For most long-term investors, TCS is the steadier core holding; Coforge is the higher-growth, higher-execution-risk choice. TCS combines much greater scale, diversification, margins and disclosed free cash flow. Coforge has delivered substantially faster recent growth and a rapidly expanding executable order book. Neither conclusion makes a stock attractive at any price: a dated share-price and valuation check is essential before investing.
The decision in one view
TCS and Coforge are both Indian IT-services companies, but they occupy different places in a portfolio. TCS is a very large, diversified enterprise-services platform whose financial profile is built around resilience, broad client relationships and cash generation. Coforge is much smaller and more specialised, with recent growth rates that are several times higher and a strong pipeline of executable work. That growth comes with greater sensitivity to large-deal timing, client and vertical concentration, integration, and the price investors pay for the shares.

A conservative investor building a core Indian technology allocation will generally find TCS easier to underwrite. An investor deliberately seeking faster growth and able to tolerate more volatility may prefer Coforge, but should demand evidence that growth is converting into durable operating profit and cash rather than relying only on bookings.

| Measure | TCS | Coforge | What it means for a long-term investor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latest fiscal revenue cited | FY2025: $30.18 billion | FY2025: INR 12,050.7 crore (about $1.45 billion) | TCS has a vastly larger base and more room to absorb shocks across clients, regions and service lines. |
| Recent revenue growth | FY2025: 3.8% reported dollars; 4.2% constant currency. FY2026: 4.6% year over year. | FY2025: 32.0% constant currency and 31.5% in US dollars. FY2026: 29.2% year over year. | Coforge has the clear recent growth advantage, although the periods, currencies and acquisition effects must be aligned before making a precise forecast. |
| Profitability measure cited | FY2025 operating margin: 24.3%. FY2026 operating margin: 25.0%. | Q1 FY2026 EBITDA margin: 17.5%. FY2026 EBIT margin: 14.4%; the latter expanded 370 basis points. | TCS currently shows the higher disclosed operating profitability. EBITDA and EBIT are different measures, so they should not be compared as if they were identical. |
| Order visibility | FY2025 TCV: $39.4 billion. FY2026 TCV: $40.7 billion. | FY2025 next-twelve-month executable order book rose 47.7%. FY2026 next-twelve-month executable order book: $1.75 billion, up 16.4%. | Both have substantial booked work, but TCV and an executable next-twelve-month order book are not the same metric. |
| Scale indicators | 607,979 employees; 64 clients above $100 million; 13.3% trailing-12-month IT-services attrition. | 35,777 employees; 21 large deals reported for FY2026. | TCS has a broader disclosed customer and workforce base. Coforge’s deal count highlights momentum but not the same degree of diversification. |
| Cash evidence | FY2025 free cash flow: $5.49 billion. | A comparable free-cash-flow figure is not stated in the cited disclosures. | TCS offers stronger published evidence for cash conversion; Coforge requires a review of its latest cash-flow statements. |
Scale and diversification: why TCS is the safer starting point
Scale matters in IT services because a provider must continuously fund training, sales teams, cloud and engineering capabilities, cybersecurity, delivery centres and acquisitions. A larger revenue base spreads those costs and makes the loss or delay of one contract less damaging to group results. It also gives a supplier more opportunities to cross-sell services to existing customers.

