Stocks and bonds can behave very differently in a downturn, but bonds are not a guaranteed offset when shares fall. A stock is an ownership claim whose value depends heavily on expected business profits and investor risk appetite. A bond is a lending claim with stated interest and repayment terms, but its market price changes with interest rates, inflation expectations, credit risk and liquidity. Whether bonds cushion a portfolio depends on what caused the selloff and on which bonds you own.
This is general U.S.-oriented education, not a personal allocation recommendation. The useful question is not whether bonds are universally “safe,” but which risks your particular stock and bond holdings carry and whether those risks are likely to respond differently to the same shock.

Stocks represent ownership
When you buy a common stock, you acquire an ownership interest in a company. Your potential return comes mainly from changes in the company’s value and, when declared, dividends. There is no promised repayment date or fixed return. Shareholders participate in business growth, but they also absorb the consequences of weaker sales, shrinking profit margins, competitive threats, lawsuits, management problems and a higher required return for taking risk.

Because the market continually prices expected future cash flows, stocks can fall before an economic downturn appears in official data. Investors may cut valuations when they expect lower profits, slower demand or a greater chance of recession. A stock can decline even when the company remains profitable, simply because the price previously assumed stronger results.

Bonds represent lending
A bond is a debt claim. The issuer promises specified interest payments and repayment of principal according to the bond’s terms, subject to its ability to pay. A U.S. Treasury, municipality or corporation can issue debt, and each issuer has a different capacity to meet those obligations. Bondholders generally stand ahead of common shareholders in a company’s capital structure if the issuer fails, but repayment is not guaranteed by the label “bond.”
If you hold an individual bond until maturity, you normally receive the contractual principal then, provided the issuer does not default and you meet any applicable conditions. The bond’s market value can still move substantially before maturity. Selling early exposes you to the price prevailing at that time, which may be above or below what you paid.
What a downturn actually does to each asset class
A recession and a market selloff are not the same event
An economic downturn describes weakening economic activity. A market selloff describes falling asset prices. Markets often react to expectations months before data confirm a recession, and prices can recover while economic conditions remain weak. The trigger may be a central-bank policy change, an inflation shock, a banking problem, a geopolitical event or a sudden reassessment of corporate earnings.

Stock prices generally decline when investors mark down expected profits or demand more compensation for risk. Higher interest rates can also reduce the present value of distant earnings, which can weigh particularly heavily on companies whose anticipated cash flows are far in the future. In a recession, expectations for revenue, margins and dividends may all be revised lower at once.
Why bonds can fall at the same time
Most existing fixed-rate bonds become less attractive when newly issued bonds offer higher yields. Their prices therefore generally fall until their yields are competitive with new issues. The SEC’s Investor.gov explanation states: “Rising interest rates will make newly issued bonds more appealing to investors because the newer bonds will have a higher rate of interest than older ones.”

Corporate bonds can face a second pressure. If investors believe a company is less able to repay, they demand a larger credit spread over a comparable government bond. The spread widening lowers the price of the existing corporate bond, even if government yields are unchanged. High-yield debt is especially exposed to this credit-cycle risk and should not be treated as a low-volatility substitute for stocks.
Comparison: stocks versus bonds in a portfolio
| Feature | Stocks | Bonds |
|---|---|---|
| Claim on issuer | Ownership interest | Debt claim with contractual interest and principal terms |
| Main return sources | Change in company value and possible dividends | Interest, repayment at maturity and changes in market price |
| Short-term volatility | Generally higher for broad categories; individual shares can be far more volatile | Generally lower than stocks, but duration, credit quality and liquidity can produce substantial declines |
| Interest-rate sensitivity | Indirect, through valuation, financing costs and economic growth | Direct for fixed-rate issues; prices generally fall when market yields rise |
| Inflation exposure | Companies may eventually raise prices, but margins and valuations can suffer | Fixed payments lose purchasing power when inflation rises; inflation-linked issues have different behavior |
| Credit or default exposure | Business failure can eliminate equity value | Issuer default can reduce or eliminate promised payments; corporate and high-yield bonds carry more credit risk than high-quality government debt |
| Typical portfolio role | Long-term growth and participation in business profits | Income, capital preservation goals and diversification, depending on the issue or fund |
The SEC summarizes the broad trade-off this way: “Bonds are generally less volatile than stocks but offer more modest returns.” That is a category-level description, not a promise about every bond or every period. A long-duration government bond, a distressed corporate bond and a short-term Treasury bill can behave very differently.

