Target-Date Funds vs. DIY Index Funds for Retirement Saving

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

Short answer: A target-date fund (TDF) is usually the better choice when you want one diversified holding that automatically changes its stock-and-bond mix and rebalances. A DIY index-fund portfolio can be cheaper and more precisely tailored, but you must select the allocation, keep it on target and stay disciplined during market stress. Compare the actual funds in your retirement plan—not just the labels—along with the glide path, every layer of fees, your retirement timing and the rest of your household finances.

What you are comparing

How a target-date fund works

A target-date fund combines several investments in one portfolio. You choose a fund named for an approximate retirement year, such as 2055, and the manager handles the asset allocation and rebalancing. Most TDFs begin with a larger stock allocation and gradually add bonds or other relatively defensive holdings as the target date nears. This changing mix is called the glide path.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The target year is not a promise that you will retire then, nor is it a guarantee of a particular account balance or income. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) states that TDFs can lose money and “do not guarantee that you will have sufficient retirement income at the target date.” A fund may also continue changing its allocation after the target year.

Many TDFs are funds of funds: the TDF owns other stock, bond and sometimes international funds. Others use a blend of index and actively managed holdings. The wrapper gives you convenience, but you still need to inspect what is inside it.

“To” and “through” glide paths

Two funds with the same year in their names can have materially different risk. A to glide path reaches its most conservative allocation around the target date. A through glide path keeps changing after that date, often because the manager assumes you will remain invested during retirement. Neither design is automatically correct; the choice depends on when you expect withdrawals and how much market risk you can tolerate.

The Department of Labor and the SEC both warn that same-date funds can differ in strategy, fees, glide path and post-date allocation. Read the prospectus and the current allocation schedule rather than inferring risk from the year alone.

How DIY index funds work

With a DIY approach, you choose separate index funds and decide the percentage in each. A total stock-market index fund can hold shares in thousands of companies, but a stock fund by itself is not a complete retirement portfolio: it does not provide bond exposure and may not include international stocks. A typical DIY menu might include a domestic total-market fund, an international fund and one or more bond index funds.

You set the target percentages, direct new contributions to maintain them and periodically rebalance. Rebalancing means restoring the portfolio to its intended allocation after market movements cause the percentages to drift. You also decide whether and how to change the mix as retirement approaches. The funds may be simple; the ongoing decisions are your responsibility.

Target-date fund versus DIY index funds at a glance

Decision area Target-date fund DIY index-fund portfolio
Initial setup Choose one fund with an approximate retirement year. Select several funds and set percentages.
Asset allocation Manager sets and changes the mix according to the fund’s glide path. You choose the mix and any changes.
Rebalancing Automatic inside the fund. You rebalance with contributions, exchanges or both.
Transparency Holdings and percentages are available, but you must look through the wrapper and underlying funds. Each holding and its percentage is visible in your account.
Customization Limited to the glide path and holdings selected by the provider. You can set a different stock, bond or international mix and coordinate across accounts.
Cost structure TDF expense ratio plus the expenses of underlying funds, where applicable, and any plan or account fees. Combined expense ratios of your funds plus plan or account fees.
Behavioral workload Lower day-to-day workload, although you still need to monitor suitability. Higher workload and a written process are essential for consistent execution.
Glide path Provider’s “to” or “through” design determines how risk changes. You create your own glide path, or keep one allocation until you deliberately change it.

Fees: compare the whole cost, not a single percentage

Small fee differences compound over decades. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin notes that even small differences in fees can translate into large differences in returns over time. Do not compare a TDF’s headline expense ratio with only one DIY fund’s ratio. A fair comparison includes every investment and account charge attached to each option.

Costs inside a target-date fund

  • TDF expense ratio: the operating cost of the overall fund.
  • Underlying-fund expenses: if the TDF owns other funds, their expenses are part of the portfolio’s economics, even when they are not displayed as a separate bill.
  • Plan-level charges: recordkeeping, administration or other fees that your employer plan allocates to participants.
  • Trading and implementation costs: not always presented as a simple percentage, but they can affect results.

Costs in a DIY portfolio

  • Expense ratios for every stock, international and bond index fund you hold.
  • Any transaction, account or advisory fee charged by the plan or brokerage.
  • Potential tax costs in a taxable account when you sell to rebalance; retirement-plan exchanges generally follow the plan’s tax rules, so check the account documents.
  • The opportunity cost of leaving contributions in cash or an unintended fund while you delay a rebalance.

