TATA AIG MediCare Premier is an indemnity-and-benefit health insurance policy with individual and family-floater options, lifelong renewal, and sum-insured choices from ₹5 lakh to ₹3 crore in the current proposal form. It combines hospitalisation cover with maternity, OPD, high-end diagnostics, wellness and a planned-treatment benefit overseas. For AY 2026–27, an individual or family-floater premium paid on or after 22 September 2025 should generally carry zero GST, while Section 80D deductions depend on the insured family members, senior-citizen status and the tax regime you use.
The important limitations are waiting periods, benefit sub-limits, documentation rules and the fact that overseas treatment is not unrestricted travel medical insurance. Check the policy schedule and obtain a live quote before relying on any benefit or price.

What is TATA AIG MediCare Premier and who can buy it?
MediCare Premier (UIN TATHLIP26052V052526) is available for adults entering from age 18 through a maximum entry age of 65. Children may enter from 91 days, subject to conditions for ages 91 days to five years. You can choose a one-, two- or three-year term, insure individuals or a family floater, and renew for life under the policy terms.
The current proposal form lists sum-insured options from ₹5 lakh to ₹3 crore. Premium depends on the selected sum insured, the insured persons’ ages, the geographic rating zone and the family combination. A revised product applies to new policies from 29 April 2025; the repricing notice says benefits and coverage remained the same, but premiums changed. There is no single reliable public Premier premium, so use a current quote rather than an old price example.

What does the policy cover in India?
The policy combines broad hospitalisation cover with named benefits. Actual admissibility, limits and sub-limits are governed by the schedule and wording.
| Benefit | How it works |
|---|---|
| Inpatient hospitalisation | Medical expenses for admissible hospital admissions, subject to the chosen sum insured and policy conditions. |
| Day-care procedures | Listed procedures that do not require a 24-hour stay can be covered under the day-care terms. |
| Pre- and post-hospitalisation | Pre-hospitalisation is covered for up to 60 days. Post-hospitalisation is 90 days for sums insured up to ₹50 lakh and 200 days for ₹75 lakh to ₹3 crore. |
| Organ donor and domiciliary treatment | Named expenses for organ donation and eligible treatment at home are covered when the wording’s medical and documentation conditions are met. |
| AYUSH, ambulance and consumables | Eligible AYUSH treatment, ambulance charges and specified consumables are included, subject to policy limits and necessity rules. |
| Restore benefit | A restore feature can replenish cover for later admissible claims, but restored sum insured cannot be used for the overseas Global Cover for Planned Hospitalization benefit. |
| Maternity | Covered only after the required continuous-coverage waiting period and within the applicable maternity terms. |
| OPD and high-end diagnostics | Consultations, pharmacy, dental OPD and specified high-end diagnostic tests have separate waiting periods and annual limits. |
| Emergency air ambulance | Available as a named emergency benefit subject to the policy’s conditions and limits. |
| Home care and physiotherapy | Home-care benefits apply to plans with ₹75 lakh or more sum insured. Where available, those plans can receive up to 15 home physiotherapy sessions. |
| Wellness services | Named wellness services are available according to the policy wording and any stated usage limits. |
Does MediCare Premier cover treatment abroad?
Yes, but only through Global Cover for Planned Hospitalization. The diagnosis must be made in India, and the insured person must travel abroad specifically for treatment. It is not blanket travel insurance for emergencies, routine care or any overseas medical expense.
What the overseas benefit pays
- Eligible inpatient and day-care medical expenses abroad are reimbursed up to the available sum insured.
- Cashless handling may be arranged case by case; it is not automatic for every foreign provider.
- Foreign invoices are converted to rupees using the RBI exchange rate on the invoice date, or the next published rate when an invoice-date rate is unavailable.
- Only the remaining basic sum insured plus no-claim bonus is available. Restored sum insured is excluded.
- For sums insured above ₹50 lakh, reasonable and customary visa-service fees connected with the insured’s medical treatment are also covered.
Who cannot use Global Cover?
The benefit is unavailable when the policyholder or any insured person is a foreign national, non-resident Indian (NRI) or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI). A resident Indian can also opt out at proposal or renewal. A 2% premium discount is described for cases in which the global benefit is unavailable.

