Neither fund type is a universal winner. An S&P 500 index fund concentrates on large U.S. companies, while a total-market fund owns large-, mid- and small-cap U.S. stocks. For a long-term investor, the better choice depends on the benchmark you want, the fund’s actual costs and access in your account, and how the holding fits with international stocks and bonds elsewhere in your portfolio.
Both are equity funds, so both can lose substantial value in a market decline. Compare the specific funds—not just their labels—and verify current prospectuses, fees and plan availability before investing.

What you are actually buying
An index is a measurement benchmark, not a security you can purchase directly. As the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains, “You cannot invest directly in a market index, but because index funds track a market index they provide an indirect investment option.” You buy a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that attempts to track the index. A fund may hold every constituent or use representative sampling. SEC Investor.gov explains index funds and tracking.

| Decision factor | S&P 500 index fund | Total U.S. stock-market fund |
|---|---|---|
| Typical benchmark | S&P 500, a U.S. large-company equity index | A broad U.S. market index covering large-, mid- and small-cap stocks; SWTSX, for example, tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Total Stock Market Index |

| Role in a portfolio | Core U.S. large-company allocation | One-fund U.S. equity exposure across large, mid and small companies |
The figures in the table are issuer-reported examples, not guarantees of current pricing or performance. Fidelity’s comparison lists FXAIX and FSKAX at 0.015% and Vanguard Admiral share classes VFIAX and VTSAX at 0.040%, with expense information dated February 1, 2026. Charles Schwab lists SWPPX at 0.02% and SWTSX at 0.03%, with comparison data dated June 30, 2026. Check the current prospectus and your account’s transaction-fee schedule before trading.
How the two strategies differ
S&P 500 funds emphasize large U.S. companies
The S&P 500 is a benchmark for large-company U.S. equities. An S&P 500 fund therefore gives you a focused slice of the domestic market. Because the index is market-cap weighted, the largest companies receive the largest positions. That can make the fund’s results especially sensitive to the performance of the biggest stocks.
Total-market funds add mid- and small-cap companies
A total-market fund seeks exposure to the investable U.S. equity market across large-, mid- and small-cap companies. It is not an equal-weighted collection: market-cap weighting means large companies still account for most of the portfolio’s value, while smaller companies add breadth with comparatively modest individual weights. Schwab’s SWTSX profile, for example, reported 2,885 holdings on August 31, 2026 and says the fund tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Total Stock Market Index. See Schwab’s SWTSX profile.

Overlap is high, but the edges are different
The largest companies held by a total-market fund are generally also represented in an S&P 500 fund. The structural distinction is the additional mid- and small-cap exposure, not a promise that one category will outperform. Buying both does not automatically double your diversification: because the large-company holdings overlap, the combination can increase your effective large-cap weighting. Examine the actual holdings and your desired allocation before combining them.
What fees really mean for a long-term investor
The SEC states, “Fees and expenses reduce the value of your investment return.” The expense ratio is only one part of the comparison. Also check transaction fees, bid-ask spreads for ETFs, account-level commissions, short-term trading charges and any plan-specific administrative costs. Read the SEC’s fee and index-fund guidance.
A difference of a few hundredths of a percentage point can compound over decades, but the cheapest label is not automatically the best choice if the fund is unavailable in your workplace plan or imposes a transaction charge. Compare the total cost of using the fund in the account where you will actually hold it.

