For U.S. Starbucks Rewards members under the program effective March 10, 2026, you can earn both rewards on one purchase. Scan your Starbucks Rewards barcode (or use a linked payment method in the app), then pay with a credit card. Starbucks awards Stars according to your membership level—not according to whether you paid with cash, a Starbucks Card, debit, credit or a mobile wallet at a participating store. Your card issuer can award its own points or cash back separately.
That makes the strongest general setup conditional rather than universal: scan for Starbucks Stars and use the credit card whose rewards you personally value. Preloading a Starbucks Card is optional and mainly relevant for the separate digital-reload bonus or convenience. The right choice depends on your status, the redemption you will actually use, your card’s current terms and whether your store participates in the barcode-payment process.

How Starbucks earning works after the March 10, 2026 change
Starbucks’ U.S. terms and FAQ changed the old payment-centered assumption. The company says, “Starting March 10, your status level will determine your earn rate, not your method of payment.” The current Starbucks Rewards Terms of Use and official FAQ describe the rules for the United States; other countries can use different programs.
Your level sets the base Stars rate
| Membership level | Stars earned per eligible dollar | Qualification in the applicable 12-month period |
|---|---|---|
| Green | 1 Star | Entry level |
| Gold | 1.2 Stars | 500 Stars |
| Reserve | 1.7 Stars | 2,500 Stars after reaching Gold |
Gold and Reserve are status levels, not permanent multipliers that everyone receives immediately. Starbucks says status benefits run for 12 months and require the applicable earning activity to maintain them. The company’s 2026 announcement provides the 500-Star Gold and 2,500-Star Reserve thresholds; see the investor-relations release for the program announcement.

Paying by credit card does not replace the Starbucks earn
At a participating store, open the Starbucks app and present your membership barcode before paying. Tell the barista you will pay separately if needed, scan the barcode, and then use your credit card at the terminal. The same purchase can therefore produce Stars in your Starbucks account and issuer rewards on your card account.
You can also use a linked payment method in the app. The terms allow earning through a Starbucks Card, a linked payment method, or by scanning the membership barcode and paying with cash, credit, debit or a mobile wallet. A participating location may limit Stars to Starbucks Card transactions, so the barcode-and-card method is not an absolute guarantee at every store. If Stars do not appear, keep the receipt and check the transaction against the current terms.
What each side of the comparison actually earns
Starbucks Stars
Stars are Starbucks’ loyalty currency. At Green, a $10 eligible purchase earns 10 Stars; at Gold it earns 12 Stars; at Reserve it earns 17 Stars. Starbucks calculates the rate from eligible dollars, so the displayed total can reflect the program’s handling of cents and excluded amounts rather than simply multiplying the menu price.

Your card’s rewards are a separate contract with the card issuer. The issuer may award points, miles or cash back according to that card’s category rules, annual-fee structure, caps, redemption choices and current terms. The material available for this comparison does not establish one representative card rate or a universal value for issuer points, so there is no honest single percentage that beats Starbucks for every reader.
Use this calculation with your own statement terms:
issuer value = eligible purchase amount × card earn rate × the value you realize per point (if the card uses points)

