Southwest status match at a glance
The promotion is a temporary status match followed by a qualification challenge. Your existing elite tier on another U.S.-based airline determines whether Southwest offers A-List or A-List Preferred. The matched benefits are not automatically permanent: they last 120 days from the date Southwest awards them.

Who is eligible for the match?
Eligibility has two parts: the airline you currently hold status with and the exact tier you hold. Southwest requires elite status with another U.S.-based airline, and that status must correspond to a level listed in Southwest’s current status-match chart. Merely having a frequent-flyer account, a paid membership, a credit-card benefit, or a temporary non-elite offer is not enough unless Southwest’s chart and terms identify it as an eligible tier.
Checking a Delta, United, or American tier
Travelers often ask whether Delta, United, or American status can be matched. Those airlines are U.S.-based, but approval still depends on the specific tier and the current Southwest chart. A qualifying tier at one airline may map to A-List while a higher tier may map to A-List Preferred; the chart, not the airline name alone, controls the result. Do not assume that an airline’s entry-level, lifetime, challenge, or promotional status will qualify without confirmation.
What Southwest must be able to verify
Your proof must show that the status is current and identify the elite level. Southwest’s 2026 Status Match Terms describe acceptable evidence as a membership card or statement from the other airline, subject to Southwest verification. Use a document that clearly displays your name, the airline, the tier, and a valid date or current-status indication. If the document is cropped, expired, or does not identify the tier, Southwest may be unable to approve it.
How to apply, step by step
- Confirm the tier match. Compare your current elite level with Southwest’s live status-match chart. If your airline or tier is not listed, do not submit an application expecting an exception.
- Join Rapid Rewards if necessary. Enrollment is free. Record the exact name and account number you use, because the application and later qualifying activity must be tied to that account.
- Open Southwest’s 2026 Status Match registration form. Complete every required field, including your Rapid Rewards details and information about the other airline’s elite status.
- Upload status proof. Submit the current membership card, account statement, or other document the form accepts. Make sure the file is readable and shows the elite level and your identifying information.
- Submit and save the confirmation. Keep a copy of the form confirmation and the document you uploaded. They are useful if you need to ask about a delayed or rejected application.
- Wait for verification. Southwest says processing can take up to 12 business days. Do not book a Southwest itinerary on the assumption that matched benefits are active until Southwest confirms the match.
- Check your account before travel. Confirm that the promotional tier and its effective dates appear in your Rapid Rewards account. Only then should you rely on the status for a booking, airport benefit, or challenge plan.
Registration must be completed by December 30, 2026. Because the stated processing window is up to 12 business days, an application submitted near the deadline may not be verified before the calendar year ends or before a planned trip. Applying earlier gives you time to correct an unreadable document or a missing field.
How long does the matched status last?
Southwest grants promotional A-List or A-List Preferred benefits for 120 days after verification and award. The 120-day period is the complete window for meeting the extension challenge; it is not a promise that benefits continue for a full calendar year automatically.

When the clock starts
Use the effective date shown in Southwest’s confirmation or your Rapid Rewards account as day one. Do not count from the date you created a Rapid Rewards account, uploaded proof, or booked a ticket. If the account does not show a clear effective date, contact Southwest before making nonrefundable plans that depend on the status.
What happens after 120 days
If you meet the applicable flight or point threshold within the window, Southwest extends the matched tier for 12 additional months under the promotion’s terms. If you do not meet the threshold, the promotional status ends when the 120-day period expires. A later application is also limited by the rule that enrollment in the promotion is not allowed more than once in a 12-month period.

