A target-date fund puts your retirement portfolio, automatic rebalancing, and an age-based shift toward bonds under one fund. A do-it-yourself (DIY) ETF portfolio lets you choose the funds and percentages yourself, but you must design, monitor, and rebalance it. Neither is automatically cheaper, safer, or more profitable. The right choice depends on the allocation you need, the fees on the actual funds available to you, and whether you will maintain the portfolio consistently.
The target year in a fund’s name is only a starting point. Two funds labeled for the same year can have different stock and bond mixes, glide paths, underlying holdings, risks, and expenses. Compare those details before deciding.

What a target-date fund does
A target-date fund is generally a professionally managed fund of funds. It owns underlying stock, bond, and sometimes other funds, then combines them into a portfolio designed for an expected goal date, such as the year you expect to retire. The adviser selects the allocation, rebalances it, and usually makes the mix more conservative as the target date approaches.
In a workplace retirement plan, a target-date fund can be a single investment choice. You select the fund whose year is closest to your expected retirement date, and the fund manager handles the internal trades. That convenience does not make the fund a personalized retirement plan or guarantee a particular account balance or income.

“To” and “through” glide paths
A fund’s glide path describes how its stock, bond, and other allocations change over time. A “to” fund generally reaches its more conservative allocation at the target date. A “through” fund continues changing its allocation after that date, because the manager assumes the investor will remain invested during retirement. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says “to” funds typically become more conservative earlier than “through” funds.
Neither design is inherently suitable for every investor. The important question is what the fund owns now, what it is intended to own at the target date, and what happens afterward. Read the fund’s prospectus and shareholder report rather than inferring the risk from the year alone.
What a DIY ETF portfolio does
A DIY portfolio is a collection of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that you select and combine. You decide how much to hold in stocks and bonds, which regions and market segments to include, and when to change the percentages. ETFs can make broad exposure available in a single trade, but the ETF label does not guarantee diversification. A narrowly focused sector, industry, country, or thematic ETF can leave you concentrated in a small part of the market.

You also decide how the portfolio will be maintained. That means setting a rebalancing rule, directing new contributions, reviewing whether the funds still match the plan, and checking how the portfolio interacts with other retirement accounts and taxable investments. The strategy can be straightforward, but the responsibility remains yours unless you use a separate automated service.
Target-date funds and DIY ETFs compared
| Decision axis | Target-date fund | DIY ETF portfolio | What to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allocation choice | An adviser selects and manages the allocation under the fund’s strategy. | You select the ETFs and the percentages. | Whether the desired stock, bond, and geographic mix is available and suitable. |
| Change over time | Usually follows a glide path that becomes more conservative near or after the target date. | Changes only when you change it or use a separate automated service. | The allocation now, at the target date, and after that date. |
| Rebalancing | Performed inside the fund. | You set a method and carry it out. | How much time and discipline ongoing maintenance will require. |
| Diversification | Often achieved through underlying funds, but the strategy and holdings still need inspection. | Depends on the breadth and overlap of the ETFs you select. | Whether the holdings cover intended asset classes without unintended concentration. |
| Fees | The fund’s expenses plus expenses of underlying funds may apply. | ETF expenses plus account, trading, and other applicable costs may apply. | Current prospectuses and account terms, not assumptions about which approach is cheaper. |
| Control | You have less control over the underlying allocation decisions. | You control the components and weights. | Whether control will help you follow a plan or encourage frequent changes. |
| Simplicity | Often one-fund implementation. | Multiple decisions and continuing oversight. | Which approach you can maintain consistently. |
These are structural differences, not promises of a better return. Available funds, account rules, tax treatment, and your behavior can change the outcome.
How to evaluate a target-date fund
1. Confirm the date and your actual horizon
Start with the year you expect to need the money, not simply your birth year or a default selected by a plan. The target date is a planning reference, not a deadline at which all risk disappears. If you expect to retire earlier, work longer, or use the account for a different goal, a fund with a different year may be more relevant.

2. Map the glide path
Find the fund’s current allocation and its stated allocation at the target date. Then find out whether it is a “to” or “through” design and how the mix changes after the target year. Compare the stock, bond, and any other asset-class percentages with your tolerance for losses and your other retirement resources.
3. Inspect the underlying holdings
Open the prospectus and the latest shareholder report. Identify the underlying funds, their broad asset classes, geographic exposure, and any concentrations. A target-date fund can be broadly diversified, but “target date” does not eliminate the need to check what you own. Also consider whether your workplace plan or IRA already holds investments that duplicate the fund’s exposure.
4. Calculate the total expense picture
Read the prospectus fee table. In addition to the target-date fund’s own operating expenses, the portfolio may incur expenses charged by its underlying funds. The prospectus identifies these underlying expenses as Acquired Fund Fees and Expenses. Compare the current total expenses with the costs of the DIY ETFs and with any account-level charges.
5. Check the fund’s role in your whole plan
The fund manager sees only the assets inside the fund. You must consider other workplace accounts, IRAs, taxable investments, pensions, Social Security expectations, and near-term cash needs. Holding a target-date fund alongside several overlapping stock funds can make your overall allocation more aggressive or less diversified than the fund appears by itself.
How to build and maintain a DIY ETF portfolio
- Define the goal and time horizon. Write down when the money is likely to be used and whether withdrawals will begin at that date or continue for many years.
- Choose a strategic allocation. Set target percentages for stocks, bonds, and any other asset classes before selecting tickers. The allocation should reflect your time horizon and ability to tolerate losses, not a recent market move.
- Select broad ETFs that implement each target. Check the fund’s objective, index or strategy, geographic scope, holdings, and concentration. A fund covering one industry or a narrow slice of the market may need other funds to create a diversified portfolio.
- Look for overlap. Two ETFs can own many of the same companies or bonds even when their names differ. Review top holdings and asset-class exposure so that adding a second fund actually fills a gap instead of increasing an existing bet.
- Decide how contributions will be invested. You can direct new money to underweight assets or buy according to the target percentages. Write the rule down so that decisions do not change with headlines.
- Set a rebalancing method. Choose a calendar review or a percentage-band rule, then document what action you will take when the allocation drifts. Rebalancing restores the plan’s risk level; it is not a forecast of which asset class will perform next.
- Review the account and tax consequences. In a retirement account, trades may have different tax effects than in a taxable account, but trading can still involve commissions, spreads, or account restrictions. Investor.gov notes that rebalancing may create transaction fees or tax consequences depending on the account and transactions.
- Recheck the plan when circumstances change. Revisit the allocation when your goal, time horizon, risk tolerance, or other assets materially change. Do not change percentages merely because one holding recently outperformed.
Costs: compare the complete bill, not one expense ratio
A DIY ETF may display a low annual expense ratio, but that number is only one part of the cost. A target-date fund may charge its own operating expenses and the expenses of the underlying funds it owns. The opposite assumption—that a DIY portfolio is always cheaper—is just as unreliable.

