A stablecoin card purchase may avoid the issuer’s transaction fee while still reflecting a crypto trading spread, an ATM operator charge, network or agreement fees, and account-specific limits. In the United States, spending stablecoins is generally a digital-asset disposition that must be tracked for tax purposes, even when the merchant receives dollars.
This guide explains how card charges work, why exact limits vary, what Form 1099-DA does and does not show, and how to keep the lot-level records needed for an accurate return.

What a stablecoin card actually does
A crypto card can draw from a stablecoin balance, another supported cryptocurrency, or a cash balance. At checkout, the card network authorizes a dollar amount while the provider converts the selected digital asset into the currency required for settlement. Coinbase’s card guidance, for example, says its card automatically converts crypto to U.S. dollars for purchases and ATM withdrawals.
That conversion is important for taxes. The merchant may see only dollars, but your asset was sold or exchanged to fund the transaction. The tax result depends on the asset used, its cost basis, its value at the time of conversion, and any relevant fees.

Where the cost of a “free” card purchase can appear
Coinbase states that users can spend local currency, USD Coin (USDC), or supported crypto without a Coinbase transaction fee. That statement addresses the issuer’s transaction charge, not every possible cost of using the card.
| Cost category | What is established | What you should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer transaction fee | Coinbase says card spending itself has no Coinbase transaction fee when using local currency, USDC, or supported crypto. | Whether the statement applies to your card version, location, and transaction type. |
| Crypto trading spread | Coinbase says it includes a spread when it buys, sells, or trades crypto. The spread can make the effective conversion rate different from the market price you see elsewhere. | The quoted rate, the asset being converted, and any spread shown before confirmation. |
| ATM fee | Coinbase may not charge its own ATM fee, but the ATM owner can add a surcharge. | The ATM screen, receipt, and whether your card agreement passes through any network charge. |
| Foreign-exchange, network, or agreement charges | Additional charges may apply under the cardholder and user agreements. | Current agreement language, especially for purchases in another currency or outside the card’s primary region. |
| Rewards or promotional terms | Reward treatment is not stated as a universal feature in the available card guidance. | Current program terms, eligibility, expiration rules, and the tax information supplied for rewards. |
For a meaningful cost comparison, record the asset amount removed, the dollar value credited to the purchase, the spread or conversion rate, and every fee shown on the transaction. A zero line-item transaction fee does not prove that the conversion was free.
Spending and ATM limits are account-specific
There is no single spending or withdrawal limit that applies to every stablecoin cardholder. The official card information confirms that spend limits apply but does not publish one universal numeric table. Limits can depend on your jurisdiction, account verification, card product, risk controls, available balance, and the merchant or ATM.

Before relying on the card for rent, travel, payroll, or an emergency cash plan, make a small test purchase and check both the card’s displayed limit and the merchant’s acceptance. An ATM can reject a withdrawal even when your card account has sufficient funds because the machine has its own cap or does not support the network.
What to do when a transaction is declined
- Check the available balance in the asset or cash account selected for spending.
- Review the card app for a daily, monthly, merchant-category, or jurisdiction restriction.
- Confirm that the merchant or ATM accepts the card network and the transaction currency.
- For an ATM, try a lower amount because the machine may impose a per-transaction ceiling.
- Save the decline notice and contact card support if the displayed limit conflicts with the terms.
When a card purchase is taxable in the United States
The Internal Revenue Service treats digital assets as property for federal income-tax purposes. Selling, spending, or swapping property can create a capital gain or loss measured against your cost basis. Merely holding a stablecoin is not a sale, and transferring it between wallets you control is generally not a disposal.
Merchant purchases and ATM withdrawals
Using stablecoins to buy goods or services is generally a disposal of the units used. An ATM withdrawal funded by crypto is treated similarly because the provider converts the asset to dollars before dispensing cash. The taxable event is the conversion or sale of the asset, not the moment the merchant later uses the dollars.

Coinbase says that when USDC trades at parity with the U.S. dollar, card use should generally not create a gain or loss. You should still record each transaction. If the asset’s value differs from its dollar-denominated basis, even slightly, the conversion can produce a reportable result. A card funded with a volatile token can realize a gain or loss even though every receipt is in dollars.
Swaps before you spend
Exchanging one digital asset for USDC is generally a disposition of the asset surrendered. For example, converting ETH to USDC and then spending the USDC creates two recordable steps: the ETH-to-USDC exchange and the later USDC purchase. Do not treat the intermediate USDC balance as if it erased the first transaction.
How cost basis is established
Basis is the amount assigned to the units you dispose of. It depends on how you acquired them and on the records available for the specific lot. Keep the acquisition date, units, dollar value, fees, wallet or account, and any lot-identification information.