You can qualify for the 12-month extension through qualifying Southwest flight activity or through the stated flight tier-qualifying-point target. The thresholds differ by tier.
| Matched tier | Flight route | One-way flight equivalent | Flight tier-qualifying points | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A-List | 3 Southwest round trips | 6 qualifying one-way flights | 11,500 | Within the 120-day promotional period |
| A-List Preferred | 6 Southwest round trips | 12 qualifying one-way flights | 23,000 | Within the 120-day promotional period |
A-List path
An A-List match can be extended for 12 months by completing three Southwest round trips, which Southwest expresses as six qualifying one-way flights, during the 120-day window. The alternative is earning 11,500 tier-qualifying points from flights during that same period.
A-List Preferred path
An A-List Preferred match can be extended by completing six Southwest round trips, or 12 qualifying one-way flights, within 120 days. The alternative is 23,000 flight tier-qualifying points. This is twice the stated round-trip and point requirement for A-List, so a traveler matched to Preferred should compare the cost and feasibility of the two paths before booking.
Rank #3
Choosing segments or points
The segment route rewards travelers who can schedule several qualifying one-way flights, including itineraries that naturally involve a connection or separate trips. The point route may suit someone taking fewer but more expensive qualifying flights. Southwest does not state a single dollar-spend requirement for either challenge in the promotion summary; the relevant measure is qualifying one-way flights or flight tier-qualifying points. Calculate both paths using the fares and schedules you can actually buy inside the 120-day window.
What counts toward the challenge?
The challenge is based on qualifying Southwest flight activity. Before booking, verify that the fare, passenger, itinerary, and booking channel produce activity that Southwest credits toward A-List or A-List Preferred qualification.
Activities Southwest says do not count
- Enrollment points
- Reward flights
- Travel taken with a Companion Pass
- Most partner points, except for the specific eligible-card exception described in Southwest’s Rapid Rewards terms
- Unspecified bonus points
- Nonrevenue travel
- Stops at intermediate cities on connecting or through flights
- Charter flights
The exclusion for intermediate stops is important: a connecting or through itinerary is not automatically two qualifying segments merely because the aircraft stops in another city. Southwest’s terms also distinguish qualifying flight activity from points that are not earned through eligible flight transactions. Read the fare and Rapid Rewards earning details before assuming an itinerary will satisfy a segment or point target.
Do award tickets count?
No. Southwest’s Rapid Rewards terms list reward flights among the activities that do not count toward A-List or A-List Preferred qualification. Buying a ticket with points can therefore provide travel but not the qualifying activity needed for this status-match challenge.
Does Companion Pass travel count?
No. Travel taken under a Companion Pass is specifically excluded. If you are planning a trip with a companion, make sure you distinguish the member’s qualifying ticket from any companion travel before counting flights toward the challenge.
Rank #4
Do partner points count?
Most partner points do not count, although Southwest’s terms describe a specific eligible-card exception. Because the exception is narrow and depends on the applicable Rapid Rewards terms, do not treat ordinary partner activity or a generic bonus as challenge credit unless the terms expressly classify it as eligible.
Planning a realistic 120-day challenge
Start with the calendar
Write down the status effective date and the date 120 days later. Then list every Southwest trip you expect to take in that interval. A trip booked before the match is confirmed may still be useful, but you should not assume promotional benefits or challenge credit until the status is active and the fare is eligible.
Build a qualifying-activity ledger
For each itinerary, record the travel date, confirmation number, fare type, origin and destination, whether the ticket is revenue or an award, and the number of qualifying one-way flights or flight tier-qualifying points posted. Keep boarding passes and receipts until the activity appears in Rapid Rewards. This makes it easier to identify a missing credit before the 120-day window closes.
Allow time for posting and corrections
Do not schedule the final required flight on the last possible day if you can avoid it. Southwest’s promotion gives you a 120-day qualification period, but flight credit may not appear immediately. Leaving time for a missing-credit request protects you from discovering after the deadline that an itinerary was excluded or posted incorrectly.
Compare the two qualification routes
For A-List, compare the cost of six eligible one-way flights with the cost and expected earning of flights that could produce 11,500 flight tier-qualifying points. For A-List Preferred, make the same comparison between 12 eligible one-way flights and 23,000 points. Include change fees, fare differences, lodging, and the value of the status benefits you will actually use; a low-cost extra trip is not a bargain if it is unnecessary or does not qualify.

Common application and challenge problems
“My application is still pending.”
Southwest allows up to 12 business days for processing. Check that your submission was complete and that the uploaded document clearly showed the current tier. If the stated processing period has passed, contact Southwest with your Rapid Rewards number and confirmation rather than submitting a second application, since enrollment more than once in 12 months is not allowed.
“The document was rejected.”
Use a current card or statement that displays your full name, airline, elite level, and current-status information. Avoid screenshots that hide the tier or account holder. Submit the replacement through the channel Southwest directs, and keep the original file and any rejection message.
“A flight is missing from my progress.”
First check whether the ticket was an award, Companion Pass, nonrevenue, charter, or otherwise excluded transaction. Then verify that the Rapid Rewards number on the reservation was correct and that the itinerary was not being counted as multiple segments merely because it had an intermediate stop. If the activity is otherwise eligible, retain proof of travel and request a review through Southwest’s normal Rapid Rewards support process.

“I booked before the match was confirmed.”
A booking date does not by itself activate promotional benefits. Wait for the confirmation and account display of the matched tier before relying on A-List or A-List Preferred privileges. The ticket may still earn challenge credit if it meets the applicable qualification rules, but confirm the fare and posting requirements rather than assuming it will.
“I cannot finish the challenge before the deadline.”
The extension requires the relevant threshold inside the 120-day window. A trip outside that period generally cannot be moved into the window simply because it was purchased earlier. Recalculate your remaining eligible flights and points, and do not count excluded activity to close a shortfall.
What changes if the challenge runs into 2027?
Southwest’s 2026 registration period ends December 30, 2026, but a 120-day promotional period can extend into 2027 for someone who registers and is verified late in 2026. Southwest’s 2027 FAQ says that when a promotional challenge extends into 2027, the status, benefits, and qualification requirements are governed by the Rapid Rewards terms in effect when the benefits are provided or the status is awarded or extended.
Southwest also says that A-List Preferred transitions to Gold on January 1, 2027. Its tier guide describes Silver as replacing A-List, Gold as replacing A-List Preferred, and Platinum as the top tier. These are tier-name and program-structure changes, so a late-2026 applicant should save the original confirmation and read the 2027 terms that apply when the extension is processed. Do not assume that a 2026 label, benefit description, or threshold will be administered identically after the year changes.
Questions to answer before you submit
- Is your current elite level listed in Southwest’s matching chart for a U.S.-based airline?
- Can your proof document clearly show the airline, your name, the current tier, and validity?
- Will Southwest have enough time to process the application before your first trip?
- Which 120-day date range will contain your qualifying flights?
- Are your planned tickets revenue flights rather than award, Companion Pass, nonrevenue, charter, or other excluded activity?
- Will you pursue the segment requirement or the flight tier-qualifying-point requirement?
- If the window crosses January 1, 2027, have you reviewed the 2027 terms and tier-name transition?
Bottom line
Southwest’s 2026 status match is useful for an eligible U.S.-airline elite who expects to fly Southwest soon, but it is a timed challenge rather than a free year of status. Apply with verifiable proof, wait for confirmation, use the 120-day window deliberately, and count only eligible activity. A-List requires three round trips or 11,500 flight tier-qualifying points; A-List Preferred requires six round trips or 23,000 points. Registration closes December 30, 2026, and any challenge crossing into 2027 must be read under the terms then in effect.
