The Space Force publicly announced a $2.29 billion award for a space-based communications network and a separate $4.16 billion award for airborne-threat tracking. Together, the awards total $6.45 billion, but they are not one confirmed “Golden Dome contract,” and SpaceX is not building the entire missile-defense system.
What the original $2 billion report said
In October 2025, reports said SpaceX was expected to receive approximately $2 billion to develop a satellite constellation capable of tracking missiles and aircraft for the Trump administration’s Golden Dome initiative. That was a reported expectation based on people familiar with the matter and predecisional information—not an official Pentagon award announcement.

The report also did not mean that SpaceX would own or build Golden Dome as a whole. Golden Dome is intended to be a multi-layer defense architecture combining sensors, communications, command-and-control systems, and interceptors.
What happened next
- January 27, 2025: Executive Order 14186 established the “Iron Dome for America” initiative, later referred to by the Defense Department as Golden Dome for America.
- May 20, 2025: The Defense Department said it was developing an architecture and implementation plan covering ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise-missile threats. The Pentagon’s statement did not identify a single contractor responsible for the system.
- October 2025: Reporting described an expected SpaceX award of roughly $2 billion for missile- and aircraft-tracking satellites.
- May 26, 2026: The Space Force announced a $2.29 billion competitively awarded firm-fixed-price Other Transaction Authority delivery order to SpaceX for the Space Data Network Backbone.
- May 29, 2026: The Space Force announced a separate $4.16 billion competitive award to SpaceX for the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program.
- July 31, 2026: The Space Force selected Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as technical-direction agent for a separate Space-Based Interceptor program supporting Golden Dome.
Because of these later announcements, “will reportedly award” is no longer an accurate description of the status. The better description is that SpaceX has received multiple Space Force awards for capabilities that can support Golden Dome.

What the $2.29 billion Space Data Network award does
The Space Data Network Backbone is primarily a communications and data-transport network, not an interceptor. According to the Space Systems Command announcement, it will use a proliferated low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation to move military data rapidly and resiliently among sensors, command systems, and weapons.
The network is intended to provide secure, high-capacity, low-latency connectivity—effectively a data-backhaul layer for the broader Space Data Network architecture. The award requires a fully operational prototype capability by the end of 2027.
That distinction matters. The SDN Backbone does not itself detect every missile, decide how to respond, or destroy incoming weapons. It is the communications layer that could help those other systems exchange information quickly enough to support military operations.

What the $4.16 billion SB-AMTI award does
SB-AMTI stands for Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator. It is the more direct match for the earlier description of satellites tracking aircraft and missiles.
The Space Force says the program is intended to provide global, space-based sensing and tracking of airborne threats. Such a capability could reduce reliance on aircraft operating in contested or dangerous airspace. The official announcement describes the award as supporting the broader Joint Force, rather than labeling it a standalone Golden Dome contract.

SpaceX was placed within a broader vendor framework intended to preserve competition and diversify suppliers. The award therefore should not be read as proof that every SB-AMTI satellite will be exclusively dedicated to Golden Dome.
How SpaceX’s awards could fit into Golden Dome
A missile-defense architecture needs several connected layers:
Recommended Free Tools
- Detection and tracking: Space-based and terrestrial sensors identify missiles, aircraft, and other threats.
- Data transport: Networks such as the SDN Backbone move sensor information securely and quickly.
- Battle management: Command-and-control systems evaluate the data and determine how to respond.
- Interception: Surface-based and potentially space-based weapons attempt to destroy the threat.
- Assessment and integration: The system must confirm results and continue operating despite jamming, cyberattacks, or satellite losses.
A simplified flow is:
Sensors → data transport → battle management → interceptor → assessment
SpaceX’s two publicly announced awards appear to address at least two enabling layers: airborne-threat sensing and data transport. They do not cover the entire architecture. The Space Force has separately pursued a Space-Based Interceptor program for a proliferated low-Earth-orbit constellation intended to support boost-, midcourse-, and glide-phase engagements. In July 2026, it selected Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as the program’s technical-direction agent.
Are these awards one contract?
No. The original reported $2 billion expectation should not be conflated with the later awards.

