Student Loan Deferment vs. Forbearance: Costs and When Each Makes Sense

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

Short answer: For a federal student loan, deferment is usually the less expensive pause when you qualify—especially if the loan is subsidized, because interest generally does not accrue during an eligible deferment. Forbearance can pause or reduce payments when you need short-term relief but do not qualify for a suitable deferment; interest generally accrues on both subsidized and unsubsidized federal loans during forbearance.

Neither option is free or automatically harmless. Before requesting either, identify your loan type, ask how interest and capitalization will be handled, check whether the pause affects forgiveness progress, and compare an income-driven or other repayment plan if the payment problem will last. Private-loan rules come from your contract, not the federal rules described below.

Deferment and forbearance are different kinds of payment relief

What deferment means

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) defines deferment as “a temporary pause to your student loan payments for specific situations such as active duty military service and reenrollment in school.” Federal deferment is tied to qualifying circumstances and defined periods. Depending on the category, you may need to apply and provide documentation. Read the CFPB’s explanation of student loan deferment before assuming an event makes you eligible.

A deferment is not active merely because you submitted a request. Continue making required payments until your servicer confirms approval, the effective date, and the amount due during processing.

What forbearance means

The CFPB describes forbearance as “a temporary postponement or reduction of your student loan payments because you are experiencing financial difficulty.” A federal servicer may approve a full pause or a reduced payment. Some forms are mandatory when you meet specified criteria; other requests depend on servicer approval. CFPB guidance says federal servicers may grant forbearance for up to 12 months at a time. See the agency’s page on student loan forbearance for the request process.

Keep paying until the servicer confirms that forbearance has been approved. A pending application, phone conversation, or message in your account is not a substitute for written confirmation of the start date.

Why the distinction changes your cost

The labels describe different eligibility systems, but the financial result depends on the loan itself. A subsidized federal loan can receive an interest benefit during an eligible deferment. The same subsidized loan generally continues accruing interest during forbearance. An unsubsidized federal loan generally accrues interest during either type of pause. Private loans can follow entirely different terms.

Federal deferment versus forbearance at a glance

Issue Deferment Forbearance
Basic use Temporary pause for specified qualifying situations Temporary pause or reduced payment during financial difficulty
Federal eligibility Defined qualifying reasons and periods General requests may be subject to servicer discretion; some forms are mandatory when criteria are met
Interest on subsidized federal loans Generally does not accrue during deferment Accrues during forbearance
Interest on unsubsidized federal loans Accrues Accrues
Private loans Depends on lender and contract Depends on lender and contract
Approval Continue payments until approved Continue payments until approved
Forgiveness progress A pause can affect progress; verify the specific program and loan A pause can affect progress; verify the specific program and loan
Typical duration information Defined by the qualifying deferment category A federal servicer may grant up to 12 months at a time

This is a high-level federal comparison, not a promise that every loan or forgiveness program follows the same rule. Your promissory note, loan program, servicer and the current program guidance control the result.

How each pause affects interest and your balance

Interest accrual by federal loan type

  • Subsidized federal loan in deferment: Interest generally does not accrue during the eligible deferment.
  • Unsubsidized federal loan in deferment: Interest accrues while payments are paused.
  • Subsidized or unsubsidized federal loan in forbearance: Interest accrues during the forbearance.

Accrued interest is a real cost even when your required payment is zero. Ask the servicer for the interest rate, the balance on which interest is being charged, and the estimated interest through the requested end date. A precise estimate requires your individual loan data; there is no universal dollar cost for a deferment or forbearance.

Capitalization is loan-program specific

Capitalization means unpaid interest is added to principal, so future interest can be charged on a larger balance. Do not assume that every federal pause capitalizes interest at the same time.

CFPB guidance says interest will not be added to principal on Direct Loans during forbearance, while some federal loans not owned by the Department of Education may capitalize it. Current Federal Student Aid guidance identifies exceptions for some Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) loans not managed by the Department of Education. Ask your servicer to identify your exact program and state whether accrued interest will capitalize during the pause, at its end, or under another event. Get that answer in writing.

Forgiveness and discharge progress

A deferment or forbearance can affect progress toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), income-driven repayment (IDR) discharge, or another forgiveness or discharge program. The effect depends on the specific program, loan type and period. Before accepting a pause, ask whether each month will count toward your required qualifying months and whether any form, certification or later payment is needed. Federal Student Aid specifically advises checking repayment plans and the effect of short-term relief on forgiveness progress.

