This tracker covers publicly reported major technology-company cuts announced in 2025 and through August 16, 2026. The figures are not an official global census. They combine company announcements, regulatory and government notices, reputable reporting, and tracker estimates, which may differ in scope and may be revised.

The largest reported 2026 tech layoffs

Company-by-company notes
Oracle: the widest reported range
Public estimates place Oracle’s 2026 reduction at roughly 21,000 to 30,000 jobs. The range matters: the available reporting does not support presenting one number as settled fact. The cuts were reported alongside heavy investment in AI infrastructure, creating an apparent tension between capital spending and labor reductions.
The safest description is that Oracle underwent a large restructuring while increasing its focus on AI-related infrastructure. That does not establish that AI directly replaced every affected employee.
Amazon: corporate simplification
Amazon confirmed a January 2026 corporate reduction of about 16,000 jobs. The company’s own announcement described organizational simplification and changes to corporate teams. Amazon had also reported approximately 14,000 corporate cuts in October 2025.
These figures primarily concern corporate employees, not necessarily Amazon’s entire global workforce, warehouses, delivery network, or contractors. The company’s January announcement should be read separately from tracker estimates that may combine rounds.
Meta: workforce reallocation around AI
Reports and trackers place Meta’s 2026 reduction at approximately 8,000 to 10,400 jobs. The event has been associated with reallocation toward AI, but the range varies by source and counting method. Meta, its subsidiaries, and separate business units may also be counted differently across trackers.
Microsoft: commercial and Xbox changes
Microsoft announced workforce reductions affecting its commercial business and Xbox organization on July 6, 2026. The reported figure is about 4,800 jobs. Microsoft’s explanation focused on changes to the company and its businesses rather than describing the event as a simple replacement of workers by AI. The company’s account is available on its official blog.

Block: an explicit AI-productivity rationale
Block cut about 4,000 jobs in February 2026. Chief executive Jack Dorsey connected the reduction with building a leaner company and improving productivity through AI. This makes Block one of the clearer examples of an AI-explicit explanation, although the announcement still represents a management and cost decision, not proof that a specific number of roles was technically automated.
Atlassian: about 10% of employees
Atlassian announced a reduction of about 1,600 jobs, or roughly 10% of its workforce, in March 2026. The company described a rebalancing toward AI and enterprise sales. The percentage is important: absolute headcount rankings can obscure the larger effect of a cut at a smaller company.
Other reported 2026 reductions
- LinkedIn: About 875 jobs, according to industry trackers.
- Synopsys: Estimates range from approximately 2,000 to 4,100, depending on whether multiple rounds and acquired businesses are included.
- Intel: Multiple semiconductor-restructuring rounds span 2025 and 2026; some 2025 reports cited more than 3,000 jobs, while cumulative tracker figures may be higher.
- IBM and Red Hat, Salesforce, HP, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Dell, Epic Games, and other gaming, hardware, telecom, and IT-services companies: These businesses also reported or were linked to restructuring and workforce reductions, but the scope and confirmation level vary by event.
Where a company has not confirmed a number, this article treats the figure as reported or estimated rather than definitive.
What happened in 2025?
2026 did not begin a new phenomenon. It extended a reduction cycle that was already visible in 2025. A TechCrunch roundup based on Layoffs.fyi counted more than 150,000 technology jobs across 549 companies in 2025. That is a tracker-derived estimate, not a government count.
Important 2025 developments included:
- Amazon’s approximately 14,000 corporate cuts in October;
- Multiple Microsoft reductions, with some reports placing its 2025 cuts near 15,000;
- Salesforce reductions affecting customer-support work;
- Restructuring at IBM and Red Hat;
- Intel and other semiconductor cuts;
- Multi-year workforce reductions planned by HP;
- Buyouts, performance reviews, reorganizations, and slower hiring at Google and other large companies.
These events had different causes. A semiconductor site reduction, a customer-support reorganization, and a gaming-studio closure should not be placed in the same analytical category merely because all reduce headcount.

There is no single authoritative total for global technology layoffs in 2025–2026. Layoffs.fyi’s 2026 tracker listed approximately 120,000 technology jobs cut during 2026 by July reporting, while its 2025 tracker supported the estimate of more than 150,000 cuts for that year. Those figures should not be added mechanically: publication dates, geography, company coverage, and counting rules differ.

A tracker total usually counts publicly reported events. It may miss confidential reductions, overseas cuts, contractors, unfilled positions, voluntary departures, and performance-related terminations. It may also double-count a company when a later announcement summarizes earlier rounds.
Four numbers should be kept separate for every event:
- Announced number: what the company formally disclosed.
- Estimated number: a figure reported by journalists or trackers.
- Completed terminations: jobs already eliminated.
- Planned number: jobs expected to disappear later.
A WARN filing can help document a qualifying U.S. mass layoff or site closure, but it may precede termination and does not show a company’s global total.

