Southwest Plus Card: What to Know Before Flying Under Assigned Seating

Short answer: The Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Card can be a reasonable $99-a-year choice for people who regularly fly Southwest, check bags, and can use the anniversary points and Companion Pass qualifying-point boost. Its value is less obvious for travelers who rarely check luggage, need to choose a specific seat when booking, or spend little in the card’s bonus categories.

The decision changed with Southwest’s assigned-seating rollout and new fare products. The card still advertises a welcome bonus, Southwest bonus earning, anniversary points and a checked-bag benefit, but the seat benefit is narrower than advance seat selection: Plus cardholders can select a Standard seat only within 48 hours of departure and only when one is available. Read the current terms for your itinerary before applying.

Southwest Plus Card terms at a glance

Southwest’s consumer card page, accessed October 13, 2026, lists the following terms. Introductory offers and benefit wording can change, so treat these as the currently advertised terms rather than a permanent promise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Feature Currently advertised term What to check
Annual fee $99 Confirm the fee shown in the application before submitting it.
Introductory offer 50,000 Rapid Rewards points after $1,000 in purchases during the first three months Check the exact account-opening deadline, eligible purchases, exclusions and whether you have received a similar offer before.
Anniversary award 3,000 Rapid Rewards points each anniversary year Confirm when the points post and whether the account must remain open and in good standing.
Southwest purchases 2 points per dollar Merchant coding and eligible-purchase definitions apply.
Gas stations and grocery stores 2 points per dollar on the first $5,000 in combined purchases per anniversary year The cap is combined across both categories and resets by anniversary year, not necessarily January 1.
Other purchases 1 point per dollar Some transactions may be excluded from points under the card agreement.
Companion Pass boost 10,000 Companion Pass qualifying points each year Qualifying points are separate from redeemable Rapid Rewards points.
Checked bag First checked bag free for the cardmember and up to eight additional passengers on the same reservation, subject to applicable terms Check the fare, ticketing date, reservation structure and current baggage rules.
Seat benefit Complimentary Standard seat selection within 48 hours before departure when available This is not guaranteed advance seat selection at booking.
Boarding Group 5 boarding, subject to an earlier position from seat, fare or tier status Your boarding position can still depend on other parts of the reservation.

What changed with the “new Southwest”

Southwest announced Choice, Choice Preferred and Choice Extra fares, along with new credit-card and tier-member benefits, on April 28, 2025. The company said checked-bag changes began May 28, 2025, while seating and related boarding changes would arrive with assigned seating. That means a cardholder should evaluate the Plus Card against the fare actually being purchased, not against assumptions formed under Southwest’s earlier open-seating model.

Assigned-seat travel is bookable for travel on or after January 27, 2026, according to Southwest’s customer-enhancements information. For Plus cardholders, the published seat benefit is a Standard seat within 48 hours of departure when available. It does not say that every cardholder can choose any Standard seat at the time of purchase, nor does it guarantee that adjacent seats will remain for a group.

Southwest executive vice president Tony Roach described the April 28, 2025 changes this way: “With new choices like seat selection and Extra Legroom, our enhanced fare bundles let Customers customize their trip while still enjoying our industry-leading reliability and hospitality.” That is a company characterization of the new fare structure, not an independent measurement of the card’s value.

How the Plus Card earns points

Southwest spending

Southwest purchases earn 2 points per dollar under the current listing. If you buy several Southwest tickets, pay for onboard or travel-related items that qualify under the agreement, or manage recurring Southwest spending, this category is straightforward to track. The card’s terms, rather than the name of a transaction, determine whether a charge earns the bonus rate.

Gas stations and grocery stores

The card earns 2 points per dollar on the first $5,000 in combined gas-station and grocery-store purchases during each anniversary year. “Combined” matters: spending in both categories draws down the same cap. Once the cap is reached, further purchases do not receive that particular 2-point rate; the applicable base rate and terms then control. Because the period is an anniversary year, map the reset date to the date your account opened rather than assuming a calendar-year reset.

All other purchases

Other purchases earn 1 point per dollar. This makes the Plus Card’s everyday return highly dependent on how much of your budget falls into Southwest, gas and grocery categories. A traveler who puts most expenses outside those categories should not assume the card’s welcome bonus or Southwest affiliation will compensate indefinitely for a low ongoing earning rate.

