There is no single “best” space investment among SpaceX, Rocket Lab and AST SpaceMobile. They represent different bets: SpaceX is a scaled launch-and-connectivity platform, Rocket Lab is a publicly observable launch and space-systems operator, and AST SpaceMobile is a concentrated direct-to-device constellation buildout. The right choice depends on the security you can actually buy, the valuation you are paying, how much current revenue you require, and how much execution risk your portfolio can absorb.
Use the comparison below to match each business with a portfolio role rather than ranking them on launch headlines alone. Company-reported figures are identified by period and should not be treated as independent estimates.

The short answer: match the company to the risk you want
SpaceX offers the broadest operating exposure. Its 2026 prospectus describes launch systems alongside Starlink fixed, mobile, maritime, aviation, enterprise and government connectivity. As of March 31, 2026, SpaceX said Starlink Mobile served approximately 7.4 million monthly unique devices in approximately 30 countries. The same prospectus described roughly 9,600 broadband and mobile satellites and more than 700 terabits per second of cumulative downlink capacity. Those are issuer-reported figures, not independent measurements.
Rocket Lab has the clearest current public operating record in this comparison. It reported $602 million of revenue for 2025 and a $1.85 billion backlog at year-end 2025. Its first-quarter 2026 release reported $200 million of quarterly revenue and backlog of more than $2.2 billion. The trade-off is that its larger Neutron launch vehicle remains a development and execution milestone rather than an established revenue stream.

AST SpaceMobile is the most focused and dependency-heavy bet. It is building a satellite network intended to connect ordinary smartphones directly to satellites. Its 2025 filing describes a Verizon agreement for service beginning in 2026, spectrum-access arrangements and substantial launch and capital commitments. A second-quarter 2026 update reported approximately $1.30 billion of aggregate contracted revenue and government awards, while a year-end 2025 update targeted 45 to 60 satellites in orbit by the end of 2026. Contracts and awards are not the same as recognized revenue, profit or guaranteed commercial success.
For most investors, the prudent starting point is a diversified core portfolio with any single space company treated as a satellite position. The “safest” choice is not the company with the most exciting technology; it is the exposure whose valuation, liquidity, concentration and downside you can understand and hold through setbacks.
What each company actually sells
SpaceX: launch plus a vertically integrated connectivity platform
SpaceX combines launch services with a large communications business. Falcon missions support the company’s own constellation and external customers, while Starlink sells fixed broadband and mobile, maritime, aviation, enterprise and government connectivity. That combination matters for portfolio analysis: SpaceX is not simply a launch-provider investment.
Recommended Free Tools
Its launch pages document frequent Falcon 9 missions and repeated first-stage reuse. A July 2026 Starlink mission used a booster on its 13th flight, an example of the reuse model SpaceX has continued to scale. Launch reliability and reuse can support Starlink expansion, third-party missions and internal cost control at the same time, although continued execution is required to preserve those advantages.
The investment question is access as much as business quality. SpaceX offering status, pricing, any ticker and brokerage availability can change. Before committing money, verify whether the security is currently tradable for you, the legal structure of the interest, transfer restrictions, fees, valuation and reporting rights. A compelling private-company narrative is not useful if you cannot obtain or exit the investment on acceptable terms.
Rocket Lab: an end-to-end public space company
Rocket Lab describes an end-to-end business spanning launch services, spacecraft, components and on-orbit solutions. Its Electron vehicle provides the launch exposure, while space-systems work supplies spacecraft platforms, components and other hardware. Government programs and hypersonic HASTE work add another demand stream.
The disclosed revenue and backlog provide more evidence to analyze than a pre-commercial story. Rocket Lab reported $602 million in 2025 revenue and $1.85 billion of backlog at the end of that year. In the first quarter of 2026, it reported $200 million of revenue and more than $2.2 billion of backlog. Backlog indicates contracted work under the company’s definitions; timing, margins, cancellations, production capacity and customer performance still determine what becomes revenue and cash flow.

Rocket Lab’s growth case also depends on Electron cadence, continuing space-systems demand, government programs and development of the larger Neutron vehicle. Neutron could expand the addressable launch market, but development spending, testing, schedule changes and financing needs create a distinct risk from the already operating Electron and space-systems businesses.
AST SpaceMobile: a direct-to-device constellation buildout
AST SpaceMobile is pursuing a different proposition: connecting standard smartphones directly to satellites, rather than requiring a dedicated satellite handset. Its 2025 Form 10-K describes a Verizon agreement for service beginning in 2026, spectrum and satellite-capacity arrangements, and the capital and launch commitments needed to deploy the network.
The company’s year-end 2025 update targeted 45 to 60 satellites in orbit by the end of 2026. Its second-quarter 2026 update reported approximately $1.30 billion of aggregate contracted revenue and government awards. Those figures show commercial and government interest, but the investment still depends on deploying enough satellites, obtaining and using spectrum, securing launches, financing the buildout, integrating with carriers and activating paying service at scale.
That chain makes AST SpaceMobile a focused, high-beta connectivity position. A delay in one link can affect the whole commercialization timetable. Investors should therefore distinguish a signed arrangement or award from recurring service revenue and from free cash flow.

