SSI and SSDI recipients both have to report changes, but they do not report for the same reasons or under one universal deadline. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is needs-based, so changes to income, resources, living arrangements, household members and several personal-status facts can change eligibility or the monthly payment. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) reporting is centered on disability-related work, income and medical changes. The Social Security Administration (SSA) tells disability beneficiaries to report those changes right away, but the SSI 10-day rule should not be copied onto SSDI.
The safest approach is to identify your benefit, report promptly through the channel SSA specifies, and keep proof of what you reported and when.

SSI and SSDI reporting at a glance
SSI and SSDI are separate programs. A person can receive one, the other, or both, so first check which benefit each notice or payment represents. The reporting rule that applies to SSI does not automatically apply to SSDI.

| Topic | SSI | SSDI and SSA disability reporting |
|---|---|---|
| Why a change matters | SSI is needs-based. Income, resources, living arrangements and other household or status facts can change eligibility or the payment amount. | SSA’s disability guidance emphasizes work status, income and significant medical improvement. |
| Main changes to report | Address, living arrangements, earned and unearned income, resources, household and marital changes, certain citizenship or immigration changes, help with expenses, other benefits, institutional admission or discharge, and disability-related work or medical changes. | Starting, stopping or changing work; self-employment; pay or hours changes; workers’ compensation or public disability benefits; and significant medical improvement. |
| General timing | Report as soon as possible and no later than 10 days after the end of the month in which the change occurred. | Report changes right away under the applicable SSA disability instructions. The disability page does not impose SSI’s general 10-day deadline. |
| Wage reporting | Report wages monthly. SSA’s wage instructions say to report by the sixth day of the month after the wages were paid; the general SSI rule uses the 10th day after the month of change as the latest deadline. | Report applicable work and income changes using the current disability-reporting instructions. Do not assume SSI’s monthly wage process is identical. |
| Why prompt reporting matters | Late or inaccurate information can lead to an underpayment, an overpayment that must be repaid, a payment reduction or a sanction in circumstances SSA identifies. | Prompt reporting helps SSA keep disability payments accurate and evaluate work and medical changes under the rules for the benefit. |
If you receive both benefits, follow the reporting requirements for each program. One report may not satisfy every obligation, especially when wages or household changes affect SSI while work activity also affects SSDI.

What do I need to report to Social Security if I get SSI?
SSI reporting is broad because the payment is based on financial need and household circumstances. SSA’s 2026 SSI reporting guidance lists the following categories. A change may matter even when you are unsure whether it will alter your payment, so report it and let SSA determine its effect.
Address and living arrangements
- A move to a new address or a change in where you receive mail.
- Moving into or out of another person’s home, changing who pays household expenses, or changing who provides food or shelter.
- Admission to or discharge from an institution, such as a hospital or facility, when the event affects your living arrangement.
- Other specified changes in where you live or who supports you. Tell SSA about the change rather than assuming a temporary arrangement is irrelevant.
Living-arrangement information can affect the SSI calculation even when no one hands you cash. For example, a change in who pays rent or utilities, or who supplies food, may change the facts SSA uses for the payment.
Earned and unearned income
Report wages, self-employment income and changes in pay or hours. Also report income from other sources, including benefits or payments that are not wages. SSA specifically says, “You must report your monthly wages and changes in income from other sources to get accurate monthly SSI payments,” on its Report monthly wages and other income page.
Income can change because a job starts or ends, the number of hours changes, a pay rate changes, a bonus is received, or another benefit begins or stops. Keep the pay date and gross wage information available when you report; the monthly wage process is separate from reporting other changes in your circumstances.
Resources
Report changes in resources, such as money or property that may be considered when SSA evaluates SSI eligibility. The obligation is to report a change; it is not your job to decide that every item counts or to calculate an exclusion without checking the applicable SSI rules.
An SSA advocate notice dated October 7, 2026, states SSI resource limits of $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. Those figures are time-sensitive, and resource-counting exceptions can apply, so verify the current limit and treatment of a particular asset with SSA before relying on a calculation.

Household, marital and family changes
- Marriage, separation or divorce, and whether a spouse is living with you.
- A spouse’s income or resources when you are married and living together.
- A child’s household changes and, where applicable, a parent’s income or resources used in the child’s SSI case.
- A death in the household or another change in who lives with you.
- A change in a sponsor in certain noncitizen cases.
These rules are fact-specific. Report the relationship or household change and provide the details SSA requests rather than trying to predict whether the change will increase or decrease SSI.

