There is no universally best South Korea ETF. For most investors, a broad MSCI Korea fund is the logical starting point; an IT-sector fund is appropriate only if you intentionally want more semiconductor and technology exposure; and a dividend-screened fund fits an income-and-stability objective. The choice matters because Korean broad-market indexes are unusually concentrated in two semiconductor companies, while fees, distribution rules, listing access and the Korean won exchange rate can materially change your result.
The three choices at a glance
All three products below are Korea-listed ETFs, so you need a regulated brokerage account that can trade on the Korea Exchange (KRX). Their objectives are different enough that comparing only recent performance or headline yield can lead to the wrong purchase.

| ETF | Ticker | What it tracks or screens | Published cost | Distribution approach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TIGER MSCI Korea TR | 310970 | MSCI Korea Total Return Index; broad Korean equity exposure | 0.12% total fee (KRX listing information) | Total-return benchmark; confirm the fund’s current cash-distribution policy before trading |
| KODEX MSCI Korea TR | 278540 | MSCI Korea index-linked ETP; broad Korean equity exposure | Not stated in the official product information | Total-return benchmark; confirm the fund’s current cash-distribution policy before trading |
| KODEX 200IT TR | 363580 | Information-technology companies in the KOSPI 200 | 0.150% total expense ratio (Samsung Asset Management, 2026) | Total-return sector benchmark; check current product documents for cash distributions |
| TIGER 지속배당 | 266140 | Companies among the 300 largest by market capitalization selected for high dividend yield and stability | 0.29% annual fee (Mirae Asset Global Investments, 2026) | Quarterly distribution reference dates in January, April, July and October |
The fee figures are not perfectly interchangeable: one source calls the charge a total fee, another a total expense ratio, and the dividend fund page calls it an annual fee. Check each fund’s latest prospectus and exchange data for the currently applicable expense measure, bid–ask spread and any other trading costs.
What “broad-market Korea” really means
MSCI Korea exposure is not an equal-weight portfolio
A broad benchmark gives you exposure to large and mid-sized Korean companies, but it does not spread your money evenly across industries or issuers. MSCI’s snapshot dated September 30, 2026 lists Samsung Electronics at 35.31% of the MSCI Korea index, SK hynix at 27.58%, and Samsung Electronics preferred shares at 4.40%. Those three positions alone represent 67.29% of the index on that date.

That concentration is the central fact to understand before buying either TIGER MSCI Korea TR or KODEX MSCI Korea TR. Although the funds are described as broad-market products, their returns can be dominated by semiconductor demand, memory-chip pricing, capital spending and company-specific events at the largest holdings. The weights will move as prices and index reviews change, so treat the September 30, 2026 figures as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent allocation.
TIGER MSCI Korea TR
KRX lists TIGER MSCI Korea TR (310970) as beginning on November 20, 2018, with a 0.12% total fee. “TR” refers to a total-return index: dividends from index constituents are assumed to be reinvested in the benchmark calculation, before fund expenses and trading frictions. The product is the clearest baseline in this comparison when you want one Korean equity holding without making a separate sector or dividend bet.
KODEX MSCI Korea TR
MSCI lists KODEX MSCI Korea TR (278540) as a Korea index-linked exchange-traded product alongside TIGER MSCI Korea TR. It provides the same broad benchmark concept, but the official product information does not state a comparable fee figure. Before choosing between the two broad funds, compare the current expense disclosure, assets, average trading volume, bid–ask spread, tracking difference and how easily your broker fills orders. A lower advertised fee is useful only if the fund also trades efficiently and follows its benchmark closely.

When a technology ETF makes sense
KODEX 200IT TR’s deliberate sector tilt
KODEX 200IT TR (363580) invests in information-technology companies within the KOSPI 200. Samsung Asset Management says the fund launched on September 25, 2020, and reports a 0.150% total expense ratio for 2026. Because the eligible universe is already limited to one sector, this is not a substitute for a broad Korea allocation; it is an intentional overweight.

The practical effect is greater sensitivity to semiconductor and technology cycles. Strong memory pricing, rising global electronics demand or a favorable investment cycle can help the fund relative to a broad index. The reverse is also true: an inventory correction, falling chip prices, export restrictions, delayed capital spending or a valuation reset can hurt a technology-tilted portfolio faster than a diversified Korean equity fund.
Questions to answer before adding an IT tilt
- Is your existing portfolio already heavily exposed to global semiconductors or Korean technology companies?
- Can you tolerate larger drawdowns than a broad-market allocation might experience when the sector cycle turns?
- Are you buying the fund to express a specific view, rather than assuming “technology” automatically means higher long-term returns?
- Will the additional 0.150% expense ratio, trading spread and Korean-won exposure fit your expected holding period?
If you cannot state the reason for the tilt in one sentence, the broad-market option is usually easier to maintain and rebalance.
How the dividend-oriented option differs

Its listed annual fee is 0.29%, higher than the published 0.12% fee for TIGER MSCI Korea TR and the 0.150% total expense ratio for KODEX 200IT TR.

