What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: An unexpected message that claims to be from the IRS, creates urgency, threatens punishment, promises a refund, or demands sensitive information or immediate payment is suspicious. Stop the interaction and verify through IRS.gov or your IRS Online Account that you open independently—not through a link, phone number, attachment, or QR code in the message.
The IRS normally starts contact with a letter sent through the U.S. mail. That rule has important exceptions, so an unfamiliar phone call is not automatically fake and a mailed notice is not automatically genuine. The safest test is whether you can confirm the matter through an independently located IRS channel.

What are the biggest IRS scam warning signs?
The Internal Revenue Service identifies several patterns that should make you pause:
Recommended Free Tools
- Unexpected contact: You receive a call, text, email, social-media message, or visit you were not expecting.
- Pressure to act immediately: The sender says you must pay, click, disclose information, or decide now.
- Threats: The message threatens arrest, deportation, a police visit, license loss, account seizure, or another immediate consequence.
- Promises of money: It offers an unrequested refund, credit, deduction, or stimulus-style payment in exchange for information or a fee.
- Requests for sensitive data: It asks for a Social Security number, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, bank details, card numbers, passwords, one-time codes, or a photograph of identification.
- “Pay now or else” demands: The sender insists on gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, a payment app, a prepaid card, or a link to an unfamiliar payment page.
- Suspicious writing or links: Spelling and grammar errors, an unusual sender address, or a web address that imitates but is not IRS.gov are useful clues. They are warning signs, not a complete forensic test; a polished message can still be fraudulent.
Scammers can copy logos, notices, employee names, and caller-ID information. Treat the combination of surprise, urgency, threats, money, and data requests as the reason to disengage—not as a puzzle you must solve while the sender is on the line.

Does the IRS call, text, or email taxpayers?
How the IRS normally starts contact
The IRS generally contacts a taxpayer first by U.S. mail. It does not initiate contact through email or social media, and it sends text messages only when the taxpayer has given permission for that type of communication. A social-media direct message is never from us, the IRS says.
Why “the IRS never calls” is too broad
Do not rely on a blanket rule that every IRS call is a scam. IRS employees can call in certain situations, and private collection agencies working under an IRS contract may call about some inactive tax debts after the taxpayer and an authorized representative have received written notice. Even in those circumstances, you should verify the issue independently before discussing your account or paying.

What a real contact will not prove
Caller ID, a badge number, a familiar-sounding voice, a copied letterhead, or knowledge of part of your tax history does not authenticate the contact. The IRS’s 2026 warnings also describe AI-enabled voice impersonation by phone. That warning identifies a tactic; it does not establish that any particular call used AI.

- End the interaction. Hang up. Do not reply to the email or text, click a link, scan a QR code, open an attachment, or continue a social-media chat.
- Open IRS.gov manually. Type the address into your browser or use a bookmark you created previously. Do not follow a link from the message.
- Check your IRS Online Account. Look for a matching notice, balance, payment history, or other account activity. The account is useful for monitoring, but reach it independently.
- Match the notice. Use the IRS notices-and-letters search on IRS.gov to compare the notice number and subject with official descriptions. A scammer may copy a real notice format, so a visual match alone is not enough.
- Find customer-service details independently. Use the telephone number and instructions published on IRS.gov, not a number read by a caller or printed in an unsolicited email.
- Record details before deleting evidence. Note the phone number, sender address, date and time, claimed employee name, payment method requested, and any web address. Do not call the number back to test it.
If you have a tax professional or authorized representative, you can ask them to help check an issue through their established IRS channel. They should not simply validate the caller’s number or link.
How do I report an IRS scam email, text, call, or social-media account?
Reporting instructions depend on the channel. Preserve the original long enough to capture the required details, then remove it from your devices.

