India’s separately named SEBI Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) follows different rules: its investor FAQ issued on 22 September 2026 states a ₹10 lakh aggregate threshold across the strategies of one SIF at PAN level, with an exemption for accredited investors.
Those figures are access rules, not guarantees that a particular fund will accept your subscription, that the investment is suitable, or that you can redeem whenever you choose. The fund’s offering documents, tax rules in your country and your own risk capacity still control the practical decision.

Start with the jurisdiction: two products share a name
“Specialised investment fund” usually refers to Luxembourg’s SIF regime in European fund documentation. India’s Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) also uses the English name “Specialized Investment Fund” for a newer category within its mutual-fund framework. The legal definitions, regulators, investor tests, currency and consequences of falling below a threshold are unrelated.

Always label the jurisdiction when discussing a minimum. A Luxembourg threshold cannot be applied to an Indian SIF, and an Indian PAN-level threshold says nothing about eligibility for a Luxembourg vehicle.

How Luxembourg’s well-informed-investor test works
Article 2 of the amended Luxembourg SIF law defines who may invest as a “well-informed investor.” It distinguishes investors by status rather than imposing one universal subscription amount.
Institutional investors
An institutional investor is included in the statutory definition. The law therefore does not make EUR 100,000 a blanket minimum for every institutional investor. The fund may still impose its own minimum, documentation or dealing conditions in its offering documents.
Professional investors
A professional investor within the specified MiFID definition also qualifies as a well-informed investor. Professional classification is a legal and regulatory status, not a conclusion that a particular strategy is appropriate for you. A manager can request evidence of status and experience before accepting an order.

Other investors: two alternative routes
An investor who is neither institutional nor professionally classified has two routes stated in Article 2:
- Investment route: sign a written confirmation that you adhere to well-informed-investor status and invest at least EUR 100,000.
- Assessment route: sign the same written confirmation and have a qualifying credit institution, investment firm, UCITS management company or authorised alternative investment fund manager assess and certify your expertise, experience and knowledge to appraise the investment.
The assessment route is an alternative to the EUR 100,000 route for this “other investor” category. It is not a way to bypass every fund’s commercial minimum, suitability checks or anti-money-laundering documentation.

What the Luxembourg EUR 100,000 figure does—and does not—mean
EUR 100,000 is a statutory qualification route for an “other” investor. It is not a promise that a SIF accepts a subscription at exactly that amount. A fund can set a higher initial minimum, require additional commitments, limit dealing dates or reject an application under its constitutional documents and risk controls.
Nor is the amount a suitability test. Meeting it does not show that you can tolerate a loss, wait through an illiquid period, understand leverage or bear the tax consequences in your residence. Before signing, read the specific fund’s offering memorandum, subscription agreement, risk disclosures, valuation policy, fees, redemption provisions and investor-reporting arrangements.

Step-by-step: checking eligibility for a Luxembourg SIF
- Identify your legal category. Ask the fund administrator or adviser whether you are being documented as an institutional investor, a MiFID professional investor or an “other investor.” Do not assume that wealth alone creates professional status.
- Read the fund’s definition and application form. Confirm the stated minimum, permitted investor types, commitment mechanics, dealing dates and documents required. The statutory EUR 100,000 route does not replace these terms.
- If you use the investment route, document the amount. The application must support the required written adherence and the qualifying investment. Check whether the fund measures the amount at subscription, commitment or another point specified in its documents.
- If you use the assessment route, use an eligible assessor. The assessment must come from one of the qualifying institutions or an authorised AIFM listed in Article 2 and must certify the expertise, experience and knowledge needed to appraise the investment.
- Complete suitability, identification and tax forms separately. Eligibility is only an access condition. The manager still has to complete client identification, source-of-funds checks, tax reporting and any product-governance review that applies.
- Obtain written confirmation of acceptance. Do not treat a completed form or a bank transfer as proof that the fund has accepted you. Ask for the administrator’s confirmation and the effective dealing date.
Are Luxembourg SIFs automatically suitable once you qualify?
No. The well-informed-investor test answers who may access the vehicle; it does not answer whether the investment belongs in your portfolio. Consider at least:
- Loss capacity: private assets, derivatives or concentrated strategies can lose substantial value.
- Time horizon: valuation and sale of underlying assets may take months or longer.
- Liquidity needs: the fund may offer only periodic dealing, gates, notice periods or suspension rights.
- Leverage and currency: borrowing and non-euro assets can amplify losses and exchange-rate movements.
- Tax residence: the treatment of distributions, gains and reporting differs by country and investor type.
- Information quality: review valuation methodology, audited statements, conflicts policy, depositary arrangements and service providers.
Consider regulated legal or tax advice where the structure, assets or cross-border reporting is complex. A qualification decision should not be presented as a personal investment recommendation.
What is the Luxembourg SIF subscription tax?
Guichet.lu describes an annual subscription tax of 0.01% of a SIF’s net assets, subject to statutory exemptions. This is a fund-level charge calculated on the vehicle’s net assets; it is not a 0.01% personal tax rate on your subscription or return.