No. Stocks and bonds can decline together when the dominant shock pushes both expected returns higher. An inflation surge followed by aggressive monetary tightening is one example: stock valuations can contract while bond yields rise and bond prices fall. In its review of financial conditions in 2022, the Federal Reserve described equity prices and long-term Treasury prices declining as yields rose, while corporate credit spreads widened.
The relationship between stocks and nominal bonds changes with the economic backdrop. When growth fears dominate and inflation is subdued, investors may seek high-quality government bonds as stocks weaken, producing a diversification benefit. When inflation is the primary concern, the same bonds may sell off alongside equities. Federal Reserve research on inflation news and risky-asset prices describes this relationship as time-varying; it should not be turned into a forecast that correlation will always be negative or positive.
Diversification reduces concentration in one risk source, but it cannot ensure that a portfolio avoids losses. A portfolio holding only stocks can be exposed primarily to business earnings and equity valuation risk. A portfolio holding stocks plus long-duration corporate bonds may still be heavily exposed to growth, rates and credit at the same time.

Why did my bond fund lose money when the stock market fell?
A bond fund owns a changing portfolio of bonds and prices its shares at the current market value of those holdings. It does not mature as a single bond does. When yields rise, the fund’s existing bonds are marked down, and the fund’s net asset value can fall even though each bond continues to make its scheduled coupon payment.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Duration and interest-rate sensitivity
Duration is an approximate measure of how much a bond or bond fund’s price may change for a given change in yields. All else equal, a fund with longer duration tends to lose more when yields rise and gain more when yields fall than a short-duration fund. The duration shown in a fund’s disclosures is an estimate, not a guaranteed result, because credit spreads, yield-curve changes and cash flows also matter.
Credit quality and spreads
A fund concentrated in corporate or high-yield debt can lose value when investors become more concerned about defaults or demand wider spreads. That loss can occur even if Treasury yields decline. Review the fund’s credit-quality distribution, sector concentrations and exposure to issuers whose finances are sensitive to a recession.
Distributions do not equal a total return
Interest distributions may continue while the fund’s share price falls. To evaluate the result, consider total return: income plus the change in the share price, after expenses. A higher distribution rate does not eliminate duration, credit, inflation or liquidity risk.
Are bonds safer than stocks during a recession?
“Safer” depends on the risk being measured and the period being considered. High-quality, short-maturity government debt usually has less price volatility and less default risk than stocks. A long-maturity bond can still suffer a large market-value decline when rates rise. A lower-quality corporate or high-yield bond can fall sharply when recession raises default concerns. An individual bond held to maturity may provide a clearer repayment schedule than a fund share, but only if the issuer remains able to pay.

Stocks have historically offered greater long-run return potential than bonds as broad categories, while also experiencing larger short-term swings. The SEC’s Investor.gov guide notes that large-company stocks as a group have lost money on average about one out of every three years. That is a general historical statement from the guide, not a recession forecast or a guarantee about any particular index.
What happens when interest rates rise?
- Existing fixed-rate bond prices generally fall. Their coupons are less attractive relative to newly issued debt.
- New bonds can eventually offer higher income. Reinvestment opportunities improve as older securities mature or as new contributions are invested.
- Stock valuations may also come under pressure. Higher discount rates reduce the present value of future earnings, and borrowing costs can slow business activity.
- Credit spreads may move independently. If investors become more worried about corporate repayment, corporate bonds can fall more than government bonds with similar duration.
- The effect depends on maturity. Shorter-maturity bonds generally have less immediate price sensitivity than longer-maturity bonds, though their income resets sooner as securities mature.
A rising-rate period can therefore produce simultaneous losses in stocks and bonds, particularly when rates rise because of inflation rather than improving real growth. It can also improve the prospective income available from bonds after the adjustment, but that future benefit does not erase a current market-value loss.
Different bonds are not interchangeable
| Bond category | Primary risks in a downturn | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. Treasury securities | Interest-rate and inflation risk; generally low direct default risk for Treasury obligations | Maturity, duration, yield-curve exposure and whether you may need to sell before maturity |
| Municipal bonds | Interest-rate, credit, economic-base and liquidity risks; treatment can vary by issuer and jurisdiction | Issuer finances, insurance if any, maturity, call provisions and your tax circumstances |
| Investment-grade corporate bonds | Interest-rate risk plus the possibility of wider credit spreads and downgrades | Industry concentration, credit ratings, duration, maturity and liquidity |
| High-yield bonds | Greater default, downgrade and spread risk; can behave more like risky assets in a recession | Default exposure, issuer concentration, recovery assumptions, duration and fund liquidity |
Labels such as “core bond,” “income” or “short term” are not enough to identify the risk. Read the holdings and the latest duration, maturity, credit-quality and liquidity disclosures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Individual bonds versus bond funds
Individual bond
An individual bond has a stated coupon, maturity date and repayment obligation. If you hold it to maturity, you can plan around those terms, but the issuer can default, call the bond early where permitted, or repay in a way that does not preserve your purchasing power. Selling before maturity exposes you to the market price, and a thinly traded issue may be difficult or costly to sell.