Use the plan’s fee disclosure, each fund’s prospectus and the investment menu to calculate the annual dollar cost at your current balance. A cheaper DIY menu is not an advantage if you fail to maintain it; a somewhat more expensive TDF may be worthwhile if its automation prevents costly allocation mistakes.

Examine the glide path before choosing a year

The calendar year is only a starting point. Open the prospectus or glide-path chart and record the stock, bond and other allocations at several points: today, the target date, five to ten years before it, and the years after it. Check whether the fund reaches its most conservative mix at the target date (“to”) or later (“through”).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask what the fund is designed to do around the first withdrawal, not merely what it does on December 31 of the named year. Someone retiring early, delaying retirement, or planning a large purchase soon after retirement may need a different risk level than the default year suggests. A person with a pension or substantial guaranteed income may be able to tolerate more market exposure than a household relying almost entirely on the account, while a household with large stock holdings elsewhere may need less stock in the TDF.

There is no universally correct percentage. The relevant question is whether the fund’s path matches your ability and willingness to withstand losses while still meeting planned withdrawals.

How to evaluate a target-date fund in your plan

  1. Identify the legal fund and share class. Record the exact name, ticker, expense ratio and whether the plan offers an institutional or other lower-cost share class.
  2. Read the investment approach. Determine whether the portfolio is index-based, actively managed or blended, and identify the underlying funds.
  3. Map the complete glide path. Note stock, bond, international and any other allocations before, at and after the target date.
  4. Find the landing allocation. The most conservative mix may occur at the target date or years later. Confirm what happens after you reach retirement.
  5. Review fees in two places. Use the TDF prospectus for fund expenses and your workplace plan disclosure for administrative or account charges.
  6. Test the date against your plan. Compare the named year with when withdrawals are likely to begin, not simply your age or the year you hope to stop working.
  7. Check the fund against your other assets. Include other retirement accounts, taxable investments, pensions and expected Social Security when judging total household risk.
  8. Decide whether the automation is valuable. If you will not reliably rebalance a DIY portfolio, the TDF’s process may justify its additional cost.

How to build and maintain a DIY index-fund portfolio

  1. List every account and income source. Include workplace plans, individual retirement accounts, taxable assets, pensions and your expected Social Security benefit. This prevents one account from being judged in isolation.
  2. Write a target allocation. Set percentages for domestic stocks, international stocks and bonds (or the categories available in your plan). Explain in writing why the mix fits your time horizon and risk tolerance.
  3. Select broad, low-cost index options. Confirm what each fund owns, its benchmark, expense ratio, turnover and any restrictions. A single domestic stock index is not equivalent to a diversified portfolio across asset classes.
  4. Choose a rebalancing rule. For example, rebalance on a fixed annual date or when an asset class moves a predetermined percentage away from its target. The exact rule is yours; consistency matters more than precision.
  5. Use contributions first. Direct new money to underweight categories before selling anything. This can reduce trading and, in taxable accounts, may reduce realized gains.
  6. Rebalance deliberately. When the rule is triggered, exchange or sell and buy according to the written percentages. Do not change the plan simply because the recent winner feels safer.
  7. Define a retirement glide path. Decide in advance whether and when you will reduce stocks, and document the reason. Do not improvise after a market decline.
  8. Review after major changes. Revisit the policy after a job change, inheritance, pension decision, change in retirement date or major shift in spending needs.

The operational risk is real: a theoretically cheaper portfolio can become expensive if contributions go to the wrong fund, rebalancing is postponed for years or you sell stocks during a downturn. A one-page investment policy statement can turn a set of funds into a repeatable process.

Fit the choice to your whole household plan

Retirement allocation is a household decision, not a label attached to one account. Combine the TDF or DIY holdings with other retirement accounts, taxable investments, pensions and expected Social Security. For example, a bond-heavy account may leave the household underexposed to growth if a large pension already supplies stable income; the same account may be prudent for a household with no guaranteed income and near-term withdrawals.

Coordinate accounts before changing anything. You might hold a broad stock allocation in one plan and bonds in another, but only if the combined percentages meet your written target and the account rules permit the arrangement. A TDF is less customizable across accounts because its internal mix applies to every dollar in that fund; DIY funds make cross-account coordination easier but require more bookkeeping.

