Standard Bank–OPay Talks: What’s Confirmed About the Reported Stake and Possible US IPO

Bloomberg reported on August 18, 2026, that Standard Bank was in talks to buy a stake in OPay ahead of a possible US IPO. The report did not say a deal had closed or confirm a $185 million investment. The headline claim that OPay “wins” a $185 million placement is therefore unsupported by the available reporting.

What did Bloomberg report about Standard Bank and OPay?

Bloomberg News, in a report carried by Bloomberg Law on August 18, 2026, said Standard Bank Group Ltd. was discussing a possible purchase of a stake in Opay Digital Services Ltd. The report cited people familiar with the matter who were not identified because the information was private. It described the discussions as uncertain, not as a completed investment. Read Bloomberg’s report.

Bloomberg also reported that OPay was working with Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan Chase on a possible New York listing, and described OPay as backed by SoftBank Group Corp. and Sequoia Capital. Those are claims attributed to Bloomberg’s sources, not confirmations from the companies in the available reporting.

Is the $185 million placement confirmed?

No. The available sources do not establish a $185 million investment, the currency or amount of any proposed investment, a stake percentage, a valuation, a price, or a closing date. They also do not establish that Standard Bank won a placement. Treat the amount in the supplied headline as unverified, rather than as a deal term.

An exact-phrase search found a separate 2024 announcement concerning a Standard Bank and NAMFISA N$185 million property-development loan facility in Namibia. That is unrelated to OPay; the matching number is not evidence of an OPay investment. NAMFISA’s website is not confirmation of an OPay transaction.

Is OPay going public in the United States?

The reported plan was for a possible US IPO, with Bloomberg saying OPay was working with banks on a possible New York listing. The report does not establish that OPay filed an offering, set a timetable, or completed a listing. “Preparing for a possible IPO” should not be read as confirmation that an IPO will happen.

What does Opera’s filing say about OPay’s ownership and valuation?

Opera Limited’s 2025 Form 20-F provides separate, historical context—not evidence of the Standard Bank talks. Opera reported that it held a 9.5% interest in OPay as of December 31, 2025, and recorded a $294.6 million carrying amount for that investment. Opera noted that OPay was privately held, that no active market existed for its shares, and that the estimate was uncertain. See Opera’s SEC filings.

Opera’s valuation methodology considered possible outcomes including an IPO and a private sale. Its estimated equity-value scenarios ranged from $0.2 billion to $6.0 billion. That wide range represents inputs to Opera’s valuation analysis; it is not a reported OPay transaction valuation or a price agreed with Standard Bank.

What is OPay, and how current are its operating figures?

Opera described OPay as a Nigerian-focused payments business serving consumers, merchants and agents. In a March 3, 2021 investor-relations post, Opera said it had incubated OPay in 2018. The same post reported company figures based on 2020 activity: OPay’s gross transaction volume grew 4.5 times during that year and exceeded $2 billion in December, while its point-of-sale terminals represented 20% of offline payments in Nigeria at year-end. These are historical company-reported figures, not current performance measures. Read Opera’s 2021 post.

The post also cited 185 million mobile cellular subscribers in Nigeria against a population of 201 million, using 2019 data. That subscriber figure is unrelated to the alleged $185 million placement.

How should readers assess the deal claim?

  • Reported: Bloomberg said Standard Bank was in talks to buy an OPay stake before a possible US IPO, citing unnamed sources.
  • Not established: A signed or completed investment, the amount or currency, stake size, valuation, closing date, or a definitive IPO timetable.
  • Separate context: Opera’s ownership and valuation figures are from its year-end 2025 filing and do not verify negotiations with Standard Bank.

For any later announcement, distinguish attributed media reporting from a company statement or regulatory disclosure. A transaction can be evaluated only when its status, stake, amount and currency, implied valuation, and timing are actually disclosed.