How the investment cases differ
1. Investability and valuation
Start with a practical question: what instrument can you buy today? For SpaceX, the prospectus and any current offering materials must be checked for eligibility, pricing, liquidity, transfer limits, fees and reporting. A private or limited-access interest can behave very differently from a listed share, even when the underlying company is strong.
For Rocket Lab and AST SpaceMobile, verify the current listing, ticker, exchange, share class and corporate actions before placing an order. Listing status, trading access and valuation are time-sensitive. Do not use an old price, a private-market headline valuation or a secondary-market quote as though it were a current, freely tradable market value.
Valuation is the bridge between a good business and a good investment. Compare enterprise value or market capitalization with realistic revenue, gross-margin, cash-burn and capital needs. For SpaceX, a large platform can justify a premium only if growth and profitability assumptions support it. For Rocket Lab, the market may capitalize future Neutron and space-systems growth before those results appear in reported earnings. For AST SpaceMobile, investors may be paying for a successful network rollout years before recurring service economics are established.

2. Current revenue and backlog visibility
Rocket Lab provides the most directly comparable operating disclosure in this set: $602 million of 2025 revenue, $1.85 billion of year-end backlog, then $200 million of first-quarter 2026 revenue and more than $2.2 billion of backlog. Examine how much backlog is scheduled for each period, the mix between launch and space systems, expected margins and the customer concentration behind it.

Its recurring-connectivity model can be economically different from launch contracts, but investors still need current financial statements and valuation terms before judging returns.
AST SpaceMobile’s approximately $1.30 billion of contracted revenue and government awards is a meaningful commercial indicator, not a substitute for recognized revenue. Ask what conditions must be met, when payments are due, which commitments are cancellable and what additional satellites and ground infrastructure are required to deliver the contracts.
3. Business concentration
SpaceX spreads exposure across launch and several connectivity markets. That breadth can reduce dependence on one customer or product, but it also creates a larger platform to value and execute. A problem in one segment may be offset by another; a company-wide capital or governance issue can affect all of them.
Rocket Lab combines launch with space systems, components and on-orbit services. Its diversification is narrower than SpaceX’s but broader than a pure launch or pure constellation company. The portfolio still has meaningful launch sensitivity, and Neutron adds a major new technical program.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
AST SpaceMobile is concentrated on direct-to-device network execution. Carrier relationships, spectrum rights, satellite performance, launch availability and customer adoption are not interchangeable sources of revenue. Concentration can produce larger upside if the model works, but fewer ways to offset a delay.
4. Execution milestones
- SpaceX: monitor launch cadence and reliability, booster reuse, Starlink subscriber or device growth, network capacity, service economics and expansion across mobile, enterprise, maritime, aviation and government markets.
- Rocket Lab: monitor Electron mission performance and cadence, space-systems bookings and delivery, government and HASTE work, cash use, manufacturing capacity and Neutron test and launch milestones.
- AST SpaceMobile: monitor satellite production and launches, the path toward 45 to 60 satellites in orbit by the end of 2026, spectrum and regulatory milestones, carrier activation, service availability and cash requirements.
A milestone is useful only when you define what success looks like and what happens if it slips. “Satellite launched” is not the same as “commercial service operating,” just as “Neutron test completed” is not the same as profitable launch operations.

5. Capital and partner dependence
AST SpaceMobile’s own filings make the dependency chain especially visible: it needs capital, launches, spectrum access, satellite capacity and carrier relationships to turn the network design into service. Financing terms can change shareholder dilution and the pace of deployment. A launch delay can defer revenue while fixed costs continue.
Rocket Lab’s disclosures emphasize development spending and the resources required for Neutron, alongside the capital needs of its operating businesses. Track cash and cash equivalents, operating cash flow, capital expenditures and research-and-development spending rather than relying on backlog alone.

SpaceX’s integrated expansion requires substantial ongoing investment in launch infrastructure, satellites, ground systems and connectivity capacity. Vertical integration can reduce supplier dependence and improve coordination, but it also concentrates capital allocation and execution decisions inside one platform.
6. Connectivity versus launch and space-systems exposure
Choose SpaceX or AST SpaceMobile when your thesis is primarily about communications networks and recurring connectivity, while recognizing that the two models are at very different stages and scales. Choose Rocket Lab when you want a more observable combination of launch and space-hardware revenue and are willing to underwrite Neutron development. If your thesis is only about launch cadence, do not ignore SpaceX’s connectivity economics or treat AST SpaceMobile as a launch peer; their revenue models are different.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which portfolio objective fits each company?
When SpaceX may fit
- You want one platform spanning launch and multiple connectivity markets.
- You can verify a legitimate investment route, its valuation and its liquidity before buying.
- You can tolerate complex platform-execution and valuation risk.
- You value scale and vertical integration more than a simple, easily modeled segment.
SpaceX is a poor fit if you cannot verify the offering terms or if your portfolio cannot tolerate an illiquid or difficult-to-price position.
When Rocket Lab may fit
- You want a directly observable operating company with disclosed revenue and backlog.
- You prefer exposure spread across launch, spacecraft, components and on-orbit services.
- You accept that Neutron development can consume capital and miss milestones.
- You are prepared to evaluate launch reliability, customer concentration and cash generation, not just bookings.
Rocket Lab is a poor fit if you want a mature, low-volatility industrial company or cannot tolerate development-program risk.
When AST SpaceMobile may fit
- You seek focused upside from direct-to-device cellular connectivity.
- You understand that satellite deployment, spectrum, carriers, financing and launches must all progress together.
- You can withstand substantial volatility and the possibility of dilution or delayed commercialization.
- You will track service activation and cash needs rather than treating awards as completed sales.
AST SpaceMobile is a poor fit if you need established recurring revenue, near-term profitability or a business with many independent revenue offsets.