For example, a hypothetical card that pays 2% cash back would return $0.20 on a $10 eligible purchase. That is only an arithmetic illustration; verify your card’s current rate, bonus-category restrictions, spending caps and redemption value before using it in the comparison.
The two streams can stack
There is no need to choose between Stars and card rewards when your store accepts barcode scanning followed by credit-card payment. A $10 eligible purchase at Green can generate 10 Stars plus whatever your card’s terms award on $10. At Gold the Starbucks portion is 12 Stars, and at Reserve it is 17 Stars. Paying directly with the card does not forfeit the Starbucks portion when the transaction is processed through the eligible barcode flow.
How much a Starbucks Star is worth
Stars do not have one fixed cash price. The current U.S. terms list redemption tiers, eligible products and location limits. The following values are the stated reward amounts, not a promise that every store offers every tier:
| Stars required | Stated reward | Arithmetic value of the stated reward | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | $1 off an eligible modifier | 4 cents per Star | Only a qualifying modifier; eligibility rules apply |
| 60 | $2 off a qualifying item | About 3.33 cents per Star | Qualifying item and store restrictions apply |
| 100 | An eligible coffee, tea, bakery item, packaged snack or certain plastic cups up to $6 | Up to 6 cents per Star when the full $6 value is used | Eligible-item, price and location limits apply |
The per-Star figures are simple divisions of the listed reward (for example, $2 ÷ 60), not a guaranteed valuation. A $6 item that qualifies for the 100-Star tier realizes the full 6 cents per Star; a cheaper item realizes less. Some locations offer fewer redemption tiers, and the full terms contain exclusions, so check the app or store before ordering.
Illustrative Starbucks value by status
The table below applies the published earn rates to a $10 eligible purchase. It shows what the Stars could represent if you later redeem them at a particular tier; it does not predict which item you will buy or claim that Stars are cash.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Status | Stars from $10 | Value at the 25-Star/$1 tier | Value at the 60-Star/$2 tier | Value at the 100-Star/$6 tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Green | 10 | About $0.40 when enough Stars are accumulated | About $0.33 | About $0.60 |
| Gold | 12 | About $0.48 | $0.40 | $0.72 |
| Reserve | 17 | About $0.68 | About $0.57 | $1.02 |
These are accumulated-Star illustrations: one $10 visit does not itself unlock a 25-, 60- or 100-Star reward. The realized percentage depends on the eligible product, the tier you select and whether you use all of the reward’s stated value.

Credit card versus Starbucks Card: the practical decision
Use the credit card directly when you value issuer rewards and flexibility
- You can scan the membership barcode first and then pay with the card, preserving the Starbucks earn at your current level.
- You avoid tying money up in a prepaid Starbucks balance.
- You retain the card’s normal protections and redemption choices, subject to the issuer’s terms.
- You can switch cards when your preferred rewards category or card terms change without moving a Starbucks balance.
Consider a digital reload only for its separate bonus or convenience
A digital Starbucks Card reload of $30 or more earns 10 bonus Stars. A reload of $50 or more earns 25 bonus Stars, with a maximum of 25 bonus Stars per transaction. These are reload bonuses; the dollars loaded are not ordinary merchandise purchases that also earn the normal status-based Stars on the amount loaded.
Reloading is therefore not required to earn the base rate. It can be rational when you will spend the balance soon, want the convenience of in-app payment, or can use the bonus without changing your spending pattern. It is less attractive when the reload leaves unused money, forces you to spend at stores that do not fit your routine, or replaces a card purchase whose issuer rewards you value.
A simple break-even way to think about a reload
- Identify the reload bonus: 10 Stars at the $30 threshold or 25 Stars at the $50 threshold.
- Estimate the value you actually receive from those Stars using a redemption tier you can use, not the highest theoretical tier.
- Compare that value with the issuer rewards you would have received by paying the same amount directly with your card.
- Subtract the opportunity cost of unused balance and any inconvenience from carrying prepaid funds.
- Reload only if the resulting benefit is positive and you expect to use the balance before terms or your spending habits change.
Because card rewards differ by issuer and Stars have tiered redemption values, the break-even result is personal. A reload bonus can improve the Starbucks side, but it does not automatically beat paying directly with a rewarding card.

Which purchases earn Stars—and which do not
The current U.S. terms cover eligible purchases at participating stores and identify amounts that do not earn Stars. Among the exclusions are alcohol, Starbucks Card purchases and reloads (apart from the stated reload bonus), taxes, tips, donations and certain fees. A receipt total can therefore be higher than the dollar amount used to calculate Stars.
Store participation matters as well. Some participating stores may award Stars only for Starbucks Card transactions, and location-specific eligible products can affect both earning and redemption. Before relying on a credit-card scan, confirm that the store appears in the app’s participating-store flow or ask at the register.
Status, expiration and the value of timing
Green Stars
Green-level Stars generally expire six months after the calendar month in which they were earned. The terms provide a one-month extension through a qualifying activity. If you rarely visit Starbucks, check the expiration display in your account before saving toward a larger redemption.
Rank #4
Gold and Reserve Stars
Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire while you maintain the corresponding level. Losing the level changes the conditions, so status maintenance remains relevant even when a balance appears safe. The app’s account view and the current terms are the authority for your individual expiration date.

