Neither is automatically “better.” SSA suits money you can leave under its long timetable and contribution limits. A mutual fund may fit a goal requiring a different asset mix or more flexible investment choice, but its value can rise or fall and cannot be judged without naming the fund and period.
What you are actually comparing
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is the common name for the Sukanya Samriddhi Account, a government savings scheme created for a girl child. Its eligibility, deposits, withdrawals, maturity and interest-rate method come from notified rules. India Post currently lists the rate at 8.2% per annum, calculated yearly and compounded yearly; the National Savings Institute (NSI) table shows 8.2% in every listed quarter of financial years 2025–26 and 2026–27. The rate remains subject to government notification, so 8.2% is the currently listed rate, not a promise that every deposit will earn that rate for the account’s entire life. See the India Post savings-schemes page and the NSI quarterly interest-rate table.

A “child mutual fund” is not one standardized product. It usually means mutual-fund units purchased in a minor’s name, with a parent or legal guardian handling the account while the child is a minor. The selected fund could invest in equities, bonds, money-market instruments or a combination. Its return is the change in the scheme’s net asset value plus distributions, after costs, over a specified period. A category-wide return or risk number therefore does not exist.

Sukanya Samriddhi Account: eligibility, deposits and timetable
Who can open the account
Under the Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme Rules, 2019, a guardian may open an account in the name of a girl child who has not attained age 10. This is a scheme-specific eligibility test: a son, an older girl, or a general-purpose family account cannot be substituted for the eligible child.

How much you may deposit
NSI’s scheme summary lists a ₹250 minimum and a ₹1.5 lakh maximum in each financial year. These are annual scheme limits, not a requirement to invest ₹1.5 lakh. Plan contributions around the cash you can leave invested and keep records of deposits. The NSI summary also says an account can be transferred between post offices or banks in India; confirm the current operational procedure with the institution handling the account.
The account’s interest is calculated yearly and compounded yearly at the rate notified for the relevant period. India Post’s current listing is 8.2% per annum, while the NSI table records 8.2% for each listed quarter in FY 2025–26 and FY 2026–27. Recheck the official rate table when opening an account or making a long-term projection because a future notification can change the rate.
When the account matures
The rules provide maturity 21 years after the date of opening. That is an account-age rule, not a promise that the child will be exactly 21 at maturity. If the account is opened shortly before the child’s tenth birthday, maturity can occur well after the child turns 21.

SSA withdrawals and early closure
Education withdrawal
An education withdrawal can be permitted after the account holder turns 18 or passes the tenth standard, whichever occurs first. The permitted amount is up to 50% of the balance at the end of the preceding financial year. The rules require documentary evidence, such as a confirmed admission offer or fee slip, and limit the withdrawal to the education expenses shown in that evidence. This is not an on-demand withdrawal facility for any household expense. Read the documentary and procedural requirements in the 2019 rules before applying.
Marriage-related premature closure
The scheme has a separate premature-closure route connected with marriage. Its conditions include that the account holder must be at least 18 on the marriage date, along with the rule’s timing and documentation requirements. Because this is an exception to the normal 21-year maturity, obtain the current form and evidence requirements from the post office or bank rather than assuming an early closure will be approved.
How a minor’s mutual-fund folio works

- Choose the actual scheme and plan. Record whether it is equity, debt, hybrid or another permitted category, the direct or regular plan, growth or distribution option, and the investment objective. These choices determine the relevant risk and return evidence.
- Set up the minor’s folio with the guardian relationship recorded. Follow the fund house’s current KYC and documentation checklist for the child and parent or legal guardian.
- Pay from an allowed bank account. SEBI’s process permits payment from the minor’s bank account, the parent’s or legal guardian’s bank account, or a joint account of the minor with the parent or guardian.
- Keep ownership and banking details aligned. The units are held in the minor’s name. On redemption, proceeds must be sent to the minor’s verified bank account under the SEBI process; do not treat the guardian’s personal account as the default destination.
- Complete the majority transition. When the minor turns 18, the young adult must provide updated KYC and bank information before operating the folio. Until the fund house completes that update, transactions can be restricted.
These requirements make a minor mutual-fund investment different from an adult’s account opened merely “for” a child. The guardian administers the investment while the child is a minor, but the account’s records, verification and eventual control must transition to the child.

Returns: why 8.2% cannot be compared with “mutual-fund returns”
SSA has one currently published scheme rate: 8.2% per annum, compounded yearly, as listed by India Post in 2026. The NSI table provides the same rate for each listed quarter of FY 2025–26 and FY 2026–27. Those facts let you describe the current credited-rate framework, but they do not establish a fixed 21-year rate.
A mutual-fund comparison needs at least four identifiers: the exact scheme, the plan (direct or regular), the option (growth or distribution), and the start and end dates. You also need to say whether the number is an absolute return, annualised return, rolling return, or an investor’s internal rate of return from periodic contributions. The sources available for this comparison provide no like-for-like mutual-fund performance study against SSA. Do not use a fund’s past return as a forecast, and do not use a single favourable market period to represent all future outcomes.

