For most addresses that qualify for a strong, uncongested signal, 5G Home Internet is the better first choice. Current provider disclosures show higher potential speeds and lower latency than Starlink, which matters for gaming, video calls, work VPNs and large uploads. Starlink is usually the better answer when 5G Home is unavailable, the cellular signal at the property is weak, or a rural home can install a dish with a clear view of the sky.
The deciding factor is not the coverage map or the advertised maximum. Check both services at your exact address, evaluate evening performance, and compare equipment, installation, data terms and total monthly cost before switching.

Start with an exact-address availability check
Enter the complete service address into each provider’s home-internet checker before comparing speed tiers. A location that receives 5G on a phone is not automatically eligible for fixed 5G Home service. Eligibility can depend on tower capacity, signal quality, the receiver’s position, network planning and whether the provider has opened that cell for residential subscriptions.

How the published performance compares
The following figures are current provider disclosures accessed in 2026. They describe typical or plan-specific ranges under stated conditions; they are not guarantees for an individual address.
| Connection and disclosure | Download | Upload | Land latency | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starlink residential specifications | 25–220 Mbps typical | 5–20 Mbps typical | 25–60 ms typical | Performance varies by location, time of day, congestion and plan priority; remote locations can exceed 100 ms. |
| T-Mobile 5G Home All-In | 170–498 Mbps typical | 12–55 Mbps typical | 16–28 ms typical | The cited All-In plan is listed at $80 per month; local network conditions and management affect results. |
| Verizon 5G Home, plan up to 100 Mbps | 25–85 Mbps | 5–10 Mbps | 50–70 ms | Address-dependent range in Verizon’s broadband performance disclosure. |
| Verizon 5G Home, plan up to 300 Mbps | 85–300 Mbps | 10–20 Mbps | 35–55 ms | Address-dependent range in Verizon’s broadband performance disclosure. |
Download speed
When both services operate normally, the published T-Mobile range is substantially higher than Starlink’s typical range. Verizon’s higher tier can also exceed Starlink’s typical download range, while its lower tier overlaps it. Download speed controls how quickly a household can fetch large files, update games or start a high-resolution stream, but it is only one part of the decision.
Upload speed
Upload capacity affects cloud backups, sending large video files, livestreaming, security-camera uploads and how well several people can use video calls at once. Starlink lists 5–20 Mbps typical upload. T-Mobile lists 12–55 Mbps, and Verizon lists 5–10 Mbps on its up-to-100-Mbps plan and 10–20 Mbps on its up-to-300-Mbps plan. If your work involves frequent large uploads, compare the upper and lower ends of the ranges rather than the download headline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLatency and responsiveness
Latency is the round-trip delay before data begins moving. Lower latency makes games feel more responsive and reduces conversational lag in calls and remote desktops. T-Mobile’s disclosed 16–28 ms range is the lowest of the published figures. Verizon’s disclosed ranges are 35–55 ms for the up-to-300-Mbps plan and 50–70 ms for the up-to-100-Mbps plan. Starlink’s typical land latency is 25–60 ms, although remote locations can exceed 100 ms. These are not equivalent to a guarantee for every server or application: Wi-Fi, routing, the destination server and local congestion can add delay.
Why performance changes during the day
Both technologies share capacity with other customers. Starlink warns that speeds can fall during high-use periods and vary according to location and plan priority. Cellular providers similarly explain that local network characteristics, traffic management and external conditions affect 5G Home speeds. A speed test at 10 a.m. may say little about a household’s experience at 8 p.m.

Test the hours that matter
- Run several tests in the morning, late afternoon and evening for at least three days.
- Test over Ethernet where possible, then repeat over the Wi-Fi network used by your household.
- Record download, upload, ping and any visible packet-loss or jitter measurement.
- Repeat while another household member streams video or uploads a large file.
- Keep the results by date and time so you can compare both providers under similar demand.
Do not treat one unusually high test as proof of normal service, and do not treat one poor test as proof that the technology cannot work. Look for a stable pattern during your busiest hours.
Installation and physical requirements
What Starlink requires
Starlink uses a user terminal, router, power supply and mount. The terminal needs an unobstructed view of the sky so it can maintain links with passing satellites. Roofs, chimneys, trees, nearby buildings and terrain can block parts of that view. The supplied equipment can be placed temporarily for testing, but a permanent installation may require a compatible pole, eave or roof mount and a safe cable route into the home.
Use the provider’s obstruction-checking process from the intended mounting position before committing to drilling or hiring an installer. A site that looks open from ground level can still produce repeated dropouts when branches or a roofline enter the terminal’s field of view. A difficult roof, tall trees or uncertain structural attachment point is a reason to price a professional site survey or installation.
What 5G Home requires
5G Home generally uses an indoor router, an outdoor receiver, or a combined gateway, depending on the provider and address. Setup can be plug-and-play where the signal reaches the recommended placement, but the service still needs a strong connection to a suitable tower. Moving the gateway to a window or higher location can change results, while a thick wall, metal roof, low-e glass, terrain or distance from the tower can weaken the signal.
Because the receiver is tied to the approved service address, taking a 5G Home gateway to another house may not work or may violate the service terms. Confirm whether the provider permits relocation before treating it as a portable connection.