How to prepare a planned-treatment claim abroad
- Obtain medical records proving that the diagnosis was made in India.
- Confirm that the proposed treatment is planned inpatient or eligible day-care treatment and obtain the insurer’s claim instructions before travel.
- Keep the passport, visa, overseas hospital documents, itemised invoices, payment evidence and any records requested for claim assessment.
- Submit the claim under the policy’s overseas process. If approved, the insurer applies the RBI exchange-rate rule and checks the remaining basic sum insured and no-claim bonus.
What are the waiting periods and sub-limits?
| Feature | Waiting period or limit |
|---|---|
| Initial illness waiting period | 30 days from inception; covered accidents are excepted. |
| Specified diseases and procedures | 24 months of continuous coverage. |
| Pre-existing diseases and direct complications | 24 months from first inception, subject to declaration, acceptance and any portability credit. |
| Maternity | Three years of continuous coverage. |
| OPD consultation and pharmacy | Starts after two continuous years. Annual limits are ₹5,000 (up to ₹50 lakh), ₹7,500 (₹75 lakh), ₹10,000 (₹1 crore), ₹15,000 (₹2 crore) and ₹20,000 (₹3 crore). |
| OPD dental | Starts after two years, with annual limits ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 across the same sum-insured tiers. |
| High-end diagnostics | ₹25,000 for sums insured up to ₹50 lakh; ₹50,000 for ₹75 lakh to ₹3 crore. |
These are continuous-coverage requirements. A break in renewal can affect eligibility, so confirm how portability credits and any underwriting decision apply to your specific policy.
What is excluded or restricted?
Read the schedule for permanent exclusions and selected limits. The wording excludes investigation-only admissions, rest cure and rehabilitation, treatment that is not medically necessary, specified medical and non-medical items, war risks, nuclear or biological risks, and claims that fail the benefit’s admissibility or documentation requirements. A hospital bill alone does not establish coverage; the treatment must satisfy the policy definition, waiting period and necessity tests.
Is GST charged on MediCare Premier for AY 2026–27?
The Department of Financial Services states that GST on individual life and individual health insurance, including family-floater policies, was reduced from 18% to zero effective 22 September 2025. Therefore, an individual or family-floater MediCare Premier instalment paid on or after that date should generally show no GST line, provided the policy is genuinely within that category and the applicable time-of-supply rule is met.

Group insurance and employer-sponsored group health insurance remain subject to 18%. For instalment premiums, the rate follows the date each instalment is paid; a payment made before 22 September 2025 can still attract 18%. Retain the premium receipt, verify the payment date and check whether the policy is individual/family-floater or group cover.
How much Section 80D deduction can you claim for AY 2026–27?
| Payment category | Maximum deduction |
|---|---|
| Self, spouse and dependent children | ₹25,000; ₹50,000 when any person in this group is a senior citizen. |
| Parents | ₹25,000; ₹50,000 when any parent is a senior citizen. |
| Preventive health check-up | ₹5,000, included within the relevant limit rather than added to it. |
For example, a taxpayer with no senior citizen in the self-and-family group and a senior-citizen parent could potentially claim ₹25,000 plus ₹50,000, or ₹75,000, subject to the statutory conditions and payment rules. The Income Tax Department’s AY 2026–27 guidance asks taxpayers claiming the deduction to provide the insurer’s name, policy number and health-insurance amount.
The prospectus says the premium qualifies for Section 80D, while noting that tax law can change. The available AY 2026–27 guidance does not establish whether this deduction is available under your chosen old or new tax regime, so confirm the regime treatment from current provisions or a qualified tax adviser before filing.
Is MediCare Premier worth it?
It can suit a family that wants a high maximum sum insured, maternity and OPD options, and a defined route for planned treatment outside India. The value depends on whether you can accept the waiting periods, sub-limits and exclusions rather than on the headline hospital count alone.

Check these points before buying
- Choose a sum insured that leaves room after deductibles, co-payments or other schedule limits, not merely the cheapest premium.
- Ask whether your preferred hospitals are currently network providers; the 2026 prospectus reports more than 11,700 hospitals, but network lists change and should be verified directly before admission.
- Confirm that maternity, OPD, dental and high-end diagnostic limits match your expected use.
- If overseas treatment matters, confirm eligibility, the India-diagnosis requirement, cashless arrangements and the exclusion of restored cover.
- Compare premiums using the same ages, zone, family composition, term and sum insured. A quote from the revised post-29-April-2025 product is more relevant than an older illustration.
What should you do before paying or filing?
- Read the proposal form and disclose existing conditions accurately.
- Check the schedule for waiting periods, permanent exclusions, sub-limits and the chosen sum insured.
- Save the policy document, proposal form, premium receipt and renewal records.
- For a planned admission, confirm network status and pre-authorisation requirements with the insurer and hospital.
- For tax filing, retain the receipt and record the insurer name, policy number, amount paid and payment date.
MediCare Premier is strongest when its global-treatment rules, domestic limits and tax treatment are checked before purchase rather than assumed from the product name or a hospital-list figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a restored sum insured pay for planned treatment overseas?
No. The overseas benefit can use only the remaining basic sum insured and no-claim bonus. Any amount restored after an earlier claim is specifically outside Global Cover for Planned Hospitalization.
What happens if my health-policy instalment was paid before 22 September 2025?
The zero-GST change does not retrospectively remove tax from an earlier payment. An instalment paid before 22 September 2025 can still carry 18%, so use the payment date on the receipt when checking the invoice.

Can I combine the Section 80D limits for myself and my parents?
Yes, the law sets separate limits for the self-and-family group and for parents. For instance, ₹25,000 for a non-senior self-and-family group plus ₹50,000 for senior-citizen parents can produce a ₹75,000 combined maximum, subject to eligibility and regime rules.

Is the reported 11,700-plus hospital network permanent?
No. It is the count reported in the 2026 prospectus, and hospitals can be added or removed. Confirm current cashless availability with the hospital and insurer before admission.
