Use a CHF account when most of your income, bills and purchases are in Switzerland; use a EUR account when your recurring obligations are in the euro area. If your month is genuinely split, holding both currencies or using a multi-currency account can avoid repeated conversions. The right choice depends on your actual payment mix and the provider’s complete price: exchange-rate markup, fixed conversion charge, card fee, ATM fee and transfer costs.
What the currency of the account actually changes
Your account currency determines whether a payment can leave your balance without an exchange. A CHF salary paid into a CHF account does not need conversion for a Swiss rent payment or a purchase priced in francs. A EUR pension paid into a EUR account can fund a euro direct debit without first becoming francs. Every time the payment currency and balance currency differ, the bank, card issuer or payment service applies an exchange rate and may add a markup or fixed fee.

This is a cash-flow decision, not a forecast of which currency will rise. Keeping money in the currency in which you will soon spend it removes one conversion from the transaction. Keeping a balance in another currency can be sensible when you have a known future liability there, but it exposes that balance to exchange-rate movements before you spend it.

When a CHF account is usually the better base
Most income and fixed costs are in Switzerland
A Swiss salary, pension or freelance receipts paid in CHF align naturally with a CHF account. Swiss rent, health-insurance premiums, taxes and ordinary domestic spending can then be paid without converting each item. If you occasionally buy in euros, converting only the amount needed for those purchases may cost less than maintaining a second account with fees.
You need predictable franc cash flow
Budgeting is simpler when the balance and liabilities share a currency. You do not need to guess how many euros a future franc balance will buy to cover a Swiss bill. This matters most for large, unavoidable payments rather than discretionary shopping.
Your euro activity is occasional
For a few annual trips or infrequent online purchases, compare the card’s disclosed FX markup and ATM fee with the cost of opening and funding a EUR account. A low-fee card can be adequate when the volume is small, but “free” account branding does not prove that foreign exchange is free.

When a EUR account is usually the better base
Recurring obligations are priced in euros
School fees, a mortgage, rent, subscriptions, insurance or family support in a euro-area country create a predictable EUR requirement. Funding those obligations in EUR avoids converting every payment date. Ask whether the provider supports both SEPA credit transfers and SEPA direct debits if billers collect automatically.
Your regular income arrives in euros
A EUR salary, pension or business revenue can be received and spent without an initial conversion. Converting only the portion needed for Swiss expenses makes the exchange decision explicit instead of embedding it in every card transaction.
You spend most of the month in the euro area
Frequent card purchases, cash withdrawals and transfers in euros can make a EUR balance worthwhile even if you live in Switzerland. Measure the pattern over several representative months rather than relying on the number of trips you expect to take.
SEPA: useful for euro payments, not a guarantee of free conversion
The European Commission describes SEPA as a single set of tools and standards that makes cross-border euro payments as easy as national payments. Switzerland is within SEPA’s geographical scope, so a Swiss resident can often send or receive euro credit transfers using the recipient’s IBAN and the required BIC or other bank details.

SEPA standardizes the payment rails, not the exchange rate. A CHF account sending a EUR transfer still needs a conversion unless it has a EUR balance. Confirm the provider’s cut-off time, transfer limit, execution date and fee before relying on it for a deadline.
SEPA credit transfers
Use a EUR balance when possible. If the money starts in CHF, compare the provider’s quoted rate, percentage markup and any fixed conversion charge with converting at another point in the process. Make sure the beneficiary accepts a SEPA transfer and that your account is eligible to send one; some products advertise international transfers but do not support every SEPA feature.
SEPA direct debits
A euro biller may require a mandate and a EUR account that accepts SEPA direct debit collections. Ask whether the account permits incoming direct debits, how mandate disputes are handled and whether the provider blocks collections from certain countries. A card payment is not a substitute when the merchant requires a direct debit.
What equal-charge rules do and do not cover
Your Europe explains that, under EU rules, a bank generally must charge the same rate for a cross-border payment in euros as for an equivalent domestic payment. The rule covers euro transfers and, in the applicable circumstances, euro ATM withdrawals and card payments. It does not set a standard price for currency conversion. Providers decide their commercial exchange-rate spread and may charge for converting CHF to EUR or another non-euro currency. Switzerland’s participation in SEPA does not turn every Swiss account into an EU-regulated product, so read the tariff for your institution.

