Technology companies had announced cuts affecting 45,363 roles worldwide between January 1 and March 11, 2026, according to a RationalFX compilation cited by Network World. Roughly 68% of the reported total was attributed to the United States.
That is a significant early-2026 snapshot, but it is not a government-certified unemployment figure, a count of completed terminations, or proof that artificial intelligence eliminated 45,363 jobs. It is a tally of publicly reported workforce reductions, assembled from company announcements, WARN filings and layoff trackers.

What “45,000 tech layoffs” actually means
The headline figure covers announced technology-sector job cuts from January 1 through March 11, 2026. It is global, although the underlying compilation attributed approximately two-thirds of the total to U.S.-based companies.
The count should be read as:
“RationalFX counted 45,363 announced global technology job cuts through March 11, 2026.”
It should not be read as 45,363 people becoming unemployed. Announcements may include planned reductions, voluntary departures, buyouts, internal transfers or affected roles that disappear over time. Companies can also revise their numbers or announce overlapping cuts in separate rounds.
The companies behind the early-2026 total
The largest named reductions in the March snapshot were distributed across e-commerce, fintech, telecommunications, semiconductors, software and consumer technology.
| Company or division | Reported affected roles | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Approximately 16,000 | Confirmed by Amazon; the largest named contributor |
| Block | Approximately 4,000 | Reported as about 40% of its workforce |
| ams OSRAM | Approximately 2,000 | Announced reduction |
| Ericsson | Approximately 1,900 | Includes a substantial Swedish component |
| ASML | Approximately 1,700 | Reported early-2026 workforce reduction |
| Meta Reality Labs | Approximately 1,500 | About 10% of Reality Labs, not Meta overall |
| Autodesk | About 1,000 | Approximate reported figure |
| Salesforce | About 1,000 | Approximate reported figure |
| Ocado | About 1,000 | Approximate reported figure |
| eBay | About 800 | Approximate reported figure |
| About 675 | Approximate reported figure |
These figures come from the Network World summary of RationalFX’s compilation; they are not all backed by identical types of company disclosure.
Amazon was the largest single contributor
Amazon said approximately 16,000 roles would be affected. The company described the move as an effort to reduce organizational layers, increase ownership and remove bureaucracy, while continuing to hire in strategic areas.
Most affected U.S.-based employees were offered 90 days to seek another internal position, according to Amazon’s announcement. That distinction matters: an affected role does not always mean an immediate departure from the company.
Rank #2
- Physical Condition: No Defects
- Great one for reading
- It's a great choice for a book person
Amazon’s approximately 16,000 roles represent about 35% of the reported 45,363 global total. Some coverage characterized Amazon as responsible for more than half of the cuts, but that statement does not match the listed figures unless it uses a narrower, unexplained denominator.
Why companies are cutting jobs while revenue remains strong
Early-2026 reductions show that strong financial performance does not guarantee stable headcount. A company can be growing and still decide that its previous staffing model is too expensive or inefficient.

Common reasons include:
- AI and automation: Companies may expect software systems to increase output per employee or reduce repetitive work.
- Fewer management layers: Organizations may remove duplicate leadership and coordination roles.
- Post-pandemic hiring corrections: Some employers expanded rapidly and later recalibrated staffing.
- Capital reallocation: Money may move from legacy products into data centers, chips, cloud services or AI infrastructure.
- Market and product changes: Slower demand, canceled products, regional exits or weaker business lines can trigger reductions.
- Margin pressure: Profitable companies may still cut costs to improve operating margins or satisfy investors.
Therefore, a layoff announcement at an AI-focused company does not necessarily mean the affected jobs were automated. The immediate cause may be consolidation, outsourcing, a canceled project or a change in corporate priorities.
How much of the reduction was caused by AI?
The available evidence supports describing AI as a major stated restructuring rationale, not as a proven cause of every cut.
There are several different situations that are often merged under the phrase “AI layoffs”:
| Category | What it means |
|---|---|
| Explicitly AI-linked | The company directly connects specific role reductions to automation or AI systems. |
| AI investment shift | The company cuts legacy or lower-priority roles while hiring for AI, cloud or infrastructure work. |
| AI-adjacent restructuring | AI is cited alongside efficiency, management consolidation or cost reduction. |
| Unclear | The company announces cuts without explaining whether AI played a role. |
A later Computerworld timeline cited Challenger research reporting that AI was blamed for 40% of U.S. job cuts in May 2026, compared with 7% in January. That later statistic is useful context, but it does not establish the cause of all cuts counted through March 11.
Global total, U.S.-heavy impact
The 45,363 figure is global, not a U.S.-only count. The compilation included companies operating across the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia, as well as telecommunications and semiconductor businesses.
However, “68% in the United States” requires care. The classification is based on the methodology used in the compilation and may reflect company headquarters rather than the location of affected workers. A U.S.-headquartered company can eliminate jobs in several countries, while a European or Asian company can cut U.S. roles.
U.S. WARN filings also do not capture every technology layoff. They generally cover qualifying events and can differ from European consultation rules or other countries’ disclosure practices.
What the trend means for technology workers
The pattern points to labor reallocation rather than the disappearance of all technology work. Companies may eliminate generalist, support, middle-management or duplicative operational roles while hiring in different areas.

