Buying one share gives you an interest in that portfolio; it does not give you a sportsbook, a wager on a game or direct ownership of any single operator. Shares trade on an exchange, so your return depends on the fund’s holdings and the price at which you trade.
Roundhill Sports Betting & iGaming ETF (BETZ) is a useful current example, but its structure changed on June 22, 2026: it became actively managed. Its June 30, 2026 fact sheet shows a global, concentrated portfolio rather than a basket limited to U.S. sportsbook companies. The sections below explain the mechanics, dated holdings, costs, risks and a practical way to compare similar funds.

What is a sports betting ETF?
An exchange-traded fund (ETF) pools investors’ money and uses it to buy a portfolio of securities. In this theme, those securities are generally shares of companies that operate sportsbooks, internet casinos, lotteries, gaming platforms, data services or equipment businesses. The ETF issues shares that trade during normal exchange hours.

You do not hold a betting account, place a wager, receive a share of a sportsbook’s handle or control the companies in the portfolio.

The label “sports betting” also does not guarantee pure-play exposure. A thematic fund can include international gaming groups, lottery operators, platform providers and suppliers. Read the mandate and the holdings rather than inferring the portfolio from the name.
How sports betting ETFs work when you buy and sell
- Open a brokerage account. You need an account that can trade exchange-listed securities and access the exchange on which the ETF is listed. BETZ trades on NYSE Arca.
- Enter an order for the ticker. A market order executes at available prices; a limit order sets the highest price you will pay or the lowest price you will accept. The quoted market price can move while the order is being filled.
- Trade at the market price, not necessarily net asset value. The fund calculates a net asset value (NAV) from the value of its holdings, usually at the end of the trading day. ETF shares can trade above or below that NAV during the session.
- Receive portfolio exposure. Once filled, your gain or loss follows the ETF share price, which reflects changes in the underlying companies, investor demand, distributions and trading conditions.
- Pay the fund’s operating expenses indirectly. The expense ratio is taken from fund assets rather than billed as a separate invoice. Brokerage commissions, regulatory fees and the bid-ask spread are additional trading costs that depend on your broker and the market.
Traditional index ETFs normally seek to replicate an index by holding its component securities in their stated weights. An adviser may use representative sampling when buying every component is impractical because of cost, illiquidity, unavailability or legal limits. That description applies to a fund’s former passive approach; it should not be used to describe BETZ’s current management process.
BETZ became actively managed in 2026
Effective June 22, 2026, BETZ stopped being described as an index-tracking fund and became actively managed. Its investment committee selects securities under the fund’s current mandate. Older pages and documents may still explain the index the fund previously followed; those descriptions are historical and should be dated as such.

Active management means the committee can change positions without waiting for an index rebalance, subject to the fund’s governing documents and applicable limits. It does not mean the manager can avoid losses, guarantee a particular mix of companies or keep the portfolio concentrated in U.S. sportsbooks. The fund’s holdings and allocations can change.

What BETZ owned: the June 30, 2026 snapshot
Roundhill Investments’ fact sheet dated June 30, 2026 reported 23 holdings and $52.6 million in assets under management. The ten largest positions were:

These percentages are a point-in-time snapshot, not a promise about today’s weights. A 7.54% position, for example, can become a smaller percentage if other holdings rise, or a larger percentage if its share price rises relative to the rest of the portfolio.
Sector and country exposure
The same fact sheet reported that 96.64% of assets were classified as Casinos & Gaming and 2.96% as Leisure Facilities. Geographic exposure was also international:

The country figures show why “sports betting ETF” is not synonymous with “U.S. sports betting ETF.” Overseas companies can add different currencies, regulators, tax systems and consumer markets to your exposure.

What the live page shows—and why dates matter
Roundhill’s live BETZ page identified Evolution AB, Flutter Entertainment PLC, Allwyn AG, DraftKings Inc. and Lottomatica Group SpA as its top five names as of September 30, 2026. The captured page did not display weights, and its dynamic holdings table showed no date. Use that page’s live table for current percentages rather than treating the June fact sheet as current. The issuer states that holdings and allocations can change.
When you read any ETF page, record the “as of” date beside every weight, asset figure and ranking. A portfolio can change through trading, corporate actions, market movements and rebalancing; an undated list is not a reliable current allocation.
Costs, price differences and liquidity
Expense ratio
BETZ lists a 0.75% expense ratio. This is an annual operating-cost rate deducted from fund assets; it is not a commission charged each time you place an order. The dollar impact depends on your average investment balance and the fund’s performance.
Market price versus NAV
Because ETF shares trade between buyers and sellers, the transaction price can be higher or lower than NAV. In liquid markets, authorized participants and other traders often help keep the gap small, but it is not guaranteed. A premium means you are paying more than the reported per-share value of the portfolio; a discount means you are paying less.