Behavioral trade-offs matter as much as fund design

Why automation can help

Automatic rebalancing removes a decision that many investors postpone. Contributions remain invested according to the fund’s process, and the glide path changes without a new trade from you. Fidelity investment-product director Angus Stewart describes TDFs as an all-in-one option intended to help people stay invested and disciplined toward their goals. That benefit is practical, not theoretical, when your alternative is an unfinished or frequently changing DIY plan.

Why control can help

DIY investing lets you see every holding and set a risk level that differs from a provider’s default. You can keep more or less international exposure, coordinate a spouse’s accounts, or create a glide path that reflects a planned part-time career. The price of that control is the obligation to execute the plan during both calm and volatile markets.

Stress-test your behavior

Before choosing, ask what you would do after a sharp stock-market decline. If you would abandon the written DIY allocation, an automated TDF may produce a better real-world result even if its expense ratio is higher. Conversely, if you understand allocation, follow a rebalancing rule and want to customize around other assets, paying for a one-size-fits-all glide path may not add value.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Assuming the year determines risk. Same-date funds can have different stock exposure and post-date policies. Correction: compare the actual glide-path chart and prospectus.
  • Treating the target year as a guarantee. The fund cannot promise a balance or retirement income, and losses are possible. Correction: use the year only as an approximate planning marker.
  • Comparing a TDF with one stock index. A TDF normally contains bonds and often international holdings. Correction: compare it with a complete DIY allocation that serves the same purpose.
  • Looking only at the expense ratio. Plan administration and underlying-fund expenses also matter. Correction: calculate total annual costs from the prospectus and plan disclosure.
  • Ignoring the post-retirement phase. A “through” fund may keep changing for years after the named date. Correction: inspect the allocation and withdrawal assumptions after the target date.
  • Letting a DIY portfolio drift. Market gains can quietly change your risk level. Correction: set a calendar or tolerance-band rule and follow it.
  • Changing strategy during market stress. Selling after a decline can lock in losses and break the plan. Correction: make allocation changes only under the conditions written in advance.
  • Forgetting other assets. The fund may look conservative or aggressive only because you viewed one account. Correction: calculate the household-wide allocation, including pensions and expected Social Security.

When each approach is usually the better fit

A target-date fund is often suitable when:

  • You want one diversified holding and do not want to manage several funds.
  • Your plan’s TDF has a competitive total cost and a glide path you understand.
  • Your expected retirement date is reasonably represented by the fund year.
  • You value automatic rebalancing and are unlikely to maintain a DIY policy consistently.

DIY index funds are often suitable when:

  • You want visibility and control over each asset class and percentage.
  • You understand asset allocation and will use a written rebalancing rule.
  • You need to coordinate several accounts or a nonstandard retirement timeline.
  • Your plan offers broad total-market, international and bond index funds at a materially lower combined cost.

These are fit tests, not guarantees. A TDF can be too aggressive, too conservative or too expensive for a particular investor; a DIY portfolio can be excellent on paper and poorly executed in practice.

A practical decision process

  1. Start with the plan menu. Gather the TDF prospectus, fee disclosure and every relevant index-fund fact sheet.
  2. Write down your retirement date range. Use the likely start of withdrawals, not only the date you might leave your job.
  3. Calculate household exposure. Add other accounts and guaranteed income sources before deciding how much risk this account should carry.
  4. Compare like with like. Match the TDF with a DIY portfolio containing comparable stock, international and bond exposure.
  5. Compare total annual cost. Include fund expenses and plan-level fees; identify any one-time or account-specific charges.
  6. Choose the process you will actually follow. Select the TDF if automation is the stronger safeguard; select DIY only if you will document and maintain it.
  7. Schedule a review. Recheck the choice after major life changes and at least when your retirement timing or withdrawal plan changes.

Bottom line for retirement savers

Neither structure wins for everyone. A target-date fund trades some control and potentially some cost for diversification, automatic rebalancing and a professionally managed glide path. DIY index funds trade your time and discipline for transparency, customization and the possibility of lower combined expenses. Choose the option whose actual holdings, glide path, fees and maintenance demands fit your complete household plan—and then keep the process consistent.