A due-diligence process before buying any of them
- Define the exposure. Write down whether you want launch, recurring connectivity, space hardware, or a speculative technology milestone. If you cannot state the exposure in one sentence, comparison shopping by headlines will be misleading.
- Confirm the instrument. Check the current ticker or offering documents, exchange or marketplace, share class, eligibility rules, fees, lockups, transfer restrictions and liquidity. Recheck SpaceX offering status, pricing and brokerage access immediately before acting.
- Read the latest primary filing. Use the current prospectus, annual report and earnings release. Record the reporting date beside every number so a 2025 figure is not mistaken for a 2026 run rate.
- Separate contracted work from recognized results. For Rocket Lab, reconcile backlog with quarterly revenue, delivery schedules, margins and cancellations. For AST SpaceMobile, identify the conditions attached to the approximately $1.30 billion of contracted revenue and government awards. For SpaceX, distinguish device counts and capacity from revenue and profit.
- Map the next three milestones. For SpaceX, include launch and Starlink scaling. For Rocket Lab, include Electron and Neutron milestones. For AST SpaceMobile, include satellite deployment, spectrum or carrier activation and funding. Assign a date, a pass condition and a consequence if each milestone slips.
- Stress-test capital needs. Review cash burn, capital expenditures, debt, equity issuance risk and the cost of delays. A company can have a large contract pipeline and still need substantial financing before it can deliver.
- Set a position rule. Decide the maximum loss you can accept, how the position relates to your diversified core holdings and what evidence would make you reduce or exit. Do this before a price spike or launch success changes your judgment.
- Monitor evidence, not social-media excitement. Use filed results, official mission updates and customer or regulatory disclosures. Revisit the thesis when revenue quality, backlog conversion, launch performance, financing or commercial activation changes.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing launch counts as if the businesses were identical
SpaceX’s launch activity supports a large connectivity platform, Rocket Lab’s launch activity sits beside space-systems revenue, and AST SpaceMobile’s key objective is constellation deployment for cellular service. A launch-count league table ignores the economics that each company is trying to build.
Treating backlog or awards as guaranteed profit
Backlog and contracted awards can be delayed, renegotiated, cancelled or expensive to deliver. Check revenue-recognition timing, gross margin, customer obligations, payment schedules and remaining capital requirements.
Ignoring valuation because the technology is impressive
Technological leadership can coexist with an overpriced security. Build a base, upside and downside case using the current price or offering terms, realistic growth, dilution and cash needs. If the downside case would force a sale at the worst possible time, the position is too large.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssuming a partner removes execution risk
A carrier agreement does not complete a satellite network; a government program does not eliminate launch or manufacturing risk; and a launch customer does not guarantee vehicle profitability. Partners can improve demand visibility while leaving delivery obligations with the company.
Buying before checking access and liquidity
For any security, confirm that you can buy, hold and sell it under your jurisdiction and account type. Private or restricted interests can have different reporting, pricing and exit conditions from listed shares.
How to monitor the thesis after purchase
| Company | Operating indicators | Risk indicators | Questions for each update |
|---|---|---|---|
| SpaceX | Starlink Mobile device growth, satellite and capacity expansion, launch cadence and booster reuse, service mix | Valuation changes, access or liquidity changes, launch setbacks, rising capital requirements | Is connectivity scaling efficiently, and are launch and network investments supporting sustainable economics? |
| Rocket Lab | Quarterly revenue, backlog conversion, Electron cadence, space-systems deliveries, government and HASTE work | Cash burn, margin pressure, mission failures, Neutron delays or cost increases | Is backlog converting into profitable revenue while Neutron remains adequately funded? |
| AST SpaceMobile | Satellites in orbit, launch schedule, spectrum and carrier milestones, service activation, contracted commitments | Financing or dilution, launch delays, regulatory or spectrum setbacks, slower customer ramp | Is the constellation progressing fast enough to support commercial service without an unsustainable funding burden? |
Bottom line
SpaceX is the broad platform bet, combining launch and a large, expanding connectivity network; Rocket Lab is the most measurable operating-growth case, with disclosed revenue and backlog across launch and space systems; AST SpaceMobile is the concentrated direct-to-device opportunity, with the highest number of linked execution and financing conditions. None is automatically safer or better.
Choose only after verifying current access and valuation, matching the company to the exposure you want, and sizing the position so a launch delay, financing event or commercialization setback does not destabilize your broader portfolio.