Moving from Green to Gold raises the published rate from 1 to 1.2 Stars per eligible dollar; Reserve raises it to 1.7. The extra Stars matter only if you can redeem them before expiration and at a tier whose eligible item you would otherwise buy. Status is valuable for a frequent customer who can use the balance, not an automatic reason to spend more to reach a threshold.
A step-by-step payment routine that captures both rewards
- Check participation. In the Starbucks app, select the store and confirm that it supports Rewards earning for your planned transaction.
- Open your membership barcode. Have the barcode ready before the register closes the order.
- Scan before payment. Ask the barista to scan the barcode; this records your account and applies your Green, Gold or Reserve rate.
- Pay with the credit card. Use the card’s physical or contactless method after the scan. If the store requires Starbucks Card payment for Stars, use the accepted Starbucks Card flow instead.
- Keep the receipt. Verify that the Stars post and that the card statement shows the expected transaction. Retain evidence if you need Starbucks support or an issuer dispute.
- Review the posted transaction. Check excluded taxes, tips, fees or products before concluding that the rate was wrong.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Paying before scanning
If the register closes the payment before your barcode is read, the purchase may not attach to your account. Ask whether the store can add the transaction through the app’s receipt-help process; if not, keep the receipt and contact Starbucks through the support channel shown in the app.
Assuming every dollar on the receipt earns
Taxes, tips, donations, certain fees and listed excluded products do not earn Stars. Recalculate using eligible purchase amounts rather than the final card charge.
Treating a reload as a normal purchase
Reload dollars do not earn the ordinary status rate merely because money was added. The applicable benefit is the 10-Star or 25-Star digital-reload bonus, subject to the threshold and per-transaction cap.

Using a theoretical Star value
The 100-Star tier can be worth up to $6 only when you redeem it for an eligible item at the full amount. If you choose a lower-priced item or a different tier, your realized value changes. Use the reward you actually plan to claim in your comparison.

Ignoring expiration
Green Stars can expire six months after the earning month unless extended by the specified activity. Review the account’s expiration notices before accumulating a balance you may not use.
Decision guide for different Starbucks customers
Occasional customer with a rewards-earning card
Scan the barcode when the store permits it and pay directly with the card. Avoid a large reload unless the 10- or 25-Star bonus is worth more to you than the card rewards and you will use the balance promptly.
Frequent customer pursuing Gold or Reserve
Track your 12-month progress and the Stars required for the next level. Continue using the barcode-and-card method where available so every eligible visit contributes both to status and to issuer rewards. Do not make extra purchases solely to chase a threshold without a realistic redemption plan.

Customer who values simple budgeting
A prepaid balance can limit spending, but it also creates unused-funds risk. Set a reload amount based on planned visits, then review the balance and expiration information in the app.
Sources and effective date
The payment and exclusion rules come from the Starbucks Rewards Terms of Use, effective March 10, 2026. The status-based rates and barcode-payment explanation are summarized in Starbucks’ Rewards FAQ. Starbucks’ qualification thresholds are also described in its 2026 rewards-program announcement. Starbucks can change rates, tiers, participating stores and exclusions, so check the current U.S. app and terms before making a high-value decision.
The practical answer
For most U.S. members, the efficient default is to scan for Starbucks Stars and pay with a credit card whose issuer rewards you value. The credit card does not lower the 1-, 1.2- or 1.7-Star rate tied to your status when the transaction is eligible. A Starbucks Card reload is an optional optimization for its fixed reload bonus or convenience, not a prerequisite for earning Stars. Your actual winner is determined by the card’s current terms, the Starbucks redemption tier you can use, store participation, exclusions and whether your Stars remain valid long enough to redeem.
