Short answer: A sports betting ETF is a focused industry position, while a diversified index fund is intended to spread exposure across many companies and sectors. The distinction is especially important for BETZ: as of June 22, 2026, it is an actively managed ETF, not a passive fund tracking its former sports-betting index. BETZ targets sports betting and iGaming companies and normally commits at least 80% of net assets plus investment borrowings to securities or instruments providing that exposure. A diversified index fund may reduce single-industry risk, but it still carries market risk, can have sizable positions in a few companies, and may overlap with investments you already own.
What the comparison really means
“ETF” describes how shares are bought and sold, not how diversified the portfolio is. Exchange-traded funds can hold hundreds of securities, a small group of companies, or even a single stock. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) advises investors to inspect an ETF’s actual holdings rather than infer diversification from the wrapper.

“Index fund” describes a strategy designed to approximate the performance of a specified index before fees. A broad-market index fund generally owns companies from many industries, whereas a thematic fund concentrates on a defined subject. An actively managed ETF does not seek to replicate an index; its results depend partly on the manager’s security selection, portfolio construction and trading decisions.
Therefore, the useful question is not whether an ETF or an index fund is automatically better. It is whether a narrow, actively managed sports-betting allocation has a role in your overall portfolio that you can tolerate through industry downturns and regulatory changes.

What changed about BETZ in June 2026
The Roundhill ETF Trust filing supplement filed June 12, 2026, states that BETZ’s strategy change became effective June 22, 2026. Before that date, the fund was a passive ETF tracking the Morningstar Sports Betting & iGaming Select Index. Since the effective date, BETZ has been actively managed. Articles or database descriptions that still call it an index-tracking fund are outdated for the current strategy.
Current objective and eligible investments
BETZ seeks total return. It invests primarily in equity securities of sports betting and iGaming companies and may use derivatives to obtain that exposure. The adviser’s current criteria include companies whose revenues or profits are mainly attributable to online bookmaking, related media, technology or services, or marketing.
Under normal circumstances, at least 80% of net assets plus investment borrowings are allocated to equity securities or instruments that provide sports betting and iGaming company exposure. That is a targeted investment policy, not a promise of broad diversification.

The filing identifies BETZ as a “non-diversified” investment company under the Investment Company Act. It also says, “The Fund expects to have significant exposure to the Casinos & Gaming Industry.” The filing warns that this can make BETZ more vulnerable to adverse developments in that industry than a more diversified fund.

The former index’s 28 components reported as of March 31, 2026, belong to the pre-transition historical record. That number does not describe BETZ’s current actively managed portfolio, and it should not be used as a current holdings or diversification measure.
How a diversified index fund differs
A diversified index fund starts with a stated benchmark, such as a broad domestic or global equity index, then uses a rules-based process to approximate that benchmark before fees. The benchmark’s rules determine which securities qualify, how often it rebalances and how companies are weighted.
Diversification is relative, not absolute
A fund can own many securities yet remain concentrated in its largest positions, one country, one market-cap segment or one sector. A broad index fund may therefore be more diversified than BETZ while still having meaningful exposure to a handful of large companies. Read the benchmark methodology, current holdings and weightings rather than relying on labels such as “broad” or “total market.”

An index fund accepts the benchmark’s gains and losses. It remains exposed to market declines, valuation changes, economic shocks and the risks of the countries and industries represented in the index. Its rules also do not eliminate overlap with other funds or individual stocks in your account.

How diversified is a sports betting ETF?
There is no reliable answer from the ETF label alone. For BETZ, the 80% policy, non-diversified classification and expected Casinos & Gaming exposure indicate a concentrated theme. The exact number of holdings, largest positions and sector weights can change under active management, so use the latest holdings file and shareholder report when making a decision.
Concentration can occur at several levels
- Industry concentration: Sports betting, casinos and related businesses can respond to the same laws, licensing decisions, consumer-spending trends and technological shifts.
- Company concentration: A few large positions can dominate returns even when the fund holds more securities than an investor expects.
- Geographic concentration: Operators may depend on particular jurisdictions, currencies or regulatory regimes.
- Business-model concentration: Online wagering, media, marketing and platform providers can be affected by the same customer-acquisition costs and competitive pressures.
What to inspect in current holdings
- Download the latest holdings and record each position’s percentage of net assets.
- Add the positions by industry and geography to see whether the portfolio is effectively one economic bet.
- Compare the largest holdings with stocks and funds already in your account.
- Check whether derivatives or cash-like instruments materially alter the stated equity exposure.
- Repeat the review after a material strategy change, rebalance or new shareholder report.
Risks specific to sports betting and iGaming exposure
The BETZ filing describes an industry that is competitive and affected by consumer spending, economic conditions, consumer tastes, technology, regulation and licensing across jurisdictions. These risks can arrive together: a weak economy can reduce discretionary wagering while regulators increase compliance requirements or restrict advertising.
Regulatory and licensing risk
Sports betting rules differ by jurisdiction and can change through legislation, administrative action or licensing decisions. A company can lose access to a market, face higher compliance costs or be unable to expand as expected. Because a thematic fund owns businesses tied to the same regulatory environment, one policy shift can affect several holdings at once.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Consumer-spending and economic risk
Wagering and entertainment spending depend partly on disposable income and consumer confidence. During an economic slowdown, customers may reduce discretionary activity, and companies may compete more aggressively for fewer dollars. A broad index fund can also fall in a recession, but its results are not tied to one discretionary industry.