Skills likely to receive greater attention include:
- AI infrastructure and machine learning;
- data-center operations;
- cloud engineering;
- cybersecurity;
- chip design and semiconductor manufacturing;
- automation implementation;
- data engineering and technical program management.
That does not mean every worker should immediately buy an AI course or change careers. “AI experience” is a broad hiring signal whose value depends on the occupation. A short certificate may help demonstrate structured learning, but it does not guarantee employment.
Workers assessing risk should focus on transferable evidence: measurable improvements, cost savings, automation projects, revenue impact, security outcomes and the ability to work effectively with new tools. Internal mobility can also matter as much as external job hunting. Amazon’s 90-day internal-search period illustrates how a company may eliminate a role while retaining some affected employees elsewhere.

RationalFX said its compilation used sources including Layoffs.fyi, TrueUp, TechCrunch and U.S. WARN databases. These sources are useful because they identify announcements quickly, but they are not a standardized government employment database.

RationalFX aggregated publicly reported technology-company layoffs, grouped companies by headquarters country and combined company announcements with tracker and WARN information. The result is an announced-cut total, not an estimate of completed job losses or unemployment.
Best Value
- Keep track of everything from attendance to test scores
- Spiral bound
- Measures 8-1/2" x 11"
Readers should account for several limitations:
- Announced versus completed: Planned reductions may be delayed, reduced or handled through voluntary programs.
- Changing definitions: “Tech” can include e-commerce, fintech, telecom, semiconductors and technology-enabled businesses.
- Possible overlap: A company-wide announcement may include a previously reported division-level reduction.
- Geographic ambiguity: Headquarters country is not the same as employee location.
- Uneven disclosure: Public companies generally disclose more than private companies.
- Different tracker rules: Each database may define layoffs, affected roles and company scope differently.
As a result, the figure is best used as a directional indicator of restructuring activity, not as a precise count of people who lost jobs.
The number changed quickly
The March 11 total was already a dated snapshot. RationalFX later reported 78,557 global tech layoffs from January 1 through early April, including figures attributed to Oracle and Amazon. That later count should not be substituted for the March figure without clearly labeling the different cutoff date and methodology.
The practical lesson is simple: any article, chart or social-media post quoting “45,363” should include March 11, 2026. Without that date, readers may mistake an early-year snapshot for the current cumulative total.

Layoff totals cannot predict an individual employer’s next decision, but they can justify sensible preparation:
- Review your emergency fund. Estimate essential monthly spending and identify how long savings would last if income stopped.
- Check severance and benefits documents. Understand health coverage, equity vesting, unused leave and bonus treatment before a crisis.
- Keep an accomplishment record. Document measurable results, technical projects and examples of working with automation or AI tools.
- Build internal and external options. Maintain professional contacts and monitor roles in adjacent industries, not only at large technology firms.
- Compare compensation carefully. Evaluate base salary, variable pay, equity, benefits, location and job stability rather than headline pay alone.
- Use free resources first. Layoffs.fyi, Indeed, Wellfound and free employer resources can support a search before paying for subscriptions or courses.
These steps do not prevent layoffs. They reduce the financial and practical shock if a role is eliminated.
