TAP Miles&Go miles normally expire three years after the date of the activity that generated them. The clock is attached to each qualifying activity, not necessarily to the date you opened your account or to one single balance-wide deadline. Some Bonus Miles—including compensation miles and certain promotional awards—can be valid for only one year.
The exact dates in your logged-in TAP Miles&Go account control what happens to your miles. The official programme terms checked on 13 October 2026 also describe limited ways to extend eligible expiring Bonus Miles, plus a separate 12-month relief for qualifying customers who renew Gold status.

What TAP’s expiry rule actually says
TAP Air Portugal’s current Miles&Go Programme Terms and Conditions state: “TAP Miles&Go miles are valid for three (3) years from the date of the activity, unless otherwise specified.” That sentence establishes the ordinary rule, but the final qualification matters. It means three years is not a universal promise for every type of mile posted to an account.

A flight credit, partner earning transaction or other qualifying activity has its own activity date. The miles connected with that activity are assessed against that date. Consequently, an account can contain groups of miles with different expiry dates. A new earning event should not be treated as automatically restarting the full balance for another three years; the terms tie validity to the activity to which the miles relate.

Some Bonus Miles can last one year
TAP specifically identifies compensation miles and some promotional miles as examples of Bonus Miles that may be valid for one year. The shorter period depends on the terms attached to that award. If you received miles after a disruption, service complaint, campaign or other promotion, read the posting details and the dates displayed in your account instead of assuming the standard period.
How to find the dates that apply to your account
Because validity is activity-specific, your account history is more useful than a general rule of thumb. Use the following check before planning an award booking or deciding whether to pay for an extension.
- Sign in to your TAP Miles&Go account. Use the account associated with the member number that received the miles.
- Open your mileage activity or transactions view. Look for each earning entry, including flights, partners, promotions, compensation credits and any purchased or transferred miles.
- Record the activity date and the displayed expiry date. Keep separate notes for different batches; do not combine them into one assumed deadline.
- Identify the mile type. A label such as Bonus Miles, promotion or compensation can signal that a one-year rule or another special condition applies.
- Recheck before acting. TAP can change programme terms, and the live account is where eligibility for an extension and its current charge will appear.
If a transaction is missing, the date is unclear or the balance does not match your records, contact TAP through the support route shown in your account before the deadline. Keep confirmation emails and transaction references so an agent can trace the posting.
When TAP removes expired miles
TAP processes miles due to expire at the end of a month in the early hours of the first day of the following month, using mainland Portugal time. For example, miles whose expiry date is 31 May are processed during the early hours of 1 June in that time zone.
The account balance may still show the miles for several hours while the batch is being processed. Seeing a balance on the first day of a month therefore does not necessarily mean the miles remain safe to use. If the deadline has just passed, allow for the processing window, then refresh the account and review the transaction history.

Why the time-zone detail matters
A member checking from North America, Brazil, Asia or another region may still be on the previous calendar date when mainland Portugal’s processing has begun. Treat the stated expiry date as a local cut-off tied to TAP’s processing schedule, not as a grace period that extends through your own midnight. Complete any extension or redemption before the listed expiry date.
Different mile types do not all have identical terms
The following table separates the published rules from details that must be checked in the member account.
| Mile or situation | Validity information | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary TAP Miles&Go miles | Three years from the date of the related activity, unless another rule applies. | The activity date and expiry shown for that transaction. |
| Compensation miles | TAP lists these as an example of Bonus Miles that may be valid for one year. | The award notice and account label; the one-year period is not stated as applying to every Bonus Mile. |
| Promotional Bonus Miles | Some promotions may use a one-year validity period. | The specific promotion’s conditions and the account’s expiry date. |
| Purchased or transferred miles | The terms classify these as Bonus Miles and say they are valid for at least one additional accrual period. | The transaction-specific terms and the date attached to the posting. This wording should not be converted into a blanket three-year promise. |
| Gold renewal relief | Qualifying renewing Gold customers receive a further 12 months for miles due to expire at the end of their annual Status Miles earning period. | Status renewal timing and whether the account is excluded as a Gold Partner customer. |
“At least one additional accrual period” for purchased or transferred miles is a specific statement in the terms, not proof that every purchased, transferred and flight-earned mile shares the same expiry calculation. Keep those categories separate when estimating what you can redeem.
Can you extend miles before they expire?
Sometimes. TAP documents an extension route for eligible expiring Bonus Miles through the Miles Store and also identifies Club TAP Miles&Go membership as a possible way to extend eligible mileage. These are conditional programme remedies, not an automatic right for every mile in an account.
Miles Store extension
The Miles Store instructions describe a self-service process:
Rank #3
- Log in to your TAP Miles&Go account.
- Open the “Extend miles” area in the Miles Store.
- Review which expiring Bonus Miles are eligible and the deadline displayed for the transaction.
- Select one or more extension blocks. Each block contains 2,000 miles.
- Review the charge shown for your account and pay by credit card.
- Save the confirmation and check the balance and new dates after processing.
The extension applies only to the amount of expiring Bonus Miles covered by the transaction. It is processed in 2,000-mile blocks, cannot be applied retroactively and must be completed before the miles expire. The Miles Store page says the transaction is charged and non-refundable. TAP does not publish a stable price in the material available for this article; the amount and eligibility should therefore be taken from the live account at the time you act.