- Purchased stablecoins: retain the trade confirmation and the dollar amount paid. Preserve the provider’s fee and spread information so your records explain the amount assigned to the lot.
- Rewards and promotional stablecoins: Coinbase’s guidance explains that these generally enter income at receipt and establish basis at that value. Save the reward notice and its fair-market value on the receipt date.
- Transfers from an outside wallet: the receiving account may show an incoming amount but not its original basis. Reconstruct the acquisition history from the sending wallet, exchange statements, and bank records; do not assume the transfer date is the purchase date.
- Multiple lots: match the units spent to the lot-selection method you actually use and can substantiate. A wallet balance alone is not a complete basis record.
Worked examples of card-funded dispositions
The following figures are hypothetical illustrations, not tax calculations for a particular return.
| Event | Illustrative records | General tax implication |
|---|---|---|
| USDC purchased and spent at parity | Acquire 300 USDC for $300; spend 120 USDC when the conversion value is $120. | Typically no gain or loss when the units’ value and basis are both $1, but retain the purchase and spending records. |
| Reward later spent | Receive 500 USDC as a reward with a $500 value; later spend it for $500. | The $500 reward is generally income when received and establishes a $500 basis. The later spend generally has no additional gain or loss if value remains $500. |
| Volatile token converted at checkout | Acquire a token for $200; the card converts units worth $260 to fund a purchase. | The conversion can produce a $60 gain before considering any applicable fees and lot details. |
| Loss on a conversion | Acquire units for $200; the card conversion value is $185. | The $15 difference can be a loss, subject to the normal reporting and limitation rules that apply to your return. |
Use the actual units and values from your statements rather than rounding every purchase to a whole dollar. Stablecoin transactions may be close to parity, but a complete ledger is what lets you demonstrate that conclusion.

Coinbase describes optional aggregated reporting for qualifying stablecoin sales exceeding $10,000 during the relevant annual period. Instead of listing every small stablecoin sale separately, a qualifying amount may appear as one aggregate figure. Coinbase says U.S. customers may receive their 2025 Form 1099-DA by March 17, 2026.
An aggregated statement may not resemble your card activity line by line. It also may not cover transfers between wallets you control, activity at non-broker platforms, or transactions for which the broker had insufficient information. Reconcile the form with your own ledger rather than copying its total without review.
The IRS states: “You must report income, gain, or loss from all taxable transactions involving digital assets on your federal income tax return for the taxable year of the transaction, regardless of the amount or whether you receive a payee statement or information return.” A missing 1099-DA therefore does not remove the obligation to report taxable activity.

Set up your records before the first purchase. A spreadsheet is sufficient if it preserves the original statements and can identify each lot.
- Capture acquisition data: enter the date and time, asset, units, dollar value, fees, source account or wallet, and basis for every purchase, reward, swap, or deposit.
- Capture each card event: record the authorization date, settlement date if shown, merchant or ATM, asset units removed, dollar amount, conversion rate, spread or fee, and the lot used.
- Label the event type: distinguish a purchase, sale, swap, reward, promotional credit, ATM withdrawal, and wallet-to-wallet transfer.
- Preserve source files: download monthly card statements, exchange trade history, reward notices, wallet exports, and ATM receipts. Keep them in a dated folder rather than relying on a live dashboard.
- Reconcile periodically: compare opening balance plus acquisitions and transfers with spending, swaps, withdrawals, and closing balance. Investigate any unexplained difference immediately.
- Reconcile Form 1099-DA: when available, compare its proceeds and transaction categories with your ledger. Add missing taxable events and correct basis where the form lacks complete information.
At minimum, your ledger should have columns for date, asset, units, fiat value, fees, acquisition lot, event type, and source statement. Keep transfers between your own wallets in the ledger even though they are generally not sales; they provide the chain of custody needed to establish basis later.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming no transaction fee means no tax event: the absence of an issuer fee does not change the property disposition created by spending or converting crypto.
- Recording only the dollar receipt: the asset units and acquisition lot are needed to calculate basis.
- Ignoring ATM surcharges: separate the issuer’s charge from the ATM owner’s fee and retain the receipt.
- Using a universal limit found in an old article: limits change by account, product, and jurisdiction; rely on current in-app terms.
- Waiting for a 1099-DA: reporting responsibility covers taxable transactions whether or not a statement arrives.
- Treating a wallet transfer as a sale: a transfer between wallets you control is generally not itself a disposal, but missing basis information can create problems when you later spend the units.
- Assuming every USDC spend is automatically tax-free: parity usually means little or no gain or loss, but the relevant value and basis still need to be documented.
When professional tax help is warranted
Consider a tax professional familiar with digital assets if you used several exchanges or self-custody wallets, received substantial rewards, cannot establish basis for transferred assets, had frequent swaps before card spending, or received a 1099-DA that conflicts with your records. Bring the raw exports and your reconciliation, not just an ending account balance.