Diversification and risk are determined by holdings
Diversification means spreading exposure across investments whose returns do not move in exactly the same way. It can reduce the damage from one company, industry, country, or asset class performing poorly, but it cannot remove market losses.
Target-date funds often obtain diversification through multiple underlying funds. Still, inspect the actual mix: a fund may have a higher or lower stock allocation than another fund with the same year, use different international exposure, or hold more bonds with different risks.
DIY portfolios can be highly diversified when they use broad funds across the intended stock and bond markets. They can also be unintentionally concentrated through narrow ETFs, duplicate holdings, or a large position in an employer’s stock outside the portfolio. Evaluate the combined exposure across all of your accounts rather than judging one ETF by its label.
Which approach may fit different investors?
A target-date fund may fit when
- You want one holding to provide a managed allocation and internal rebalancing.
- You are unlikely to monitor several funds or follow a written rebalancing rule.
- The fund’s glide path, underlying holdings, and total expenses fit your time horizon and risk tolerance.
- Your other investments do not create unwanted duplication or an overly aggressive overall allocation.
This is a conditional fit, not an individualized recommendation. A convenient fund can still be unsuitable if its glide path or costs conflict with your circumstances.
A DIY ETF portfolio may fit when
- You want control over asset classes, geographic exposure, and target percentages.
- You are willing to select broad funds, check for overlap, and maintain the allocation.
- You can follow a rebalancing process during both rising and falling markets.
- Your account offers suitable ETFs and the complete cost remains reasonable after trading and account charges.
Control is useful only if it helps you stick with a coherent plan. If it leads to frequent changes, market timing, or neglected rebalancing, the extra flexibility can become a liability.
A practical decision process
- List every investment account and income source. Include workplace plans, IRAs, taxable accounts, pensions, and expected government benefits. This prevents one fund from being judged in isolation.
- Write your intended stock and bond mix. State the percentages and the reason for them. Do not let a target year substitute for this risk decision.
- Compare the available target-date funds. For each candidate, record the current allocation, target-date allocation, “to” or “through” design, underlying funds, and total expenses from the latest documents.
- Design a comparable DIY version. Choose broad ETFs that cover the same intended asset classes, record each expense ratio, and identify account or trading costs.
- Test the maintenance burden. Ask who will direct contributions, monitor drift, and rebalance. If the answer is “I will,” put the dates and rules on a calendar before investing.
- Choose the implementation you can keep. The better option is the one whose allocation and costs fit your whole situation and whose maintenance process you can follow through a difficult market.

Correction: Compare glide paths, stock and bond percentages, underlying holdings, and total expenses. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance stated in its March 25, 2025 Investor Bulletin that funds sharing a target date can differ substantially in strategy, risk, glide path, and fees.
Assuming the target date guarantees income
Mistake: Treating the date as a promise that the account will provide enough money or a specific retirement paycheck.
Correction: Treat the fund as one investment component. Evaluate savings, withdrawal needs, other assets, and income sources separately. Registered mutual-fund and ETF target-date products do not guarantee sufficient retirement income or a specific income level.
Calling a narrow ETF diversified
Mistake: Buying several specialized ETFs and assuming the number of funds equals diversification.
Correction: Examine the holdings and the market exposure each fund supplies. Add funds to cover genuine gaps, not simply to increase the ticker count.

Reassess the target-date fund or DIY portfolio when your expected retirement date changes, your tolerance for losses changes, your household acquires substantial new assets, or the account’s available funds and fees change. A major change in pension expectations, employment, or planned withdrawals can also alter the allocation that makes sense.
Revisiting does not mean constantly trading. It means checking whether the original goal, risk level, holdings, and maintenance process still match your circumstances. The SEC’s target-date bulletin is staff investor education rather than a Commission rule or regulation, so use it alongside your plan documents, fund prospectuses, and account terms.
Bottom line for the decision
Choose a target-date fund when its actual glide path, holdings, and total costs fit your needs and you value one-fund management. Choose a DIY ETF portfolio when you want specific control and are prepared to select broad funds, monitor overlap, and rebalance. Compare the real investments available in your account; the target year and the ETF label alone cannot make the decision for you.
