Compare five things before choosing between a sports-betting exchange-traded fund (ETF) and an individual betting stock: what you actually own, how concentrated the exposure is, whether the fund is active or index-based, all-in trading and ownership costs, and the operating and regulatory risks of the underlying businesses.
An ETF can reduce reliance on one operator, but a thematic fund is not the same as a diversified market portfolio. A single stock gives more direct exposure to one company’s markets, brands, execution and balance sheet. The better choice depends on how much company-specific risk you can research and monitor, not on the label “ETF” alone.

ETF versus stock: the decision in one view
A betting stock represents an ownership interest in one issuer. Your result is therefore tied closely to that company’s customer acquisition, market access, pricing, technology, financing and management decisions. An ETF holds a portfolio of securities, so one holding normally has less influence on the fund than one stock has on your account.
That diversification is relative, not absolute. A sports-betting ETF can hold operators, suppliers and gaming companies that face the same competition, regulation, cybersecurity threats and changes in consumer behavior. If the theme falls out of favor, several holdings can decline together. Treat the ETF as a focused sector or thematic allocation rather than a substitute for a broad-market fund.

What diversification can and cannot do
Spreading a position across issuers mainly reduces the damage caused by one company’s poor execution, outage, investigation or financing problem. It does not eliminate a sector-wide decline. For example, several holdings may rely on the same licensing environment, payment rails, cloud providers, data suppliers or promotional market. A broader ticker count can therefore mask economic concentration.
Compare the ETF with your complete portfolio, not in isolation. If another fund already owns the same operators, your effective exposure may be much larger than the ETF’s name suggests. Conversely, an individual stock may be a small position in a diversified account, while a sector ETF may become a large thematic bet if you own several related funds.
1. Identify exactly what the ETF owns
BETZ is a portfolio of company securities
Roundhill’s reported portfolio for June 30, 2026 consisted of common stocks, including DraftKings. Its product disclosure listed Flutter Entertainment, Allwyn, DraftKings, Evolution and Rush Street Interactive among the five largest holdings on that date. Those names and their weights can change, so a dated holdings file—not a search result or an old article—is the appropriate basis for a current comparison.
Read the holdings for business exposure, not just company names. An operator may derive revenue from online wagering, casino games, lotteries or other entertainment. A supplier may sell technology or content to many operators and therefore respond differently to a change in consumer demand. Geographic exposure also matters: licensing regimes, tax rules and competitive intensity vary by market.
Measure concentration instead of assuming diversification
Record each ETF’s largest positions, the percentage in its top five and top 10, and the number of holdings. Then check whether several holdings depend on the same customers, regulators or technology vendors. A fund with many tickers can still be economically concentrated if most revenue comes from one business model or region.
Also distinguish direct operators from adjacent businesses. A company that supplies games, payments or platform services may benefit from industry growth without having the same promotional or licensing exposure as a sportsbook. A lottery or casino company may be included in a gaming mandate even though its earnings are not driven primarily by sports wagering.
| Exposure question | ETF analysis | Individual-stock analysis |
|---|---|---|
| What drives returns? | Combined results of all holdings, adjusted for their weights and rebalancing. | One issuer’s revenue, margins, financing and valuation. |
| How concentrated is the position? | Check top holdings, sector mix, countries and overlap with your other funds. | Assume high company-specific concentration unless you build your own basket. |
| What can change? | Holdings, weights and portfolio strategy can change under the fund’s governing documents. | Business strategy, management, capital structure and market access can change at the issuer. |
2. Check whether the fund is active or index-based
BETZ changed to active management in June 2026
Roundhill states that BETZ changed its investment objective, principal strategies and principal risks from passive index tracking to active management effective at the open of trading on June 22, 2026. Therefore, descriptions calling BETZ a passive index-tracking fund are stale unless they clearly refer to the period before that date.

That may allow the fund to respond to company developments, but it also introduces manager judgment, turnover and the possibility that results diverge from a straightforward index. Read the current prospectus for the selection process, diversification limits, turnover expectations and principal risks.
Ask four practical questions: What securities are eligible? How much discretion does the manager have over weights? Are there limits on one issuer, country or industry? What circumstances could cause the strategy or risk profile to change? The Roundhill BETZ summary prospectus dated April 30, 2026 is the relevant document for its stated objectives and risks, but later sponsor updates and the newest prospectus control for current terms.
What an index approach would imply
An index-based fund follows stated inclusion and weighting rules and seeks to replicate an index before fees and expenses. The rules, reconstitution schedule and index methodology determine what enters or leaves the portfolio. Historical descriptions cannot establish a fund’s present strategy after a formal change, so use the latest prospectus and sponsor disclosure.

Index tracking is not the same as a pure-play sports-betting mandate. The benchmark may include casinos, lotteries, equipment makers, technology companies or international gaming businesses. Read the index methodology to see whether the exposure matches your intended thesis.