Bid-ask spread and commissions
The bid is the highest displayed buying price and the ask is the lowest displayed selling price. Their difference is the spread, an implicit cost that can be material when trading volume is low or markets are volatile. Your broker may also charge a commission or other transaction fee. Consider a limit order and check the spread before submitting a trade, especially outside the busiest market hours.
Principal risks disclosed for BETZ
The fund’s SEC-filed summary prospectus identifies risks rather than predicting a particular outcome. It states, “As with any investment, there is a risk that you could lose all or a portion of your investment in the Fund.” Key sources of uncertainty include:
- Industry competition: Sportsbooks, casinos, lotteries, technology providers and other operators compete for customers and licensing rights. Expansion by regulated or unregulated competitors can pressure revenue and margins.
- Regulation and licensing: Gambling rules differ by jurisdiction and can change. A company may lose a license, face advertising or product restrictions, or incur compliance costs. Regulation also includes cybersecurity and privacy obligations.
- Cybersecurity and privacy: Online betting and gaming businesses process account, payment and identity data. Breaches, service outages or tighter privacy requirements can damage operations and increase costs.
- Discretionary spending: Many gaming purchases depend on consumers having money left after essential expenses. A weak economy or household-budget pressure can reduce activity.
- Currency exposure: International holdings can rise or fall because of exchange-rate movements even when a company’s local share price is unchanged in its home currency.
- Concentration and non-diversification: The prospectus says the fund was concentrated in the Casinos and Gaming Sub-Industry as of March 31, 2026 and classifies the fund as non-diversified. A problem affecting one industry or several large positions can therefore have an outsized effect.
- General market and company risk: Share prices can decline because of interest rates, investor sentiment, earnings disappointments, management decisions or events unrelated to betting volumes.
These are disclosed possibilities, not forecasts that any one event will occur or that the fund will lose a specified amount.

Sports-betting-focused versus broad gaming funds
A broader gaming ETF can own casinos and casino hotels, sports betting, lottery services, gaming services, gaming technology and gaming equipment. The SEC-filed summary prospectus for the VanEck Gaming ETF, dated February 1, 2024, describes that wider scope. It is useful as a dated example of a broad gaming mandate, but that document should not be used to infer the fund’s current fee, holdings or performance.
A sports-betting-focused fund may still own many of those adjacent businesses. The practical distinction is the mandate and the resulting portfolio mix, not the marketing word on the ticker. Read the current prospectus and holdings file for every fund you consider.
A practical pre-investment checklist
- Read the current prospectus. Confirm the objective, active or passive status, diversification classification and principal risks.
- Check the latest holdings date. Separate a live portfolio table from an older fact sheet and note whether weights are available.
- Measure concentration. Add the top positions and inspect sector and country allocations; do not assume that 20 or 30 holdings provide broad diversification.
- Estimate total trading cost. Combine the expense ratio with the expected bid-ask spread, any commission and the possibility of buying at a premium to NAV.
- Consider currency and regulation. Identify countries represented and ask whether foreign exchange or licensing changes could affect your tolerance for loss.
- Decide what exposure you actually want. If your goal is a single sportsbook, an ETF will dilute that exposure across companies. If you want a theme with less company-specific risk, confirm that the fund’s concentration is acceptable.
- Use a suitable position size. A thematic, non-diversified fund is generally more volatile and less broadly diversified than a total-market fund; avoid treating it as a replacement for a diversified core portfolio without understanding that trade-off.
Who might use a sports betting ETF?
An investor who deliberately wants a basket of publicly traded gaming-related companies may value the convenience of one exchange-traded security instead of researching and buying each company separately. The ETF can also spread exposure across operators, suppliers and countries, although the BETZ disclosures show that the portfolio remains concentrated by industry.
The structure is a poor fit for someone seeking a guaranteed return, a direct wager on a particular match, a single-company investment or a low-volatility substitute for a broad-market fund. The 0.75% operating cost, market-price spread, foreign exposure and disclosed loss potential all need to fit your plan and risk capacity.
Bottom line
Sports betting ETFs are investment portfolios, not bets. BETZ illustrates the distinction: since June 22, 2026 it has been actively managed, and its June 30 portfolio held 23 globally exposed gaming-related companies with 96.64% classified in Casinos & Gaming. Check the latest holdings, mandate, expense ratio, trading spread and prospectus risks before deciding whether that concentrated theme belongs in your portfolio.