TCS’s disclosed workforce, client-band data and revenue show a platform operating at a very different scale from Coforge. Having 64 clients in the $100-million-plus category reduces dependence on any single account, even though large clients can still defer projects or renegotiate rates. A workforce of more than 600,000 also provides delivery capacity across many locations and skill pools. That breadth is a resilience asset when one industry or geography slows.
Coforge’s smaller platform can be an advantage when speed, specialist expertise and senior attention matter. Smaller companies may add a meaningful customer or vertical faster than a giant can. The trade-off is that a few large wins or losses can move reported growth and margins more sharply. The company reported 21 large deals for FY2026, which is encouraging for demand but also means investors should examine customer concentration, deal size, ramp schedules and renewal terms in the annual report.
What to check beyond employee counts
- Revenue by client, vertical and geography, including the percentage contributed by the top 10 customers.
- How much of growth came from acquisitions, currency translation, pricing, volume and new clients.
- Whether utilisation, subcontracting and attrition indicate that delivery capacity is keeping pace with bookings.
- Customer tenure and renewal rates, not just the number of new logos announced.
Growth: Coforge leads, but the quality of growth matters
Coforge’s recent expansion is the central reason investors consider it alongside a much larger incumbent. Its FY2025 constant-currency revenue growth was 32.0%, and FY2026 growth was 29.2%. In the first quarter of FY2026, revenue reached $442.4 million, 54.5% higher than a year earlier. Those rates indicate strong demand and a rapidly increasing base of delivered work.
TCS grew more slowly: reported-dollar revenue rose 3.8% in FY2025, or 4.2% in constant currency, followed by 4.6% year-over-year growth in FY2026. Its five-year revenue compound annual growth rate was 10.2%. A mature company of TCS’s size does not need to match a smaller rival’s percentage growth to create shareholder value, but its lower growth places more weight on margin stability, capital returns and the valuation at which the shares are purchased.

These percentages are not a clean head-to-head forecast. Fiscal-year definitions, currency bases, acquisitions and the timing of major contracts can materially change the comparison. Coforge’s very high rate is measured from a smaller base, while TCS’s percentage is diluted by its enormous starting revenue. Before extrapolating either rate, separate organic growth from acquired revenue and reconcile constant-currency figures with reported dollars.
Questions that test whether Coforge’s growth is durable
- Does the executable order book convert into revenue at the stated pace, or are start dates moving out?
- Are new contracts priced to preserve margin after hiring, subcontracting and transition costs?
- Is growth broad across verticals and regions, or dependent on a small number of large transactions?
- Does operating cash flow rise with accounting profit, or does working capital absorb the benefit?
Margins and cash generation
TCS reported a 24.3% operating margin for FY2025 and 25.0% for FY2026, with the latter described as a four-year high. Those margins provide room to keep investing in artificial-intelligence capabilities, engineering talent and ecosystem partnerships while absorbing wage, travel or pricing pressure. TCS also disclosed $5.49 billion of FY2025 free cash flow, an important indicator that reported earnings were supported by cash after capital expenditure.
Coforge reported a 17.5% EBITDA margin in Q1 FY2026 and a 14.4% EBIT margin for FY2026 after a 370-basis-point expansion. Its investor-relations material also reports an 18.6% EBITDA margin for FY2026. EBITDA excludes depreciation and amortisation, whereas EBIT includes them; the two figures therefore answer different questions and should not be treated as conflicting operating-margin declarations. The direction is positive, but the absolute profitability remains below TCS’s operating-margin profile on the measures disclosed.
No directly comparable Coforge free-cash-flow figure is stated in the cited material. Read its latest statement of cash flows for operating cash conversion, capitalised development costs, lease payments, acquisition payments and changes in receivables. Fast-growing service companies can show strong earnings while cash is temporarily tied up in unbilled revenue or collections, so cash conversion is a necessary confirmation rather than an optional extra.

