In brief: A natural or legal guardian can open a Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA) for a girl who is under 10 on the opening date. The account accepts ₹250 to ₹1,50,000 in each financial year, in multiples of ₹50. Deposits are required for 15 years, but the account matures 21 years after opening. Education withdrawals are restricted to documented costs and marriage closure has strict age, paperwork and timing conditions.
India Post’s savings page displayed an SSA rate of 8.2% per annum, calculated and compounded yearly, on 13 October 2026. That is a government-notified rate that can change; it is not a promise that 8.2% will apply for the entire 21-year term.

Who can open a Sukanya Samriddhi account?
The account is opened in the name of the girl child, not the parent. A natural or legal guardian submits the application while the child is below 10 years of age on the date the account is opened. The governing rules are in the Government of India’s Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme, 2019, as amended.
Age test
The relevant date is the opening date. A child who has already turned 10 does not meet the ordinary eligibility rule, even if the application was prepared earlier. Keep documentary proof of the child’s date of birth because the authorized bank or post office may require it.

Number of accounts in a family
Ordinarily, one account may be opened for each eligible girl child, with a family maximum of two accounts. The scheme contains an exception for qualifying multiple births, such as twins or triplets. Because the exception depends on the precise circumstances and the scheme’s wording, families with multiple births should ask the institution to apply the current rule and provide the requested evidence rather than assuming a third account is automatically permitted.
Who controls the account?
The girl is the account holder from the start. The guardian operates the account while she is a minor. When she reaches majority, operation shifts to the account holder under the scheme’s procedure. This distinction matters: a parent may make deposits and handle routine operation as guardian, but the savings legally belong to the child.
How much can you deposit?
| Rule | Amount or period | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Opening deposit | ₹250 minimum | The account cannot be opened with less than ₹250. |
| Annual minimum | ₹250 in every financial year | The financial year runs from 1 April through 31 March. |
| Annual maximum | ₹1,50,000 aggregate | All deposits during that financial year count toward the ceiling. |
| Allowed denomination | Multiples of ₹50 | Each deposit should conform to the scheme’s ₹50-multiple rule. |
| Deposit period | 15 years from opening | Deposits stop after the 15-year contribution period. |
| Maturity | 21 years from opening | The account can continue earning under the scheme after contributions end, until maturity. |
Monthly deposits are optional
SSA does not require a monthly installment. You can make deposits at intervals that suit your cash flow, provided the total for the financial year is at least ₹250, each payment is in a multiple of ₹50, and the total does not exceed ₹1,50,000. A family may therefore choose one annual payment, several irregular payments or a more regular schedule without turning a monthly pattern into a legal requirement.
What if you miss the annual minimum?
Do not assume that missing ₹250 automatically closes the account or that a fixed penalty applies in every case. The scheme has default and revival provisions, but the correct amount, form and process depend on the current operational rules. Contact the account-holding post office or authorized bank and ask for the present revival procedure before making a corrective payment.

How long does an SSA last?
Two different clocks apply:
- Contribution clock: deposits are allowed for 15 years from the account’s opening date.
- Maturity clock: the account matures 21 years from that same opening date.
The scheme states: “The account shall mature on completion of a period of twenty-one years from the date of its opening.” That wording, in the 2019 scheme, means maturity is not calculated from the girl’s 18th birthday, the date of the last deposit or the date she starts college.
Interest after contributions end
Once the 15-year deposit period has finished, no further contribution is required, but the account remains within its 21-year term. The balance continues to be governed by the notified SSA interest rules until maturity or a permitted earlier withdrawal or closure.
What interest rate applies?
India Post’s current savings-scheme listing showed 8.2% per annum, calculated yearly and compounded yearly when checked on 13 October 2026. The Department of Economic Affairs’ amendment dated 12 February 2024 specified 8.2% for deposits and balances on or after 1 January 2024. You can verify the live listing at India Post’s savings schemes page.

Therefore, 8.2% is a date-stamped current display, not a guaranteed return for all 21 years. Any projection must state its assumptions: contribution amount and timing, the applicable rate in each period and whether the rate is unrealistically held constant. A calculator can illustrate scenarios, but it is not required to open or operate an SSA.

