Tax-loss harvesting vs. tax-gain harvesting: when each strategy helps

Tax-loss harvesting can help when realized losses offset gains or, within federal limits, other income. Tax-gain harvesting can make sense when a sale fits a taxpayer’s applicable lower capital-gains rate and the investor wants to establish a higher basis. Neither strategy is automatically beneficial: the result depends on taxable income, filing status, holding periods, other sales, wash-sale exposure, investment objectives and what happens later.

This guide covers U.S. federal individual tax rules. The dollar thresholds below are for tax year 2025, not 2026. Check the Internal Revenue Service’s current instructions and forms for the year you file, and obtain advice for circumstances the general rules do not resolve.

What tax-loss harvesting and tax-gain harvesting actually mean

Tax-loss harvesting

Tax-loss harvesting is the deliberate sale of an investment for less than its adjusted basis so the loss becomes realized for tax purposes. The realized loss then enters the capital-gain-and-loss netting process. Selling does not make the loss disappear economically; it changes an unrealized decline into a reportable transaction and may also change the portfolio’s market exposure.

A loss is generally measured as the amount realized on the sale minus the asset’s adjusted basis. Selling for $7,000 an investment with a $10,000 adjusted basis produces a $3,000 capital loss before considering commissions, fees and any applicable adjustments. The tax character also matters: a position held for one year or less is generally short-term, while one held for more than one year is generally long-term. The Internal Revenue Service explains these basis and holding-period rules in Topic 409, Capital gains and losses.

Tax-gain harvesting

Tax-gain harvesting is a planning label, not a named strategy defined by the IRS. It generally means deliberately selling an appreciated investment to realize a capital gain, sometimes followed by buying the investment or a similar exposure again at a higher purchase price. That new purchase can create a higher basis for a later sale, but it does not guarantee lifetime tax savings.

A gain is a taxable disposition governed by the taxpayer’s complete return. A gain that appears to fit a favorable rate can be pushed into a higher rate by other taxable income, additional gains or the holding period. Selling can also create transaction costs, alter investment exposure and affect other tax calculations. A repurchase does not erase the gain from the first sale.

How federal capital-gains tax is calculated

The basic calculation starts with each sale’s amount realized and adjusted basis. The difference is a gain or loss. Investors generally separate short-term and long-term transactions, then apply the federal netting rules to determine whether the result is a net short-term capital gain, net long-term capital gain, or a combination of gains and losses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Net short-term capital gains are generally taxed at ordinary-income rates. Net capital gains may qualify for lower rates depending on taxable income. As the IRS states in Topic 409: "If you have a net capital gain, a lower tax rate may apply to the gain than the tax rate that applies to your ordinary income." The sentence describes a possible rate difference, not a promise that every gain receives a lower rate.

If total allowable capital losses exceed total capital gains, the excess generally can be deducted against other income only up to $3,000 for most filing statuses, or $1,500 for married taxpayers filing separately. Unused losses may be carried to later years under the applicable rules. A loss that is disallowed under the wash-sale rules is not immediately available for this netting calculation.

2025 federal 0% net-capital-gains thresholds

For tax years beginning in 2025, IRS Topic 409 lists a 0% rate on net capital gains when taxable income is no more than the following amounts:

Filing status 2025 taxable-income ceiling for the 0% net capital-gains rate
Single $48,350
Married filing separately $48,350
Married filing jointly $96,700
Qualifying surviving spouse $96,700
Head of household $64,750

The 15% band extends above each 0% threshold to filing-status-specific limits, and the 20% rate applies to the extent taxable income exceeds the applicable 15% ceiling. The thresholds above do not establish those upper dollar limits, so consult the IRS table for the relevant filing year.

These are 2025 figures. They must not be presented as 2026 thresholds. Rate eligibility depends on taxable income and the net capital-gain calculation, not simply on sale proceeds or gross income. A taxpayer with $40,000 of wages can have a different result from another taxpayer with the same wages if deductions, filing status, other income or other gains differ.

When should you consider harvesting an investment loss?

When realized gains are available to offset

The clearest use is a year in which you already have, or expect to have, capital gains. A realized loss can reduce the net amount exposed to capital-gains tax. The holding period and character of each transaction still matter because short-term and long-term items are netted under specific ordering rules.

For example, suppose a hypothetical investor realizes a $5,000 gain and then sells another holding for a $3,000 allowable loss. The loss can reduce the net capital gain to $2,000 before other transactions and tax calculations. That arithmetic does not determine the final tax bill; the investor must include every relevant sale and the rest of the return.

When losses exceed gains but the annual deduction is useful

If allowable losses are larger than gains, up to $3,000 generally can reduce other income in a year ($1,500 for married filing separately). The remainder is carried forward under the applicable rules. This can be useful, but it is not a reason to sell an otherwise suitable investment without considering the market and portfolio consequences.