How to compare profitability correctly
- Use the same period and the same currency basis for both companies.
- Compare EBIT with EBIT or EBITDA with EBITDA; do not place one beside the other and call the difference a margin gap.
- Adjust your interpretation for acquisition amortisation, restructuring charges and exceptional items disclosed in the accounts.
- Check free cash flow against net income over several years, then investigate any persistent gap.
Order books: useful visibility, different definitions
TCS reported total contract value of $39.4 billion for FY2025 and $40.7 billion for FY2026. TCV generally represents the total potential value of contracts signed during a period, often covering several years and subject to client decisions, milestones and termination clauses. It is a demand and sales indicator, not a promise that the entire amount will become next year’s revenue.
Coforge reported a next-twelve-month executable order book increase of 47.7% in FY2025 and a $1.75-billion balance for FY2026, up 16.4%. It also reported $507 million of fresh order intake in Q1 FY2026 and $2.26 billion of FY2026 order intake. An executable next-twelve-month measure is closer to near-term revenue visibility than a multiyear TCV, but it still depends on mobilisation, customer approvals, delivery capacity and renewal or cancellation terms.
For that reason, ranking the companies by the absolute size of these figures would be misleading. TCS’s TCV is many times larger partly because the company itself is many times larger and because the measure covers a different horizon. The more useful questions are conversion rate, timing, margin, concentration and the proportion of bookings that is genuinely incremental.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOrder-book warning signs
- Bookings rise while revenue growth or utilisation does not follow within the promised period.
- Large deals are repeatedly announced but their contribution is delayed by transition or client budget approvals.
- Order value is concentrated in one client, vertical, geography or government programme.
- Margins decline as the company hires ahead of ramps or relies on expensive subcontractors.
Strategic positioning: broad enterprise services versus specialised AI-led engineering
TCS describes continued investment in AI-led engineering, talent and ecosystem partnerships. Its breadth allows it to sell AI, consulting, engineering, cloud, application and business-process work to a wide enterprise base. For a long-term holder, that diversification can reduce dependence on one technology cycle, although it may also make percentage growth less dramatic.

Coforge presents an AI-native engineering-services model with industry specialisation. Its FY2025 management commentary attributed the 32.0% constant-currency expansion to 14 large deals and broad-based growth across its verticals and geographic businesses. Specialisation can produce strong domain knowledge and faster productisation, but it can also expose the company to a narrower set of spending cycles. Investors should identify which verticals supplied the growth and whether AI work is recurring managed revenue, project revenue or an early-stage capability investment.
What AI changes—and what it does not
AI can increase demand for data engineering, modernisation, model governance, cybersecurity and integration. It can also automate portions of traditional application work, pressure billing rates and allow clients to accomplish more with fewer external hours. Neither company’s AI positioning by itself proves future earnings growth. Track revenue from AI-related services, pricing, utilisation, productivity savings passed to clients, intellectual-property ownership and the effect on headcount per unit of revenue.
Risk comparison for a long-term portfolio
| Risk | How it can affect TCS | How it can affect Coforge | Investor check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Client concentration | Scale reduces single-client dependence, but large enterprise budgets can still be delayed. | A large contract or vertical may have a bigger effect on quarterly growth and margins. | Read top-client and vertical revenue percentages and their year-over-year changes. |
| Execution | Very large programmes require complex staffing and transition management; a minor percentage miss can be material in dollars. | Rapid hiring and multiple large deals can strain delivery, integration and quality controls. | Compare bookings with revenue conversion, attrition, utilisation and customer references disclosed in filings. |
| Currency | Most revenue is earned outside India, so exchange rates affect reported rupee results and margins. | The same export-oriented exposure can make reported growth differ from constant-currency growth. | Review hedging policy and compare constant-currency with reported figures. |
| Pricing and wage pressure | High margins can attract competition and create a larger base from which small rate changes matter. | Lower margins leave less room for wage inflation, subcontracting or transition costs. | Monitor gross margin, subcontractor spend, utilisation and attrition together. |
| Balance-sheet and acquisition risk | Large acquisitions or capital-return decisions still require scrutiny despite scale. | Acquisitions can accelerate capability and growth but add integration, amortisation and financing risk. | Check net cash or debt, contingent liabilities, goodwill and acquisition cash payments in the latest accounts. |
| Valuation | A quality premium can erase the benefit of stable operations if growth disappoints. | High-growth expectations can be embedded in the share price, making a slowdown expensive. | Use a dated P/E, EV/EBITDA and free-cash-flow yield comparison before buying. |
Valuation: the missing part of the decision
Operating quality does not determine investment returns without an entry price. Current share prices and valuation multiples are not stated in the company disclosures cited here, so this comparison cannot responsibly call either stock a buy. Obtain both prices on the same date and use the latest reported trailing or forward earnings consistently.