- A change in citizenship or immigration status.
- Beginning, ending or changing another benefit or payment.
- Help with living expenses from another person.
- Institutional admission or discharge.
- Other circumstances SSA identifies in its SSI reporting instructions, including specified travel or residence events.
Report a change even if it appears unrelated to your disability. SSI eligibility can depend on several facts at once.
Additional reports for SSI recipients with disabilities
SSA’s disability-related SSI guidance adds several events that should be reported:
- A significant improvement in your medical condition.
- Starting or stopping work, changing jobs, or changing hours or pay.
- Entering or leaving Ticket to Work status.
- Changes in work expenses or expenses under a Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS).
These disability-related items overlap with SSDI reporting, but an SSI recipient must still meet SSI’s broader financial and household reporting duties.
What must I report while on Disability?
SSA’s page titled What you must report while on Disability gives a narrower, disability-focused list. Its instruction is direct: “Let us know right away if your work status or income changes, or if there’s a big improvement in your medical condition.”
Work starting, stopping or changing
Report when you start or stop a job, change employers, change from employee work to self-employment, or otherwise change your work status. A change in hours, duties or pay is also relevant. Do not wait until you know whether the work will continue; report the event and update SSA if the situation changes again.

Self-employment
Self-employment can involve irregular payments, variable hours and business expenses. Tell SSA that you are self-employed and report the changes requested under the disability instructions. Keep contemporaneous records of the work, dates, receipts and payments so you can explain the activity accurately.
Workers’ compensation and public disability benefits
Report workers’ compensation and public disability benefits, including a new award, a change in amount or a termination. These payments are distinct from wages, so include the type of payment and the date it began or changed.
Significant medical improvement
Tell SSA about a substantial improvement in your medical condition. Reporting an improvement does not itself decide whether disability benefits end; SSA evaluates the change under the applicable disability rules. The important point is to provide the information promptly instead of waiting for a scheduled review.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy SSDI timing must be handled separately
The disability reporting material says to report right away, but it does not state the SSI rule of reporting by the 10th day after the month of change. SSDI work incentives and benefit effects can depend on the facts of the case, so use the current SSA instructions for your disability benefit and the particular change. If you also receive SSI, meet the SSI deadlines separately.
When do I need to report SSI changes?
SSA’s general SSI instruction is: “Report any changes that may affect your SSI as soon as possible and no later than 10 days after the end of the month in which the change occurred.” This is a general deadline for changes that may affect SSI; it is not an SSDI deadline.
| Event | SSI timing to use | Practical example |
|---|---|---|
| Most changes in income, resources, household or status | As soon as possible, and no later than 10 days after the end of the month in which the change occurred. | If a change occurs in April, report it as soon as you can and no later than May 10. |
| Monthly wages | SSA’s wage-reporting instructions say by the sixth day of the month after the wages were paid. | Wages paid in April should be reported by May 6 under that monthly instruction. |
| Other income changes | SSA’s monthly-income guidance generally uses the 10th day of the month after the change. | An income change in April is generally due by May 10 under that guidance. |
| SSDI or other disability benefit changes | Follow the applicable disability instructions and report right away; do not substitute the SSI dates. | When work or pay changes, report promptly through the channel SSA identifies for your disability claim. |
The sixth-day wage instruction is earlier than the general 10-day SSI rule. Use the earlier date for monthly wages when possible, and check the current SSA page if your notice gives a different instruction. SSA says the earlier wage report helps reduce the risk of an SSI overpayment. An SSA advocate notice dated October 7, 2026, also says, “Clients who work and receive SSI must report their wages by the 10th day of each month.” Because official materials describe both a monthly sixth-day process and a 10th-day general deadline, report by the sixth day when you can and resolve any case-specific instruction with SSA.

How do I report my SSI wages?
SSA provides several government reporting channels. The exact screens or prompts can change, so use the current instructions associated with your SSI record.
- Collect the information. Have your name and identifying details, the employer or payer, the pay date, and the wage amount shown on your pay record. Keep copies of pay stubs or other evidence.
- Choose an official channel. SSA identifies a free mobile wage-reporting app, automated telephone wage reporting, and reporting through an online SSA account. Use the method available to you and follow its confirmation steps.
- Submit each month. Report monthly wages by the sixth day of the month after payment under SSA’s wage page. Do not treat one report as permission to skip later months.
- Save confirmation. Record the date, method, confirmation number or screen, and the wage information submitted. Keep the supporting pay records with that record.
- Correct errors quickly. If you entered the wrong amount, missed a pay date or received a corrected pay stub, report the correction promptly and explain what changed.
SSA also offers email or text reminders for wage reporting. Reminders can help you remember, but responsibility for an accurate, timely report remains with you. No particular commercial product is required; the identified channels are SSA’s app, telephone system and official online account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should SSDI recipients report work or income changes?
- Identify the change. Note whether you started or stopped work, changed jobs, changed hours or pay, became self-employed, received workers’ compensation or a public disability benefit, or experienced significant medical improvement.
- Report right away. Use the current SSA disability-reporting instructions for your benefit. The reviewed disability guidance does not give SSI’s 10-day general deadline.
- Describe dates and amounts accurately. Include the first or last day worked, employer or self-employment details, hours, pay changes and benefit-payment dates when applicable.
- Keep proof. Save your submission confirmation and documents such as pay records, benefit notices and work logs.
- Update SSA when facts change again. A job that ends, a new pay rate or a change from employee work to self-employment is a new reportable event.
If you receive SSDI and SSI, make sure the same work change is handled under both programs. SSDI reporting addresses disability-related work and medical issues; SSI also requires the financial, resource, living-arrangement and household information described above.
What happens if I don’t report a change to Social Security?
Late, incomplete or inaccurate reporting can make payments wrong. For SSI, SSA warns that possible consequences include an underpayment, an overpayment that must be repaid, a reduction in payments, or a sanction in specified circumstances.
SSA’s 2026 SSI reporting-responsibilities guidance describes a possible $25 to $100 reduction for each failure or late report. It also describes sanction periods of six months, then 12 months, then 24 months for knowingly making false or misleading statements or knowingly failing to report important changes. These are possible consequences described by SSA, not an automatic penalty for every missed report. The outcome depends on the facts, the type of failure and SSA’s determination.

