance is weaker than illustrated.

Your health has changed since the policy began

A renewable term provision or a conversion right may be more valuable than the lowest current premium because it can preserve access without a new medical application, subject to the contract’s rules. Do not surrender existing coverage before replacement coverage is issued; a new application can be declined or priced higher after a health change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want to avoid investment-related funding risk

A policy with a guaranteed premium and value schedule may be easier to monitor than one whose cash value depends on market performance. That does not make every whole-life policy affordable, and it does not eliminate the need to pay scheduled premiums. Compare the guarantees and actual charges rather than relying on the product label.

A step-by-step test for a real policy

Use the policy contract, latest annual statement and current in-force illustration. If you are shopping, request these figures in writing before applying or replacing coverage.

  1. Write down the payment obligation. Record the premium amount, due dates, payment frequency and whether the amount is guaranteed, scheduled to change or dependent on policy value.
  2. Map the future exposure. For term, list the end of the level period, each renewal premium and the maximum renewal age. For permanent coverage, list scheduled premiums, planned flexible payments and the ages or dates at which charges are projected to exceed value.
  3. Separate guarantees from assumptions. Ask for both guaranteed and current or illustrated values. Treat assumed dividends, interest or investment returns as scenarios, not promises.
  4. Identify every charge. Review insurance costs, administrative fees, surrender charges, loan interest and any investment-account expenses. In universal policies, determine how each charge is deducted from value.
  5. Check the failure path. Find the grace-period length, what happens to the death benefit during that period, when the policy is considered lapsed, and whether reinstatement is available and under what conditions.
  6. Review cash-value choices. For whole life, identify nonforfeiture options. For universal or variable policies, examine how withdrawals or loans reduce value, increase the risk of lapse or affect the death benefit.
  7. Stress-test the funding plan. Ask the insurer to illustrate lower contributions, higher charges, lower interest or unfavorable investment performance. Note the date at which the policy would become unsustainable under each scenario.
  8. Match the schedule to your household. Compare the required payment with income that is dependable, not a temporary bonus or optimistic investment return. Include likely changes such as retirement, a mortgage payoff or loss of employer benefits.

What happens after a missed premium?

Grace period

A grace period can keep coverage active briefly after a premium is missed, but the exact length and effect depend on the issued contract and applicable state law. NAIC model language published in 2025 provides a 31-day period for a premium due after the first premium and states that death-benefit coverage continues during that period. Model language is not automatically the rule for every state or contract, so check your policy.

Lapse

The NAIC glossary defines lapse as “termination of a policy due to failure to pay the required renewal premium.” Once a policy has lapsed, the original death benefit is not automatically restored. A contract may offer reinstatement, often requiring overdue premiums, interest, evidence of insurability or other conditions. Ask the insurer for the deadline and exact requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nonforfeiture and other options

Whole-life nonforfeiture provisions can provide a cash value or another insurance option after missed payments or surrender. The selected option may reduce the death benefit, shorten the coverage period or change the premium arrangement. Universal and variable policies can have their own contract-specific provisions; do not assume that cash value guarantees continued full coverage.

How to compare illustrations without being misled

An illustration may show current assumptions alongside guaranteed values. The guaranteed column is the relevant baseline for judging whether the policy can meet its promises under the contract. Current assumptions can be useful for understanding a possible outcome, but they can change.

  • Confirm the premium required to keep the policy in force under guaranteed assumptions.
  • Ask which interest, dividend or investment-return assumptions drive the nonguaranteed column.
  • Review the year-by-year cash value, surrender value, death benefit and policy charges.
  • For universal life, identify the minimum premium and the projected premium needed to avoid depletion of value.
  • For variable universal life, request scenarios showing lower investment performance and explain how withdrawals or loans alter the result.

Keep the illustration with the policy documents and compare each annual statement with the projection. A material difference is a reason to contact the insurer, not proof by itself that the policy is defective.

Replacing an existing policy safely

Replacement can create a gap in coverage or a higher cost. Health changes can affect eligibility and price for the new policy. Before cancelling an existing policy:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Obtain the proposed policy’s written premium schedule, guarantees, exclusions, renewal or conversion provisions and illustration.
  2. Ask the current insurer for an in-force illustration, surrender value, loan balance, outstanding charges and reinstatement terms.
  3. Compare the two policies side by side, including contestability or suicide provisions that may apply anew under the replacement contract.
  4. Complete the new application and wait for the insurer to issue the replacement policy.
  5. Verify that the new coverage is active, then follow the insurer’s replacement procedures before ending the old policy.

Do not cancel current coverage merely because a new application has been submitted. An application can be declined, delayed or issued with different terms.

Questions to ask an insurer or licensed adviser

  • What premium is guaranteed, and for how long?
  • What will the premium be at each renewal date, and when does renewal end?
  • Is conversion available, which products qualify, and what is the deadline?
  • For universal life, what is the guaranteed minimum premium and what charges are deducted from value?
  • What happens if I pay less than planned or skip a payment?
  • How much cash value and death benefit are guaranteed each year?
  • How do loans and withdrawals affect value, interest, taxes and lapse risk?
  • What are the grace-period, lapse and reinstatement provisions in this contract?
  • Which nonforfeiture options are available if a whole-life policy ends?
  • Can you provide a current illustration and a guaranteed illustration using the same assumptions?

Bottom line

Term is often the easier policy to keep in force while its level premium fits your budget and your coverage need fits the stated term. Permanent insurance can be easier when you need protection for life and can reliably sustain its scheduled premium or required funding. Whole life offers a set payment pattern and nonforfeiture values; universal life trades payment flexibility for the obligation to keep enough value to cover charges; variable universal life adds market-performance risk.

Choose based on the real premium schedule, guarantees, renewal or conversion rights, charges and failure provisions in the contract—not on the words “term” or “permanent” alone. For policy-specific questions, contact the insurer or your state insurance department.