For a disciplined comparison, write down the goal date, contribution schedule and acceptable loss first. Then compare SSA’s notified-rate history and lock-in with the chosen fund’s official performance history and risk information for the same dates. If the scheme, period or measure changes, the comparison is no longer like for like.
Risk: scheme-rate uncertainty versus market volatility
SSA risks and trade-offs
- Rate-reset risk: the 8.2% listing is current, while future rates are subject to government notification.
- Liquidity risk: normal maturity is 21 years from opening, and the education route has age, documentary and amount limits.
- Contribution and eligibility limits: the account is only for an eligible girl child and accepts between the annual minimum and maximum stated by the scheme.
- Inflation risk: a nominal credited rate does not guarantee that the eventual balance will preserve purchasing power for a future education or marriage cost.
Mutual-fund risks and trade-offs
- Asset risk: an equity fund can experience substantial market declines; a debt fund has interest-rate and credit risks; a hybrid fund combines exposures. The fund’s mandated risk information is the relevant guide.
- Return variability: NAV changes daily with the portfolio and market conditions. A positive historical period does not guarantee a positive result over your goal horizon.
- Selection risk: two funds in the broad “child” or “family” marketing space can hold very different assets, costs and strategies.
- Timing risk: selling after a market fall can permanently reduce the amount available for the child’s goal.
Calling all mutual funds high-risk or all SSA deposits risk-free would both be inaccurate. The products expose you to different uncertainties: SSA combines a notified rate with a long, restricted timetable; a mutual fund combines market exposure with scheme-level choice and volatility.
Access and control at the point you need the money
SSA is designed around a long holding period. Before choosing it, map the account-opening date to the intended education date. If the date falls before the child reaches 18 or passes tenth standard, the education-withdrawal route may not be available. Even when eligible, the maximum is tied to 50% of the preceding financial year’s balance and documented charges.

A minor mutual-fund folio does not mean the guardian can freely divert the child’s investment to any personal purpose. The SEBI operating process routes redemption money to the minor’s verified bank account and requires a formal KYC and bank-detail update when the child becomes an adult. Ask the asset-management company how it handles redemptions, signatures, bank verification and the majority conversion before investing.
Taxes: verify the rule that applies to you
NSI’s SSA summary states that deposits qualify under Section 80C and that interest is exempt under Section 10. Those statements must be checked against the current Income Tax Act, the tax regime you use and your personal eligibility before you claim a deduction or exemption. Tax rules can change, and the correct result depends on facts such as who pays, who files and which regime is selected.
The material used here does not establish one universal tax result for mutual-fund units held by a minor. Tax treatment can depend on the fund, the transaction, the holding period, applicable provisions and current law. Obtain current tax advice for the exact folio and redemption rather than declaring either option a blanket tax winner.

Which option fits which goal?
SSA is a closer fit when
- The beneficiary is a girl child who has not attained age 10 and you can accept the scheme’s eligibility and annual deposit limits.
- You want a government-notified interest framework rather than daily NAV movements.
- The money can remain invested for the 21-year maturity, with only the rule-based education or marriage exceptions available.
- You value a simple, transferable account and are willing to recheck the rate whenever the government updates it.
A mutual fund may be a closer fit when
- You need to select a particular asset mix, such as equity exposure for a long goal or a lower-volatility allocation for a nearer goal.
- You need an investment structure that is not restricted to an eligible daughter or to SSA’s annual limits.
- You understand that the account value can fall and have a plan to reduce risk as the goal approaches.
- You are prepared to maintain the minor’s bank, KYC and majority-transition records.
Using both
Some families divide a goal between the two structures: an SSA contribution for the portion suited to its rules and a carefully selected mutual fund for a separately defined market-risk allocation. Treat them as separate accounts with separate ownership, access and tax checks. Do not count the same money twice in a goal plan, and do not assume that a mutual fund can replace SSA’s eligibility-based benefits or that SSA can provide a fund’s asset-allocation flexibility.
A practical decision checklist
- Write the child’s age, the account-opening date and the date the money will be needed.
- For SSA, confirm age-under-10 eligibility, the ₹250 annual minimum, the ₹1.5 lakh annual maximum and the institution’s current opening process.
- For a mutual fund, identify the exact scheme, plan, option, asset category, risk information and historical period you will use.
- Test liquidity: identify whether the goal could require money before SSA’s permitted education access or before a mutual-fund majority transition is complete.
- List who will fund the account and verify that the bank account used for mutual-fund payments and the minor’s verified redemption account meet the applicable process.
- Check current tax rules with a qualified professional if the deduction or exemption affects your choice.
- Review the plan annually: confirm the SSA rate, update mutual-fund risk and goal-date assumptions, and move toward an appropriate risk level as the spending date approaches.
Bottom line
SSA and a child mutual fund solve different problems. SSA currently lists 8.2% per annum, compounded yearly, under government-notified terms, but its rate can change and access is tightly defined around a 21-year maturity and limited exceptions. A mutual fund has no single return or risk profile: the result depends on the named scheme, its assets and the market period, while minor-account payments, redemptions and the age-18 update follow SEBI’s process. Choose only after matching the product’s timetable, volatility and control requirements to the child’s actual financial goal.