Why are companies cutting jobs?
What companies say
Common explanations include organizational simplification, fewer management layers, efficiency, cost control, business-unit weakness, reduced demand, acquisition integration, and a shift toward AI products or infrastructure.
Some companies explicitly cite AI-driven productivity. Others mention AI only as part of a broader transformation. Still others provide no public AI explanation. The distinction is essential:
- AI-linked: The company explicitly cites AI, automation, AI investment, or an AI-first reorganization.
- AI-adjacent: AI investment is part of the context, but the stated reason is efficiency, duplication, finances, or a business downturn.
- AI relationship not established: The company gives another explanation or no usable public explanation.
The broader economic explanation
Several forces overlap:
- Companies that expanded rapidly during the pandemic are normalizing their corporate workforces.
- AI infrastructure requires substantial spending on data centers, chips, networking, and energy.
- Executives are shifting spending from labor-intensive support and operations toward capital-intensive technology.
- Investors may reward margin expansion even when revenue remains strong.
- High financing costs and weaker venture funding continue to pressure startups.
- Mergers and acquisitions create duplicate teams.
- Gaming, hardware, telecom, and semiconductor businesses face distinct product and demand cycles.
The evidence therefore supports saying that companies cited AI or AI-related transformation in some cases. It does not support saying that AI directly replaced every person counted in the layoff totals.

Are engineers the main victims?
No. Layoffs affect a wide range of functions, including:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Customer support and service operations;
- Recruiting and human resources;

- Middle management;
- Product and user-experience teams;
- Trust and safety and content moderation;
- Corporate operations and administration;
- Hardware and manufacturing;
- Game development;
- Some engineering and research groups whose priorities have changed.
Salesforce’s reported customer-support reductions are materially different from a semiconductor-factory closure or a reduction in Xbox development. A serious tracker should identify the affected function instead of labeling every event a software-engineering layoff.
Are companies laying off workers while hiring?
Often, yes. A company can reduce support, recruiting, or administrative headcount while hiring for:
- AI research and machine-learning engineering;
- Data-center construction and operations;
- Chip design and specialized hardware;
- Cloud infrastructure;
- Cybersecurity;
- Enterprise sales;
- AI safety, evaluation, and model operations.
This is better described as labor reallocation than as proof that each eliminated job has been replaced by an AI system. New roles may require different skills, be located in different countries, or be far fewer than the jobs removed. Capital investment in data centers also creates economic activity without necessarily creating equivalent numbers of ordinary office jobs.

What laid-off workers should check
The practical consequences depend on the worker’s country, state, contract, immigration status, and benefit plan. A checklist can still help:
- Save documentation: Keep the termination notice, severance offer, equity statements, benefit documents, performance records, and recent pay information.
- Check severance terms: Review the payment schedule, release deadline, continued benefits, bonus treatment, equity vesting, and any noncompete or confidentiality language.
- Confirm health coverage: Ask when employer coverage ends and what continuation or replacement options exist.
- Apply for unemployment promptly: Use the official government or state system, not a recruiter or paid intermediary. CareerOneStop provides U.S. information and links to state resources.
- Review visa deadlines: Workers on employment-based visas should contact a qualified immigration lawyer quickly; deadlines and options are jurisdiction-specific.
- Check equity treatment: Confirm vesting dates, exercise windows, tax consequences, and what happens to restricted stock or options.
- Verify WARN information: A state filing may clarify whether a particular site or group is included, but it may not cover global staff or contractors.
- Be cautious with paid help: Job boards and résumé services can be useful, but no paid tool guarantees employment. Avoid anyone charging simply to submit ordinary applications.
Useful free or low-cost starting points include LinkedIn Jobs, Indeed, official state unemployment portals, public workforce agencies, and employer-provided outplacement services. Workers should first check whether severance already includes access to a service such as LHH or Randstad RiseSmart.
Methodology and limitations
This tracker includes major publicly reported reductions at software, cloud, semiconductor, hardware, internet, cybersecurity, fintech, gaming, telecom, and IT-services companies, generally using a threshold of 500 jobs, 5% of the workforce, or exceptional strategic importance.
It excludes ordinary attrition, hiring freezes, unquantified reorganizations, and contractor reductions unless a credible source provides a specific figure. Subsidiaries, acquired businesses, and parent companies may be counted differently by different sources. Global reductions may be disclosed only through U.S. numbers, while WARN notices cover only qualifying U.S. circumstances.
The source hierarchy is: company announcements and filings; government notices; major outlets such as Reuters, AP, Bloomberg, the Financial Times, and the Wall Street Journal; then reputable trackers such as Layoffs.fyi’s 2025 tracker and 2026 tracker. Figures marked as estimates should not be presented as confirmed company announcements.
Because this is a continuously changing subject, later updates should preserve earlier figures, identify revisions, and state whether a new number is announced, estimated, completed, or planned.
The bottom line
Technology layoffs remained widespread in 2025 and accelerated in 2026, but the evidence does not support a simple “AI caused all the cuts” narrative. The current pattern is a combination of workforce normalization, margin pressure, restructuring, business-specific weakness, and a major shift of capital and talent toward AI, cloud infrastructure, chips, cybersecurity, and other strategic priorities.
