The blockchain network—not the USDC or USDT ticker—sets the on-chain transfer fee. Choose the chain and token your recipient actually supports, hold that chain’s native gas token, and compare the current fee and confirmation time before sending. USDC and USDT representations on different chains are separate assets, so a cheap transfer is useless if the destination cannot receive or cash out that network.
What you are paying for when you send a stablecoin
A stablecoin transfer is a transaction on a particular blockchain. The network charges for the computing resources and data needed to process it; the stablecoin issuer does not set that base network charge. The same ticker can exist as different network representations, such as USDC on Ethereum, Base or Solana and USDT on Ethereum or TRON. Those representations are not interchangeable at the address level.

Before opening a send screen, identify three things: the exact token, the exact network and the destination’s deposit or wallet instructions. Selecting USDC does not by itself select Ethereum, Base or Solana. Selecting USDT does not by itself select Ethereum or TRON. The sender and recipient must use the same supported chain and token standard.

Why the ticker is a poor fee predictor
On a given chain, sending USDC and USDT generally consumes comparable transaction resources. USDC.org’s 2026 comparison states that USDC and USDT cost the same to send on any given chain because gas fees are set by the network, not the token. Differences you see in practice usually come from the chain, congestion, native-coin price, wallet settings, account setup or an exchange’s withdrawal policy.

On-chain fee versus an exchange withdrawal charge
A self-custody wallet normally shows the network fee for the transaction it is preparing. An exchange may charge a separate withdrawal amount, use a fee schedule that changes by network, or batch withdrawals. The amount deducted from an exchange balance therefore may not equal the fee paid by a wallet directly. Check the withdrawal preview and the recipient’s credited amount rather than assuming the public blockchain estimate is the exchange’s final charge.
How network fees are calculated
Ethereum: gas units multiplied by market prices
Ethereum documentation updated June 24, 2026 defines gas as the computational resource required for a transaction. Its total fee has two price components: a base fee and a priority fee, also called a tip. In practical form, the charge is gas used × (base fee + priority fee), and it is paid in ETH.
A simple native ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas units. A stablecoin transfer calls a token smart contract, so it normally requires more computation than that simple transfer. The gas limit shown by a wallet is a unit allowance for execution; the final charge depends on the gas actually used and the fee market when the transaction is accepted. Busy periods can raise the base fee, while a higher priority fee can help a transaction be included sooner.

Solana’s 2026 documentation lists a 5,000-lamport base transaction fee, illustrated there as about $0.0007, plus an optional variable priority fee. A transfer can also require creation of a token account for the recipient. Solana gives an example of approximately 0.0029 SOL, about $0.40 in that example, for this account-creation rent.

Solana states that the total cost is under $0.001 for most payments. If a new token account must be created, it says to expect about $0.40 total in the cited example. Local fee markets are designed to keep payment fees low and comparatively predictable when unrelated parts of the network are busy. The dollar value still moves with SOL’s market price.
Other networks use their own native fee asset
The stablecoin itself normally is not the coin used to pay gas. A wallet needs the network’s native asset, even when the balance being sent is entirely USDC or USDT. The native assets named in the 2026 comparison are:
- Base: ETH
- Arbitrum: ETH
- Solana: SOL
- Polygon: MATIC or POL, depending on the wallet and network interface
- TRON: TRX
- Stellar: XLM
A wallet with plenty of USDC but zero ETH cannot pay an ETH-based network fee. Add a small amount of the correct native asset before attempting the transfer; sending the stablecoin to yourself does not substitute for gas.

| Network | Typical fee | Typical confirmation time | Fee token | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base | Under $0.01 | About 2 seconds | ETH | Estimate varies with Ethereum and Base conditions. |
| Solana | Under $0.01 | Under 1 second | SOL | A new token account can add roughly $0.40 in Solana’s cited example. |
| Ethereum | $1–$10+ | 1–5 minutes | ETH | Gas prices and priority settings can move the range sharply. |
| Arbitrum | $0.01–$0.10 | About 2 seconds | ETH | Typical range, not a fixed quote. |
| Polygon | $0.01–$0.05 | About 2 seconds | MATIC/POL | Wallets may label the current native asset differently. |
| TRON | Below $0.50 | About 3 seconds | TRX | Actual cost depends on available resources and service fees. |
| Stellar | Below $0.001 | 3–5 seconds | XLM | Use only when the recipient supports the Stellar asset and format. |
The table’s figures are useful for choosing a route, but the send or withdrawal screen is the authoritative estimate at the moment you transact. A network can be inexpensive in dollars yet unsuitable because the recipient cannot deposit that chain or convert the asset locally.
USDC or USDT: which is cheaper?
There is no universal winner. On the same chain, the network sets the gas charge, so USDC and USDT generally cost the same to transmit. The practical choice is the combination that the recipient accepts and can use after arrival.
When USDC is the practical choice
USDC.org describes Base as a low-cost USDC route. Base typically appears below one cent in the 2026 table and uses ETH for fees. It can be attractive when a recipient’s exchange or wallet explicitly supports USDC on Base and the sender already has ETH available.
When USDT is the practical choice
USDC.org describes TRON as a dominant low-cost USDT route. TRON’s typical fee is below $0.50 and it uses TRX. That route is useful only if the recipient’s deposit instructions specify USDT on TRON; an Ethereum or Solana USDT deposit address is a different destination.