A pause is not permission to miss an unapproved payment

If you stop paying before the effective date is confirmed, the account can become delinquent even though a request is pending. Delinquency can create separate consequences from the interest cost of an approved pause. Keep records of your request, confirmation number, approval notice, effective dates and the next payment due.

When deferment may make sense

You meet a defined federal qualifying reason

Deferment is designed for circumstances such as active-duty military service or reenrollment in school, among other federal categories. Eligibility, documentation and maximum periods differ by category. Use the reason that actually applies to you and ask which form or evidence the servicer requires; do not select a category simply because it sounds similar to your situation.

You have subsidized federal loans

If an eligible deferment covers a subsidized federal loan, the normal interest benefit can make it less costly than forbearance for the same period. The benefit does not automatically extend to unsubsidized loans in the same account, so ask the servicer to separate the treatment of each loan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can manage interest on unsubsidized loans

Deferment can still be useful for an unsubsidized loan when the qualifying event is genuine and the pause prevents a missed payment. Plan for the interest that accrues. Ask whether making voluntary interest payments during the deferment is allowed, how those payments will be allocated, and what happens to any remaining unpaid interest when the deferment ends.

When forbearance may make sense

You need immediate, temporary relief

Forbearance may fit a short-term cash-flow problem when you do not qualify for, cannot document, or cannot use a suitable deferment. It can prevent an unaffordable bill from turning into missed payments if the servicer approves it before the due date.

A reduced payment is better than a complete pause

Some forbearance arrangements reduce the required payment rather than setting it to zero. A reduced payment can preserve cash while limiting the amount of unpaid interest compared with a full pause. Confirm the exact payment, start date, end date and whether the arrangement renews automatically.

You understand the interest trade-off

Interest generally continues on both subsidized and unsubsidized federal loans during forbearance. For that reason, forbearance is usually a short-term tool, not a solution to a payment that will remain unaffordable for many months. Ask whether another repayment plan can address the underlying problem at a lower long-term cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a repayment plan may be better than either pause

Federal Student Aid’s July 2026 payment-preparation guidance says, “If you’ve applied for an IDR plan but you still can’t afford your payment, you can request to temporarily pause or lower your payments through short-term relief (deferment or forbearance).” That ordering matters: review available repayment plans before treating a pause as the default answer.

An income-driven or other repayment plan may be more appropriate when your income or expenses make the standard payment unaffordable beyond a brief disruption. Plan eligibility and terms change, and not every borrower qualifies for every option. Ask the servicer to compare the plans available for each of your federal loans with deferment and forbearance, including the projected payment, the months that may count toward forgiveness, and what happens to unpaid interest.

If you have already applied for an IDR plan but cannot afford the payment while the application is processed, ask about temporary relief and continue paying until the servicer confirms the approved arrangement. Federal Student Aid’s guidance is available in How To Prepare for Student Loan Payments.

How to request relief without creating a new problem

  1. Identify every loan. Determine whether each loan is federal or private. For federal loans, record the program, servicer, current balance and whether it is subsidized or unsubsidized. Your Federal Student Aid account dashboard and servicer can help you assemble this list.
  2. Describe the problem and the time horizon. Tell the servicer whether the issue is a qualifying event, a temporary income interruption, a recurring affordability problem or an urgent bill due now. A short-term event and a long-term affordability gap may call for different solutions.
  3. Request a side-by-side explanation. Ask which deferment categories you qualify for, which forbearance types are available, and which repayment plans you could use. Request the answer separately for loans with different programs or subsidy status.
  4. Get the material terms in writing. Confirm eligibility, the approval date, the start and end dates, the amount due during processing, the interest rate, whether interest accrues, whether it capitalizes, the next payment date and the effect on any forgiveness or discharge program.
  5. Continue payments until approval. Do not rely on an application receipt or a verbal promise. Keep paying the required amount unless the servicer confirms that the obligation has changed.
  6. Check the account after approval. Verify that the status, due date and payment amount match the written notice. Save statements showing the accrued interest and any payment you made during the transition.
  7. Prepare for the end date. Before the pause expires, ask when billing resumes, whether the payment changes, how accrued interest will be handled and whether a new application is required. If your financial problem continues, start the next request early rather than waiting for a missed payment.