BETZ’s shareholder report reported annualized costs of 0.75% for the six-month period ending June 30, 2026, based on a hypothetical $10,000 investment. This is a historical, fund-specific figure—not a promise of future expenses and not a complete estimate of what every investor will pay.
“Annualized” expresses the six-month experience at a yearly rate; it is not a guarantee that the same amount will be charged in a future period. Confirm the current prospectus expense ratio, any fee waiver, its expiration date and whether the reported figure includes all ordinary fund expenses.
| Cost item | ETF questions | Stock questions |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing fund expense | Check the current prospectus expense ratio, waivers and whether they expire. | No ETF expense ratio; the company’s operating expenses are reflected indirectly in its results and valuation. |
| Trading friction | Compare bid/ask spread, market impact and any premium or discount to net asset value. | Compare spread, liquidity, order size and brokerage charges. |
| Portfolio activity | Turnover can create transaction costs and taxable distributions in a taxable account. | You decide when to trade; corporate actions and issuer events can still create tax consequences. |
The bid/ask spread is the gap between the price available to buy and the price available to sell. A premium or discount compares the ETF’s market price with the value of its underlying holdings. These differences can widen when markets are stressed or when the underlying securities are less liquid, so the price you receive may differ from an intraday estimate of net asset value.
Use like-for-like figures. A fund’s annual expense ratio is not directly comparable with a brokerage commission on one stock purchase. Estimate the holding period, number of trades, spread paid and account-level charges before deciding that one structure is cheaper.

4. Treat BJK as a different, broader comparison
The 2024 summary prospectus for BJK says it seeks to replicate the MVIS Global Gaming Index before fees and expenses. That description makes it a potentially relevant gaming comparison, but it does not establish that the fund is a pure sports-betting ETF. Gaming can include casinos, lotteries, equipment, technology and other businesses.
The available disclosure is older than the 2026 BETZ information. Do not infer current holdings, current fees, current strategy or current sports-betting exposure from the 2024 summary alone. Obtain the latest prospectus and holdings before making a detailed comparison.
A useful BJK comparison asks whether its benchmark supplies broader gaming exposure than BETZ, whether that changes the sector concentration in your portfolio and whether its current holdings overlap with BETZ or with stocks you already own. Those questions cannot be answered reliably from the 2024 summary prospectus alone.
5. Compare the businesses underneath the securities
Competition and market structure
Roundhill’s prospectus identifies competition from many participants, including illegal or unregulated companies, as well as pressure from leisure and entertainment businesses. A legal operator may spend heavily on promotions, technology and customer acquisition while competing for the same users. A supplier may face its own pricing pressure and customer concentration.
When comparing companies, separate reported revenue growth from the cost of buying that growth. Examine promotional intensity, customer retention, gross margin and contribution margin trends where the issuer discloses them. Rapid top-line growth with worsening acquisition economics can create a different risk profile from slower growth with improving margins.

Regulatory and licensing exposure
Expansion or licensing rules can change. A company’s addressable market may depend on approvals, operating conditions, tax treatment and compliance obligations in each jurisdiction. A fund spreads exposure across issuers, but it cannot diversify away a broad regulatory shift affecting the sector.
Map each operator’s jurisdictions and note whether a proposed expansion, renewal or rule change is material to the investment case. A stock investor must assess that exposure issuer by issuer; an ETF investor should check whether several holdings would be affected by the same change.
Privacy and cybersecurity
The prospectus highlights cybersecurity and privacy constraints and the potential harm from disclosure of confidential information. Betting platforms handle account, payment and behavioral data, making controls, incident response and vendor oversight material parts of company analysis.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSize and liquidity
Roundhill’s social disclosures note that smaller and mid-capitalization companies can be more volatile and less liquid because they have fewer resources or product lines and may be more sensitive to economic conditions. Treat that as the sponsor’s stated risk disclosure, not as an independent estimate of future volatility.
Liquidity matters twice: it affects how an individual stock trades, and it can affect an ETF’s spread when its underlying holdings are thinly traded. A large order may move the market, especially during a regulatory announcement, earnings release or broad risk-off session.
6. Research an individual betting stock
For a stock, read the latest annual and quarterly filings, earnings materials and risk factors. Build a short company profile covering:
- Revenue mix: separate sports wagering, online casino, lottery, media, technology and other activities where disclosed.
- Geographic footprint: list jurisdictions, licenses and the proportion of revenue tied to each market.
- Unit economics: examine customer acquisition spending, promotional intensity, retention, gross margin and contribution margin trends.
- Balance sheet: review cash, debt maturities, interest expense, share issuance and the path to funding operations.
- Competitive position: assess brand reach, product quality, platform reliability, supplier dependence and switching costs.
- Event risk: identify pending licenses, litigation, investigations, outages, data incidents or major product launches.
A stock can outperform a basket if its execution is unusually strong, but the reverse is also true. The investor must diagnose whether a price move reflects company fundamentals, sector sentiment or a temporary event.
Do not assume a company described as a betting stock gets all of its economics from sportsbooks. Broader gaming, lottery or technology activities can cushion or obscure sports-betting results. The issuer’s segment definitions and filing dates are more useful than a ticker label.
7. Research an ETF before buying
- Open the current prospectus. Confirm the investment objective, active or index status, principal strategies, diversification rules and principal risks.
- Download dated holdings. Record the largest positions, weights, countries, industries and the date of the file.
- Check overlap. Compare the ETF’s holdings with your existing funds; owning the same operators elsewhere increases effective concentration.
- Review costs. Use the current expense disclosure, then estimate spread, premium or discount and brokerage charges for your order.
- Read shareholder reports. Look for turnover, realized gains, securities lending, changes in strategy and material amendments.
- Set a monitoring rule. Decide how often you will review holdings, strategy and concentration, and what change would cause you to reduce the position.
A simple comparison worksheet
Put the ETF and each candidate stock in adjacent columns. For the ETF, fill in management status, expense ratio, top-five concentration, number of holdings, geographic mix, turnover and the date of the holdings file. For each stock, fill in revenue mix, market jurisdictions, cash, debt, dilution risk, liquidity and the next material event. Then mark which risks are company-specific and which could affect several positions at once.
Save the documents used for the decision. A holdings file without a date, an old strategy description or a promotional page can produce a misleading comparison. Repeating the worksheet after a material strategy change makes it easier to see what actually changed rather than relying on memory.