When Solana is available for either token
Solana is listed as a low-cost route for both USDC and USDT where supported. Its normal payment cost is under $0.001, but a first-time recipient may need a token account, adding about $0.40 in the documentation’s example. Confirm that the receiving service supports the Solana version, not merely the ticker.
A step-by-step method for choosing a route
- Ask for the exact deposit network and token. Have the recipient copy the network name and token standard from the wallet or exchange deposit page. Do not infer the network from the address format or from the ticker alone.
- Check current cost and speed. Compare the wallet’s live estimate with the indicative ranges above. Record whether the estimate is an on-chain fee, a service withdrawal charge or both.
- Fund the native gas token. Hold ETH for Base, Arbitrum or Ethereum; SOL for Solana; TRX for TRON; MATIC or POL for Polygon; and XLM for Stellar. Leave enough for the fee in addition to the stablecoin amount.
- Look for setup transactions. A wallet may need to create a recipient token account, approve a token contract or perform another preliminary transaction. Solana’s new-account example is the clearest documented case, but any extra transaction can add a separate charge.
- Verify conversion and cash-out. Ask whether the recipient can trade, withdraw or spend that exact token on that exact network. USDC.org notes that cash-out infrastructure is often more important than a small difference in network fee.
- Send a small test when anything is unfamiliar. Confirm the destination received the test on the intended chain before sending the full balance. Recheck the network selector, address and memo or destination tag requirements immediately before final approval.
- Save the transaction identifier. Use the wallet or exchange’s transaction hash to check whether the transfer is pending, confirmed or rejected. A confirmed transaction on the wrong network does not become correct merely because the ticker matches.
Why a transfer can cost more than expected
Congestion and priority settings
Ethereum’s base fee changes with demand, and a wallet may add a priority fee to compete for earlier inclusion. A quote taken during a busy period can therefore exceed a quiet-period estimate. Solana also permits an optional priority fee, although its documented base payment remains small.
Native-token price movement
Fee rules are denominated in ETH, SOL, TRX, POL/MATIC or XLM. Even when the number of native units is unchanged, a higher market price makes the dollar equivalent larger. Dollar ranges in comparison tables should never be treated as fixed prices.

A token transfer may be the first interaction between a recipient and that token on the selected chain. Solana documents approximately 0.0029 SOL, about $0.40 in its example, for creating a new token account. If the wallet includes that amount in the first transfer, it can look like an unexpectedly high fee compared with later payments.

Approval or contract interactions
Some applications require an approval before a contract can move tokens. Approval and transfer are separate transactions, so both can consume gas. A direct wallet-to-wallet payment generally avoids an application approval, but the exact flow depends on the service used.
Exchange withdrawal policies
An exchange can add a fixed withdrawal charge, periodically update its schedule or batch transactions. Compare the balance deducted, the network fee shown and the amount the recipient will receive. These figures can differ even when the underlying blockchain transaction is inexpensive.
Wrong network selection
Choosing a network that the destination does not support can delay crediting or require specialized recovery. Stop and contact the recipient’s support team before sending if the network name, token standard or memo requirement is unclear. Never assume a platform will automatically bridge or convert an unsupported deposit.

How to minimize total cost without creating a bigger problem
- Choose a low-cost network only after the recipient confirms support; the cheapest listed fee is not a saving if funds cannot be credited.
- Prefer a route for which you already hold the native gas asset, or budget the cost of acquiring it. Buying a small amount of ETH, SOL or TRX solely to pay one fee can outweigh a modest network difference.
- Check whether a first-time token-account or setup charge applies before comparing routes.
- For Ethereum, review the wallet’s base-fee and priority-fee estimate and decide whether immediate inclusion is worth a higher tip.
- Compare the recipient’s cash-out spread, minimum withdrawal and settlement options, not just the blockchain fee. A slightly dearer network with reliable local liquidity can leave the recipient with more usable value.
- Use a test transfer for a new address, a new platform or a large amount. Treat the test as a verification step, not as a guarantee that every future transfer will cost the same.
A practical decision guide
| If your priority is… | Potential route from the 2026 figures | Conditions you must confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Sub-cent cost and very fast settlement | Solana or Stellar | The recipient supports the exact token on that network; Solana may require a new token account. |
| Low-cost USDC with an Ethereum-compatible environment | Base | The recipient accepts USDC on Base and you hold ETH for gas. |
| USDT with broad route familiarity in the recipient’s service | TRON | The recipient specifically lists USDT on TRON and you hold TRX. |
| Ethereum-native ecosystem compatibility | Ethereum | You accept a typical $1–$10+ range that can rise with congestion and have enough ETH. |
| Layer-2 transfer with a moderate stated range | Arbitrum or Polygon | Confirm the recipient’s supported network and whether the wallet requires ETH or MATIC/POL. |
These are route-selection examples, not guarantees or endorsements. The recipient’s supported deposit network and cash-out path take precedence over every fee ranking.
Final checks before approving the transaction
- Token name and contract or network version match the recipient’s instructions.
- Network selector matches exactly on both sides.
- Destination address is copied correctly, with any required memo or tag.
- Native gas balance covers the quoted fee and any possible setup transaction.
- Displayed amount received accounts for an exchange’s withdrawal charge.
- Test transfer has arrived when the address or network is unfamiliar.
- Transaction details show the intended chain before you approve.
Network demand and fee rules determine the charge; the stablecoin ticker does not. Ethereum uses gas priced through a base fee and priority fee in ETH, while Solana’s normal payment is usually under one-thousandth of a dollar but can add roughly $0.40 for a new token account in its cited example. Compare the live estimate, confirmation time, native-token requirement and recipient cash-out support together, then send only after the chain and token match.
