Tax Payment Plans and Extensions: Eligibility, Costs and How to Apply in 2026

Short answer: A tax filing extension gives you more time to submit a return, not more time to pay the tax. Any unpaid balance is still due on the original deadline, and interest plus applicable late-payment penalties can continue. If you cannot pay in full, request an IRS payment plan separately. Individuals who have filed all required returns and owe $50,000 or less in combined tax, penalties and interest generally can apply online for a simple long-term plan; a short-term plan may be available for balances under $100,000 that can be paid within 180 days.

Extension or payment plan: which problem are you solving?

These are two different IRS arrangements. An extension changes the date your return is due. A payment plan changes how you pay an assessed balance. You may need one or both.

Option What it changes Main limits Do interest and penalties continue? Typical application route
Individual filing extension Gives additional time to file the federal individual return. For most 2025 individual returns filed in 2026, the extended deadline is October 15, 2026, when the request is made by April 15, 2026. Yes. Tax due remains payable by the original deadline. Form 4868, or an IRS Direct Pay transaction designated as an extension payment.
Business filing extension Gives an eligible business or information return additional filing time. Form 7004 generally allows six months, subject to exceptions for particular entities and tax years. Yes. Form 7004 does not extend the time to pay. Form 7004 and payment of expected tax by the original due date.
Individual short-term payment plan Time to pay the balance in full. Generally less than $100,000 combined tax, penalties and interest, with payment completed within 180 days. Yes, until paid in full. IRS Online Payment Agreement (OPA), with other routes available if online filing is unsuitable.
Individual long-term installment agreement Monthly payments over time. For a simple online plan, generally $50,000 or less and all required returns filed. The proposal must finish before the collection statute expires. Yes, until paid in full. OPA, Form 9465, or telephone contact when required.

The IRS summarizes the distinction plainly: “An extension provides extra time to file, not additional time to pay.”

How an individual filing extension works

Form 4868

Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, is the standard individual request. It can be filed electronically or on paper. The form asks for an estimate of your total tax, payments already made and expected balance. An extension is generally automatic when the form is timely filed, but it does not eliminate tax due or create a payment arrangement.

Paying through IRS Direct Pay

An IRS Direct Pay transaction marked for an “Extension” can generally create the filing extension without sending a separate Form 4868. The payment designation handles filing relief only; it does not move the payment deadline. Pay what you can by the original due date to reduce the amount on which interest and late-payment penalties accrue.

2025 individual returns filed in 2026

For most 2025 individual returns, the regular deadline is April 15, 2026. If the extension request is made by that date, the extended filing deadline is October 15, 2026. A different due date can apply when a taxpayer is abroad, in a federally declared disaster area or subject to a special statutory rule, so check the instructions that apply to your return.

What to estimate before filing

  • Estimate total 2025 tax, including self-employment tax or other amounts not covered by withholding.
  • Subtract federal withholding, estimated payments and refundable credits you reasonably expect.
  • Pay the estimated balance with the extension request if possible.
  • Keep confirmation of an electronic submission or proof of mailing for a paper Form 4868.

An extension can prevent a failure-to-file penalty when the return is submitted by the extended date, but it does not stop the failure-to-pay charge on an unpaid balance.

Business filing extensions: Form 7004

Businesses use Form 7004, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns, for eligible returns. The current instructions generally provide six additional months, with exceptions that depend on the entity, return and tax year.

The instructions are explicit: “Form 7004 does not extend the time to pay any tax due.” A corporation, partnership or other business must generally pay the expected tax by the original return due date even when Form 7004 is filed. Underpaying the estimate can lead to interest and applicable late-payment penalties.

Individual online payment-plan rules do not automatically apply to business accounts. A business that cannot pay should use the telephone number on its IRS notice or the business taxpayer line to discuss available arrangements. Have the entity’s identification number, filed returns, current balance and a realistic payment proposal ready.

Who generally qualifies for an individual IRS payment plan?

Simple long-term plan

The IRS Online Payment Agreement page says an individual may qualify for a simple plan when combined tax, penalties and interest are $50,000 or less and every required return has been filed. The payment proposal must satisfy the balance by the collection statute expiration date, normally up to 10 years from assessment, although statutory suspensions or extensions can change that period. The IRS may require a different arrangement when the proposed term would run past the applicable expiration date.

Short-term plan

A short-term plan is generally available when combined tax, penalties and interest are less than $100,000 and the taxpayer can pay the entire balance within 180 days. The arrangement has no setup fee. It is not a pause in collection costs: interest and applicable late-payment penalties continue until the account is paid.

Ongoing compliance requirement

You must remain current after approval. File future returns on time, make required estimated tax payments and make every installment by its due date. Falling behind can cause the agreement to default or require reinstatement. A refund may be applied to your IRS balance while a plan is active rather than paid to you.

When online eligibility may not fit

An online application may be unavailable or unsuitable when the balance exceeds the simple-plan threshold, required returns are missing, the account involves a business, or you need an arrangement with terms the online system does not offer. In those cases, follow the number on an IRS notice, contact the individual taxpayer line or submit Form 9465 as appropriate.

Payment-plan costs in 2026

The IRS fee table updated March 3, 2026 lists these setup charges. Fees are separate from tax, interest and penalties.

Arrangement Payment method Listed setup fee Important qualification
Short-term plan Payment in full within 180 days $0 Interest and applicable penalties continue.
Online long-term plan Automatic direct debit $29 Direct debit generally has the lower online setup fee.
Online long-term plan Not paid by direct debit $69 Interest and applicable penalties continue.
Existing agreement revision or reinstatement Method depends on the action $6 listed Qualifying low-income taxpayers may receive reimbursement or a reduced or waived fee.