| Contact type | What to do | Where to report |
|---|---|---|
| Do not reply, click links, or open attachments. Forward the suspicious email as instructed, preserving the original message and headers when possible. | Send it to [email protected]. The IRS reporting page explains how to attach the message. | |
| Text message | Do not reply or click. Include the sender’s number, your receiving number, the message, and the date, time, and time zone. Use subject “Text,” then delete the original after reporting. | Email the details to [email protected]. You may also forward the text to 7726 (SPAM), which helps wireless providers identify similar campaigns. |
| Phone call | Write down the number and details, then hang up. Do not call the number back or make a payment while connected. | Report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) Hotline or call 800-366-4484. |
| Social media | Do not answer a direct message. Report the account through the platform’s reporting tool and copy its complete profile or post URL. | Send the full URL to [email protected] with subject “Social media.” The IRS says it never sends direct messages. |
| Fake website, letter, or another method | Save the web address or envelope details without visiting the site again. Do not provide information through the supplied form or QR code. | Use the IRS reporting page’s instructions for websites, mail, and other channels. |
Reporting does not make a suspicious contact legitimate or guarantee that money will be recovered. It helps investigators and providers connect related attempts.
What should I do if I gave a scammer money or personal information?
First response
- Stop contact and send nothing else. A caller who says you must pay a “release,” “recovery,” or “verification” fee is continuing the scam.
- Call the financial institution involved. Use the number on your card, statement, or the institution’s independently opened website. Ask whether a transfer, card charge, wire, payment-app transaction, or account credential can be stopped or reversed, and change exposed passwords.
- Use IdentityTheft.gov. Follow its recovery plan for the information that was exposed. Keep the confirmation and action checklist.
- Report identity exposure to the IRS. If your SSN or ITIN was stolen, report it through IdentityTheft.gov and to the IRS; consider notifying your state tax agency as well.
- Review your IRS Online Account. Watch for unfamiliar tax returns, notices, payment changes, or profile updates. Save copies of anything you did not authorize.
- Secure your devices. If you opened a malicious link or attachment, update security software, run a scan, and change passwords from a clean device. Do not assume that closing the window removed the threat.
Choose the recovery path based on what was exposed
| What happened | Priority actions |
|---|---|
| Money, card details, bank account, or payment-app access | Contact the bank, card issuer, wire service, or payment app immediately; request a stop, recall, or dispute; change credentials and report the fraudulent transaction. |
| SSN or ITIN, but no known fraudulent return | Complete IdentityTheft.gov’s plan, notify the IRS and state tax agency, monitor your IRS Online Account, and consider an IRS IP PIN. |
| A tax return was filed without your permission | Follow the IRS identity-theft instructions, respond to any IRS verification notice through an independently located channel, and retain the case information and documents. |
| Passwords or one-time security codes | Change the affected password immediately from a trusted device, sign out other sessions, enable multifactor authentication, and tell the service provider that the account may have been taken over. |
Be wary of a second caller who promises to recover your money for an upfront fee. That is a common follow-on scam, not an IRS recovery service.

How do I get an IRS IP PIN?
An Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) is a six-digit number used to help prevent a federal income-tax return from being filed fraudulently with your SSN or ITIN. The IRS provides eligibility and enrollment instructions through IRS.gov. Apply or retrieve it only through an IRS page or account that you opened independently; do not give an IP PIN to a caller who contacted you unexpectedly.
An IP PIN helps protect a tax return, but it does not stop every form of identity theft, prevent a scammer from taking money, or prove that a phone call is genuine. Continue monitoring your IRS Online Account and financial accounts after an exposure.
What changed in the IRS scam warnings for 2026?
In a January 8, 2026 Tax Tip, the IRS warned that phishing emails and smishing texts can contain links or attachments that damage a computer as well as steal information. An April 10, 2026 Dirty Dozen warning included IRS impersonation by email and text and highlighted AI-enabled impersonation by phone. These are current agency warnings about techniques, not measurements of how common a tactic is and not proof that a specific message used artificial intelligence.

Because criminals change phone numbers, domains, payment methods, and scripts quickly, check the IRS’s current contact-authentication and reporting instructions whenever you receive a new message. The safest constant is procedural: stop, verify through an independently opened IRS channel, report the attempt, and then secure any exposed account.