Private student loans follow the contract

A private lender may offer deferment, forbearance, a reduced payment, a modified repayment schedule or none of these. Interest treatment, capitalization, fees, eligibility, duration and approval standards vary by lender and contract. Federal rules do not guarantee private-loan relief.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CFPB’s page on forbearance or deferment for private student loans recommends contacting the lender early. Ask these questions before stopping payment:

  • Is the option called deferment, forbearance, hardship assistance or something else?
  • Is approval automatic under a stated condition or discretionary?
  • How long does it last, and can it be renewed?
  • Does interest accrue on the whole balance?
  • Is accrued interest added to principal, and when?
  • Are there fees or a minimum payment?
  • Will the arrangement affect a co-signer, credit reporting or another borrower obligation?
  • Does the lender offer a longer-term modified payment plan?

Continue payments until the private lender confirms the arrangement and its effective date. Keep the agreement and later statements together; private contracts can differ even between loans from the same lender.

Decision guide: which option fits common situations?

You are enrolled in school or on qualifying military duty

Ask first about the applicable federal deferment. If you have subsidized loans, confirm the interest benefit. For unsubsidized loans, decide how you will handle accruing interest and verify the effect on forgiveness progress.

Your income will drop for a few weeks or months

Ask whether a reduced-payment forbearance or a repayment-plan adjustment can cover the gap. Compare the interest cost and forgiveness effect before choosing a full pause. Apply early enough for approval before the next due date.

Your payment is unaffordable indefinitely

A series of short pauses can leave you with accruing interest and no durable payment solution. Request a review of current federal repayment plans first. Use deferment or forbearance only as temporary relief while you address the longer-term payment.

You are close to a forgiveness or discharge milestone

Do not assume a pause month counts. Ask the program administrator or servicer how the exact deferment or forbearance period will be treated, and keep written confirmation before accepting it.

You cannot tell whether the loan is federal

Check your Federal Student Aid account and recent statements, then call the listed servicer. Do not apply a federal rule—such as the treatment of subsidized-loan interest during deferment—to a private loan until the contract confirms it.

Questions to ask your servicer

Use this checklist during a call or secure message:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which loans qualify for deferment, and what documentation is required?
  • Which forbearance types are available, and is approval mandatory or discretionary?
  • What is the exact start date and end date?
  • What payment, if any, is due while the request is pending?
  • Will interest accrue on each loan during the period?
  • Will unpaid interest capitalize, and on what date or event?
  • How much interest do you currently project through the end date?
  • Will the period count toward my specific forgiveness or discharge program?
  • What payment and due date will apply when the pause ends?
  • Is a repayment plan or reduced-payment option available instead?

How to judge the total cost

Compare options using your own loan records rather than a generic estimate. For each loan, write down the current principal, interest rate, subsidy status, expected pause length and any forgiveness requirement. Then obtain the servicer’s written estimate of interest through the end date and its capitalization policy.

The lowest immediate payment is not necessarily the lowest total cost. A deferment on a subsidized federal loan may avoid interest during the eligible period. A deferment on an unsubsidized loan and any federal forbearance generally add interest. Capitalization can increase the balance used for future interest calculations, while a pause that does not count toward forgiveness can extend the time you must remain in the program. Compare all three effects before choosing.

Common mistakes and how to prevent them

  • Stopping payment before approval: Continue paying until the servicer confirms the effective date.
  • Assuming “deferment” means no interest: Check whether each loan is subsidized and ask about unsubsidized balances.
  • Assuming forbearance is interest-free: Federal forbearance generally accrues interest on subsidized and unsubsidized loans.
  • Assuming capitalization is identical for every federal loan: Confirm the exact program, especially if the loan is not a Department of Education-owned Direct Loan.
  • Ignoring forgiveness rules: Verify whether the period counts toward your specific PSLF, IDR discharge or other program.
  • Using repeated short-term pauses for a long-term problem: Compare repayment plans before renewing relief.
  • Applying federal assumptions to a private loan: Read the contract and obtain the private lender’s written terms.
  • Failing to track the end date: Calendar the date shown in the approval notice and contact the servicer before billing resumes.