When a replacement exposure can be chosen without a wash sale

A loss is not immediately usable if the wash-sale rules apply. Before selling, review purchases of the same or substantially identical security in all relevant accounts and by other household members. If you can maintain an appropriate investment exposure with a genuinely different security while respecting the rules, the loss may remain available; determining whether securities are substantially identical can require professional analysis.

When the investment decision independently supports a sale

Tax treatment should reinforce, not replace, an investment decision. A deteriorated thesis, an unwanted concentration or a need to rebalance may justify selling. The tax loss can then be part of the timing analysis. A tax deduction alone does not establish that selling or buying a replacement is suitable.

When does tax-gain harvesting make sense?

When the applicable rate is genuinely favorable

Gain harvesting is most often considered when a taxpayer’s projected taxable income leaves room in a lower capital-gains band. For 2025, a taxpayer whose taxable income remains at or below the filing-status threshold in the table may have a 0% rate on net capital gains. A gain does not automatically qualify: the sale itself increases taxable income, and other income or gains can move part of the net gain into the 15% or 20% band.

To test the idea, project taxable income before the sale, add the expected net gain, account for deductions and other transactions, and determine which portion of the gain falls in each applicable band. Use the tax year’s current IRS thresholds rather than relying on the 2025 figures for a later return.

When a higher basis fits the long-term plan

Selling an appreciated position and buying it again can replace an old, low basis with a new basis closer to the current market price. If the asset later rises and is sold, the post-repurchase gain may be smaller than it would have been with the old basis. The overall result depends on future prices, future tax rates, holding periods, transaction costs and whether the investor actually retains the replacement investment.

Basis is an accounting starting point, not a guaranteed tax benefit. If a future sale occurs at a loss, the higher basis can increase that loss; if the position never rises, the earlier tax paid to realize the gain may not have produced an advantage.

When an estate or other future event changes the analysis

A taxpayer may have reasons beyond this year’s rate, such as simplifying records or coordinating a planned sale. Future basis treatment can differ depending on the eventual disposition and the taxpayer’s circumstances. Do not assume that realizing gains now is superior to holding an asset for another purpose or that a future basis adjustment is certain in every situation.

Tax-loss harvesting vs. tax-gain harvesting: the decision axes

Question Why it matters for a loss Why it matters for a gain
What is your projected taxable income and filing status? It determines how much offset is useful and whether excess losses reach the $3,000 or $1,500 deduction limit. It determines whether any portion of the net gain fits the applicable 0%, 15% or 20% band.
What is each holding period? Short-term and long-term losses enter the netting process by character. Short-term gains generally face ordinary-income rates; long-term gains may receive preferential rates.
What other gains and losses will be realized? Existing gains can make a loss immediately useful; other losses may reduce the amount used this year. Other gains can consume lower-rate room and increase the rate on the harvested gain.
Could the wash-sale rules apply? A purchase of substantially identical securities in the applicable period can defer the loss and adjust replacement-share basis. The wash-sale rules concern losses, but a repurchase after a gain still creates a new investment and new basis that must be tracked.
What happens to basis after the transaction? A disallowed loss can be added to replacement-share basis; an allowed loss reduces the net gain or may create a deductible excess. A repurchased position generally starts with its new purchase basis, while the original gain remains taxable in the sale year.
Does the trade fit the portfolio? Selling can change diversification and risk even if the tax result is favorable. Selling and repurchasing can create costs, a period out of the market and a different exposure.

How to evaluate and execute a tax-loss harvest

  1. Inventory every taxable account. List the security, quantity, purchase dates, adjusted basis, current value, holding period and unrealized gain or loss. Include relevant purchases outside the account where the sale will occur.
  2. Project the complete tax picture. Add expected wages, interest, dividends, business income, deductions and all planned capital transactions. Separate short-term and long-term items and estimate whether losses will offset gains or exceed them.
  3. Identify the tax purpose. Decide whether the goal is to offset a particular gain, use part of the annual deduction against other income, or carry a loss forward. A loss with no near-term use can still have value, but its timing should be weighed against market risk.
  4. Check wash-sale exposure before placing the order. Search for purchases of the same or substantially identical security in brokerage, retirement and other relevant accounts, including household activity. Do not rely only on the selling broker’s year-end statement.
  5. Choose a replacement only after the tax check. If maintaining market exposure matters, assess whether the proposed replacement is sufficiently different under the facts. If the replacement question is unclear, pause and ask a tax professional.
  6. Place and document the sale. Save the trade confirmation, quantity, date, proceeds, fees and basis. Record any replacement purchase and the reasoning for the security selected.
  7. Recalculate after settlement and at year-end. Confirm the broker’s reported basis, look for transactions in other accounts and update the projected netting calculation. A late-year purchase can change whether a loss is immediately allowable.
  8. Report the transaction correctly. Securities sales are generally reported on Form 8949 and Schedule D as appropriate. Carry forward any unused loss using the applicable year’s forms and instructions.