A practical valuation stress test
- Record each stock’s closing price, shares outstanding and market capitalisation on one date.
- Calculate trailing P/E from the latest twelve-month diluted earnings per share.
- Calculate EV/EBITDA using the same period, adding debt and lease liabilities and subtracting cash consistently.
- Build three cases: a slower-growth case, a management-plan case and a faster-growth case. Apply a reasonable terminal multiple to each rather than assuming the current premium lasts forever.
- Check how much of the implied value depends on Coforge maintaining unusually high growth or TCS maintaining unusually high margins.
- Set a position size that still fits your portfolio if the multiple contracts before earnings catch up.
Which stock fits which investor?
TCS as a core holding
TCS fits an investor who values business resilience, broad diversification, high operating margins, visible cash generation and a lower probability that one missed deal changes the investment thesis. It can serve as a core technology allocation when the investor accepts that a mature scale may produce slower percentage growth. The purchase still requires a valuation that leaves room for ordinary execution rather than assuming a premium multiple will expand indefinitely.

Coforge as a growth allocation
Coforge fits an investor who wants greater exposure to rapid IT-services expansion, accepts more volatility and is willing to monitor execution closely. The thesis rests on converting a strong executable order book and large-deal momentum into sustained revenue, improving margins and cash. Because the company is smaller, position sizing and diversification matter more than they would for a broad platform.
When neither is appropriate
Neither stock is a fit if you need predictable near-term returns, cannot tolerate equity drawdowns, or have an already concentrated portfolio of Indian technology companies. A long-term label does not remove the need for an emergency fund, asset allocation and a maximum position limit.
A step-by-step decision process
- Define the role. Decide whether the purchase is intended as a core holding, a growth satellite or a short-term trade. The evidence here supports a different role for each company.
- Align the data. Put both companies on the same fiscal-period, currency and accounting basis. Separate reported growth, constant-currency growth, acquisitions and organic growth.
- Verify the latest accounts. Review revenue by client and vertical, operating profit, EBIT or EBITDA reconciliation, cash flow, debt, lease liabilities and contingent liabilities.
- Test bookings. Determine what portion of TCV or executable order book is expected to convert within 12 months, the margin attached to it and the customer concentration involved.
- Price the shares. Record a dated price, market capitalisation, trailing P/E, forward P/E and EV/EBITDA. Do not substitute a historical multiple for a current one.
- Run downside cases. Model slower growth, a margin reduction, currency movement and multiple compression. For Coforge, include a delayed large-deal ramp; for TCS, include prolonged low growth.
- Choose sizing and review rules. Set a maximum weight before buying and define the facts that would invalidate the thesis, such as persistent cash-flow deterioration, lost major clients or a material margin collapse.
What to monitor after investing
- Revenue and bookings: compare conversion of TCS TCV and Coforge executable order book with management’s timing expectations.
- Margins: watch operating margin at TCS and the relationship among Coforge EBIT, EBITDA, utilisation and subcontracting costs.
- Cash: reconcile profit with operating cash flow and free cash flow, including working-capital movements.
- People: follow attrition, hiring, utilisation and wage trends; a large order book is less valuable if delivery capacity is unavailable.
- Concentration: monitor top-client, vertical and geographic shares, especially after a large deal changes the revenue mix.
- Capital allocation: review dividends, buybacks, acquisitions, debt and cash balances rather than assuming all earnings are distributable.
- Valuation: update the multiple after every major earnings release; a rising share price can make an unchanged business materially less attractive.
Final assessment
The evidence supports two distinct theses rather than a universal winner. TCS offers the stronger quality-and-resilience profile: exceptional scale, broad diversification, higher disclosed operating margins, a substantial free-cash-flow record and a large contract base. Coforge offers the stronger recent growth-and-momentum profile: rapid constant-currency expansion, large deal activity and a growing executable order book, but with a smaller platform and more execution sensitivity.