How to open the account
The exact document list accepted by every authorized bank and post office was not established in the available current material. Institutions can also update forms and verification requirements. Use this process rather than relying on an old checklist:
- Choose an authorized post office or bank that offers the Sukanya Samriddhi Account.
- Request the current SSA account-opening form and ask which identity, address, guardianship and date-of-birth documents it accepts for your circumstances.
- Submit the completed form in the girl’s name, with the guardian’s details and the required supporting documents.
- Pay at least ₹250, observing the ₹50-multiple rule, and retain the institution’s account confirmation and transaction records.
- Ask how the account will be operated when the girl reaches majority and how to update contact or identity details later.
If a branch or post office gives instructions that differ from an older article or downloadable manual, follow the institution’s current form and the scheme text, and request clarification in writing.
When can money be withdrawn for education?
Education access is a limited statutory withdrawal route, not unrestricted access to half the account. The account holder may apply after she attains 18 years of age or passes the 10th standard, whichever occurs earlier. Thus, passing the 10th standard before age 18 can satisfy the timing condition.

How the 50% limit is calculated
The maximum is 50% of the amount standing in the account at the end of the financial year immediately preceding the year of the application. It is not automatically 50% of the balance on the day the request is filed, and it is not a lifetime permission to withdraw that amount whenever desired.

Evidence and actual-cost ceiling
The application must establish the education need with documents such as a confirmed admission offer or a fee slip showing the amount required. The payment is limited both by the 50% statutory ceiling and by the actual tuition, fees or other charges demonstrated in the supporting material. A request for an amount larger than the documented requirement should not be treated as available simply because the 50% calculation would allow it.
Lump sum or installments
The permitted amount may be taken in one lump sum or in installments. There can be no more than one education withdrawal in a year, for up to five years, and every withdrawal remains subject to the ceiling and documented expense requirement. The official scheme text is the controlling source; a useful government explainer is available from the Press Information Bureau (January 2026).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can the account be closed for marriage?
Marriage does not automatically terminate an SSA. Early closure for the account holder’s intended marriage is available only when all of the scheme’s conditions are met.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAge and timing conditions
- The account holder must be at least 18 years old on the marriage date.
- The closure request may be made no earlier than one month before the intended marriage.
- The request must be made no later than three months after the marriage.
Documents required for this route
The account holder must submit the prescribed application, proof of age and a declaration on non-judicial stamp paper attested by a notary. The institution may require additional verification under the current form. A marriage proposal, engagement or planned ceremony before the permitted window does not itself create an immediate withdrawal right.

What happens at maturity?
At 21 years from the opening date, the account holder applies for closure and payment of the outstanding balance with applicable interest. The exact form, identity verification and payment procedure can change, so confirm the current process with the post office or authorized bank holding the account. Keep the opening date and account records: the maturity date is calculated from that original date.
Death and exceptional premature closure
The scheme has special provisions for the death of the account holder and for specified extreme compassionate circumstances, including serious medical situations or the death of the guardian. These provisions are exceptions, not a general emergency-withdrawal facility. They are conditional on the facts, prescribed documentation and the treatment set out in the current scheme. Ask the account-holding institution to identify the applicable clause and required evidence before filing a request; do not assume that a medical expense, job loss or ordinary financial emergency qualifies.
Tax and documentation cautions
Do not rely on blanket claims that every SSA contribution, interest posting and maturity payment is “tax-free.” The applicable result can depend on the tax regime, the year and the account holder’s circumstances, and the material available for this guide does not fully resolve current tax treatment. For a filing decision, use current Income Tax Department guidance or a qualified tax professional.

How to decide whether the rules fit your goal
SSA is designed for a long, child-specific savings horizon. Before depositing, check these decision points:
- Eligibility: the girl is under 10 when the account is opened and the family-account limit is available.
- Liquidity: ordinary access is restricted; education and marriage routes have separate thresholds, evidence and timing rules.
- Contribution capacity: you can meet at least ₹250 in each financial year without assuming that monthly deposits are mandatory.
- Time horizon: you can leave the money until maturity at 21 years from opening, rather than planning around the end of the 15-year deposit period.
- Rate uncertainty: projections allow for government rate changes instead of treating today’s 8.2% display as fixed.
- Records: you can preserve the opening date, deposit evidence and documents needed for any permitted withdrawal.
These rules explain both the appeal and the constraint of SSA: it offers a structured, long-term account in the child’s name, but it is not a flexible savings account for a parent’s short-term needs.