How card foreign-exchange pricing works
When you pay in a currency different from your card account, the transaction can involve the card network’s rate, the issuer’s markup and a fixed foreign-transaction fee. An ATM withdrawal can add a cash-withdrawal fee, an operator surcharge and a less favorable exchange rate. The merchant’s own conversion option, often called dynamic currency conversion, may add another margin; compare the amount in the card’s account currency before accepting it.
Regulation (EU) 2021/1230 requires currency-conversion charges for card transactions, where the regulation applies, to be expressed as a percentage markup over the latest European Central Bank reference rate and disclosed before payment. Use that disclosure to compare cards. A percentage markup is not the same as the network rate, and a card with no annual fee can still be expensive for frequent euro or franc spending.
Questions to ask about a card
- What percentage markup is applied to a purchase in the other currency?
- Is there a fixed fee per foreign transaction?
- What fee applies to an ATM withdrawal, and does the provider reimburse any operator surcharge?
- Are weekend, holiday or out-of-hours rates different?
- Can you hold and spend from both CHF and EUR balances, and which balance is debited first?
- What happens if a merchant presents a transaction in the wrong currency or reverses it later?
Compare the three practical setups with one representative month
Do not compare account names in isolation. Price the same month under a CHF account, a EUR account and, if available, a multi-currency account.

- Record every inflow. List salary, pension, benefits, freelance receipts and transfers by currency. Note whether the payment is recurring and whether the payer can use SEPA.
- Record fixed outflows. Separate CHF rent, insurance, taxes and utilities from EUR bills, subscriptions, tuition and family payments. Mark direct debits separately from one-off transfers.
- Record variable spending. Add card purchases and cash withdrawals in each currency. Use statements rather than memory; small weekly transactions can dominate an annual total.
- Obtain the tariff. Capture monthly account fees, card fees, incoming and outgoing transfer charges, FX spread or markup, minimum charges, ATM fees and any fee for holding a second currency.
- Price each setup. For every conversion, multiply the amount by the quoted markup and add fixed charges. Include the rate actually offered, not only an advertised mid-market rate. Keep one-off promotional prices separate from recurring prices.
- Check payment functionality. Verify SEPA credit-transfer and direct-debit support, payment limits, execution times and the countries served. A lower headline fee is irrelevant if a bill cannot be collected.
- Stress-test the result. Recalculate with a weaker franc, a stronger franc and a month with unusually high travel or medical spending. This shows whether a small expected saving depends on a fragile exchange-rate assumption.
A simple worksheet can show the decision: total CHF income, total EUR income, CHF spending, EUR spending, conversions, fixed fees and ATM fees. Compare the annualized totals and keep a cash reserve in the currency of the next major bill.
Examples for common cross-border situations
Swiss resident with a euro mortgage
Keep the mortgage amount and payment schedule in EUR. If salary is in CHF, convert a planned amount shortly after payday or hold a EUR balance funded in advance. Compare the provider’s recurring conversion cost with a separate EUR account that can make the lender’s SEPA direct debit. Do not leave the payment exposed to a last-day exchange rate if a missed debit would trigger a penalty.
Euro-area resident working in Switzerland
A CHF salary account can receive wages and pay Swiss expenses directly. Convert only the amount needed for euro rent, taxes or household transfers. If those euro obligations are stable, a EUR account funded on a schedule can reduce repeated card conversions. Check whether the employer’s payroll requires a Swiss account and whether the EUR account can receive SEPA credits.
Cross-border commuter with spending in both currencies every week
Compare a two-account arrangement with a multi-currency account. The latter is useful only if its combined FX markup, subscription fee, card fee and withdrawal policy beat the cost of maintaining separate CHF and EUR balances. Set the card’s spending source deliberately; otherwise an automatic conversion may occur even when you hold the needed currency.
Retiree receiving a EUR pension but living in Switzerland
Keep enough EUR for recurring euro bills and convert a planned monthly amount for Swiss living costs. Review the pension payment date, transfer fee and deposit protection. Avoid converting the entire pension on a single day if the timing creates unnecessary exchange-rate risk, but do not split conversions so finely that fixed fees consume the saving.

Occasional traveller from Switzerland
Start with the CHF account and a card whose disclosed EUR markup and ATM terms are competitive. A EUR account becomes more compelling when travel, online purchases and family transfers create a sustained monthly euro volume. Always decline a merchant’s optional conversion when your card issuer’s disclosed terms are better.
Exchange-rate risk is a real cost
Holding the currency of a future expense can protect the amount you need, while holding the other currency can increase or reduce its eventual buying power. Neither account eliminates risk; it chooses when you take it. A Swiss National Bank working paper published in 2025 uses high-frequency card data and notes that the franc appreciated by approximately 20% against the euro on the day the 2015 minimum-rate policy was discontinued. That historical move illustrates how quickly a cross-border shopping advantage can change; it is not a forecast of the next move.

For a known bill, match the currency and due date rather than speculating. For discretionary spending, set a conversion rule—such as converting monthly or when a balance reaches a threshold—so that emotion does not drive every transaction. Keep emergency funds diversified only when you understand the liquidity and protection rules for each currency.
What the 2025 Swiss debit-card settlement means for you
On 24 July 2025, Switzerland’s COMCO/WEKO reported a Visa settlement limiting the average interchange fee for Swiss domestic debit-card payments to 0.15%. Category-specific rates can be up to 0.2% generally or 0.12% for everyday goods, with a 36-centime cap for payments of CHF 300 or more. These are fees paid within the card-payment system between participants. They are not a promise that your account has no foreign-exchange markup, annual card fee or ATM charge, and they do not set the price of a EUR transaction. Use them as context for Swiss domestic card economics, not as a substitute for reading your own tariff.