Competition and technology risk
Operators compete for customers, pricing, distribution and reliable technology. New platforms, payment methods, data practices or security failures can change competitive positions quickly. Businesses that provide media, marketing or technology services may experience the same cycle from a different part of the value chain.
Derivatives and implementation risk
Because BETZ may use derivatives to obtain exposure, its results can be affected by contract terms, counterparties, collateral and the relationship between the derivative and the underlying market. The prospectus explains the applicable limits and risks; do not assume that a derivative position behaves identically to owning the underlying shares.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Risks that remain in diversified index funds
Broad exposure reduces dependence on one industry, but it does not remove investment risk. A market-wide decline can lower the value of nearly every equity holding. Cap-weighted benchmarks can become dominated by the largest companies, and a country- or sector-specific index may be much narrower than its name suggests.
Index funds also follow their benchmark through market cycles. If the benchmark holds an overvalued sector or a company facing serious problems, the fund generally continues to own it until the index rules remove or reduce it. A diversified fund can therefore be a steadier core holding without being a guaranteed safe investment.

Costs, trading price and tracking
Compare current costs, not remembered figures
Expense ratios and other fund expenses are deducted from net asset value. The SEC notes that even small cost differences can compound into meaningful differences in long-term results. The available documents do not establish a current, matched fee comparison between BETZ and a particular diversified index fund, so obtain each fund’s current prospectus before drawing a cost conclusion.
Also consider brokerage commissions, account charges and the bid-ask spread. A fund with a low expense ratio can still be expensive to trade if its spread is wide or its market is thin.
Market price may differ from NAV
ETF shares trade throughout the day at a market price that can be above or below the fund’s net asset value (NAV). Check the quoted spread, recent trading activity and whether the premium or discount is unusually large before placing an order. NAV is an accounting value, not necessarily the price you will pay or receive at that moment.

An index fund is judged partly by how closely it tracks its benchmark after fees. BETZ’s active strategy has no current index-tracking objective. Its results depend on the manager’s choices, and comparing its return with a broad index without accounting for the very different exposures can produce a misleading conclusion.
A practical decision framework
Choose a broad index as a possible core when
- You want one holding to spread equity exposure across many industries or countries.
- You prefer a rules-based approach and do not want to make a sector call.
- You can accept market-wide losses in exchange for broad participation in growth.
- You have checked the benchmark, largest holdings, fees and overlap with your other investments.
Consider a sports betting ETF only as a deliberate satellite when
- You understand that the position is tied to a narrow, competitive and regulated industry.
- You can tolerate larger swings and the possibility that industry news affects many holdings simultaneously.
- You have reviewed the current active strategy, holdings, derivatives policy and 80% investment policy.
- The position size fits your time horizon, financial situation and ability to withstand a prolonged drawdown.
Questions to answer before buying either fund
- What is the fund’s exact current objective and benchmark, if any?
- What are the ten largest holdings, and what percentage of assets do they represent?
- How much exposure overlaps with funds or stocks already owned?
- Which industries, countries and currencies drive the portfolio?
- What is the current expense ratio, and what trading spread and liquidity should you expect?
- How would a regulatory change, recession or technology disruption affect the holdings?
- What role will this fund play: core diversification, a satellite allocation or a short-term trade?
How to compare funds step by step
- Start with the current prospectus. Confirm the effective date, objective, eligible investments, concentration language and derivative permissions. For BETZ, use documents dated after June 22, 2026 for the active strategy.
- Identify the benchmark or lack of one. Record the diversified fund’s index methodology and remember that BETZ is not currently tracking its former Morningstar index.
- Download holdings. Review position weights, sectors, countries and overlap with your existing portfolio rather than counting holdings alone.
- Measure the role of each risk. Note exposure to regulation, consumer spending, competition, technology, currency and broad market movements.
- Compare costs and trading conditions. Use current expense ratios, shareholder reports, bid-ask spreads and any account charges. Do not substitute an old fee or a promotional figure.
- Stress-test the allocation. Ask whether you could keep the position through a multiyear industry slump, a sharp market decline or an adverse licensing decision.
- Recheck periodically. Active holdings, index weights, fees and your own financial circumstances change. Review new prospectuses and shareholder reports rather than relying on an old description.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling BETZ a passive index ETF today: That description applied before the June 22, 2026 conversion.
- Equating an ETF with diversification: The wrapper does not reveal the number or concentration of holdings.
- Using the former index’s 28 components as a current fact: That figure was reported for March 31, 2026, before the strategy change.
- Assuming a broad label guarantees low fees: Verify the current expense ratio and total trading costs.
- Comparing returns without matching exposure: A narrow thematic fund and a broad index answer different portfolio questions.
- Ignoring overlap: A new fund may duplicate companies you already own, reducing the diversification you expected.
- Treating NAV as the trading price: ETF shares can trade at a premium or discount to NAV.
- Assuming past performance predicts the winner: No matched performance, volatility or risk-adjusted comparison is established here, and historical results do not settle the portfolio-fit question.
Bottom line for investors
BETZ is currently an actively managed, non-diversified sports betting and iGaming ETF with a policy to place at least 80% of net assets plus investment borrowings in related exposure. Its filing expects significant Casinos & Gaming exposure, so regulation, licensing, consumer spending, competition and technology can affect much of the portfolio at once.
A diversified index fund can serve a different purpose by spreading exposure across industries, but its actual diversification, costs and concentration must be verified from current documents. The sensible comparison is a portfolio-fit decision: broad index exposure for a potential core allocation, or a carefully sized thematic position for an investor who knowingly accepts concentrated industry risk. Neither structure is universally superior, and neither label replaces reading the current prospectus and holdings.