An overpayment can arise even when the mistake was accidental. If SSA later determines that you received more SSI than allowed, it may seek repayment or adjust future payments. Promptly correcting a mistake and keeping proof of your report gives you a clearer record when you ask SSA to review the matter.

For SSDI, do not assume the SSI reduction or sanction amounts apply. The disability pages emphasize immediate reporting to keep work, income and medical information current; any consequence depends on the disability program rules and the facts of the case.
Evidence and recordkeeping that make reporting safer
SSA does not require a particular consumer filing product in the materials described here. A simple, consistent record is enough to show what happened and what you told SSA.
- Keep pay stubs, employer notices, benefit award or termination letters, workers’ compensation statements and self-employment records.
- Write down the date a change occurred, the date you reported it and the channel used.
- Save confirmation numbers, screenshots or automated telephone confirmation details.
- Keep copies of letters or forms sent to SSA and notes from calls, including the representative’s name or identifier when provided.
- For household changes, record the move date, who lives with you and who pays food, rent or utilities.
- For medical improvement, retain the relevant medical or treatment information and the date you notified SSA.
Organize records by month for SSI wage reports. For SSDI work activity, organize them by job or self-employment period so hours, pay and status changes are easy to explain.

If you receive SSI only
Ask whether the event changed money coming in, assets, where or with whom you live, who helps with expenses, your marital or household status, your citizenship or immigration status, another benefit, or an institutional stay. If yes, report it promptly under the SSI timetable. If you work, report wages every month as well as any broader change in income or work.
If you receive SSDI only
Ask whether work status, employer, self-employment, hours, pay, workers’ compensation, public disability benefits or medical condition changed. Report the event right away using SSA’s disability instructions. Do not wait for an SSI-style monthly deadline unless SSA specifically gives you one for your case.
If you receive both SSI and SSDI
Apply both checklists. A paycheck may require monthly SSI wage reporting and an immediate disability work report. A move or household change may affect SSI even though it does not fit the SSDI work-focused list.
If you are a representative payee or helper
Maintain the beneficiary’s reporting calendar and records, but confirm the facts with the beneficiary and SSA. A payee’s role does not eliminate the need to report changes affecting the beneficiary’s eligibility or payment.

Common reporting mistakes to avoid
- Using the SSI deadline for SSDI. SSDI reporting guidance says to report right away; it does not establish the SSI 10-day rule as a universal disability deadline.
- Reporting wages once and stopping. SSI wages are a monthly responsibility, even when the job and pay rate stay the same.
- Reporting only cash income. SSI instructions also cover resources, living arrangements, help with expenses, other benefits and status changes.
- Waiting for certainty. Report the change and let SSA determine its effect instead of waiting to see whether eligibility or payment actually changes.
- Losing the proof. Without a confirmation or dated record, it is harder to show when and how you reported.
- Assuming a possible sanction is automatic. SSA describes reductions and sanctions for specified circumstances; a missed report must be evaluated on its facts.
Key takeaways
- SSI reporting is broad because financial need and household circumstances determine eligibility and payment.
- For SSI, report changes as soon as possible and no later than 10 days after the month of change; report wages monthly, using the sixth-day wage instruction when applicable.
- SSDI reporting centers on work, income and significant medical improvement. Report right away under the current SSA disability instructions rather than importing SSI’s deadline.
- Use SSA’s official app, automated telephone service or online account for SSI wage reports, and retain confirmation and supporting records.
- Prompt, accurate reporting helps prevent underpayments, overpayments, repayment demands and other consequences.