How to choose between the categories
Choose an S&P 500 fund when its large-company focus fits your plan
- You want a straightforward U.S. large-cap core and accept that it excludes dedicated mid- and small-cap exposure.
- Your workplace retirement plan offers a low-cost S&P 500 option but no reasonably priced total-market option.
- You already hold mid- and small-cap funds elsewhere and do not want to duplicate them.
- The specific S&P 500 fund has lower all-in costs, better trading access or a more suitable share class in your account.
Choose a total-market fund when you want one broad U.S. equity holding
- You want one domestic-stock fund that includes large-, mid- and small-cap companies.
- You prefer not to manage separate large-, mid- and small-cap allocations.
- The fund’s benchmark, holdings, expense ratio and account access meet your requirements.
- You understand that “total market” still has substantial large-company exposure because of market-cap weighting.
Use the rest of your portfolio to settle the question
Neither category supplies international stocks or bonds. A U.S. total-market fund is broader than an S&P 500 fund within the United States, but it is not a global stock fund and it does not provide a bond allocation. Decide separately how much of your portfolio belongs in international equities, high-quality bonds or other assets, then use the U.S. fund that fills the domestic-stock role you still need.
A step-by-step comparison you can perform before buying
- Identify the benchmark. Read the fund page or prospectus to confirm whether it tracks the S&P 500, a total-market index or another index. Broad labels are not proof that two funds follow identical methodologies.
- Check holdings and weighting. Look at the number of positions, the largest holdings and the allocation to mid- and small-cap stocks. For a total-market fund, verify how broadly it actually reaches beyond large companies.
- Record the current expense ratio. Note the date, share class and whether the figure is net or gross of a temporary waiver. Use the prospectus rather than an undated third-party screen.
- Check account eligibility. In a workplace plan, search the investment menu and read the plan’s fee disclosure. In an IRA or taxable brokerage account, check mutual-fund transaction charges, ETF commissions, recurring-investment support and minimums.
- Estimate trading friction. For an ETF, consider the bid-ask spread and whether your order type is appropriate. For a mutual fund, check purchase, redemption or short-term trading fees and the time at which orders receive the day’s price.
- Map the fund against your other holdings. List every U.S. large-, mid- and small-cap fund you already own. Adding a second fund with the same largest holdings may change your concentration more than your diversification.
- Review tax placement. In a taxable account, compare the fund’s distribution history and your expected holding period; in a retirement account, consider the plan’s available share classes and withdrawal rules. Tax outcomes depend on your circumstances, so use the fund’s tax documents and qualified advice where needed.
- Set a maintenance rule. Decide in advance how you will rebalance and what would cause you to replace a fund—such as a persistent cost increase, loss of plan access or a benchmark change. Do not switch solely because one category recently had a better return.
Risks and limitations to understand
Market losses are possible
Both funds own stocks. Their prices can fall sharply during recessions, financial crises or company-specific shocks. A low expense ratio does not reduce the underlying equity risk, and neither index design guarantees a positive return over any particular period.

Tracking will not be exact
Even a fund that follows the right benchmark can lag it because of operating expenses, trading costs, cash balances, sampling and other implementation effects. Compare a fund’s historical tracking difference with its stated objective, but do not treat past tracking as a promise.
Broader does not mean automatically safer or better
Adding mid- and small-cap stocks increases the number of companies represented, but it does not eliminate U.S. market risk. Smaller companies can behave differently from large companies, and their relative performance changes over time. The evidence available for these categories does not establish a permanent forward-return winner.

If you own an S&P 500 fund and a total-market fund in equal dollar amounts, the shared large-company positions can make your overall U.S. equity exposure more large-cap heavy than the labels suggest. Use holdings data or a portfolio-analysis tool to see the combined weights instead of assuming the pair is automatically more diversified.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Mistake: treating the index as the investment. Correction: compare the actual fund’s prospectus, holdings, costs and trading terms.
- Mistake: assuming every “total market” fund is identical. Correction: confirm the index provider, inclusion rules, number of holdings and rebalancing method.
- Mistake: choosing by a stale fee. Correction: record the as-of date and recheck the current prospectus and account screen.
- Mistake: ignoring account access. Correction: include plan fees, mutual-fund transaction charges, ETF spreads and share-class minimums in the comparison.
- Mistake: using recent returns as a forecast. Correction: choose the exposure and risk you can maintain through different market cycles.
- Mistake: calling a U.S. fund diversified enough for every goal. Correction: decide separately whether your portfolio needs international stocks, bonds or other assets.

Do not infer that the lower-cost fund is accessible to you or that two funds with the same expense ratio have identical tax, trading or benchmark characteristics.
What “right for the long term” should mean
A suitable long-term fund is one you can hold through market declines, contribute to consistently and monitor without unnecessary trading. Start with the exposure you intend to own: large U.S. companies only, or the full U.S. market including mid- and small-cap stocks. Then select the implementation with the best combination of current cost, benchmark fit, holdings, account access and trading convenience.