A cheaper plan can cost more if it requires a roof installation or replacement hardware.
Which connection fits common household uses?
Online gaming
Choose 5G Home when the address qualifies for a stable signal and the measured evening latency is low. The published T-Mobile range is particularly favorable. Verizon’s lower-tier latency range may still be playable, but consistency matters more than a single ping result. Starlink can support many games, yet its latency is more variable and remote locations may exceed 100 ms. Satellite routing and congestion can produce spikes that are noticeable in competitive games.
For any provider, connect the gaming device by Ethernet or a strong 5-GHz or newer Wi-Fi band, stop large background uploads, and test the actual game servers you use. A fast speed-test result cannot compensate for packet loss or jitter.
Video calls and remote work
Both services can support ordinary video meetings when upload capacity is stable. 5G Home usually offers more headroom for several simultaneous calls because its published upload ranges are higher, especially on T-Mobile. Starlink is workable where the dish has a clear sky view, but obstructions or evening congestion can cause brief interruptions. If your employer requires a low-latency VPN, remote desktop or voice-quality monitoring, test those applications during working hours rather than relying on a generic speed test.
Streaming television
One high-definition stream uses far less capacity than the published ranges of either technology. The challenge is sustained performance when several televisions, phones and game consoles are active at once. Starlink’s unlimited residential data language can make it practical for heavy households, but congestion can still reduce speed. 5G Home’s lower latency and higher potential throughput generally provide more reserve when the local signal is strong.

Large uploads, creators and cloud backups
Upload speed is the deciding metric. T-Mobile’s 12–55 Mbps disclosure offers the greatest potential of the figures listed. Verizon’s 5–10 Mbps or 10–20 Mbps ranges may be sufficient for routine backups but can make multi-gigabyte uploads lengthy. Starlink’s 5–20 Mbps typical upload can work for occasional files, while frequent video production or livestreaming requires testing sustained upload performance and stability at the actual address.
Rural and remote homes
Starlink is designed for locations where wired broadband and fixed wireless are unavailable or unreliable, provided the property has a suitable sky view. 5G Home can serve rural areas near a capable tower, but rural mobile coverage alone does not establish home-service eligibility. If the nearest tower is distant or congested, the address may be rejected or perform below the advertised range.
Backup connectivity
Starlink can be a valuable backup where a primary wired or cellular connection fails, but the terminal needs power and a clear sky view. A second 5G Home service can diversify a household’s access only if it uses a sufficiently independent tower and network path. Compare the cost of keeping two subscriptions with the financial impact of an outage before buying a backup solely for emergencies.

3. Define your minimum acceptable performance
- Set a latency target for gaming, voice calls or remote desktop work.
- Set an upload target for backups, livestreaming and media production.
- Estimate how many simultaneous streams, calls and downloads your household creates.
- Decide whether brief outages are acceptable or whether you need a second connection.
4. Compare the complete financial commitment
Put monthly service, equipment, installation, mounts, taxes, shipping and cancellation costs in one worksheet. For Starlink, include any permanent mounting work. For 5G Home, include the cost after any promotional period and verify whether the included router must be returned.
5. Use a trial or return period strategically
If both providers offer a trial or return window, schedule tests during your busiest evening hours and at the locations where the equipment will remain. Measure real applications, not just a single speed test. Keep packaging and document the equipment condition until you decide.
6. Switch only after the replacement proves reliable
Do not cancel an existing connection before the new service has passed several days of evening tests, work calls, gaming sessions and large downloads or uploads. Confirm the cancellation date, final bill, equipment-return instructions and any remaining hardware balance.
Troubleshooting weak results
Starlink speed drops or interruptions
- Check the terminal’s obstruction view and inspect for new foliage, construction or shifted equipment.
- Verify that the terminal, router and power supply use the recommended connections and remain within their operating conditions.
- Compare wired and Wi-Fi tests to separate satellite performance from in-home wireless problems.
- Record whether the issue appears at the same busy time each day, which may indicate congestion rather than a hardware fault.
- Reconsider the mount or hire qualified help if the only viable location has recurring obstructions or unsafe access.
5G Home speed or signal problems
- Move the gateway or receiver to the provider-recommended window or elevated position, then allow enough time for the network to reconnect.
- Test with Ethernet to rule out Wi-Fi interference and household placement issues.
- Compare results at different times; a consistent evening decline can indicate local cell congestion.
- Ask the provider to confirm that the equipment is provisioned for the correct service address and plan.
- If the signal remains weak, ask whether a different receiver placement or eligible plan tier is available before assuming a faster advertised tier will solve it.
The bottom-line choice
Choose 5G Home first when the exact address is eligible and testing shows a strong, stable signal during your busiest hours. The published figures generally mean lower latency and higher potential throughput, which favors gaming, calls, uploads and households with several active users.
Choose Starlink when 5G Home is unavailable or unreliable and you can provide an unobstructed dish location. It extends broadband to many remote properties, but it demands more installation planning and can experience greater latency and congestion variability.
If both are available, the better connection is the one that delivers dependable evening performance at the lower complete cost for your workload. Provider ranges describe expected service, not a guarantee for your home, so let address-specific testing and return terms make the final decision.