8. Decide which structure fits your purpose
| If your priority is… | Structure that may fit better | What you still must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Reducing dependence on one operator | An ETF basket, provided holdings are not dominated by a few names. | Top-position weights, overlap and shared regulatory exposure. |
| Expressing a high-conviction view on one issuer | An individual stock. | Valuation, balance sheet, execution and event risks. |
| Following a transparent rules-based benchmark | An index-based gaming fund. | Current index methodology and whether the fund still follows it. |
| Allowing a manager to select securities | An actively managed ETF such as BETZ after June 22, 2026. | Manager mandate, turnover, fees and the current prospectus. |
| Keeping the position as a small thematic allocation | Either structure, sized consistently with your risk tolerance. | Portfolio-level exposure and a rebalancing plan. |
Neither structure determines an appropriate position size by itself. The relevant question is how much a sector-wide drawdown or one company failure would affect your overall plan. Set that limit before buying, when the decision is less influenced by a recent price move.

- Calling every gaming fund a sports-betting fund: check the mandate and actual holdings.
- Using old strategy labels: BETZ’s active-management change took effect June 22, 2026.
- Quoting undated holdings: holdings and weights change; BETZ’s named top five are specifically as of June 30, 2026.
- Equating more tickers with broad diversification: shared customers, regulators and technology can link holdings.
- Comparing only expense ratios: include spreads, premiums or discounts, commissions and turnover.
- Ignoring liquidity: smaller companies and thinly traded ETFs can move sharply when orders are large or markets are stressed.
- Turning sponsor risk language into a forecast: disclosed risks describe possibilities, not predictions of a particular loss.
- Mixing dates: a 2024 BJK prospectus, a 2026 BETZ holdings file and a later trade confirmation answer different questions and should not be treated as one current snapshot.
10. A practical review schedule
At purchase, save the prospectus, holdings file, expense disclosure and your trade confirmation. Each quarter, review strategy, top holdings, concentration, material company developments and your original reason for owning the position. At least annually, compare the position with your overall asset allocation and rebalance according to a rule you set in advance rather than reacting to a single headline.
For an individual stock, add earnings, cash usage, debt and license developments to that schedule. For an ETF, add changes in management status, index methodology or portfolio construction. If the fund’s mandate or your thesis changes materially, reassess the position instead of assuming the original analysis still applies.
Frequently asked questions
How should an investor compare sports-betting ETFs with betting stocks?
Compare holdings and concentration, active versus index strategy, current expenses and trading frictions, then assess the operating and regulatory risks of the businesses underneath. An ETF reduces single-company dependence only to the extent that its holdings are not heavily concentrated or exposed to the same sector shock.
Is BETZ actively managed?
Roundhill says BETZ became actively managed at the open of trading on June 22, 2026. Use the current prospectus and sponsor page for its present mandate; older descriptions that call it a passive index tracker refer to an earlier structure.

Is a sports-betting ETF safer than one betting stock?
It can reduce the effect of one issuer’s failure, but it does not remove sector risk. Competition, licensing changes, illegal or unregulated alternatives, privacy problems and cybersecurity incidents can affect multiple holdings at once.
Is BJK a pure sports-betting ETF?
Not based on the 2024 summary prospectus alone. BJK seeks to replicate the MVIS Global Gaming Index, which may include broader casino, lottery, equipment and technology businesses. Check current documents before comparing its exposure in detail.

Bottom line for investors
Sports-betting ETFs versus betting stocks is a choice between relative diversification and concentrated company exposure—not between risk and no risk. Start with dated holdings and the current strategy. For BETZ, that means recognizing active management from June 22, 2026, reviewing the June 30, 2026 holdings disclosure and treating the reported 0.75% annualized six-month cost as historical. Use BJK’s 2024 index-tracking description only as an initial reference until current documents are checked. Then compare business risks, trading frictions and portfolio fit before deciding how much, if any, exposure belongs in your plan.