Your own tax bill depends on residence, entity type, distributions, disposals and applicable reporting rules. The fund’s accounts and tax disclosures should explain how operating taxes and expenses affect net asset value. Obtain local advice before assuming that the fund-level charge is your only tax cost.

SEBI’s investor FAQ, issued 22 September 2026 and stated as current to 21 September 2026, sets a general ₹10 lakh aggregate investment threshold at PAN level across all strategies of a particular SIF. An accredited investor is exempt from that threshold. The aggregation is within that particular SIF; it is not a universal minimum across every Indian fund or across your entire investment portfolio.
What counts as the minimum?
The FAQ describes the amount as an aggregate across the SIF’s strategies for the investor’s PAN. Read the current scheme and account documentation to see how subscriptions, switches and redemptions are recorded. Do not convert the ₹10 lakh figure into euros or treat it as equivalent to Luxembourg’s EUR 100,000 route.
Active breach after an investor-initiated transaction
If an investor actively causes the holding to fall below the threshold—for example, by redeeming or otherwise reducing the investment—the FAQ says units across that SIF’s strategies are debit-frozen. The investor receives 30 calendar days to restore the minimum. If it is not restored, the frozen units are automatically redeemed at the net asset value applicable on the next business day after the thirtieth calendar day, according to the FAQ.
Passive fall caused by NAV movement
A decline caused only by the SIF’s NAV falling is treated differently. The FAQ says passive NAV declines do not trigger compulsory redemption. While the holding remains below ₹10 lakh, however, only full redemption of the remaining SIF investment is permitted. The distinction matters: an investor who has not traded can face a different outcome from one who actively breaches the threshold.

Can you redeem an Indian SIF whenever you want?
Not necessarily. The asset-management company sets a strategy’s redemption frequency within the applicable rules and discloses it in the ISID. SEBI’s FAQ says a notice period of up to 15 working days may apply. The ISID may also specify a lock-in, maturity date, exit load or other restrictions. “SIF” alone does not imply daily liquidity.
Before investing, locate the current ISID and check:
- dealing and valuation days;
- the maximum notice period and submission cut-off time;
- lock-in or maturity provisions;
- exit loads and any investor-level charges;
- gates, suspension powers or in-kind settlement provisions; and
- the process for restoring a threshold after an active breach.
These Indian liquidity rules should not be transferred to a Luxembourg SIF. Luxembourg terms are fund-specific and were not established for a particular vehicle here.

A practical due-diligence checklist
- Write the jurisdiction and legal name of the product at the top of your notes.
- Record the exact investor test: Luxembourg category and route, or Indian PAN-level threshold and accreditation status.
- Obtain the current offering documents or, in India, the ISID, KIM and SAI.
- Confirm the fund’s own minimum, fees, dealing calendar, valuation method and redemption restrictions.
- Ask how threshold breaches, switches, partial redemptions and transfers are handled.
- Model a severe loss and a delayed exit before committing money.
- Check fund-level charges separately from your personal taxes and reporting obligations.
- Reconfirm the rules immediately before subscribing because regulatory FAQs and fund documents can change.
Common investor questions
What is the minimum investment requirement for a SIF?
It depends on the country. For a Luxembourg SIF, EUR 100,000 is one qualification route for an “other” investor, with a qualifying expertise assessment as the alternative; institutional and professional investors are separate categories. For an Indian SEBI SIF, the September 2026 FAQ states ₹10 lakh aggregated across that particular SIF’s strategies at PAN level, subject to the accredited-investor exemption.
Who is eligible to invest in a Luxembourg SIF?
An institutional investor or a professional investor within the specified MiFID definition qualifies under the statutory well-informed-investor definition. Another investor must provide written adherence and use either the EUR 100,000 route or the qualifying assessment route.
Can an investor be assessed instead of investing EUR 100,000?
Yes, for a Luxembourg investor who is not already institutional or professional. A qualifying credit institution, investment firm, UCITS management company or authorised AIFM must certify the investor’s expertise, experience and knowledge to appraise the investment.
Does Luxembourg’s threshold apply to an Indian SIF?
No. India’s product is a distinct SEBI category with its own ₹10 lakh PAN-level rule and accredited-investor exemption.
What happens if an Indian SIF investment falls below ₹10 lakh?
An investor-initiated active breach leads to a debit freeze and 30 calendar days to restore the threshold; otherwise the FAQ describes automatic redemption at the next business day’s applicable NAV after that period. A passive NAV decline does not force redemption, but only full redemption is permitted while the holding remains below the threshold.
Is Luxembourg’s 0.01% subscription tax my personal tax?
No. It is an annual fund-level charge on SIF net assets, with statutory exemptions. Your personal tax depends on your residence and circumstances.
