Alaska’s former MVP program is now Atmos Rewards; Atmos is the stronger choice when Alaska, Hawaiian, oneworld or international partner flights matter because its status carries alliance recognition and partner benefits. United Premier makes the most sense for travelers who are anchored to United hubs and Star Alliance, but United’s normal annual qualification table should be confirmed before you commit to a status strategy.
The right comparison is not “which airline has the fanciest status?” It is which program rewards the routes, fares and connections you actually buy. The qualification currencies, excluded fares, alliance reach and day-of-travel benefits differ substantially.

At a glance: the best program for each kind of traveler
| Program | 2026 qualification information | Most useful differentiator | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Southwest A-List | 20 qualifying one-way flights or 35,000 Tier Qualifying Points in a calendar year | Simple domestic bundle: Group 1 boarding, one free checked bag, standby and seat benefits | Frequent Southwest flyers who rarely need alliance partners |
| Atmos Rewards (formerly Alaska MVP) | Silver 20,000; Gold 40,000; Platinum 80,000; Titanium 135,000 status points in 2026 | oneworld recognition plus earning and redemption across Alaska, Hawaiian and global partners | Travelers using Alaska/Hawaiian markets, oneworld or international itineraries |
| United Premier | A 2026 Silver challenge requires two United or United Express segments plus either 1,600 PQP and 5 PQF, or 1,800 PQP | United and Star Alliance network access | Travelers whose schedules are centered on United hubs and Star Alliance |
These are not equivalent ladders. Southwest presents one A-List tier with a flight-count or points route. Atmos has four published status levels. United’s challenge terms are temporary qualification rules, not a substitute for the standard annual Premier table.

Southwest A-List: what you earn and what counts
Qualification threshold
Southwest’s 2026–2027 A-List information requires either 20 qualifying one-way flights or 35,000 Tier Qualifying Points (TQP) during a calendar year. A one-way flight is the qualifying unit, so a round trip can normally provide two qualifying flights when both directions meet the rules.
#1 Best Overall
The two paths suit different travel patterns. The flight path favors someone taking many shorter trips, while the TQP path favors fewer trips with higher eligible spend. Before choosing a target, total only the activity Southwest defines as qualifying; the number of flights on your itinerary is not automatically the number credited toward A-List.
Flights and points that are excluded
Southwest’s A-List FAQ excludes several common sources of activity:
- Reward flights.
- Travel covered by a Companion Pass.
- Most partner points and bonus points.
- Nonrevenue travel.
- Charter flights.
- Certain tickets purchased through online travel agencies.
- Intermediate stops that Southwest counts as separate segments under its qualification rules, rather than treating an itinerary as one simple qualifying flight.
Eligible Southwest co-branded cards can earn TQP, but posting timing and the program terms control when those points count. Card earning therefore can accelerate progress, but it does not make every card purchase or bonus a qualifying flight.

A-List’s practical benefits
| Benefit | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Group 1 boarding | You receive Southwest’s highest listed A-List boarding group treatment, subject to the airline’s operating rules. |
| One free checked bag | One checked bag is included on eligible travel; verify the ticket and current baggage terms for exceptions. |
| 25% earning bonus | Southwest lists a 25% bonus on eligible earning. |
| Same-day standby | You can use Southwest’s same-day standby option under its fare and flight rules. |
| Priority and express lanes | Priority security or airport-service lanes are available where Southwest offers them. |
| Priority phone support | A-List members receive a priority telephone-support channel. |
| Seat access | Preferred or standard seat selection is available when offered and available; Southwest also lists access to extra-legroom upgrades within 48 hours. |
The value is concentrated on the day of departure. A free bag can matter more than a small mileage bonus if you routinely check luggage, while same-day standby is useful when your schedule changes. The bundle is easy to understand because it is tied to Southwest-operated travel rather than a large alliance rulebook.
Who should pursue A-List?
A-List is compelling when Southwest operates most of your paid trips, your home airports have strong Southwest service, and you can use the boarding, bag, standby and seat benefits repeatedly. It is less attractive if your normal itinerary requires international partners, long-haul alliance connections or upgrades on another carrier. A-List does not create oneworld or Star Alliance priority; its advantages are primarily on Southwest’s own network.

Atmos Rewards: the current Alaska MVP equivalent
The name and 2026 status levels
Alaska’s Mileage Plan/MVP branding has been replaced by Atmos Rewards. In Alaska’s 2026 announcement, the status-point thresholds are:
| Atmos level | 2026 status-point requirement | oneworld equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Atmos Silver | 20,000 status points | Ruby |
| Atmos Gold | 40,000 status points | Sapphire |
| Atmos Platinum | 80,000 status points | Emerald |
| Atmos Titanium | 135,000 status points | Emerald |
The oneworld mapping is the key reason an Alaska MVP comparison is no longer just an Alaska-versus-Alaska question. Silver’s Ruby recognition is the entry level; Gold’s Sapphire and Platinum or Titanium’s Emerald recognition can affect priority treatment on eligible oneworld journeys. The exact benefit still depends on the operating airline, ticket and airport.