What happens if you wait until after the deadline?
The terms say the extension cannot be retroactive. Once TAP has processed the expiry, an ordinary Miles Store transaction should not be assumed to restore those miles. If a technical problem prevented a pre-expiry purchase, retain screenshots, payment records and error messages and contact TAP promptly; any remedy would depend on TAP’s decision, not on a stated automatic grace period.
Club TAP Miles&Go
TAP also points members toward Club TAP Miles&Go as a possible pre-expiry option. The precise eligibility, membership cost, effective date and mileage treatment can change, so review the current offer in your account before joining. Do not assume that enrolling after the deadline revives already deleted miles or that every category of Bonus Miles receives the same treatment.
The Gold renewal exception
A separate rule applies to customers who renew TAP Miles&Go Gold. The terms provide a further 12 months for miles that are due to expire at the end of the customer’s annual Status Miles earning period. This is a conditional status benefit, not a general extension for everyone who holds Gold.
Two limitations are especially important:
- The customer must renew Gold; simply having held Gold at some point does not establish eligibility.
- The terms exclude Gold Partner customers from this specific benefit.
Check the status-earning-period end date and the renewal record in your account. If your miles are expiring on a different schedule from that period, do not assume the 12-month relief covers them.

How to decide whether an extension is sensible
An extension has value only if the miles are likely to be used and the cost is lower than the value you expect to receive. TAP’s documentation does not establish a universal break-even point because the charge, your balance, award availability and travel plans vary.
Use this four-part check
- Eligibility: Confirm that the miles are eligible Bonus Miles and that the account offers the extension. Gold renewal relief has separate status conditions.
- Timing: Count backward from the displayed expiry date. The transaction must be completed before expiry, not merely started.
- Amount: Compare the number of miles you would lose with the 2,000-mile extension blocks available. You may not need to extend every expiring mile.
- Cost and reversibility: Read the live charge and remember that the Miles Store page describes the purchase as non-refundable.
If you can redeem the miles for a confirmed trip before they expire, that may avoid an extension purchase. If you cannot use them and the charge is high relative to the realistic value of the miles, paying to preserve them may not make sense. That is a personal calculation, not a benefit TAP guarantees.

Assuming any account activity resets everything
The activity-based rule does not say that earning one new mile renews all older miles. A new flight or partner transaction can create a new expiry date for its own miles while older batches continue toward their original deadlines.
Using the standard rule for promotional credits
One-year promotional or compensation miles can disappear much sooner than ordinary mileage. Read the award communication and inspect the transaction line instead of applying three years automatically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWaiting for the first day of the month
TAP’s batch processing occurs in the early hours of the first day after a month-end deadline. The temporary appearance of a balance during processing is not a reliable extension.

Buying an extension after expiry
The documented transaction is not retroactive. Complete it while the miles are still eligible and retain the confirmation.
Confusing status benefits with a general policy
The extra 12 months belongs to qualifying renewing Gold customers and excludes Gold Partner customers. It does not change the standard rule for every member.
What to do if the balance looks wrong
- Capture the account balance, transaction history and displayed expiry dates, including the date and time shown on your device.
- Check whether the missing miles were Bonus Miles, compensation, promotional, purchased or transferred, since each can have different conditions.
- Allow several hours if the date is the first day of a month and the account is undergoing the scheduled expiry processing.
- Compare the account with booking confirmations, promotion emails or payment receipts.
- Contact TAP support through the official channel in your account, provide the member number and transaction references, and ask for the activity date and rule applied to the disputed miles.
Keep the response in writing. If TAP confirms that the miles expired under the published terms, an extension or reinstatement is not guaranteed; if the account suffered a posting error, the transaction evidence gives support staff the information needed to investigate.

How current are these rules?
The rules described here are those shown in TAP’s official Miles&Go programme terms and Miles Store instructions checked on 13 October 2026. The terms page does not show a publication date in the available material. Expiry periods, extension charges, Club conditions and status benefits can change, so verify the current terms and your logged-in account before relying on a date or paying for an extension.
