Short answer: A target-date fund is usually the better default if you want a diversified portfolio that automatically rebalances and becomes more conservative as retirement nears. Choosing your own 401(k) funds can be better when you understand asset allocation, want precise control, and will maintain the portfolio over time. The right choice depends on the fund’s glide path and costs, your other retirement resources, and whether you will actually do the ongoing work.
What you are choosing between
Most 401(k) plans present this decision as a target-date fund or a menu of individual investment options. The two choices differ less in the account itself than in who makes the portfolio decisions.

How a target-date fund works
A target-date fund is a single diversified fund built around an expected retirement year, such as 2045 or 2065. The fund manager selects and combines underlying investments, sets the stock-and-bond mix, diversifies across asset classes, and rebalances as markets move. Over time, the allocation generally shifts from a higher stock allocation toward more bonds and cash.

The SEC describes the delegation plainly: “The managers of the fund then make all decisions about asset allocation, diversification, and rebalancing.” That convenience is the product’s central feature. You select the date that broadly matches your retirement horizon, make contributions, and the fund handles the portfolio maintenance.

How a self-directed 401(k) works
With a self-directed approach, you choose among the funds available in your employer’s plan and decide how much of each to hold. You are responsible for matching the mix to your time horizon and risk tolerance, diversifying across the investments the plan offers, checking fees and performance information, and rebalancing when the portfolio drifts from your targets.
The plan’s menu limits your choices. You cannot automatically buy every fund or asset class available in the wider market. Your job is to build the strongest diversified allocation that the plan actually makes available, rather than to assemble an idealized portfolio from investments you cannot access.
Why the target year is not a risk rating
The year in a fund’s name is an expected retirement date, not a promise about how much stock the fund owns. Two funds with the same date can have different asset allocations, glide paths, underlying funds, costs, and results. A 2050 fund from one provider may therefore be materially more aggressive or more conservative than another 2050 fund.

The glide path is the schedule for changing the allocation over time. Department of Labor guidance calls the shift “the TDF’s ‘glide path.’” Examine the allocation today, the planned changes in the years before retirement, and the fund’s most conservative mix.
Pay particular attention to whether the fund reaches its most conservative allocation at retirement or continues changing afterward:
- “To” retirement: the glide path reaches its intended endpoint around the target year.
- “Through” retirement: the fund continues moving toward its most conservative allocation for a period after the target year.
Neither design is automatically right. A “through” fund may keep more growth assets during the early retirement years, while a “to” fund may settle at its defensive allocation sooner. Your planned withdrawal date, flexibility to keep working, pension income, and tolerance for a market decline should determine which endpoint is more comfortable.
Look beyond the label
Read the fund’s prospectus or fact sheet for the actual stock, bond, and cash percentages and for the underlying holdings. A fund can include U.S. stocks, international stocks, investment-grade bonds, inflation-sensitive assets, or other categories. The diversification benefit comes from the combination of those holdings, not from the target year printed on the account screen.