The IRS lists lower or waived/reimbursed fees for qualifying low-income taxpayers. Eligibility depends on IRS criteria and the arrangement selected, so review the fee shown during application or ask the IRS how the low-income rules apply to your account.

The setup fee is not the main cost of carrying debt. Interest and applicable late-payment penalties accrue until the balance is fully paid. A longer schedule can therefore cost more even when its monthly payment is affordable.

How to apply for an individual payment plan

  1. File every required return. Submit missing returns before applying. A plan does not replace the obligation to file.
  2. Calculate the current balance. Include tax, estimated interest and penalties. The IRS account balance can change as additional charges post.
  3. Sign in to your IRS Online Account. Start the Online Payment Agreement application. Eligible applicants receive an immediate online approval or rejection notice.
  4. Select the shortest realistic option. Choose a short-term plan if you can pay in full within 180 days. Otherwise select a monthly long-term plan and propose an amount that will finish before the collection statute expiration date.
  5. Choose the payment method. Automatic direct debit generally carries the $29 online setup fee, compared with $69 for an online long-term plan without direct debit. Confirm the bank details and withdrawal date carefully.
  6. Read the terms before submitting. Check the installment amount, due date, setup fee, notice requirements and conditions for remaining in good standing.
  7. Use an alternative route when needed. If the online tool cannot accept your situation, file Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request, or call the number on your IRS notice or the individual taxpayer line. Keep copies of the form and delivery confirmation.
  8. Maintain compliance. File future returns, pay estimated tax when required and make each installment on time. Contact the IRS promptly if a payment problem is unavoidable rather than skipping an installment.

Using Form 9465

Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request, asks the IRS to approve monthly payments when you cannot pay the full amount shown on a return or notice. It is the paper alternative when the online application is not available or does not fit your circumstances. The form requires identifying information, the amount you can pay, preferred payment date and financial details requested for the type of agreement.

Submitting Form 9465 does not itself guarantee approval or stop interest and penalties. Continue paying what you can and follow any instructions on your IRS notice while the request is pending. The IRS may ask for additional financial information or propose different terms.

Interest, penalties and refunds while a plan is active

Unpaid tax keeps accruing charges

Interest and applicable late-payment penalties continue from the original payment due date until the balance is paid in full. Filing an extension does not stop those accruals, and entering a payment plan does not freeze them. Paying a substantial amount with an extension request or before plan approval reduces the amount exposed to future charges.

Refunds can be redirected

If you are due a federal refund while an installment agreement is active, the IRS can apply it to your outstanding balance. This may shorten the plan, but you should still make scheduled installments unless the IRS confirms a changed payment amount or a paid-off account.

The collection statute matters

Most IRS collection activity is subject to a 10-year collection statute measured from assessment, but bankruptcy, an offer in compromise, a pending installment-agreement request and other events can suspend or extend the period. Your proposed payment schedule must fit the date that applies to your account; do not assume every balance has a full 10 years remaining.

Choosing between an extension, a plan and immediate payment

You can pay the estimated tax by the original deadline

File Form 4868 or use the extension-designated payment if you need more time to prepare the return. Pay the estimated tax by the original due date. This separates filing preparation from payment without creating installment-plan fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can pay within 180 days

File the return or extension on time, pay as much as possible immediately and request a short-term plan. There is no setup fee, but charges continue during the 180-day period.

You need monthly payments

Apply for an online long-term plan when you meet the $50,000 simple-plan and filing requirements. Compare the monthly amount with your budget and choose direct debit if it is reliable and acceptable; its listed online setup fee is lower.

You have missing returns or a larger balance

File all delinquent returns first and expect that the online simple-plan rules may not apply. Use Form 9465 or speak with the IRS using the number on your notice to identify an arrangement appropriate for the account.

You are a business

Use Form 7004 only to extend filing of an eligible return. Pay the expected tax by the original due date and contact the IRS business-taxpayer channel about payment terms if the entity cannot pay in full.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

  • Assuming an extension delays payment: Pay an estimate by the original deadline and arrange installments separately.
  • Filing Form 7004 without sending business tax: Treat the six-month extension as filing relief only; calculate and pay the liability by the original due date.
  • Applying before filing all returns: Submit missing returns and allow the IRS account to update before relying on the $50,000 online-plan rules.
  • Choosing an unaffordable monthly amount: A default can trigger collection action or reinstatement costs. Use a sustainable amount and contact the IRS before missing a payment.
  • Ignoring ongoing estimated payments: A plan can default when new liabilities are not paid. Adjust withholding or estimated payments for the current year.
  • Entering incorrect bank details: Verify the account and withdrawal date; a failed direct debit can produce fees or put the agreement at risk.
  • Stopping payments because a refund is expected: The IRS may apply the refund, but it does not automatically cancel scheduled installments.
  • Waiting for approval before paying anything: Pay what you can by the original due date and continue payments while a request is being processed, following IRS instructions.

Records to keep

  • Copies of Form 4868, Form 7004 or Form 9465 and electronic submission confirmations.
  • Payment receipts, confirmation numbers and bank statements showing extension and installment payments.
  • The IRS approval notice, plan terms, fee amount and any later modification or reinstatement notice.
  • Calculations supporting your estimated tax and records of withholding, estimated payments and credits.
  • Every filed return and proof that future estimated payments were made.

Key takeaways for the 2026 filing season

An extension protects filing time, not payment time. Individuals generally use Form 4868 (or an extension-designated payment) for filing relief and the Online Payment Agreement or Form 9465 for installments. A short-term plan has no setup fee and normally lasts no more than 180 days; online long-term setup fees listed by the IRS are $29 with direct debit and $69 without it, with reduced or waived fees for qualifying low-income taxpayers. Interest and applicable penalties continue under every option until the tax account is paid in full.