Atmos members can earn and redeem across Alaska, Hawaiian, oneworld and other global partners. That gives the program a broader use case than a single-carrier domestic bundle: a traveler can pursue status on Alaska or Hawaiian and use the resulting recognition across eligible partner flights.
Alaska also describes American Airlines benefits for eligible Atmos tiers, including complimentary Main Cabin Extra access and complimentary upgrades on qualifying North American routes. Those benefits are subject to availability, the operating carrier’s rules and fare eligibility. They should be viewed as opportunities rather than guaranteed upgrades on every American flight.
The 2026 Saver-fare rule
A major fare restriction takes effect for the dates specified by Alaska: Saver fares booked on or after June 11, 2026, and flown on or after August 1, 2026, earn no Atmos points or status points. If your travel is built around the lowest Saver fare, those tickets will not move you toward Silver, Gold, Platinum or Titanium under that rule. Check the booking date and travel date together; changing only one of them can change the result.
Rank #3
Who should pursue Atmos?
Atmos is the strongest candidate for travelers based in Alaska or Hawaiian markets, people who regularly connect through those airlines, and flyers who can use oneworld or international partners. It is also the better fit when partner upgrades, alliance priority and cross-carrier earning matter more than a simple domestic boarding package. The trade-off is complexity: status points, partner fare rules and Saver restrictions require more tracking than Southwest’s two-path A-List test.

United Premier: what is established and what remains to verify
The available 2026 Premier Silver challenge
United’s accessible 2026 challenge terms provide a specific route to Premier Silver. You must complete at least two United or United Express segments and then meet one of these requirements:
- 1,600 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) plus 5 Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF); or
- 1,800 PQP.
United also says MileagePlus cardmembers can earn additional PQP in status-match challenges. That can change the amount of flying needed for a particular challenge, so cardholders should read the challenge offer attached to their account rather than assume every member has the same target.
Do not treat the challenge as the normal annual ladder
The complete standard annual Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum and 1K thresholds were not available in the accessible 2026 Premier page used for this comparison. Because of that, a precise annual United-versus-Atmos threshold table would be misleading. Confirm United’s current Premier terms immediately before planning a full-year qualification strategy. The challenge figures above describe the temporary 2026 offer, not a permanent annual requirement.
Who should pursue United Premier?
United Premier is most rational when United’s hub network determines your trips and Star Alliance provides the international connections you need. The value can come from schedule breadth and alliance access rather than a single headline perk. Compare the status against your actual United fare mix, hub airports, upgrade expectations and international destinations; a challenge that looks easy on paper may be poor value if most of your travel is on another carrier.

Qualification mechanics compared
| Question | Southwest A-List | Atmos Rewards | United Premier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary qualification currency | Qualifying one-way flights or TQP | Status points | PQP and, in some pathways, PQF |
| Published 2026 figures in the available material | 20 flights or 35,000 TQP | 20,000–135,000, depending on tier | Challenge: 1,600 PQP + 5 PQF, or 1,800 PQP, plus two United segments |
| Does card activity help? | Eligible Southwest cards earn TQP under program terms | Not established in the available program details | United says MileagePlus cardmembers can earn additional PQP in status-match challenges |
| Major fare warning | Reward, Companion Pass, most bonus or partner points, nonrevenue, charter and certain OTA tickets do not qualify | Specified Saver fares booked from June 11, 2026 and flown from August 1, 2026 earn no points or status points | Challenge and normal annual rules are separate; verify the current offer |
Use the currency that matches your behavior. A segment-count target can reward frequent short trips, while a points target rewards eligible spend. A card that earns status credit can reduce required flying, but only if the credit posts under the current terms and you would use the card anyway.
Day-of-travel value: boarding, bags, seats and changes
When Southwest is the practical winner
Southwest’s A-List package is unusually visible at the airport. Group 1 boarding, one free checked bag, same-day standby and priority lanes can reduce both friction and out-of-pocket costs on ordinary domestic trips. The extra-legroom access window—within 48 hours—may help, but availability matters and it is not the same as a guaranteed premium seat on every flight.
When Atmos is more valuable than a domestic bundle
Atmos’s value appears when the itinerary leaves Alaska’s own aircraft. oneworld Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald recognition can provide alliance-level priority, while eligible American benefits can improve seat access or upgrade prospects on qualifying North American routes. Those benefits depend on the operating carrier, fare and availability, so they are most useful to travelers who can choose flights where the rules apply.
What United requires you to evaluate
United’s strongest case is network fit. The available material establishes the Premier Silver challenge, but it does not establish a complete current annual benefit table here. Evaluate United based on the routes you can realistically fly, the Star Alliance connections you need and the Premier terms shown in your current account or United’s current program documentation.
Alliance reach and upgrade strategy
| Need | Most natural choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly domestic Southwest trips with simple airport benefits | Southwest A-List | The benefits are designed around Southwest boarding, baggage, standby and seat access. |
| Alaska or Hawaiian flying plus oneworld connections | Atmos Rewards | Status maps to oneworld Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald and can be used across eligible partners. |
| United hubs and Star Alliance itineraries | United Premier | United’s network and alliance connectivity are the central advantages, subject to current Premier terms. |
Do not choose a program solely for a theoretical upgrade. First identify which airline operates your most important routes, then check whether your fare earns status credit and whether the upgrade benefit applies to that operating carrier. Atmos’s American benefits, for example, are conditional rather than universal; Southwest A-List’s core value stays on Southwest; and United’s temporary challenge should not be mistaken for permanent annual status.