What choosing your own funds demands
Self-direction is not simply selecting the funds with the highest recent returns. It is an investment policy that you must create and maintain.
Set an allocation before selecting funds
Start with a target percentage for each major asset class your plan offers. For example, you might decide on a stock percentage and a bond percentage, then divide the stock portion between domestic and international funds. The exact percentages must reflect your circumstances; the important discipline is to decide the mix before market headlines push you into a trade.
Check diversification at the portfolio level
Holding several funds does not guarantee diversification. Three funds that all own large U.S. companies can leave you concentrated in one market segment. Review each fund’s holdings and overlap, and make sure your combined portfolio covers the risks you intend to take.
Create a rebalancing rule
Market movements will change your actual percentages. A written rule—such as reviewing on a set schedule and trading when an allocation moves materially away from its target—keeps the process consistent. Rebalancing can require selling a fund that has recently performed well and buying one that has lagged, which is why a rule is easier to follow than a decision made during a stressful market.
Use the information the plan provides
Participant-directed plans must offer at least three diversified investment options with different risk-and-return characteristics and disclose fees under current IRS guidance. That requirement is a floor, not a recommendation that any particular option is suitable. Use the plan’s fee disclosure, fund fact sheets, and prospectuses to evaluate the available choices.
Target-date fund versus self-directed investing
| Decision factor | Target-date fund | Choosing your own funds |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the allocation? | The fund manager sets and adjusts the mix. | You set and adjust the mix. |
| Rebalancing | Automatic inside the fund. | You must monitor and rebalance. |
| Diversification | Bundled across the fund’s underlying holdings. | You must build and check diversification from the plan menu. |
| Glide path | Predefined by the fund; inspect its “to” or “through” design. | You create your own change in risk over time. |
| Control | Limited to selecting the fund and contribution destination. | Detailed control over asset classes and percentages. |
| Ongoing effort | Periodic review of suitability, glide path, and costs. | Regular allocation reviews, research, and rebalancing. |
| Cost questions | Total expense ratio, underlying-fund expenses, and plan charges. | Each fund’s expenses plus plan, administrative, and any brokerage-window charges. |
| Behavioral risk | Less temptation to trade in response to headlines. | More opportunity to change the plan impulsively. |
Compare costs correctly
Do not compare only the expense ratio shown beside a fund name. For a target-date fund, check the fund’s total annual expenses and the expenses charged by its underlying funds, then add any 401(k) administrative or recordkeeping charges allocated to your account.
For a self-directed portfolio, add the expenses of every fund you use and the same plan-level charges. If the plan offers a brokerage window, determine whether that feature adds a separate fee or transaction cost. A portfolio with several apparently inexpensive funds can cost more than one target-date fund once all layers are included.

The SEC’s March 25, 2025 Investor Bulletin advises comparing total costs and examining the full glide path and the most conservative allocation. Fees reduce returns in every market environment, but a lower fee does not compensate for a portfolio that is badly diversified or unsuitable for your risk capacity.

- Identify your actual retirement horizon. Estimate when you might begin withdrawals, not merely the age you would like to stop working. Include the possibility that work or withdrawals begin earlier or later.
- Inventory the rest of your household finances. List other retirement accounts, pensions, expected Social Security income, emergency savings, debt, and any assets that could fund early withdrawals. The 401(k) is one part of the household allocation.
- Read the target-date fund documents. Record the current stock and bond mix, the glide-path schedule, whether the strategy is “to” or “through” retirement, the endpoint allocation, and total expenses.
- Map the self-directed menu. Group the available funds by asset class, review their holdings and costs, and note whether the plan lacks an asset class you would otherwise want.
- Test your willingness to do the work. Decide who will monitor drift, review fees, and rebalance. If you are unlikely to follow the written process during a falling market, automation has practical value.
- Choose one coherent policy. Use the target-date fund as the core portfolio or implement a deliberate allocation with individual funds. Combining a target-date fund with several overlapping funds can create an unintended allocation unless you calculate the total exposure.
When a target-date fund is usually the better fit
- You want one diversified holding rather than several allocation decisions.
- You do not want to calculate or execute rebalancing trades.
- You are saving for a conventional retirement horizon and the fund’s glide path matches your expected withdrawal date.
- You prefer a rules-based approach that reduces the temptation to react to daily market news.
- The fund’s total costs are competitive with the plan’s individual options.
Convenience does not remove the need for review. Check the fund when you enroll, when your retirement timing changes, and when the plan changes its investment menu or fees. A target-date fund can be an unsuitable default if its glide path is much more aggressive or conservative than your circumstances require.
When choosing your own funds can make sense
- You understand how stock, bond, and international allocations affect both expected return and loss potential.
- You have a specific allocation that the target-date fund does not provide, such as a different international-stock or bond weighting.
- You can maintain diversification without chasing recent winners.
- You are willing to set a rebalancing schedule and follow it during volatile markets.
- You need to coordinate the 401(k) with substantial assets in an IRA, a spouse’s plan, a pension, or other accounts.
Control can also create a new risk: a portfolio may become more conservative or more aggressive simply because you stop updating it. Self-direction is appropriate only when the additional responsibility is realistic, not merely appealing in theory.
Build and maintain a self-directed portfolio
Write a one-page investment policy
State your target percentages, the purpose of each fund, the circumstances that permit a change, and the date or threshold for rebalancing. Include how contributions will be directed so new money can help restore the targets before you sell existing holdings.
Select broad, diversified options
Prefer funds whose holdings are broad enough to represent the asset class you intend to own. Check for overlap between funds and for concentrations in a single company, industry, country, or maturity range. The plan’s fact sheets and prospectuses provide the holdings and risk descriptions needed for this review.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet the review calendar
Review the account on a predictable schedule rather than after a market shock. At each review, compare actual percentages with targets, check whether the plan changed fees or investment options, and confirm that your retirement date and outside assets still support the policy.
Rebalance deliberately
When the portfolio is outside your stated tolerance, direct new contributions toward underweight areas or exchange holdings according to the plan’s rules. Avoid changing the allocation solely because one category has recently outperformed another.