Bond fund or exchange-traded fund
A fund spreads exposure across many issues and normally maintains an ongoing portfolio rather than reaching one maturity date. Its share price reflects current market values, expenses, cash flows, trading conditions and portfolio changes. A fund can be useful for diversification and liquidity, but it does not promise to return a fixed principal amount on a particular date.

When comparing a bond fund with an individual bond, check whether the fund’s duration matches the time until you need the money, whether its credit exposure matches your tolerance for loss and whether its liquidity could deteriorate in stressed markets.
Historical episodes show why the answer is conditional
2008: a powerful diversification example
In a 2019 speech, Federal Reserve Vice Chair Richard Clarida cited an illustrative calendar-year comparison: the S&P 500 total return was around minus 37 percent in 2008, while the on-the-run 30-year Treasury bond total return was about 38 percent. This was one historical episode involving a specific equity index and a specific Treasury instrument. It is not a universal hedge ratio and does not establish what stocks and bonds will do in the next downturn.
2022: stocks and long Treasuries both weakened
The Federal Reserve’s financial stability review published in 2023 described 2022 as a period in which equity prices and long-term Treasury prices declined as yields rose, with corporate credit spreads widening. Inflation and rapid monetary tightening created a different environment from 2008. The contrast demonstrates why the cause of the downturn and the bond exposure you own matter more than the word “downturn” by itself.
How to assess a stock-and-bond portfolio before or during a selloff
- Identify the stock risks. Note whether your equity exposure is broad or concentrated in one company, sector, country, style or market-cap segment.
- List every bond exposure. Separate government, municipal, investment-grade corporate and high-yield holdings instead of treating them as one asset class.
- Check duration and maturity. Longer duration means greater sensitivity to a rate shock. Compare the duration with the date you expect to spend the money.
- Review credit quality. Look for ratings distribution, issuer concentration, sector exposure and any meaningful below-investment-grade allocation.
- Consider inflation risk. Fixed nominal payments may lose purchasing power when inflation remains high. Do not assume a nominal bond will protect real spending power.
- Assess liquidity needs. Money needed soon should not depend on selling a volatile security at an unknown price.
- Match the mix to your tolerance for loss. Allocation is personal and depends on time horizon, financial circumstances and ability to remain invested through declines.
- Set a review rule before emotions peak. Rebalancing, if appropriate for your plan, should follow a preselected policy rather than a prediction about the next market move.
Common mistakes during a downturn
- Assuming every bond is a safe haven. High-yield and long-duration bonds can carry substantial equity-like or rate risk.
- Confusing a fund’s distribution with guaranteed principal. A fund share has no maturity promise and its price can fall.
- Using a historical episode as a rule. The 2008 stock-and-Treasury result cannot be applied mechanically to an inflation-driven shock such as 2022.
- Ignoring issuer credit risk. Holding an individual bond to maturity does not remove the possibility of default.
- Looking only at headline percentages. Two portfolios with the same stock-and-bond split can have very different duration, credit and liquidity exposures.
- Changing an allocation solely because prices moved. A short-term market forecast is not a substitute for a plan tied to when the money is needed.
A practical decision framework
If your priority is long-term growth and you can tolerate large interim losses, stocks may provide the principal growth engine, but their prices can remain depressed for an uncertain period. If your priority is spending stability over a nearer horizon, high-quality bonds with maturities aligned to expected cash needs may reduce reliance on selling stocks after a decline, though their market values can still fluctuate.
If the downturn is driven mainly by falling growth and contained inflation, high-quality government bonds may diversify stocks more effectively than lower-quality credit. If inflation and interest rates are rising, even government bonds can lose value, while corporate and high-yield bonds may face both rate and credit pressure. If you cannot identify which shock dominates, avoid assuming that a single stock-to-bond ratio guarantees protection; inspect the actual exposures and maintain liquidity for near-term obligations.
The most defensible portfolio role for bonds is therefore conditional: they can provide income, a maturity-based source of funds and diversification from some equity risks, but they cannot guarantee gains when stocks fall or prevent losses across all downturns.