- $2.29 billion: Space Data Network Backbone.
- $4.16 billion: Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator.
- $6.45 billion: The combined value of those two publicly announced SpaceX awards.
Adding the figures does not mean that $6.45 billion belongs to one Golden Dome program or one satellite constellation. The awards cover separate capabilities, and the official announcements describe them in broader Space Force and Joint Force terms.

What “Other Transaction Authority” means here
The Space Force described both awards as competitive Other Transaction Authority agreements. OTAs are a Defense Department acquisition mechanism used for certain prototype, research, and rapid-acquisition efforts. They are not identical to conventional contracts governed by the Federal Acquisition Regulation.
The OTA designation alone does not mean the awards were noncompetitive. The Space Force’s announcements explicitly describe the awards as competitively made. The trade-off is that faster commercial-style acquisition can make requirements, cost comparisons, testing plans, and accountability harder for outside observers to evaluate.
Why the procurement is politically sensitive
Elon Musk was a prominent political ally of President Donald Trump during the period when SpaceX was reportedly being considered for Golden Dome work. That relationship prompted conflict-of-interest concerns and congressional requests for scrutiny of the Pentagon’s procurement process.

A congressional letter asked inspectors general to review the process after reports identified SpaceX as a leading contender. Those concerns do not establish that the awards were improperly influenced. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the procurement attracted oversight because of the political relationship, the size of the proposed work, and the importance of the technology.
The Space Force has also emphasized competition and a diversified vendor pool. That approach is intended to reduce dependence on one company, satellite design, communications layer, or launch provider.

Several figures have circulated, but they describe different scopes and assumptions:
| Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| Approximately $175 billion | An early administration estimate associated with deployment over an aggressive, shorter period. |
| Approximately $185 billion | A later estimate from the Golden Dome office for deployment over the next decade. |
| Approximately $1.2 trillion | The Congressional Budget Office’s May 2026 estimate for a notional architecture over 20 years, including development, deployment, and operations. |
These numbers are not necessarily contradictory estimates of the same budget line. They use different time horizons, architectures, and assumptions.
The Congressional Budget Office cautioned that the Defense Department had not publicly released enough detail about its final objective architecture for CBO to estimate the actual program precisely. Its $1.2 trillion figure applies to a notional system broadly consistent with the executive order, not necessarily the Pentagon’s final design. CBO identified the space-based interceptor layer as a particularly large cost component.

What remains unknown
Public announcements do not yet answer several questions that will determine whether Golden Dome can work as proposed:
- How many satellites will each constellation require?
- What are the final satellite designs, sensors, and orbital configurations?
- How will SpaceX’s systems interface with other companies’ sensors, interceptors, and command networks?
- What classified performance requirements will apply?
- How will the network operate if satellites are jammed, attacked, spoofed, or lost?
- Can sensors distinguish genuine threats from decoys, clutter, and deceptive signals?
- How quickly can data reach battle-management systems during hypersonic or maneuvering attacks?
- What independent testing will occur before operational deployment?
- How much will replenishment, launch, cybersecurity, and long-term operations cost?
Commercial satellite production and launch capacity may help the government move faster, but commercial scale does not automatically prove military suitability. Golden Dome would require secure data handling, resilient command and control, sensor calibration, interoperability, and performance under attack.
The bottom line
The original approximately $2 billion SpaceX report was not entirely disconnected from what followed, but it is no longer the best description of the facts. As of August 18, 2026, the Space Force has publicly announced a $2.29 billion Space Data Network Backbone award and a separate $4.16 billion SB-AMTI award to SpaceX.
Those programs cover data transport and airborne-threat sensing—important potential parts of Golden Dome, but not the entire missile-defense shield. Readers should not treat the awards as one $2 billion contract, as proof that SpaceX alone is building Golden Dome, or as a definitive measure of the program’s eventual cost.