Status matches, challenges and credit-card acceleration
Promotional status matches and challenges can be useful when you already hold status elsewhere, but they are volatile. The United Silver challenge described above is a 2026 offer with its own segment and PQP/PQF requirements. Southwest and Alaska may also change match, challenge or card rules, so use only the terms displayed at the time you apply.
Co-branded cards can be part of a qualification plan. The relevant families include Southwest Rapid Rewards cards, the Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite and United MileagePlus cards. Before applying, verify the issuing bank, country availability, annual fee, welcome offer, posting schedule and exactly how purchases translate into TQP, status points or PQP. Never value a status card by its bonus alone: the useful question is whether you will retain the card and naturally spend enough to earn credit before the qualification deadline.
A decision process that avoids the usual mistakes
- List your real flight pattern. Tally the carrier you used over the past year, your home airports, typical connections, international destinations and the proportion of trips that are paid, award or partner tickets.
- Remove ineligible activity. For Southwest, exclude reward, Companion Pass, nonrevenue, charter, certain OTA and most bonus or partner-point activity. For Atmos, flag Saver fares that fall under the 2026 no-earning dates. For United, separate a challenge from normal annual qualification.
- Choose the network before the perk. Select Southwest if its schedule solves your trips; Atmos if Alaska, Hawaiian, oneworld or global partners do; United if United and Star Alliance dominate.
- Estimate attainable credit. Compare your expected qualifying one-way flights and TQP with A-List, your expected status points with the Atmos tier you would actually use, and your United PQP/PQF activity with the current Premier terms.
- Price the benefits you will use. Include checked-bag savings, standby flexibility, seat access, airport priority, partner recognition and realistic upgrade opportunities. Ignore benefits that apply only to routes you rarely take.
- Recheck rules before booking a concentrated year. Fare exclusions, card posting rules, challenge windows and alliance benefits can change. A status plan built on an old web page can miss the qualification target even when your total spending is unchanged.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Counting every itinerary as one Southwest flight
Southwest’s qualifying-flight rules distinguish segments and exclude specific ticket types. Keep a record of qualifying one-way activity after each trip rather than relying on a round-trip count.
Buying an Atmos Saver fare for the status points
For the dates Alaska specifies, that strategy produces no Atmos points or status points. Compare the eligible fare’s price with the value of the credit before purchasing.
Using a United challenge number as an annual forecast
The two-segment and 1,600/1,800-PQP figures are challenge terms. They do not establish the normal annual Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum or 1K thresholds. Check the current annual table when it is available.
Assuming alliance status guarantees an upgrade
Atmos partner benefits and American upgrades depend on availability, fare and operating-carrier rules. Treat alliance recognition as priority access, not a confirmed premium cabin.
Choosing a card before checking geography and posting
Card products, fees, offers and status-credit mechanics vary by market and can change. Confirm the current terms and allow enough time for credits to post before the qualification year closes.

Pick Southwest A-List for a Southwest-centered domestic travel life where boarding, bags, standby and seat access are the benefits you will use most. Pick Atmos Rewards—the current Alaska MVP successor—when Alaska or Hawaiian flying, oneworld recognition and international partner access justify tracking status points and fare rules. Pick United Premier when United hubs and Star Alliance connections shape your schedule, but verify United’s current standard annual qualification table rather than extrapolating from the 2026 Silver challenge.