Anniversary points versus the welcome offer

The 3,000 anniversary points are recurring under the advertised benefit, while the 50,000-point introductory offer is a one-time, time-sensitive promotion with a three-month spending requirement. Separate the two when estimating first-year and later-year value. Confirm that purchases qualify for the introductory threshold and do not count excluded transactions or returned purchases toward it.

What the 10,000-point Companion Pass boost actually does

The cardmember benefits page lists a 10,000-point annual Companion Pass qualifying-point boost. These are qualifying points used in the Companion Pass qualification system; they are not the same as redeemable Rapid Rewards points and are not a statement credit or cash-equivalent rebate.

For someone already close to a Companion Pass threshold through Southwest flying and other eligible activity, the boost can reduce the remaining qualifying-point gap. For someone who is nowhere near qualification, the points may have little practical effect in that year. Do not count the 10,000 points as 10,000 points available to redeem for an award ticket.

Does the Southwest Plus Card get you a free checked bag?

The current cardmember-benefits page describes a first-checked-bag benefit for the cardmember and up to eight additional passengers on the same reservation, subject to applicable terms. Southwest’s policy announcement tied the baggage changes to flights booked on or after May 28, 2025. Those details make the reservation itself important: a companion on a separate confirmation, a split booking, or a ticket that falls outside the applicable fare and date rules may not receive the same treatment.

Before relying on the benefit, verify all of the following in the live baggage terms and your reservation:

  • The Plus cardmember is identified as required by the benefit rules.
  • The other travelers are on the same reservation and within the stated passenger limit.
  • The flight was booked on or after the applicable policy date if that condition applies.
  • The fare, route, ticket status and any exceptions do not remove the free-bag allowance.
  • The reservation is not being changed in a way that separates travelers or alters eligibility.

The benefit can be valuable for families or groups that routinely check bags, but its value depends on how often those eligible bags would otherwise incur a charge. If you normally travel with only a personal item or carry-on, the baggage feature may contribute little to your decision.

When can Plus cardholders choose a seat?

For travel under Southwest’s assigned-seating system, Plus cardholders may select a complimentary Standard seat within 48 hours before departure when one is available. The 48-hour window is the key limitation. The benefit is not the same as selecting a Standard seat during the original booking process, and it does not promise a particular row, window, aisle or group of adjacent seats.

What “when available” means for planning

Seat inventory can change as other passengers select seats, reservations are modified and operational needs are handled. A family that must sit together, a traveler who needs a specific location, or anyone unwilling to accept a remaining middle seat should not treat this benefit as a guarantee. Check the reservation as soon as the window opens, but keep a backup plan if the desired seats are gone.

Extra Legroom and other fare choices

The Plus Card benefit described here is for a Standard seat. It does not establish complimentary access to Extra Legroom or every seat type offered through Southwest’s fare bundles. If a particular seat is essential, compare the cost of buying the needed fare or seat option with the value of the card’s other benefits rather than assuming the card will upgrade the seat automatically.

Boarding position under the Plus Card

The cardmember benefits page lists Group 5 boarding, while noting that an earlier position may result from your seat, fare or tier status. Group 5 is therefore a baseline card benefit, not a promise that every trip will board in exactly that group. Review the boarding position displayed for the specific reservation, especially after a fare change, seat selection or status update.

Is the Plus Card worth it with assigned seating?

Use a year-specific calculation rather than a general airline-card rule. Start with the $99 annual fee, then estimate only benefits you can plausibly use under their conditions.

  1. Count realistic checked-bag use. List the Southwest trips on which you and eligible companions would check bags. Include only reservations that satisfy the card’s passenger and booking requirements.
  2. Assess your seat requirement. If a Standard seat chosen within 48 hours is acceptable, the seat benefit may help. If you need advance selection or a particular seat type, assign it little or no value.
  3. Value the anniversary points conservatively. The 3,000 points recur under the advertised term, but their usefulness depends on your Southwest travel and redemption plans.
  4. Separate Companion Pass qualification from award travel. Decide whether the 10,000 qualifying-point boost helps you reach or retain a Companion Pass. Do not add it to your redeemable-points balance.
  5. Project ongoing earning. Estimate Southwest purchases plus gas and grocery spending that falls within the $5,000 combined anniversary-year cap. Apply 1 point per dollar to the remaining spending categories.
  6. Review the welcome offer independently. A one-time 50,000-point offer can affect the first year, but it should not justify a recurring annual fee if the long-term benefits do not fit your travel pattern.