Coordinate the 401(k) with your whole financial life
The appropriate 401(k) risk level depends partly on assets and income outside the account. A pension or reliable Social Security benefit can provide a bond-like income base, while a large cash reserve can reduce the need to sell investments after a market decline. Conversely, if the 401(k) is your main retirement resource and withdrawals will begin soon, a high stock allocation may expose essential income to a severe downturn.
Consider when withdrawals will begin and whether you can delay them. A fund that continues reducing risk after its target year may fit someone who expects to spend the account soon; a different glide path may suit someone with other income who can leave the account invested longer. The SEC and Department of Labor both emphasize evaluating the household allocation rather than judging one account in isolation.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
A Department of Labor research summary reports that a microsimulation generally found target-date funds outperforming debt-only strategies. In most modeled scenarios, all-equity strategies outperformed target-date funds, but they also carried greater risk. These are model results, not a forecast of what your account will earn, and they do not establish that an all-stock portfolio is suitable for any individual.
Neither approach guarantees adequate retirement income. Market returns, savings rates, fees, inflation, longevity, and the timing of withdrawals all affect the outcome. Past performance and modeled results cannot predict an individual retirement result.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Picking the date without reading the allocation
Problem: Assuming every fund with the same year carries the same risk.
Fix: Compare the current allocation, glide-path schedule, endpoint mix, and “to” or “through” design.
Owning several target-date funds
Problem: Combining dates can produce an allocation different from either fund’s stated strategy and add unnecessary expenses.

Building a collection of overlapping funds
Problem: Multiple funds can still leave you concentrated in the same companies or market segment.
Fix: Review underlying holdings and overlap at the total-portfolio level.
Ignoring plan and administrative charges
Problem: Comparing only the investment expense ratio.
Fix: Add investment, underlying-fund, recordkeeping, administrative, and brokerage-window costs shown in the plan disclosure.
Changing risk after a market decline
Problem: Selling stocks after prices fall can lock in losses and disrupt the long-term policy.
Fix: Make allocation changes only when your time horizon, income needs, or risk capacity changes—not because of a headline.
Assuming automation means “set and forget”
Problem: A target-date fund can remain wrong for you if your retirement date, outside assets, or withdrawal plan changes.
Fix: Review the fund and your household circumstances periodically, even though the fund rebalances itself.
A practical annual review checklist
- Confirm the expected retirement and first-withdrawal dates.
- Review the target-date fund’s current allocation or, for a self-directed portfolio, calculate your actual percentages.
- Check the glide path and whether it is designed to reach its endpoint “to” or “through” retirement.
- Read the latest fee disclosure and fund fact sheets for expense or menu changes.
- Update your inventory of pensions, Social Security expectations, other accounts, emergency savings, and major liabilities.
- For a self-directed portfolio, rebalance under your written rule and document the change.
Bottom line
A target-date fund delegates asset allocation, diversification, and rebalancing in exchange for a predefined glide path and its associated costs. Choosing your own 401(k) investments gives you control but makes you responsible for building a diversified mix, monitoring it, and rebalancing it. Compare the actual glide path and total expenses, then choose the approach you can keep aligned with your entire household plan through changing markets and retirement dates.
