Yes. Amit Yoran, Tenable’s CEO and chairman, died unexpectedly on January 3, 2025, after battling cancer, according to Tenable. The company announced his death on January 4. Yoran had been on medical leave since December 5, 2024, and Tenable appointed CFO Stephen A. Vintz and COO Mark Thurmond as interim co-CEOs.

This is a retrospective account of a January 2025 event, not a new 2026 death announcement.

What Tenable announced

Tenable’s January 4, 2025 announcement said Yoran had died unexpectedly the previous day. A Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission independently records January 3 as the date of death: Tenable’s January 2025 filing. The filing was submitted on January 6.

Tenable said Yoran “had been battling cancer.” The company did not publish a more specific medical cause in those statements. Its announcement also said funeral arrangements had not been announced at that time, which describes the situation on January 4, 2025 rather than establishing what happened later.

The medical leave before his death

In a December 2024 Form 8-K, Tenable said Yoran had disclosed in April 2024 that he had been diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer. He later learned that he required additional treatment and began a temporary medical leave on December 5, 2024.

That filing does not identify the type or stage of cancer, the treatment involved, a hospital, or a location of death. The publicly documented description is therefore limited to Tenable’s statement that he was battling cancer and required additional treatment.

Timeline of the leadership transition

Date Event
April 2024 Yoran disclosed a treatable form of cancer, according to Tenable’s December filing.
December 5, 2024 He began a temporary medical leave. CFO Stephen A. Vintz and COO Mark Thurmond were appointed interim co-CEOs, with Vintz designated principal executive officer.
January 3, 2025 Yoran died, according to Tenable’s Form 8-K.
January 4, 2025 Tenable publicly announced his death. The company said Art Coviello would serve as chairman.
January 6, 2025 Tenable filed the Form 8-K documenting the death and interim executive appointments.

Vintz and Thurmond were interim leaders at the time of the transition; the filings do not by themselves establish that either was a permanent successor.

Who was Amit Yoran?

Yoran joined Tenable as CEO in 2016 and led the company through its 2018 initial public offering. Tenable’s corporate biography and investor-relations biography describe a career spanning government, security start-ups and major cybersecurity companies.

  • He founded Riptech, an early managed security services provider that was later acquired by Symantec.
  • He founded and led NetWitness.
  • He served as president of RSA.
  • At the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, he was the founding director of the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team program.
  • His listed education includes degrees from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and George Washington University.

Yoran’s significance to Tenable

Tenable credited Yoran with helping drive the company’s growth and 2018 IPO. During his tenure, the company broadened its positioning from vulnerability management toward exposure management. In plain terms, exposure management is the work of finding, prioritizing and reducing security weaknesses across an organization’s infrastructure, cloud environments and other parts of its attack surface.

Tenable described Yoran as a cybersecurity pioneer in its announcement. That is the company’s characterization; the documented facts are his executive roles, the businesses he founded or led, his government work, and his leadership of Tenable through its public listing.

Who led Tenable after his death?

Immediate arrangement

Immediately after the announcement, Vintz and Thurmond continued as interim co-CEOs. Vintz remained the principal executive officer, while Coviello took the chairman role, separating the board-chair and executive-leadership responsibilities that Yoran had held together.

Later structure documented in 2026

Tenable’s 2026 proxy statement says the company adopted and continued a co-CEO structure after Yoran’s death. In those proxy materials, Stephen A. Vintz and Mark Thurmond are identified as co-CEOs, and Matthew Brown as CFO. That is a dated description from the 2026 filing, not a claim that the leadership roster can never change.

What Tenable said about business performance

In its January 4 announcement, Tenable said preliminary results indicated that it expected to meet or exceed previously issued fourth-quarter and full-year 2024 guidance. This was management’s contemporaneous expectation, not evidence that the leadership change had no effect on the business. The cited company statements do not establish a stock-price reaction, a long-term financial outcome, or an operational crisis.

What remains unknown

  • The specific type or stage of cancer.
  • The details of Yoran’s treatment or final medical circumstances.
  • The hospital or location of his death.
  • Funeral arrangements beyond Tenable’s statement on January 4, 2025 that they had not been announced at that time.
  • Any market reaction or long-term business impact not documented in the cited company filings.

The reliable public record supports the date of death, Tenable’s description of cancer treatment, the medical-leave timeline and the interim and later leadership structures. It does not support more specific medical or personal claims.