If the recurring value of eligible bag savings, anniversary points and useful earning exceeds the annual fee by a margin you consider worthwhile, the card may fit. If your main requirement is guaranteed seat selection at booking, the Plus Card’s published seat benefit does not solve that problem by itself.

Who is most likely to benefit

Frequent Southwest flyers who check bags

The strongest fit is a cardmember who books Southwest often, checks at least one bag on eligible trips and can place enough Southwest, gas and grocery spending on the card to use the bonus categories. A group traveling under one reservation may also benefit from the stated coverage for up to eight additional passengers, provided the live terms are met.

Travelers pursuing Companion Pass qualification

The annual qualifying-point boost is more relevant to a traveler who is already earning Companion Pass qualifying points through eligible activity. It is less compelling if you are not pursuing that status or cannot realistically approach the qualification requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

People comfortable choosing late

A traveler who accepts whatever Standard seat remains within 48 hours may find the seat benefit useful. Someone who needs a specific seat at booking should look at the fare and seat rules first and treat the card as a possible supplement, not a substitute for advance control.

Who should be cautious

  • Rare Southwest flyers: You may not generate enough bag, anniversary or Southwest-purchase value to offset $99 every year.
  • Carry-on-only travelers: The first-bag benefit has little value if you rarely check luggage.
  • Seat-sensitive families: The 48-hour, availability-based Standard-seat benefit does not assure adjacent seats.
  • General-spending users: Purchases outside Southwest, gas and grocery categories earn 1 point per dollar under the advertised structure.
  • People focused only on the welcome bonus: The introductory offer is time-sensitive and should not be treated as a permanent return.

Application and first-year checklist

  1. Read the live Southwest consumer card page and the application disclosures, including the annual fee and current introductory offer.
  2. Confirm the spending deadline for the 50,000-point offer and identify which purchases will count.
  3. Record your account anniversary date so you can track the $5,000 combined gas-and-grocery cap and the anniversary points.
  4. Link the cardmember identity correctly to Southwest reservations if the current terms require it for benefits.
  5. Keep eligible companions on the same reservation when you are relying on the up-to-eight-passenger bag benefit.
  6. For assigned-seat travel, check the reservation during the 48-hour window and select a Standard seat promptly if one is available.
  7. Recheck baggage, seat and boarding terms after a rebooking, fare change or split reservation.

Common mistakes that reduce the card’s value

Confusing redeemable and qualifying points

Rapid Rewards points used for awards and Companion Pass qualifying points serve different purposes. Counting the 10,000-point boost as spendable travel currency overstates the card’s value.

Assuming the bag benefit covers separate reservations

The published wording refers to the cardmember and up to eight additional passengers on the same reservation. Separate confirmations may not receive the same treatment.

Waiting beyond the seat window

The complimentary Standard-seat benefit is tied to the 48 hours before departure and availability. Waiting until the last moment can leave fewer choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating the $5,000 cap as a calendar-year allowance

The listed gas-station and grocery cap applies per anniversary year. Track the account-specific reset date and the combined total.

Assuming Group 5 is always the final boarding position

Seat, fare and tier status can produce an earlier position. Look at the boarding information on each reservation instead of relying solely on the card’s baseline description.

Bottom line: a fit decision, not an automatic upgrade

The Southwest Plus Card is easiest to justify when you repeatedly fly Southwest, check bags under eligible reservations, can use the 2-point earning categories and have a realistic use for the anniversary points or Companion Pass qualifying-point boost. The assigned-seating era makes the limitation clearer: Plus cardholders receive a Standard-seat opportunity within 48 hours when available, not guaranteed advance seat selection. Price the card against your own itineraries and current Southwest terms, then decide whether those recurring benefits—not just the temporary welcome offer—outweigh the $99 annual fee.