Why a high-dividend screen can behave differently
Dividend selection can shift the portfolio toward mature, cash-generative businesses and away from companies reinvesting heavily for growth. That can provide a different return pattern from a market-cap-weighted index, but it may lag when growth-led sectors dominate. A high recent yield can also reflect a falling share price or a dividend that later changes. Compare the index methodology, stability criteria, fee and distribution policy instead of selecting solely on the latest yield figure.
Costs, trading and total return
Look beyond the published fee
The stated annual charge is deducted from fund assets and therefore reduces returns over time. It is not the only cost. Your realized result can also reflect the bid–ask spread, brokerage commission, exchange fees, currency conversion, taxes applicable to your country and the difference between the fund’s net asset value and its market price. No current spread or tax rate is provided here for any investor jurisdiction, so obtain those figures from your broker and tax adviser.
Total-return indexes versus cash distributions
A total-return index reinvests constituent dividends in its theoretical performance. That does not by itself tell you whether an ETF will pay you cash. For the two MSCI Korea TR products and KODEX 200IT TR, read the current distribution policy and notices. For TIGER 지속배당, use the stated quarterly reference months as a scheduling aid, not as a promise of a fixed amount. When comparing performance, use total return on both sides: include reinvested distributions for a distributing fund and account for all fees.

Confirm that you can trade the Korean listing
- Ask your broker whether your account is permitted to trade KRX-listed ETFs, not merely foreign-listed funds that hold Korean shares.
- Confirm the exact ticker, currency, market hours, order types and settlement convention for the Korean listing.
- Check whether your account can hold and convert Korean won (KRW), or determine how the broker handles the conversion automatically.
- Review commissions, foreign-exchange markups, custody charges and the tax treatment of distributions and capital gains in your country.
- Use a limit order when spreads are wide or liquidity is thin, and verify the executed price rather than assuming it equals the displayed net asset value.
Understand KRW exposure
These ETFs are Korean-listed and their underlying shares are priced in Korea. If your home currency is not KRW, your result combines the Korean equity return with changes in the won exchange rate. A rising won can boost a foreign investor’s translated return; a falling won can offset a gain in the shares. Currency movement can be substantial even when the ETF’s local-currency price is little changed. Decide whether that exposure is intentional before treating a Korean ETF as a pure company or sector call.

A practical selection framework
Choose a broad MSCI Korea fund as the baseline when
- You want one-fund exposure to Korean large- and mid-cap equities.
- You do not have a strong view that technology should be overweight or that dividends should dominate.
- You accept that “broad” still means substantial exposure to Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.
- You can compare the two broad funds on current fee, spread, liquidity and tracking quality.
Consider KODEX 200IT TR when
- You deliberately want an information-technology and semiconductor tilt.
- You can withstand greater sector-cycle volatility and concentration.
- You have checked overlap with your other Korean or global technology holdings.
Consider TIGER 지속배당 when
- Your priority is a dividend-and-stability screen rather than maximum participation in growth-led markets.
- You understand that the 0.29% annual fee may be worthwhile only if the strategy fits your objective.
- You are comfortable with variable distributions and the possibility that dividend-oriented stocks lag the broad market.
Use a split allocation only for a stated reason
Some investors may use a broad fund as a core holding and add a smaller IT or dividend position. That can make the portfolio more expressive, but it also increases the work of monitoring overlap, concentration and rebalancing. Because the broad index already has large semiconductor weights, adding KODEX 200IT TR can create a much larger technology exposure than its label alone suggests. A dividend fund can offset some growth concentration, but it does not remove country or currency risk.
Risks and failure modes to check
Concentration risk
The September 30, 2026 MSCI weights show why a broad Korea ETF can fall with a small number of companies. Review current holdings before every sizable purchase; index weights are date-sensitive.
Country and geopolitical risk
Korean companies face domestic regulation, export dependence, trade-policy changes and geopolitical developments on the Korean Peninsula. A Korea-only ETF does not provide the geographic diversification of a global fund.
Tracking and structure risk
Two funds referencing the same broad index can produce different investor returns because of fees, sampling, rebalancing costs, securities lending, taxes and trading conditions. Compare published tracking difference and net asset value history, not just the index name.

Distribution and timing risk
Buying shortly before an ex-distribution date does not create free return: the fund price generally adjusts when cash leaves the portfolio, and your tax result may differ from the economic return. Confirm dates and local tax rules before trading for income timing.
Issuer and operational checks
Read the latest factsheet for each product’s replication method, liquidity, permitted securities lending, currency handling and termination provisions. Product names and fees can change, so do not rely on an old screenshot or an outdated comparison table.
What the official disclosures warn
Samsung Asset Management states: “Carefully consider the Fund’s investment objectives, risk factors, changes and expenses before investing.” It also says that “The performance quoted represents past performance and does not guarantee future results.”

Those warnings apply directly to this comparison. The published fees and holding weights are useful decision inputs, not forecasts. Recheck them on the date you place an order and record the “as of” date in your own investment notes.
Decision checklist before placing an order
- Write down whether your objective is broad Korean exposure, an IT tilt or dividend-and-stability exposure.
- Record the fund’s current benchmark, fee measure and “as of” date.
- Inspect the largest holdings and sector weights, especially Samsung Electronics and SK hynix in a broad MSCI Korea product.
- Confirm distribution policy and the meaning of any reference date.
- Check live spread, trading volume and your broker’s total cost in KRW and your home currency.
- Decide how much country, semiconductor and currency risk your overall portfolio can absorb.
- Set a rebalancing rule before buying so a successful sector tilt does not silently become your entire Korea allocation.
For a neutral starting point, use a broad MSCI Korea ETF after comparing the two available products on current implementation costs and trading quality. Add KODEX 200IT TR only for a deliberate technology view, and use TIGER 지속배당 when the dividend-and-stability screen—not the most recent yield—is the reason you are investing.