How to evaluate and execute a tax-gain harvest

  1. Establish the holding period and basis. Confirm whether the position is short-term or long-term and obtain the adjusted basis rather than relying on an approximate purchase price.
  2. Project taxable income before the sale. Include salary, retirement distributions, interest, dividends, business income, deductions and other capital transactions. Use the thresholds for the year being filed.
  3. Add the proposed net gain. Estimate proceeds, subtract basis and selling costs, then recompute taxable income and the net capital-gain bands. A sale can move part of the gain out of the 0% band.
  4. Decide whether a repurchase is necessary. If the objective is a higher basis or continued exposure, compare the cost and timing of repurchasing with alternatives. The original gain remains reportable even if the asset is bought again.
  5. Account for investment and cash-flow effects. Consider bid-ask spreads, commissions, market movement while out of the position and the risk that the price changes between sale and repurchase.
  6. Keep complete records. Retain the original sale confirmation, the new purchase confirmation, basis calculations and the projected tax-rate analysis.
  7. Report the sale. Enter the transaction on Form 8949 and Schedule D as appropriate, using the applicable tax-year instructions.

Wash-sale rules: the main trap in loss harvesting

The wash-sale rules can disallow a loss when substantially identical securities are acquired within the applicable period around the loss sale. The disallowed amount is generally added to the basis of replacement shares, which defers rather than immediately eliminates the loss. IRS Publication 550 illustrates this basis adjustment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The timing window is not limited to a single account. Review purchases before and after the sale in taxable and other accounts, and consider activity by a spouse or other household member where the rules apply. Broker reporting may not reflect every transaction elsewhere. A statement that shows a loss does not by itself prove that the loss is currently deductible.

Because “substantially identical” is fact-dependent, do not assume that changing a ticker symbol, fund family or account automatically avoids the rule. Conversely, do not assume that every investment with a similar market objective is substantially identical. Use the current IRS instructions and professional advice for edge cases.

Basis, future sales and why a tax result is not a guaranteed saving

Basis determines the gain or loss on a later sale. An allowed loss reduces current net gains or may contribute to the limited deduction against other income. A disallowed wash-sale loss is incorporated into replacement-share basis. A gain harvest generally creates a new, higher basis only if the investor actually buys a replacement position; the higher basis then affects the result of a future disposition.

Future prices and tax circumstances can reverse the expected advantage. A harvested gain may be taxed at a rate that later turns out to be higher than anticipated. A harvested loss may be followed by a market rebound, leaving the investor with a different replacement price or missed exposure. Holding period can also change when a future gain is short-term or long-term. Evaluate the transaction across the intended holding period rather than judging it solely by the current year’s tax line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filing and recordkeeping requirements

Investors generally report securities sales on Form 8949 and Schedule D, as appropriate. Basis records are essential because the basis is used to compute each gain or loss, and wash-sale adjustments can change the basis reported for replacement shares.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Treating gross income as the 0% test

The 0% thresholds apply to taxable income and net capital gains, not gross income or sale proceeds. Recalculate after deductions and all other income.

Assuming every long-term gain is taxed at 0%

Long-term treatment can qualify for preferential rates, but the applicable rate depends on the complete return. The 2025 0% thresholds are ceilings, not automatic exemptions for every sale.

Ignoring short-term character

A position held for one year or less generally produces a short-term gain or loss. Short-term gains generally use ordinary-income rates, so a quick gain harvest can be much less favorable than a long-term calculation suggests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying the same security too soon after a loss

A replacement purchase can trigger a wash-sale adjustment and defer the loss. Search all relevant accounts before and after the sale.

Using a tax loss as the sole reason to sell

The tax deduction is only one part of the decision. Selling can change diversification, risk and market exposure; a replacement must be evaluated as an investment, not merely as a tax substitute.

Assuming a higher basis guarantees future savings

A new basis changes the arithmetic of a later sale, but future prices, rates and holding periods determine whether that change helps.

Relying on a broker’s wash-sale indicator as the complete answer

Broker systems may not see transactions in another account or by another person covered by the rules. Use the broker data as a starting point, then reconcile it with your own records.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have you identified every gain, loss, basis and holding period expected for the tax year?
  • Is the transaction intended to offset a gain, use the annual loss deduction or manage a future basis?
  • For a gain, does the projected taxable income still leave room in the desired rate band after the sale?
  • For a loss, have you checked the applicable wash-sale period across all relevant accounts?
  • Will the sale and any replacement preserve an investment allocation you are comfortable holding?
  • Have you included transaction costs, market movement risk and the possibility that future tax circumstances differ?
  • Can you document the basis, trade dates, proceeds, replacement purchases and carryovers for Form 8949 and Schedule D?

Loss harvesting is generally most defensible when an allowable loss can usefully offset gains or fit within the annual deduction and the investment decision supports selling. Gain harvesting may be worth considering when the complete return leaves room in a favorable applicable rate and a higher basis fits the broader plan. The 2025 IRS thresholds provide a reference point, not a personalized recommendation; verify the tax year, filing status and all surrounding transactions before acting.