A multi-currency account is a tool, not a category of guaranteed savings. It can be worthwhile when you have regular inflows and outflows in both CHF and EUR, need separate balances, and can spend directly from the balance matching the purchase. It is less attractive when one currency dominates and the provider charges a monthly fee or embeds a wide spread in every conversion.
Check these terms before opening one
- Which CHF and EUR account details are provided, and can both receive salary or pension payments?
- Are balances held as bank deposits, and which country’s deposit-protection scheme applies?
- What is the weekday and weekend FX markup, and is there a monthly fair-use limit?
- Are card spending, cash withdrawals and transfers debited from the matching balance automatically?
- Can you set a preferred balance or disable automatic conversion?
- What happens if the provider fails, freezes an account or changes eligibility for your country of residence?
Eligibility, protection and service checks
Residence, tax status, identification documents and the provider’s licensing jurisdiction can determine whether you may open or keep an account. Switzerland’s SEPA participation does not guarantee that every Swiss resident can obtain a euro account from every institution. Confirm supported countries, accepted documents, local address requirements and whether a Swiss IBAN or a euro-area IBAN is issued.
Deposit protection depends on the legal entity holding the money and the applicable scheme, not simply on the currency symbol shown in the app. Read the protection limit, exclusions and compensation process. Also check customer-service hours, dispute handling, language support and the procedure for a failed direct debit. A marginal FX saving is not useful if a payment cannot be corrected before a late fee.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing the account from the exchange rate alone
A headline rate can hide a fixed conversion fee, card surcharge or monthly subscription. Recalculate the full representative month with every charge included.
Assuming SEPA means no fee of any kind
SEPA simplifies euro payment processing and equal-charge rules can apply to equivalent euro payments, but currency conversion is a separate commercial service. Hold EUR or compare the conversion price before sending.

Ignoring ATM economics
Two withdrawals can cost more than one larger withdrawal if a fixed fee applies, but carrying excess cash creates security and exchange risk. Check both your provider’s fee and the ATM operator’s surcharge.
Accepting dynamic currency conversion automatically
When a terminal or website offers to convert the price into CHF or EUR, compare that rate with your card’s disclosed markup. The local-currency option is often easier to evaluate, but use the terms you have actually verified.
Holding too little in the bill currency
A direct debit can fail even when your total wealth is sufficient if the required currency balance is short. Keep a buffer for the bill, timing differences and any fixed collection fee.
Leaving old mandates and cards active
Close unused direct-debit mandates and replace expired cards deliberately. A forgotten EUR mandate can create an overdraft or conversion at an unfavorable rate.
A practical decision checklist
- Which currency pays your largest recurring income?
- Which currency covers your largest unavoidable bills?
- What percentage of monthly card spending is in the other currency?
- What is the all-in FX cost, including spread, markup and fixed fee?
- What do foreign ATM withdrawals cost, including operator surcharges?
- Does the account support the SEPA credit transfers and direct debits you need?
- Can you hold both balances without an excessive monthly or card fee?
- Which deposit-protection scheme and legal entity apply?
- How would a sharp exchange-rate move affect your next six months of bills?
- Is the provider eligible for your residence and tax situation?
If one currency funds nearly all recurring activity, make that your base account and handle the minority currency deliberately. If both currencies recur every month, price a two-balance or multi-currency setup using actual statements. Revisit the calculation after a move, job change, new loan, pension change or major shift in travel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a euro account worth it if I live in Switzerland?
It can be worthwhile when you have recurring euro bills, income or substantial euro spending. Compare the total cost of holding and funding it with the conversion, card and transfer fees of using a CHF account.
What is the cheapest way to pay euro bills from Switzerland?
There is no universal cheapest method. Compare a EUR balance funded in advance, a CHF-to-EUR SEPA transfer and a card payment using the exact markup, fixed fee, direct-debit capability and timing for your provider.
Should I use a CHF or EUR card abroad?
Use the card whose account currency matches the purchase when possible, then compare the issuer’s disclosed FX markup, fixed foreign-transaction fee and ATM terms. Account currency alone does not establish the cheapest card.
Do I need a multi-currency account for cross-border spending?
Only if activity in both currencies is regular enough to justify the fees and the account lets you hold and spend from matching balances. Occasional euro spending may be cheaper through a CHF account with a transparent FX tariff.
Can a Swiss account use SEPA direct debit?
Some can, but eligibility and mandate handling vary. Confirm that the specific account accepts incoming SEPA direct debits from your biller’s country and understand its dispute and balance-shortfall procedures.
